Officially formed 4 years ago in Chicago, and with roots dating back to the mid 90's Strange Arrangement is a progressive jazz funk rock hybrid with an emphasis on lyrics, songwriting, and compositional sections. Utilizing out of the box time signatures, left of center harmonies, and catchy melodies Strange Arrangement has quickly become a must see act in the Midwest, making their move from bars/clubs to small theaters/music halls in just a few short years.  Aptly dubbed happy progressive funk, Strange Arrangement draws on influences from 70's rock, modern day jambands, folk, and jazz legends.  A Strange Arrangement show will take its audience through a myriad of different sonic landscapes based on the philosophy of creating a moment in time, weaving the idea and art of improvisation carefully through their collection of original material to make each performance a unique experience for their audience and themselves alike.

With the release of "Polygraph" their 2nd full length album in four years on January 18th, 2011 and making waves in the Midwest festival scene in 2010 with appearances at Summer Camp, Hoxeyville, Rootwire, and North Coast, Strange Arrangement fans, appropriately named "Strangers", have continued to come out to their shows to be a part of their ever evolving sound.  2011 will find Strange Arrangement stretching farther away from their home base of Chicago and making their way from CO, to NY, to FL as more and more "Strangers" find their sound and live performances an exhilarating and fresh alternative to the jamband genre.

Chicago's Strange Arrangement  "Polygraph" album is one of the better releases from Chicago this year....... Richard Milne - WXRT 93.1FM - Chicago

"Strange Arrangement understands the power of music. Released on January 18, 2011, the quartet's sophomore release, Polygraph, offers a wide range of warm, heartfelt tunes that lift and comfort the soul throughout. From the first listen onward, the album is accessible and rich in spirit; there is much to gain here even from the most casual listener." - Greg Molitor - Music Marauders

"In the short handful of months I've known this band, they've grown in leaps and skyrocketed up the ladder of venues in Chicago." Jeremy Frazier - Jambands.com, Chicago Jam Scene

"Strange Arrangement's musicianship and songwriting puts them in the "best of" category of up and coming bands. Equally deft at intricate arrangements and memorable melodies, this young band has loads of promise (with a devout fanbase to back it up), and the live shows are always an exhilarating experience." - Joel Cummins - Umphrey's McGee

Featuring 4 days of music, camping in beautiful Hornings Hideout July 21-24, 2011.

Progressive bluegrass group Yonder Mountain String Band (YMSB) with special guest Darol Anger will once again anchor the tenth annual Northwest String Summit from Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24, 2011 in Hornings Hideout near Portland, Ore.  Featuring four days of music and camping, the boutique music festival will increase to a four day event in celebration of its ten year anniversary.

Born in Colorado during the extended restoration of new grass bluegrass music, Yonder Mountain String Band is comprised of Adam Aijala (guitar, vocals), Jeff Austin (mandolin, vocals), Dave Johnston (banjo, vocals) and Ben Kaufmann (bass, vocals).

Although the Yonder Mountain String Band was formed in Nederland, CO, its origins go back to Urbana, IL, where college student and banjo player Dave Johnston met mandolin player Jeff Austin. Austin moved west and settled in Nederland. Johnston joined him there, and the two met bass player Ben Kauffman and guitarist Adam Aijala at a club called the Verve.

In December 1998, they formed the Yonder Mountain String Band to open for a band at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. They developed a following among bluegrass fans and also among jam band fans as they played extensively and worked their way up the bar and club circuit to become one of the more popular acoustic bands touring today.  Darol Anger, exceptional among modern fiddlers for his versatility and depth, will join Yonder Mountain
String Band to celebrate ten years of the Northwest String Summit.

