Telepath live in Asheville 10/14

Performing with Lynx and Beats Antique at the Orange Peel.

By Keaton Rodland

telSometimes when a band plays next-to-last, the time allotted to them seems but a blink of an eye. This was not the case for Telepath and their fulfilling set of tunes. How much bass and synth can a crowd handle? The crowd in Asheville at the Orange Peel on October 14th couldn't get enough of the deep vibrations emanating throughout the building.

They will also collect toys for underprivileged youth.

As the holidays approach and the spirit of giving swells, Boulder, Colorado-based national nonprofit Conscious Alliance announces the 7th Annual Holiday Meal Drive this Thanksgiving Season, taking place November 18-24, 2010. Conscious Alliance has been hosting food drives at concerts and sporting events since 2002, collecting and distributing nearly 1,000,000 pounds of food to impoverished Native American Reservations.

Last year, Conscious Alliance's Holiday Meal Drive collected enough food to distribute over 1,500 holiday meal boxes to Native American households at Lame Deer Reservation in Montana, Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, and Houma Reservation in Louisiana. This holiday season, Conscious Alliance hopes to feed more than 10,000 families through donations and it's easy to help. A donation of $15 or more will provide dinner for a family this holiday season and only $30 or more will feed an individual for an entire week. For more information or to make a donation, visit www.consciousalliance.org/donate.

Conscious Alliance concentrates much of their efforts on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where the average median income is under $3,000. Many families in this region struggle to provide food and heat for their households. Native American youth are particularly affected by the poverty in Pine Ridge, where one-fourth of the population is under the age of eighteen. Not forgetting the children in these impoverished families, Conscious Alliance will host a toy drive too - this year at the November 7, 2010 Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! performance at Broomfield, Colorado's 1STBANK Center.

All toys collected at Kia Motors Presents Yo Gabba Gabba! Live!: There's A Party In My City! will benefit the youth of this area and be distributed during the holiday season. It is recommended all donations at Yo Gabba Gabba! Live! are a new stuffed animal valued at $10 or more.

Trey Hebson: synthesizers, sequencers,  and glockenspiel
Chase Hudson: electric piano, synthesizers, and loops
Sean Sullivan: drums, cymbals, and percussion

GREEN HIT listens to the music that exists naturally around them and becomes a funnel for the modern world as they translate their musical vision into song form. Using an original blend of instruments and effects they are able to capture tones and colors not typically found in popular music.

GREEN HIT was formed in 2005. Since that time, the ingredients have changed and the pot has been simmering! The efforts of this collaboration have produced something truly unique, challenging, and tasteful.

GREEN HIT's music appeals to a wide spectrum of people. With influences ranging from Afrobeat to Electronica, and from Funk to Post-rock, GREEN HIT won't sing you songs. Instead of telling the listener what to think, they allow the mood and feel of the music to communicate meaning. When GREEN HIT shows up at your local music venue, you can expect a full-on production, complete with intense intelligent lighting. The band incorporates multiple synthesizers, sequencers, tones, and colors that you won't hear on the radio, into every show.

"Purpose." is presented to you in all honesty. It is a live album which has been polished.

"live" - meaning all the players played simultaneously in the same room to record all of the music. There were no over-dubs, no click-tracks, and no safety net.

"polished" - meaning the sound was mixed and mastered in a traditional manner.

The whole of the album was recorded in three sessions during February and March of 2010. These sessions were held at 3rd Floor Recording, located at the Old Sacred Heart Hospital building, in Pensacola, FL., by Sean Peterson. All songs were written, arranged, and produced by members of Green Hit, and all songs are copyrighted by Green Hit.

It has been rumoured that the Old Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola is haunted. During the recording sessions several anomalous occurrences met with the band. Some of sounds on the album were donated by multiple Lo-Fi radio stations via Chase's amp. The content of these offerings brings into question whether the occurrences were by chance or due to intervention.

... back to the northeast this week!

bujThis Autumn will feature many new features at your feature-friendly, local live BUJ-performance spots. Let's start by talking about having the option to listen on wireless headphones at my live-shows and block out the room chatter to just get down to the experience. Well... it's finally here! Coined "SilentBUJ," I'm offering a limited amount of special wireless headphones broadcasting a stereo signal directly to your ears at every show, during every show. Rent yourself a pair of headphones for the evening and close out the world. The added option of plugging in your headphones for ultimate sound quality will be available very soon as well. House parties (as well as apartment, warehouse and open field parties) are also an option for up to 100-sets of ears with this headphone setup. Say goodbye to noise disturbances. Say goodbye to your regular show experience... it's just time to offer more. Check out jeffbujak.com/silentbu j for details.

In order to be able to offer this headphone option, I've had to update much of my gear, so you may notice some new toys on stage. You may also notice TeamBUJ in full effect at shows now. I have a great team of people working with me on the road so come by the merch table at a show to say hello to the team (and reply to this email if you love to help and if you want in on TeamBUJ!). While you're at the table, check out all the live recordings, t-shirts and your standard BUJgear that's available.

The long awaited 4th BUJ album (but technically considered my 3.5th album) is in the works and will be available on 12-31-10 for free download. I will recommend blasting this in your car on the way to the NYE show of your choice that evening. A remix album (as some would call it) will feature 10-tracks of live remixes that I perform at my shows... but with a twist. I will take a live-recorded remix, throw it in the studio, cut it up and remix the live-remix. Half-live, half-studio... all BUJ. It is entitled "A Coordinate Time."

