"Within the apocalyptic resonance of this shout, 10,000 sparkling daisies will bloom at the end of a gun and force their roots down through the barrel in order to make Love to the trigger, of this we are sure." -Flowpoetry

Venice Gas House Trolley (Madison, WI) grooves body and mind creating a unique and organic live music experience. VGHT' s original jam-based songs and poems transport audiences on a creatively wild and transformational journey through darkness and into the light. Spoken of by fans as "A Cerebral Groove" and "Sacred Existential Fusion Rock," VGHT brings a sense of passion and performance to every live show. The Trolley's appearances include festivals such as The Muddy River Jam Fest (Woodstown, NJ), The Michigan Peace Fest (Lacota, MI), The 40th Annual Midwest Harvest Fest (Madison, WI) and 190 performances from Wisconsin to New York City. Praised by the media and fans alike for their new approach to words and intense yet chilled psychedelic jam, the band has emerged as originators of a genre that has yet to be invented.

Venice Gas House Trolley features the words of Flowpoetry, a three-time Madison Area Music Awards Best Artist (other) finalist and a finalist for the 2009 MNSWA "Urban Griot" International/National Performer of the Year alongside such spoken word notables as Saul Williams and Leonard Cohen. Flowpoetry emerged from the vibrant Midwest open-mic spoken word community and has performed over 700 times around the US. He has opened shows for such notables as Steve Kimock, Cornmeal, and Buck 65 and performed with members of the AACM avant-garde jazz community and James Brown's original "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield. He has also appeared on festival billings with The Jerry Garcia Band.

Venice Gas House Trolley have recently been embraced within the jam scene for their wholly original take on composition and improvisation. Through this creative mix, the band has released three full length domestic CDs and has placed tracks on British compilations. The Trolley's recently released CD "Burst Open" has already begun to receive rave reviews.

This full length (over 54 minutes of music) CD is VGHT's most fully realized, funky, jammin'and agressively rockin' album to date. Tracks range from the Flowpoetry inspired title track Burst Open (Dance) to the political heaviness of Bomb Drop and Busted And Wasted to the roots reggae rubba dub of Layin' Low. Add in some skanky blues, psychedelic rock and roll, and some of VHGT's unique take on the American West and you have an album that will move your body and your mind. Recorded in Madison, WI at The Blast House Studios and officially released Spring 2011.

Press
"[Flowpoetry's] verses find the right rhythm and pitch for every approach (and) he reads them with an ease that lets the music sing. ...(The CD) "Burst Open" (by The Trolley) makes the relationship between words and music feel new again."
-The Isthmus (Madison, WI)

"Venice Gas House Trolley lean more toward Funkadelic.... [And] the band as a whole can keep up with [Flowpoetry's] eccentricity via slinky-funky bass and drums, flute, and a variety of careful melodic and atmospheric interjections. ...Flowpoetry's voice [is] raspy and heavy over the cool suspense-building [music of the band]."
-The Onion A.V. Club

"The Trolley carves out a tribal, ambient, dreamy vibe.... They're a musical group that have finally arrived."
-The Isthmus (Madison, WI)

"Rhythm comes first [with Venice Gas House Trolley]. The band layers Flowpoetry's spoken word over jazz-funk-rock-jam."
-The Capital Times 77 Square Entertainment Section

"...a sound that doesn't shrivel when the meters swell into a rant."
-The Isthmus (Madison, WI)

"[Flowpoetry is] one of the most unique and riveting performers on the Midwestern musical and artistic landscape. The group [Venice Gas House Trolley] is on the cutting edge of the nationwide expansion of new forms of spoken word.... The band is unique, theatrical and musical."
-DeKalb Chronicle (DeKalb, IL)

"...very chill yet gripping. The band [Venice Gas House Trolley] is on a mission to bridge the gap between poetry and music and does so.... ...some hip jive cat daddy."
-Gapers Block Presents: Transmission (Chicago, IL)

"Words flowing over bass and drums thrumming jazz, groove, folk, country, blues, psychedelic, jam. Man!"
-The Telegraph Herald (Dubuque, IA)

"These are no frail photocopy-folk tunes, but rather legends and tales drawn from a deep well of historical experience; stories that place the listener into the leather boots of the prospectors and drifters they depict. When you hear music created by an American ghost, it gets you to your bones."
-Emmie Music Magazine (Madison, WI)

CEG & HGMN affiliate Sullivan Hall to showcase upcoming HGMN artists in June & East River Reggae Fest in July.