Featured artists of the 2011 Northwest String Summit also include Railroad Earth; Keller and the Keels featuring Keller Williams and the husband and wife combo of Larry and Jenny Keel; Todd Snider & Great American Taxi Featuring Vince Herman of Leftover Salmon; The Travelin' McCourys with Rob and Ronnie McCoury; the Emmitt Nershi Band featuring Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon and Billy Nershi of String Cheese Incident; Greensky Bluegrass; The Cascadia Project featuring Darol Anger, Scott Law, Sharon
Gilchrist and Samson Grisman; Cornmeal; Danny Barnes; Jackstraw; Pert Near Sandstone; Pete Kartsounes & Benny "Burle" Galloway; Elephant Revival; and the 2011 band contest.

Considered the Pacific Northwest's premier boutique music festival, the Northwest String Summit will provide four days of mostly acoustic music and camping in a family-fun atmosphere nestled in one of the most gorgeous festival sites on the west coast, Hornings Hideout, a beautiful forested site located just 20 minutes from Portland in North Plains, Ore. at the edge of Horning Reservoir.

A family-oriented festival, the Northwest String Summit will designate a specific family camping area where quiet hours are observed. The festival also provides a "kid's tent" that features a variety of arts and crafts and other activities for young people.

The festival gates will open to the public beginning Thursday, July 21 at 4 p.m.

Advance tickets are available now at all TicketsWest outlets and online at TicketsWest at various tiered prices.  For more information about the Northwest String Summit ticketing, please visit http://www.stringsummit.com. For more information about Hornings Hideout,

It's not often you hear of a neo-bluegrass band breaking into the national spotlight with a performance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, tour dates with Dave Matthews, and selling out 9,000 seat venues (i.e., Red Rocks Amphitheater). Yonder Mountain String Band is clearly the exception to the rule, having performed in front of more than 250,000 fans during just the past year.

In 2008, the band was even honored with the distinction of opening up for Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention (Denver, CO), which brought the group in front of 75,000 people at INVESCO Field at Mile High Stadium. Now in their 12th year as a group, Yonder continues to sell-out top music venues across the country including The Fillmore (San Francisco, CA), Red Rocks Amphitheater (Denver, CO), Pepsi Center (Denver, CO), Best Buy Theater (NYC), Stubb's (Austin, TX), House of Blues (Chicago, IL) and others.

With the band having one of the strongest touring bases in the industry, fans and critics alike have been drawn to both their live shows and singular studio albums. Reporting from the All Good Music Festival (2009), journalist Jarrett Vellini from CNN Showbiz Tonight notes, "The trophy for best musical set goes to Yonder Mountain String Band who, as the sun began to set, left it all on the stage for an hour and a half. The pickers from Colorado had the audience dancing and shaking, kicking up a joyful storm of dust into the cool summer sky."

Commenting on their recent studio recording The Show, Rolling Stone critic Will Hermes says, "The concept is great: liberate bluegrass' hot-shit riffing and blue-sky harmonies from its hidebound formalism and see where it flies. This Boulder, CO crew brings dazzling chops to the table." Produced by rock producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters), The Show marks Yonder's second go around with Rothrock and their fifth studio album released on their independent label, Frog Pad Records. Featuring the band backed by Elvis Costello's sideman Pete Thomas on drums on six tracks, The Show includes 14 original compositions written by various band members.

Yonder has always played music by its own design. Bending bluegrass, rock and countless other influences, they've come to pioneer a sound that they alone could only champion. With a traditional lineup of instruments, they may appear to be a traditional bluegrass band at first glance but they've taken the customary old-timey instrumentation (sans the fiddle) to new heights, transcending any single genre. Yonder has become a regular performer at major music festivals like the iconic Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Northwest String Summit and DelFest as well as massive multi-stage events like Austin City Limits Festival, Bonnaroo and Rothbury.

This year, the band has decided to invite some of their friends

ATHENS, G.A. - How does a band throw its own festival and make it a success for over ten years?  The answer is quite simple:  it's because of the love from their incredible fans. Amberland, a Memorial Day weekend tradition, continues this year at Cherokee Farms in LaFayette, GA from May 27-29.  Headlining the event will be Perpetual Groove with six sets of music over the course of the weekend including a special Brock Butler "Brockfest" set on Sunday morning.

