Green Hit - Purpose CD

Green Hit presents an adventurous, yet rewarding mix of electronic music, world beat, and jazz with the 8 tracks of “Purpose.”

Hulaween 2010

You could feel a sense of enthusiasm in the air the night of the 29th at the Hampton Coliseum aka "The Mothership", there was so much anticipation for a band that hasn’t played the east coast in nearly 3 years

The_Disco_Biscuits__2_First it was time for Philly's favorite The Disco Biscuits who promptly started at 7:30 with "Hope", a slow going but meaningful start that quickly picked up steam with a dirty "Astronaut >Spacebirdmatingcall> Astronaut" sandwich with a highlighted tease of "Suspended in the Air." Following was a danceable "Shimmy in a Conga Line" which seemed to also go unfinished; the set abruptly ended with an epic, heavy tranced "Basis for a D

Americana/Worldbeat ensemble with a revolutionary vibe.

Option-22

Lori McKinney - Vocals, Drums, Spoken Word
Robert Blankenship - Guitar, Banjo, Didgeridoo, etc.
Albert Perrone - Lead guitar, Percussion
Clayton Blankenship - Bass

Option 22 is a progressive Americana/Worldbeat ensemble with a revolutionary vibe. Fierce and passionate female vocals dance atop a healing groove of instruments from around the world including banjo, guitars, didgeridoo, shamisen, djembes and other hand drums. Positive lyrics convey a message of unity and understanding and soulful melodies elevate listeners' consciousness. Dubbed by one listener a "new age jam band," their flavorful style is flexible, ranging from funky and rhythmic sounds to mellow and melodic, with each member bringing into the equation affinities for worldbeat, funk, folk, jamband music, newgrass, trance, reggae and rock. The music has no boundries, and one must listen to the full scope of it to understand, as each song is different. Their full-out drum jams send energy bouncing off the walls of any venue. Another listener dubbed the sound "hippie hop." The only category that truly seems fitting is "Other."

Based in Princeton, West Virginia, Lori McKinney (vocals, drums, djembe, spoken word), Robert Blankenship (guitar, banjo, shamisen, hand-drums, didgeridoo), and Albert Perrone (guitar, hand-drums) have been writing and playing music together since early 2004. Clayton Blankenship (bass) rounded off the mix in 2008. Their songs come fresh from the moment; most of their songs are written from improvisational sessions.

With backgrounds in theatre, performance, healing arts (yoga/meditation), and visual arts, the group comes together with an artistic mind-set and a vision for a better world. The group has been prominent in the media as a cultural force as they transform their community with creativity. The pinnacle of each year for the group is headlining Culturefest World Music & Arts Festival, in the majestic Appalachian mountains, which they founded.
With three albums of original music, their newest release, "Choose The Music," is available now.  It features 12 Original Songs spanning styles from newgrass to space-folk to alterna-rock world funk. No matter what you call it, it's good music.

Albino Skunk Bluegrass Festival - Oct 15th, 16th 2010

This 16th annual festival is one the South Carolina’s best untold secrets. Held right outside of Greenville, SC in the small town of Greer, SC., The Albino Skunk Bluegrass Festival started out as a private party for years in the back yard of the Zeigler residence and has blossomed in to a 2 day Bluegrass extravaganza. Past acts included bands such as The Avett Brothers, Steep Canyon Rangers, Tim O’Brian, Larry Keel, and The Gourds.

Thursday

Coming in a day early we wasted no time checking out this amazing backyard / venue. There was one stage which was an old barn that gave you that front porch intimate feeling. To the right of the stage were tree swings and a nicely put together children's area, behind the children's area was a very colorful hippy bus which was reminiscent of the Merry Pranksters Further Bus. Behind the stage was one of the coolest tree houses I have ever seen, two stories high and overlooking a pond this tree house is every kid's dream growing up.

"This innovative and creative work truly creates a powerful musical experience that will, in the words of the band, "melt your mind." As the latter half of the name of the band's name alludes, be sure to stock-up on your MJ, sit back and realize the musical experience."
- Will Hackett, The Athens Blur Magazine

"They know exactly who they are and that is exactly what they do. And exactly why this CD gets an A+ review from me. It is not bias, it is what it is; JazzChronic came into their own through "Share the Wealth." What more could you ask for than a first album to, not only define who they are, but show how far you have come."
- Whitney Conner, The Voice

Legendary guitarist Jimmy Herring will be hitting the road under his own name, with a hand-picked ensemble of all-star musicians in support.

JHB2010webposter Pioneering a daring hybrid which crosses rock energy with the sophistication and improvisational fire of jazz, Herring's dynamic, exploratory guitar playing has been a key component of such renowned groups as the Aquarium Rescue Unit, Jazz is Dead, Project Z, and, most recently, Widespread Panic - with whom Herring plays lead guitar to this day. Much esteemed by his fellow musicians, Herring has also been called upon for stints with Phil Lesh and Friends, the Allman Brothers, and the Dead.

2010 marks the formation of the current rendition of The Jimmy Herring Band, featuring Herring on guitar, drummer extraordinaire Jeff Sipe (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Jazz is Dead, Shawn Lane), prolific keyboardist Matt Slocum (Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks), and the phenomenal Neal Fountain on bass (Col Bruce Hampton, Alex Machacek).

"I love all these guys and feel very comfortable playing with them.  They're all members of an extended family of musicians that stem from the world of Colonel Bruce Hampton. We joke all the time about how there are two kinds of musicians, those who have played with Bruce Hampton, and those who have not!  These three guys really have no musical boundaries.  As different as we all are, what we have in common is that we don't make any distinction between genres of music.  To us music is music and that philosophy is one of the things we learned from Bruce.

The Jimmy Herring Band will be performing a wide range of material, including compositions from Herring's long-awaited and much-acclaimed 2008 solo debut "Lifeboat."

"The music for the upcoming tour will be a mixed bag.  Some stuff from the album and some covers I have always wanted to play.  Hopefully there will be enough freedom for everyone to relax and have equal creative input.  It's important to me to have fairly simple music that will allow for us to reinterpret it on a nightly basis.  Another thing I learned from Bruce Hampton is, the simpler the music, the easier it is to reinterpret it each time you play it."

Herring who just toured with Drummer Lenny White (Miles Davis, Return To Forever) will be one of the headliners at the New Universe Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina on November 20-21 as well as performing there with The Lenny White Group and  paying a tribute to guitar icon John McLaughlin with whom he co bills the House of Blues concert in Boston on November 16th.

The Big Something Costume Ball 10/22-10/23

The Big Something Costume Ball held in charming Possum Holler, NC featured a choice collection of good people, excellent musical jams, and a spirit of fun and hilarity.

nickhornsHosted by Nick MacDaniels and his band mates in the Big Something, the event offered a nice highlight to close the summer festival season and celebrate work accomplished.  For those new to the phenomenon, the roots of the Big Something were born in the Anonymous Band, a Burlington, North Carolina group that had labored in the trenches over the years.  After coining themselves "the Big
