EKOOSTIK HOOKAH

OCTOBER 29, 30, 31, 2010

Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is a privately-owned, 250-acre campground and concert facility located about 45 minutes east of Cleveland, Ohio.  Between April and October, the Park hosts very reasonably-priced weekend concert festivals.  Camping, swimming, hiking, basketball, and kids' playgrounds are only some of the enjoyable options available at the family-owned and -operated Nelson Ledges Quarry Park.

Proprietor Evan Kelley is proud to close the 2010 Nelson Ledges Concert Season with an unforgettable Halloween party including haunted campsites, pumpkin carving, the outrageous costume contest, and all the Halloween shenanigans.  Supporting heavyweight headliners Ekoostik Hookah, super-special surprise opening act and outrageous fusion band Garaj Mahal will serve notice that the party is in full swing Friday evening.  The good times keep rolling with teen prodigy Marnee; Phalynx; jaw-dropping Janis Joplin tribute Ball and Chain; The Jimiller Band; Casual Carpet; and Ledges favorite Cherylann Hawk.

Admission is $50 for Friday through Sunday, or $40 for Saturday through Sunday.  No dogs or glass bottles.  There is no extra charge for camping.

Fresh off their win of the Under the Radar Series competition at Floyd Fest this year, Big Daddy Love is out on the road, racking up the miles and racking up new fans as they bring their Appalachian Rock to venues across the Southeast.

Lately, the five-piece band has been on a tear, playing four to five shows per week to new audiences in support of their most recent album, the critically acclaimed, To the Mountain.  "We are very busy," Daniel Smith, the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the band said.  "Our booking agency has been great and they are putting us to work.  We're focusing on the five-state region surrounding our nucleus of Western North Carolina where it all got started, but we're looking forward to branching out and spreading our music and our message as far as we can."

Yet even as the bluegrass influenced rock & roll band has been receiving increased recognition and air time on a variety of radio stations across the Southeast, as well as a slew of compliments from music critics and writers from Virginia to Georgia in response to their debut album, they aren't the type of band to rest on their haunches.  Instead, the band hopes to segue the success of their first album this year into their next effort, which they plan to begin recording as soon as possible thanks in part to their prize package at this year's Floyd Fest.

For winning this year's Under the Radar Series at Floyd Fest, Big Daddy Love received 25 hours of studio time at Blackwater Studios in Virginia.  "We're a professional traveling band," Daniel Smith, the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the band said as he and his bandmates were en route to Knoxville, Tennessee to play a show.  "We don't have paychecks or anything - playing music is how we make our living.  So anytime we can get free studio time to help us out toward reaching another goal helps us out tremendously."

But what excites the band the most about their recent success at Floyd Fest is the invitation they received to return to the Festival next year with a spot on the Floyd Festival's Main Stage.

This is my trade, these are my tools, this is how I make my living...

The commendation the band received for their live performance at Floyd Fest is well-deserved, as anyone who has seen the band perform live can attest to their powerful sound.  According to lead vocalist and songwriter Daniel Smith, being part of a full-time touring band is hard work, but watching people in the audience who seem to be truly enjoying their music makes all those highway miles worth it.  "We try to play every show with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and dedication to what we do," Smith said before they went on in Knoxville.  "We try to come from the heart and bring all we got each time we come to perform."

Come celebrate Halloween with Big Daddy Love! We are playing Sunday, October 31st at10 pm ($7 cover) at the Pourhouse Music Hall. Foothills Brewing is sponsoring the event and there will be a cash prize ($100) for best costume. We will also be performing at The Blind Tiger Oct 30th with The Deluge.

It's time to get ready for Bear Creek 2010!

bearcreek

What has become one of the most anticipated festivals of the year Bear Creek prepares itself for its fourth annual event at The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida. Founded by Big IV Productions, owned and operated by Paul Levine and Lyle Williams, Bear Creek 2010 looks to be the best lineup the pair has ever put together.

This year the music will kick off a day early on Wed night with acts such as The Heavy Pets, Honey Island Swamp Band, Zoogma and Aquaphonics. Fans this year will also have the chance to earn a free ticket by choosing which bands they think will be playing on each stage at each time slot on Friday night.  The deadline for submission is October 19th 2010 at 11:59 PM EST. Winner will be announced October 20th. Enter contest here.

Other Highlights for this year include -

Lettuce will be performing a special set of music on Sunday honoring the distinguished careers of Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis. The set will devote 30 minutes to each of their respective careers, including their solo work, their time together with James Brown and other work. Maceo, Fred and Pee Wee will play with Lettuce throughout this set and Bear Creek fans can look forward to an unforgettable funk retrospective.

In addition to playing with his Live Band, world acclaimed DJ, and producer Bonobo (aka Simon Green) will also perform a DJ set at Bear Creek on Saturday, November 13.