"Amberland is something that is our OWN," says keyboardist John Hruby. "There is something to be said about that. We are ultimately responsible for all the decisions made about the festival, and with those decisions comes a great responsibility to the fans. We want to make sure that each year we bring something innovative and fresh."

This year, the band has decided to invite some of their friends from the music world. Special guests include Zoogma, The Mantras, Noise[ORG], Under the Porch, and Former Champions.

"It seemed like a logical step in the Amberland progression," Hruby says. "We wanted to showcase bands we felt were important to the scene at this moment; bands that we actually enjoy watching perform."

In addition, the weekend will feature live art, themed costume nights and the first ever Amberland wedding. Costume themes include the fan favorite "Pajama Party" on Saturday night, and a new theme emerges for Sunday night promises endless possibilities.  "Dress As Your Favorite PGroove Song" will allow fans to express their creativity and love for the band and the music that has meant so much them.

This year's festival will feature the first ever "Amby Awards."  Awards will be offered for best costume and in other categories.  Winners will receive prizes ranging from signed merchandise to tickets to future shows including Amberland and New Year's Eve.

Over the years, one thing that has made Amberland what it is today is its laid-back, backyard party vibe.  "It started off as a backyard party, and we want to keep that same enthusiasm about it," Hruby says. The fans take this time every year not only to enjoy the music, but also to reunite with friends and family from all over the world. Amberland IS their family reunion.  Together, they've shared laughter, tears, marriage proposals, rain and sunshine.  No matter how much people's lives change year after year, one weekend remains constant for everyone involved.  See for yourself, and you will know why so many come back year after year.

Amberland: It's not a place, but a state of mind.

There is a lot to love about the breezy approachable music that makes up the Heavy Pets sound. The 2007 release of the band's acclaimed double-disc debut album, Whale, launched THP into the national limelight with considerable international airtime on Sirius Satellite's Jam-On and its sister station XM. Festival darlings at Bonnaroo, moe.down, Langerado, NO's Jazzfest and Pet Zoo, which was created in their namesake, The Heavy Pets are notorious for performances filled with hot electric licks, multi-climactic instrumental solos and lyrics chalk-full of inspired philosophical leanings. Once called a "a living, breathing, force of nature" by Dan Sweeny of Relix magazine the band has the uncanny ability to capture the same spirited sound that makes up their live performance on wax and deliver it in a radio friendly format that sounds as good on the airwaves as it does booming from the main stage.

With five skilled musicians who are all also lyricists and songwriters, THP was first embraced in the jam scene for their raw talent and tenacious commitment to making diverse music with remarkable on-the-spot-improvisation. But like their cross-over sound, The Heavy Pets themselves have transcended boundaries, crossing a bridge few bands survive intact - into the periphery of mainstream music through upbeat, danceable, homegrown, skillfully executed tunes and passionate live shows that keep crowds lining up for more.

The Heavy Pets explosive live performances and contageous original tunes showcase a distinctive rock-funk-fusion that incorporates elements of rhythm and blues, jazz-funk, rock and roll and even a tasty blend of reggae for good measure. Their deep catalog of originals is captured on several live and studio recorded CD's including, Whale, Slow Motion Conductor, Live from the Outer Banks, Live from the 9:30 Club, Heavy Air, and the latest release, self-titled "The Heavy Pets. A touring powerhouse, the band has a large national tour in works alongside a new acoustic album yet to be released in late 2011.

DARK WATER RISING

Dark-Water-Rising

Charly Lowry- Vocals, acoustic guitar
Brittany Jacobs- Vocals, percussion/sax
Corey Locklear- Electric guitar
Ciera Dial Locklear- Vocals, keys
Aaron Locklear- Drums
Eric Locklear- Bass

The band name, Dark Water Rising, originates from the home of its members. Robeson County, known for its rich Lumbee culture, thrives from the nourishment of swamplands and rich, dark water of the Lumber River. The dark watered swamps are legendary for providing hide outs and escape routes for Lumbee outlaws during the Civil War.