Sullivan Hall is New York City's premier small concert venue, with unmatched quality of sound & lighting for any comparably-sized venue in New York City, and a calendar always full of top tier talent. The venue holds a maximum of 345 people in a standing room only configuration. It is in the space formerly known as the Lion's Den, which we gutted and renovated in late 2007 and re-opened on January 1st, 2008. Big Sam's Funky Nation from New Orleans, who performed on New Year's Eve 2008 were technically the last act to perform at Lion's Den and the first act to perform at Sullivan Hall. Later that night, San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green played the opening night ceremonies.

Tim Reynolds & TR3    Sat. June 4

tr3

Tim Reynolds has been playing music all of his life. Starting as a bass player in a gospel band in his hometown of St. Louis to his break through band in the 80's, TR3 and forward to recording with & touring with DMB and the Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds Acoustic Duo.

Tim Reynolds has spent the last 8 years living in New Mexico but after a sudden move to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 2007 Tim ran across two players that would eventually form this new version of TR3. Mick Vaughn will be on bass. Mick moved to the Outer Banks in 1995 after many years playing in Chicago with Scott Bennett opening for such bands as Jimmy Cliff and Dave Mason. He also recorded with Liz Phair & Dovetail Joint. Mick had been playing locally in OBX for several years until he ran into Tim this past summer. Drummer Dan Martier grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and spent most of the 80's in various bands playing the club scene 6 nights a week. After teaming up with his wife and powerful soul singer Laura they formed Express in Florida and toured with The B-Side, Wallomatics & various others until being drawn to the Outer Banks in 1989 where he has remained an active player on the local scene. After a chance meeting of the three talented players, a few rehearsals and several stealth appearances around the North Carolina shore Tim realized it was time to get back to the basics...rockin out the way only Tim can.

Starting in 2008 TR3 is back...bigger, stronger and better then ever.

Papa Grows Funk/Bonerama  Fri. June 10

papa_grows_funk_band_photo

Idle Monday nights led to a full-time gig for John "Papa" Gros. In 2000, Gros launched an informal New Orleans funk jam into a seven year residency at the Maple Leaf Bar and New Orleans' hottest funk/jamband, Papa Grows Funk.

Papa Grows Funk has four albums - 2001's Doin' It, 2003's Shakin', 2006's Live at the Leaf, and the new 2007 release Mr. Patterson's Hat - and 200 shows annually on a touring circuit that extends from coast to coast in the US to Europe and Japan. PGF songs have turned up during broadcasts of Major League Baseball's World Series and the National Basketball Association finals.

"It's taken on a life of its own," Gros says. "We've found that there's a market for what we do, and it seems to keep getting bigger and bigger." Gros is joined by guitarist June Yamagishi, saxophonist Jason Mingledorff, bassist Marc Pero, and drummer Jeffrey "Jellybean" Alexander, who replaced original drummer Russell Batiste in 2005. A typical set may include Mardi Gras funk, New Orleans classics like "Sea Cruise" or "Hey Pocky Way," original material, and improvised jams. And they never work from a set list.

Turbine w/ Ignis  Fri. June 24
turbinelogo

From Bonnaroo to the 10,000 Lakes Festival, Turbine has quickly gained a devoted audience who have come to expect the unexpected. Chosen by Relix Magazine as "Artists on the Verge", they can scratch like a DJ with their harmonicas, turn an electric guitar into a silver fiddle, and sing three-part harmonies over wild, high-energy sci-fi rock soundscapes.

Hailing from New York City, Turbine has graced the stage at almost every major festival across the country including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, 10K Lakes, Gathering of the Vibes, and Telluride Nightgrass just to name a few. They have also been fortunate enough to perform with many influential bands including Del McCoury Band, Benevento-Russo Duo, and moe.

Playing the harmonica and acoustic guitar at the same time, Ryan Rightmire has rocketed this classic folk combo into the 21st century. He manipulates effects that can turn his harmonica into an organ, and even a turntable. Now endorsed by Hohner, Ryan has been to known to wow audiences with his ability to play the harmonica with a balloon. Jeremy Hilliard, in addition to being a prolific songwriter, brings an explosive electric guitar style steeped in the blues and roots traditions of the south. Jeremy moved to NYC from Virginia to pursue a music career, and happened to move next door to Ryan. They soon formed Turbine as a duo, and released their first album "Don't Mind if I Should." After adding a rhythm section including Justin Kimmel on bass they recorded "Reward" to critical praise. With Justin's ability to seamlessly play any style and sing, their three-part harmonies became a signature aspect of their new songwriting style. Their newest member, Octavio Salman, was born in El Salvador and brings a fiery approach to the drums that you'll just have to see to believe.

iLa Mawana is an 8-piece original reggae movement based in Boston, MA. Named one of the Top 100 Hottest Unsigned Acts of 2009 by Music Connection Magazine, iLa Mawana released their home-brewed, 12-track studio album SOLDIERS OF SOUND in May 2010, followed by a 6 week national tour where the group was featured at the 1st ever High Times Cannabis Cup on US soil.