A second Dead Kenny Gs set has been added to the schedule. The DKJs will play on both Friday and Saturday night at Bear Creek.

In honor of Ralph Steadman, the artist who created the official 2010 Bear Creek Music and Art Festival poster, we are excited to announce the Fear and Loathing at Bear Creek Costume Party on Saturday night at Bear Creek. Let your freaky imaginations run wild and help us fill the Spirit of the Suwannee with a colorful swirl of energy and fun.

This year’s artists at large include:

Fred Wesley:  The trombonist, composer, arranger, bandleader and author known worldwide as one of the architects of funk music. Fred's work with Godfather of Soul James Brown in the 1970s established him as the world's funkiest trombone player.

Pee Wee Ellis:  An American saxophonist, composer and arranger. He was an important member of James Brown's band in the 1960s and appeared on many of Brown's most notable recordings. He also worked closely with Van Morrison.

Chali 2na: An American rapper and hip hop artist, formerly associated with the groups Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli.

Skerik: Performing on the tenor and baritone saxophone, often with electronics and loops, Skerik is a pioneer in a playing style that has been dubbed saxophonics. He is a founding member of Critters Buggin, Garage a Trois and Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet. He is also an original member of both Les Claypool's Fancy Band and Frog Brigade and has toured with and played with numerous others in a variety of genres.

Mike Dillon: a percussionist, vibraphonist, bandleader, vocalist and songwriter born in San Antonio, Texas. He is a member of Critters Buggin, Les Claypool's Fancy Band and Garage A Trois. He has performed with many musicians including Ani DiFranco, Galactic, Brave Combo, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Marco Benevento and New Orleans musicians Kevin O'Day, Johnny Vidacovich and James Singleton.

The Shady Horns: Sam Kininger and Ryan Zoidis aka 'The Shady Horns' bring the rage as the original and current horn section of Lettuce.  In addition to Lettuce, both have been consistently tapped to tour with Soulive throughout the years and appear on numerous Soulive releases including Next, Break Out, and Soulive's soon to be released Up Here.

Kofi Burbridge: The keyboardist and flautist of The Derek Trucks Band.

Jennifer Hartswick:  one of the most refreshing new voices of the twenty first century. A consummate performer, she thrills audiences as a vocalist, trumpeter, composer, lyricist and educator. She is equally at home singing soul, funk, pop and R&B, but her passion without question is jazz. In her seven years of touring, she has shared the stage and studio with such legends as Carlos Santana, Dave Matthews, The Rolling Stones, Trey Anastasio and Herbie Hancock to name a few.

Yonrico Scott: is a Grammy Award-winning drummer and percussionist. He is a member of The Derek Trucks Band and is bandleader of his own ensemble; the Yonrico Scott Band.

Jans Ingber: Former Motet vocalist and percussionist. Charlie Hunter says about him, “Jans Ingber is a musical force to be reckoned with. His affinity for deep soul music, whether it is Donny Hathaway or Los Munequitos de Matanzas, is evident in everything he does. His long years of study and practice, in what some may think of as disparate aesthetics, have created a unique and soulful musical voice.”

Donna Hopkins: An amazing musical force from Atlanta, GA she combines the elements of blues and rock. Influences range from Susan Tedeschi to Derek Trucks to the Allman Brothers and with her wailing guitar leads and soulful voice her style and substance can eclipse even the loftiest influence.

Freekbass: Recruited by P-Funk alumnus and onetime Bootsy's Rubber Band vocalist Gary "Mudbone" Cooper to record a track for a Jimi Hendrix tribute, Freekbass was introduced to Collins himself, who christened him with his stage name; in 1992. He is perhaps one of the most talented bass players alive today. HGMN Interview with Freekbass.

Jonathan Lloyd: a trombonist, singer and percussionist born and raised in Atlanta, GA.

With a passion for reggae, soul and funk/jazz but also enjoys playing all genre's. He has been a part of many bands during his career: Prodigal Son Music, The Robustos, Mandorico, Coxone's Studio One Band, Cadillac Jones, Kingsized, DubConscious, Errol Moore Band, Eugene IV, Gurufish, Entropy, Lloyd's Rocksteady Revue and more.

John McLaughlin and other titans of progressive jazz gather for a unique event you shouldn't miss.

Maverick record label and retailer Abstract Logix is proud to announce its first-ever festival event, the New Universe Music Festival, to take place at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina on November 20th and 21st, 2010. A diehard music lovers' dream, the festival's roster boasts an array of artists who handily defy genre categorization in favor if unbridled expression - all of whom seamlessly mingle compositional ingenuity and improvisational grace and fervor. So far, the list of confirmed performers includes iconic fusion guitarist John McLaughlin and his current band the 4th Dimension, master drummer Lenny White, the all-star quartet Human Element (keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan), fearless guitarist and improviser Wayne Krantz appearing with the amazing Anthony Jackson on Bass, Widespread Panic/Dead guitarist Jimmy Herring (who will also be performing with Lenny White's band), and Visionary Indian composer and drummer Ranjit Barot and emerging guitar visionary Alex Machacek.