I happen to be typing this letter on the road in Asheville, NC where the leaves are currently in full changing mode; as it was a couple weeks ago back in the northeast. I guess it's official that Autumn is here and I have much to accomplish. I will be trekking back to the northeast next week and landing in my hot-spots around the area for two-weeks of post-leaf-changing, BUJ-madness! Ithaca > Albany > New Paltz > Narragansett > Burlington > Hartford > Syracuse. Venues and such are listen below along with connects to their respective Facebook event pages. Madison, WI jam band, Ifdakar, and grass roots promotions company, WIJAM, have announced plans for their inaugural music and camping festival, IfdaKamp, to be held the weekend of June 17th and 18th at Whispering Hills in Kiel, WI.

A plan in the works for some time of IfdaInc LLC (Ifdakar's parent business operation), it seems a series of events creating a perfect storm have finally led to the festivals reality, come summer of 2011.

"We've wanted to do this for a couple years now," says WIJAM founder and Ifdakar member Jon Schinke, "We almost pulled the trigger last summer but decided that with another year of preparation, we could truly deliver the kind of festival and experience that we envision.  With the growth and popularity of WIJAM and our continued work as a band, learning and living in the scene, the timing just seems right."

Started in June of 2010, WIJAM: The Wisconsin Jam Band Scene, is a website started by Schinke and his business partner and band mate, Curt Biese.

"We wanted to figure out a way to bring more awareness to the hard working bands in this scene, in a way that cost these groups nothing",  adds Biese, "It can be pretty difficult with our meager budgets to promote heavily throughout the course of a tour, or season, while on the road and playing shows and doing all the other things that need to be done.  These issues are across the board.  Now, we have a network where everyone is in effect promoting for one another; letting the fans in your market know if a great band from another area is coming in, that kind of thing.  That type of thing isn't anything new, it's just that now we have a consistent platform on which to do these things.  Everyone really seems to like it."

The support of WIJAM from fans and bands alike convinced Schinke and Biese that the time was now to give IfdaKamp a try.

"With our ability to be able to spread the word about IfdaKamp on so many different levels and in so many capacities, awareness should be extremely high," explains Schinke, "Now it's up to us to deliver the highest quality festival that we possibly can."

Getting the word out early and often is clearly the game plan, with an IfdaKamp webpage on wijam.net, a Facebook fan page and an event page already up and running.

"We want people to be a part of the IfdaKamp experience all year long," says Schinke, "We'll be having trivia contests, giveaways from our artists, things like that, all winter long and as we lead up to summer, to keep people connected with what we're doing.  We want attendees to know that their input and interaction with us has a great deal of impact on how we're setting everything up.  The kids know what they want, and we're going to give it to them."

IfdaKamp plans to boast a colorful line-up featuring some of the more well known acts in the region.  From funk to folk, electronica to bluegrass, Djs to jam rock, as well as scheduled acoustic jams around the bonfire until the sun comes up, there will be something for just about anyone.

"We've got our main 4 acts, or headliners, basically nailed down," confirms Biese, "As far as the other acts; we know what kind of music we want for each slot and it's just going to be a matter of seeing what these other prospective groups do over the course of the winter that really helps us make the final calls.  Basically, we're looking for groups who are really getting out there and working hard to create their own fan base.  If you don't play too many shows or aren't that active, chances are, we'll pass this year and give you another look in 2012."

If nothing else, it's clear that these guys have the ambition, the insight and the experience to be able to put together a quality weekend, with the enjoyment of their guests as top priority.

"I've been in this scene a long time," confesses Schinke, "I saw my first real show in '98; Furthur Fest at Alpine Valley.  I was 17 year old, I'm 30 now, and that experience had a tremendous impact on me.  Since then I've been to countless shows and festivals, both as a fan and as a musician.  I know Curt can echo my point.  We've never really looked at all of this as a hobby but more as a way of life.  This whole thing; festivals, music, community, friendships, experiences; this is who we are and how we live.  I think there's an element of honesty and purity there and that's what the attendees at IfdaKamp can expect.  An honest, pure, blissful festival experience.  That's what I'd want if I was going to a festival, and that's what we're striving to achieve.  I simply can not wait until everyone's there, sharing the same dream."

COPE

Spawning from a musical family, brothers Dennis and Kenny Stadelman first started playing music before they hit their teens. Combining their family's love for folk and bluegrass with their own passion for classic rock, the brothers have always found themselves with an ever-evolving sound based on a love for all genres of music. It wasn't until 2002 that the Stadelman brothers, along with their cousin Roger Pinkerton, traded in their heavy rifts and accelerated speed for a more polished sound based on melodies and harmonies, drawingcompelling copeinspiration from theirlove of the Beatles. In 2004, copeVirginia native and drummer extraordinaire, Dave Gerulat joined the band after filling in on a few gigs.  The chemistry between Gerulat and the guys of COPE was undeniable, and the band's newfound sound seemed endless in its opportunity for growth. The band later replaced Pinkerton's fiery axe with Juan Montero's wailing saxophone and upbeat keyboard to arrive at their current sound.

The band's second and latest, full length-studio album, Going Home, encompasses each member's unique, personal style, fusing every genre from rock and blue grass to reggae and electronic.  Montero brings authenticity to the album's reggae/funk element while Dennis and Kenny add a new electro-jam appeal by using guitar effects and synthesizers.  Paired with Gerulat's flawless New Orleans, jazz-funk inspired percussion, the end product is a whirlwind of collaborative styles neatly packaged together into ten masterful tracks. Going Home is the band's most impressive and well thought out album yet.