Touring throughout the Northeast over the past three years, iLa Mawana has been committed to bringing people together and spreading positive energy to those around them.  Dubbed "One of the best roots/jam bands coming out of Boston" -Ingenious Concepts, the band independently released a self-titled 6-track EP (2009) recorded and mixed in iLa Mawana's home studio in Brighton.  The album resonates the warmth of
the family, featuring thick rhythmic roots and well-blended vocal and horn melodies.

Developing a strong reputation for tight pocket reggae grooves, iLa Mawana has put together a cohesive group of new songs for the upcoming album that capture their energy with captivating new melodies.

The group has performed alongside reggae legends The Original Wailers as well as 2009 Grammy Winner Burning Spear, Groundation & Toubab Krewe.  With great local support from 88.9 WERS Rockers, iLa Mawana is becoming increasingly popular in the Northeast with a hook-oriented vintage roots sound that's gritty enough to separate them from the
majority of modern reggae bands.

"Seriously solid roots/dub reggae that gets the body moving" -Performer Magazine

Upcoming Sullivan Hall Events

Dub Is A Weapon has set out on a mission to curate the history of dub reggae by offering their unique perspective of dub studio techniques live on stage.
dub5

Founded in 2001, the band has spent the last 10 years honing their craft on stage through headlining club tours across the country, supporting the likes of Antibalas, John Brown's Body, Easy Star All Stars, as well as providing the backing music for the legend of the scene Mr. Lee "Scratch" Perry on his tours throughout North America.  Dub Is A Weapon's national debut record titled Vaporized (released on April 26, 2011 by Harmonized Records) has managed to bring all those experiences together in a studio effort that was recorded in the tradition of old jazz records: live in studio.  "From the Black Ark days of Lee Perry to Tubby's Waterhouse dubs and discipleship of King Jammy, it's good to see that DIAW are carrying on the torch for dub fans worldwide. Vaporized not only exemplifies the evolution of dub but pays tribute to its history by retaining key characteristics that make quality dub music what it is." (Chuck Reinemann)

Press

"Bass and drum coming so hard and dangerous you can see the competition's bloodstains." - Village Voice

"A sprawling supergroup that combines the spacey atmospherics of dub with the brassy big-band soul of African pop." - New York Magazine

"Dub Is A Weapon charged ahead with overstated rhythms and a spiraling undulating sound that literally forced you to move or loose your balance." - Jambase

Recently serving as both opener and backing band of dub pioneer Lee "Scratch" Perry, the group recalls the grittier, hard-hitting sounds of Britain's Dub Syndicate. "I realize that most people's idea of dub is something that you sit on your couch and listen to while doing bong hits," chuckles Hahn, 32. "But I wanted to do something that would make people get up and dance-and something that was a little more confrontational." Mission accomplished. - Relix

In an effort to do whatever we can to help, Perpetual Groove (Athens, GA) has chosen to reduce the ticket price for our upcoming 3 day music and arts festival, Amberland.

pg

ATHENS, GA - The South is our home. It's where we got our start in Savannah, and where we live today in Athens. Our bond with our Southeastern fanbase is something very special. Having watched our beloved Georgia Theatre burn down not too long ago, we are no strangers to those facing difficult circumstances. The recent outbreak of devastating EF-4 tornadoes has really touched home for us and our families.

In an effort to do whatever we can to help,  Perpetual Groove (Athens, GA) has chosen to reduce the ticket price for our upcoming 3 day music and arts festival, Amberland. The event will be held in La Fayette, GA, May 27-30. Both areas to the north and south of the site were hit with severe weather that caused damage to homes and businesses. Seeing this destruction with our own eyes and hearing how our fans have been affected by the storms has been such a moving moment for the band.

All Pre-sale tickets will be $75 and $95 at the gate. Those who purchased a ticket at the higher price will be given a choice to either receive the difference at the gate or donate the difference to an organization of the bands choosing (Tuscaloosa Red Cross or other local disaster relief organizations), in an effort to supply those in need in the quickest way possible.

