The Heavy Pets CD

The Heavy Pets present an enticing, hook-laden package in this self-titled release.

Groove in the Holler, April 15-16 2011

Groove in the Holler, with a dose of hijinks and hilarity, proves to be an excellent weekend of musical camaraderie and cross-pollination.

gith1010Although marquee, big-name events like Jamcruise, Bear Creek, and others receive the lion's share of the press when it comes to the festival "scene," I've always had more fun at smaller festivals.  In these types of scenarios, the properties tend to be more manageable, easier to navigate, and not choked with every last social group on Earth.  With that parameter in mind, I found myself greatly anticipating this past weekend in Prospect Hill, North Carolina, where

Mantras Return to the Blind Tiger 03-19-2011

The Mantras shred Greensboro with a long-awaited "homecoming" show at the Blind Tiger.

As I've recently documented, March marked my return to the "new" Tiger, with a series of shows at the posh, upgraded facility.  After reviewing Big Something for Homegrown on the 4th, I witnessed the cathartic stomp of Southern Culture on the Skids the following Friday, with Greensboro locals, the Malamondos, providing an opening Barrage of sexpot, spy rock.  As fun as those shows were, I really looked forward to March 19th the most, which marked the Mantras' first hometown show playing "original" material since July 2010.  The Mantras have been busy in the meantime, maintaining a tireless

Returning as Master of Ceremonies is Woodstock's Wavy Gravy, in the midst of his 75th birthday celebration. Part of the birthday celebration includes a May 27th bash at New York's Beacon Theatre, where Jackson Browne, Vibes artists Dr. John and Steve Kimock, Vibes alumni Bruce Hornsby and Jorma Kaukonen, and many others will star in a special concert to benefit the Seva Foundation.

Wavy Gravy will share the MC role this year with new partner and Vibes co-founder Bob Kennedy, in light of the recent loss of longtime co-MC Michael James Potashnick. This year's festival is dedicated to his memory. "Michael was family," says Kennedy. "He exemplified what the Vibes means to so many...we will miss him greatly, and I have no doubt that on Thursday, July 21, his spirit will stand next to us on the stage to welcome the VibeTribe back to another amazing weekend of music and family."

Tickets for Gathering of the Vibes range from $40 single day to $205 all-inclusive with camping. VIP camping is available for $420, and for the first time, single-day VIP tickets are an option for both kids and adults. Initially named "Deadhead Heaven," the festival continues to be an annual forum for fans across the country to remember the countercultural icon. Gathering of the Vibes combines legendary artists with emerging acts to appeal to a wide cross-section of live music enthusiasts. Suwannee SpringFest March 24th-27th 2011

15 years and still as magical and breath-taking as ever Suwannee SpringFest captured the hearts of fans both young and old. This festival has what most festivals strive for and that’s a sense of community, bringing together those who love music, art and nature, in a magnificently serene place “The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and Campground” near Live Oak FL.

Thursday

We arrived to the park early afternoon after a grueling 6 hour drive.  Having come in years past we already had our spot staked out next to the parks horse stables which are located on the far side of the park, its wide open with plenty of space to set up camp and great bathrooms with showers to boot.  The attendance for the weekend was around 6000 people making it very comfortable.  Today the festival opened up three stages out of six, The Uncle Charles Porch Stage, the Big IV Amphitheater, and the SOS Music Hall.

With Ralph Roddenbery and The Jones, Deep Blue Sun and Sol Driven Train.

This summer the Chattahoochee will boil over with live music at sunset as the second
season of "Rivermist Sunset Concert Series" tests the sound barrier along the riverbank.
" We' re trying something a little different this year," says Bob Fortin, Co-producer with Paul Rampulla of the concert series, which brings five shows to the Rivermist Lodge property at Habersham Winery this summer.

Grapevine Talent also will co-sponsor the concert series, along with Habersham Winery, Milton Food Service, North East Sales Distributors, and Nacoochee Events. Concertgoers can sip on local Habersham wine, or partake in a draft of craft beer while munching on goodies from the talented chefs from the Nacoochee Grill & the Nacoochee Village Tavern & Pizzeria, all the while sampling live music with a recognizable flavor. The bands should be familiar to regional music fans - some have performed at the Sautee Jamboree and other festivals or music venues regionally. All five of this summer' s Rivermist bands are rooted deeply in the Southeastern musical consciousness.

" We are trying to supply entertainment that enriches the soul with live music, from
world class musicians at a local and affordable level while being safe and fun for the
whole family" Rampulla says.

The music starts at 7 pm. Tickets are $10 in advance through the Nacoochee Village
& Pizzeria beginning April 8th, or $12 at the event. Packets of 10 are only $80 in advance. Children under 10 free.

Camping available at Sleepy Hollow Campground in Sautee Ga. Rivermist Lodge is located on Highway 75, across the street from the Hardman Farm next to Habersham Winery.