"The idea behind the festival," explains New Universe Festival curator and Abstract Logix founder Souvik Dutta, "is to present some truly legendary artists alongside some rising new voices that were originally inspired by those masters. This is serious music, performed by accomplished artists, but it is also very spontaneous and fun. By bringing it all together as a festival, we hope to create an all-encompassing experience that will inspire both the audience and the performers."

"I feel honored to be asked to participate," says festival headliner John McLaughlin who will be on his much anticipated North American Tour. "My life has been dedicated to my instrument and music, and I continue to devote myself to music in order to be worthy of such a privilege. You will hear the kind of complicity that exists between us all - this is a very special element, and frankly essential for making good music."

Tickets are $37 and $57 for individual days and $90 for a festival pass, and are available through Lincoln Theatre Website (
http://www.lincolntheatre.com)

Since its inception in 2003, Abstract Logix has consistently positioned itself at the cutting edge of every element of music sales, production, and distribution. In addition to traditional record label functions, Abstract Logix has fostered a vital community of musicians and fans via its website, constantly taking advantage of the ever-expanding possibilities of the digital revolution. Yet they also understand that nothing can replace the exhilaration of master musicians performing in concert.

Chicago’s Lubriphonic is set to grease ears, move hips and leave the audience reeling on the dance floor.

Lubriphonic_031

With the help of New Orleans Ivan Neville on keys, The Gig is On perfectly showcases the broad range of sounds incorporated in the band's unique fusion of roots music with explosive rock n' roll and sensuous old-school dance music - part Rolling Stones, part Funkadelic and part Otis Redding.

Starting as the brainchild of guitarist Giles Corey and drummer Rick King, Lubriphonic is rounded out by five more of the finest funk, blues & rock musicians in Chicago (including a full horn section). On their own, the members of the band have either recorded or performed with such legendary artists Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and many more. They have fused their talents and experience as side-men in order to create an original project that is soulful, unique, and exciting.

Winning over crowds with their high energy performances, Lubriphonic has toured across the country, including two slots at The High Sierra Music Festival & two shows at The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. The group has opened for acts as diverse as George Clinton, Maceo Parker, Derek Trucks, Karl Denson, Jon Popper Project, The New Mastersounds, The Greyboy Allstars, Buckwheat Zydeco and more.

Lubriphonic's prior two releases, Soul Solution and Lubriphonic Live, have been featured in Jambase, Hittin' The Note, and Relix Magazine, where the band was picked as an "On The Verge" artist.

Lubriphonic is:

Giles Corey - vocals & guitar | Richard King - drums | Pennal Johnson - bass |
Garrick Patten - sax | Norman Palm - trombone | Andrew Toombs - keyboards

Sand-blasted roots rock with a sweet jam spread.
danger
Dan Lotti- Vox, Guitar
Mike Sivilli- Guitar, Vox
Steven Sandifer- Drums, Percussion

Sit a moment with Dangermuffin's latest album, Moonscapes, and you'll hear tales of rogue lawmen, forlorn lovers, and rolling waves. Based in Folly Beach, SC, the eclectic trio casts a fresh perspective on American roots music.

Setting Dangermuffin ahead of the pack are the refreshingly magnetic lyrics of Dan Lotti, winner of the Songwriters Hall of Fame's 2005 "New Writers Showcase." Lotti's strong, articulate vocals perfectly frame each song, creating a stout foundation for the tasteful poly-groove jams and improvisational passages. "The concepts of Moonscapes comes from when the tide goes out on the beach, leaving tidal pools that look like craters," says Lotti. "To me, that seemed like the notion of the sea of tranquility."

Dangermuffin's rhythmic anchor lies in the creative beats of Steven Sandifer (Drew Emmitt Band, Adrienne Young), embellished by the thrilling, twangy guitar stylings of Mike Sivilli. The result of their pooled talents is an inventive, fresh sound that retains an organic Americana truthfulness.

Last year, the band celebrated acclaim in Relix Magazine as the winners of the April 2009 "Jam Off" competition. Their fanbase grows exponentially with each new market and show, building off a strong southeast regional presence with appearances at festival's like Colorado's Jazz Aspen, opening for Xavier Rudd and Widespread Panic.

With two strong records already under their belt and a new flagship album ready for takeoff, 2010/2011 will prove to be groundbreaking for Dangermuffin. Give Moonscapes a spin and experience the post-roots groove -- a punchy, folk-jam pastry for the sweet-toothed soul of the south.