More information on how you can help the areas hit can be found at www.alredcross.org. This Red Cross Site will give you different options for volunteering and donations.

We are currently reaching out to different local disaster relief organizations and will have more information available at this year's Amberland. For more information on the festival, go to www.pgroove.com.

It's the very least we can do to help bring some cheer to those who are experiencing some very tough times. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered.

Here is a video put together by the band to help explain their thoughts on the situation.

May 27-28 in Martinsville, VA - Infamous Stringdusters to headline.
Rooster-Dancing

MARTINSVILLE, VA. - Organizers of the Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival are finished booking bands but not quite done announcing them.

The Memorial Day weekend festival (May 27-28) just outside Martinsville has confirmed the 19 primary bands performing at Rooster Walk 3.

The current lineup offers rock, jam, bluegrass, blues, soul, folk, funk, jazz, country and reggae. Rooster Walk, which takes place at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds, will also feature arts, crafts and food vendors from the area, children's programming, a new workshop stage and on-site camping.

Rooster Walk honors the memory of two young Martinsville natives who passed away recently, Edwin G. Penn IV and Walker E. Shank. Both were graduating members of Martinsville High School's class of 2000. Proceeds from the volunteer-led festival go to the Penn-Shank Memorial Scholarship Fund at Martinsville High School.

Bristol-based roots rockers Folk Soul Revival (FSR) are the only band scheduled to play both nights of the festival. FSR offers "the right mix of rowdy and roots," and has performed multiple times at FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm and Roots, and the Rives Theatre, among others.

Other bands scheduled to perform include: The Mantras, the Jesse Chong Band, Sanctum Sully, Rob Cheatham & GUNCHUX!, the Lizzy Ross Band, the Kings of Belmont, the Big Fat Gap All-Stars and Jamal Millner & Comrades.

William Baptist, also a co-organizer of Rooster Walk, said the secret headlining band was nominated for a Grammy this year. (Editor's note: Infamous Stringdusters are said band).

"They're by far the biggest group we've ever had at Rooster Walk," said Baptist. "And coincidentally, our ticket prices will increase slightly on May 1st ... the day before we announce the headliner. So tell everybody to go to roosterwalk.com today if they want cheap tickets."

Other bands playing RW3 include Poverty Level with special guest Sammy Shelor, Relacksachian, Travis Elliott, Mariana Bell, the Martinsville Community Jazz Ensemble, Riggs Roberston, Levi's Gene Pool and the Boys and Girls Club Steel Drum Band.

General admission tickets for RW3 are currently $35 for a weekend pass and $90 for a VIP weekend pass. On May 1, those prices will increase to $40 and $105, respectively. Tickets are available locally at the Southern Virginia Artisan Center in uptown, Binding Time Cafe and Woodall's Music.

In two years, organizers have donated $10,000 to the scholarship fund. Sara Kasey, a current freshman at Randolph College, was the inaugural recipient in 2010. The announcement of the second scholarship winner is expected in May.

A Rooster Walk kickoff party will take place May 6 at the Rives Theatre. The Lizzy Ross Band will share the bill with Town Mountain Bluegrass Band, and tickets and prizes will be given away. Tickets for the show at the Rives will be $10 each.

For more information, visit www.roosterwalk.com.

Rooster Walk 3 Band Descriptions

Infamous Stringdusters  -- This Grammy-nominated, nationally-touring band will be announced on Monday, May 2. They will perform Saturday (May 28)  at Rooster Walk 3.

Folk Soul Revival (Wise/Bristol) - Offering "the right mix of rowdy and roots," this five-piece band has been drawing rave reviews since bursting on the regional scene in 2008. FSR drew more than 4,000 fans to its Saturday night set at the most recent Bristol Rhythm and Roots festival, and turned plenty of heads at Floydfest 9 in July. FSR will serve as the "hosts" of Rooster Walk 3, and they will be the only band playing both nights of the festival. Friday (May 27) and Saturday (May 28). www.facebook.com/folksoulrevival

The Mantras (Greensboro, N.C.)  - The Mantras' music is a high-energy fusion of jam, metal, funk and rock 'n roll that will shake your knees and rattles your toes. The Mantras unified their musical vision in 2005 to be one of peace, fun, universal harmony, love, and community. They have continued to hone their sonic direction around these ideals while winning new fans over with every show during the last 6 years.