Sat. July 23rd American Anodyne
Former members of Big City Sunrise American Anodyne is soaked in moonshine and forged from gold, Melded in the furnace of Appalachia. These truly southern gentlemen are creating a brand of Americana reminiscent of '70's outlaw country while embracing the sentiments of modern times. American Anodyne's music tells tales of small town life and portrays the hardship of living in the 'new depression'. With songs depicting a lust for the open road, heartbreaks, and handguns their no-holds-bar style of portraying life in the south is honest and authentic. http://www.reverbnation.com/americananodyne

Sat, August 13th Sol Driven Train
Sol Driven Train is a band in motion. Perpetually piling on and off the bus, the momentum of their hard work and heart-felt music propels the group in front of growing crowds across the country. At shows, the band members bounce to the pulse of the music along with the crowd. Stylistically the band seamlessly mixes Allmanesque Southern rock, languid world-beat, swampy funk and downright catchy melodies as they swap lead singers and instruments. A punchy horn section adds an extra dimension of sweaty soul. www.soldriventrain.com

Friday September 9th
"Fire On the Mountain" A tribute to Jerry Garcia featuring:
Deep Blue Sun

Deep Blue Sun churns out a hypnotic blend of deep funk, melodic rock, southern-fried soul and west coast psychedelic sound. Versatile, well-crafted song writing, blazing lead guitar, driving keys, harmonies & a hot rhythm section meld together into a distinctive, danceable sound that will take you for a ride. Deeply rooted Georgia jam rock scene, the band was part of early incarnations of the Grapes before moving on to form Apple Peru. www.deepbluesun.com

A great combination of songwriting and groove.

Andy Shaw - Guitar, Lead Vocals
Chris Shaw - Drums, Vocals
Jim Shaw - Keyboard, Organ
Matt Paetsch - Bass Guitar
Eric Zielinski - Lead Guitar, Vocals

"We all belong to love/it's in our hearts/it's in my bones," Andy Shaw sings with a gripping rasp that can truly define his bands new record Own Resolve. Connected by blood, with 2 brothers and their father, and years of performing together, the flow is powerful and seamless. A band whose members have years of study on multiple instruments, the Andy Shaw Band thrives on bending genres. As the album comes out, the band is hitting the road and finding their path.

Andy spent many years of his life as an award winning trumpeter, and eventually attended the renowned Jazz school at the University of North Texas. Quickly his ears turned to songwriting, and after some time in Chicago he ended up in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio putting a full band together. "I want to make music that people can feel in their heart...the emotion, the groove, and the truth of the music. It's like when I listen to Toots and the Maytals, Paolo Nutini, and Ray Lamontagne. I can feel that passion." Songs like Righteous Ones, "We crawl out now/finding ways to rid ourselves of hate/and throw down our arms/for the right to believe in more," and the Limits, "Why can't our hearts let our love go free/into the past we can't see," evoke that feeling.

In 2004 the band started with Chris Shaw on drums, Jim Shaw on keys, and has featured several talented artists to fill out their sound such as Matt Paetsch on bass, Eric Zelinski and Theo Perry on lead guitar among others. After a Midpoint Festival performance in 2007, and an opening slot for State Radio in 2008, ASB began a 2 year residency at Ruby's in Columbus, Ohio. The weekly performance tightened their sound, and increased a fan base that remains loyal and continues to expand. "I love making relationships, traveling to different places, and connecting with all different kinds of people," says Chris Shaw. "everywhere we go I feel like our music appeals to such a wide audience."

Not long after the local press started to pick up on rumblings throughout the community of an electrifying live band on the scene. "the sound is an incredibly approachable tap into the reggae genre that is initially disguised by an almost alt-country feel and intense technical tightness, commanding audience respect, especially live." Dana Stewart wrote in Metromix Columbus. John Ross of Columbus Alive praised the group saying "the Andy Shaw Band. . .uses the best elements to create unique, laid-back grooves. Shaw and cohorts, among the hardest working musicians in town, have honed their trademark sound."

After two performances at the famed Bitter End in NYC, and an opening slot for JJ Grey and Mofro at Fall Hookahville 2010, ASB has earned regular performances all over Ohio, and begun touring through New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Texas. Heading into 2011 the band will release their new EP Own Resolve, will be performing a prime slot at the Columbus, Ohio showcase during SXSW in Austin, TX, and plans its first ever Reggae Rock Festival in Columbus which will be an annual event.

Own Resolve exhibits some of the best of what the Andy Shaw Band has to offer. Tight vocal harmonies, reggae groove, and touching lyrics, the album represents a band that has fully grown into their unique sound. The album opens with the first track We All Belong, as tight 3 part harmonies quickly excel into a reggae feel and something different. It's this different blend of an almost alt country tinge that is in the veins of this new album. Grown from natural inspirations on jam, reggae, blues, and pop, the Andy Shaw Band has found a way to make their songs exhibit them seamlessly, without coming off as poor substitutes. The album is a great combination of songwriting and groove, and looks to push the boundaries of how those elements interact.