Lead singer, Charly Lowry has endured the music world since she began singing at the tender age of 4. Over the years she attained local success winning various beauty pageants, talent shows, and showcases. Thereafter she had the opportunity to perform on the wildly popular show American Idol. Charly qulified as a semi-finalist among the last 32 competitors amongst millions of potential contestants in the fall of 2004.

In the summer of 2006, Charly and college friend/producer, Aaron Locklear created a small independent label, Greensky records. Lowry was able to gain local and regional success with the release of her first EP entitled, "Brownskin". After touring with her EP, Charly quickly realized she needed the full expression of a live band to release the sound from within.

Now at age of 25, Lowry and Locklear have carefully pieced together Dark Water Rising to express a sound and free spirit that embraces several genres of music including soul, blues, country, hip-hop, gospel, and rock. "Our music has never fit into any one category alone. We don't quite fit the mold of most other bands along the East Coast," explains Locklear. Reminiscent of 70's and 80's bands such as Fleetwood Mac and Heart, Dark Water Rising too stands behind a talented female lead singer.

After a stint on the road and burst of song creativity in 2008, Dark Water Rising has finally hit the studio to record their debut album. The first single released "Same Old Thing" expresses the emotional exhaustion of consistently losing a loved one to work, military leaves, etc. week in and week out. The song has a rich blend of acoustic/electric guitars; a foot stomping beat muscled by a deep bass line, and is topped off with soulful vocals.

Lyrically Dark Water Rising explores all themes of life, whether it is love, heartbreak, sacrifice, celebration, despair, or pain; all the while expressing their sentiment on the recognition of the Lumbee People. Dark Water Rising is a sincere group, not a prepackaged act, which writes and composes directly from the soul. Greensky Records invites everyone to join the movement of the Dark Water Rising.

Dark-Water-Rising2

Dark Water Rising takes the listener on an adventure through life with their debut album, "Dark Water Rising". With youth and wisdom on their side, DWR has witnessed the powerful effect of their music on people of all ages.

Driven by the rocking rhythms of Aaron Locklear (drums) and Eric Locklear (bass guitar), the music lends itself and the open floor for anyone willing to let go and spread the energy. As lead guitarist, Corey Locklear graces each of DWR's songs with passionate, carefully pieced lines and melodies. Described as the "bread and butter" of Dark Water Rising, Ms. Charly Lowry (rhythm guitar/vocals), Ms. Ciera-Dial Locklear (keys/vocals) and Ms. Brittany Jacobs (saxophone/percussion/vocals) grab the lyrics by the horns and deliver with soul, truth, and harmony.

If you want a listening experience that will leave you feeling refreshed, check out "Dark Water Rising". The music is different- in a good way.

Big Something returns to Greensboro, making a larger splash at the new Blind Tiger

Greensboro’s Blind Tiger has been open for over 20 years, and has long served as a haven for independent music. Tons of memorable artists have graced the Tiger’s stage in those two decades, so when word filtered through the ranks that the Blind Tiger might possibly close, many of the locals anticipated a void that would not be easily filled. After securing a new lease and establishment, The Blind Tiger has closed up shop at its old Walker Avenue location, and moved just down the road to a nice, new location on Spring Garden Street. My last show at the “old” Tiger was in December, where Big Something and the Native Sway played to a packed, enthusiastic crowd. When I heard that Big Something would be playing March 4th at the “new” Tiger, I looked on this as a nice opportunity to craft a review for Homegrown. I had not been to the “new” Tiger since its opening, so I liked the symmetry of “closing” the Old Tiger and “opening” the New Tiger with the same band.

IMG_9285The crowd for the show was large and energetic, but this is hardly surprising considering the verve and loyalty of the Big Something fan base.  As documented here at Homegrown, and in other arenas as well, Big Something has ridden a wave of increased interest over the past year.  After changing their name and releasing "Stories from the Middle of Nowhere," Big Something's travel schedule has blossomed, as has the size of the crowds at their shows.  With a sound that bridges the gap betwee
