Featuring sharp arrangements that vary in mood and perspective coupled with a sensibility and grooves for dancing.

Jay Beverly ( keyboards / lead vocals )
Derek Cobb ( lead guitar / vocals )
Randy Elliott ( guitar )
Scott Nichols ( bass )
Justin Heter ( percussion )

After cultivating an energetic, inspired sound and bolstering and augmenting the lineup over the last couple of years, 2013 finds the quintet poised, determined, and traveling in greater and wider arcs from the band’s North Carolina home. The songwriting nucleus of the band centers around Beverly on keyboards and lead vocals, and the musically dexterous and singularly determined Derek Cobb on guitars and vocals. Augmenting the varied skills of these two are Scott Nichols on bass, Randy Elliott on guitar and effects, and the band’s most recent addition, Justin Heter on drums, vocals, and percussion. After one year with the current drummer, and the eminent release of Communications, 2013 finds the band in exciting, new territory.

PURCHASE ALBUM

Never ones to rest on their laurels, the members of ESP are constantly writing new songs, rearranging older tracks from the catalog, and blending new sounds and elements into their compositions. The overall mix proves to be exciting and varied. The seven tracks on Communications incorporate varied elements of psychedelic rock, “livetronic” rhythms, flourishes of guitar and aggressive, forward-moving contributions from the rhythm section. The overall concoction and combination proves to be dazzling, and will serve as a welcoming invitation to a new set of ears, yet exciting and fresh to knowledgeable fans as well. From the opening notes of the infectious “Superstar” to the closing stanzas of the exploratory “Kazak,” the moods are distinct, varied, and rewarding. On five of the album’s seven tracks, original ESP member Casey Cranford (Big Something) contributes saxophone and EWI, adding a layer of spooky sophistication to the album’s offerings. The album incorporates elements of late night “livetronic” jams, cogent songwriting, and a sense of improvisational excellence that is lacking in most corners of the “jam” universe these days.

The Avett Brothers - Magpie and the Dandelion

The Avett Brothers brings America to Americana. Their sound is honest, down-to-earth, and at times heart wrenching or even hilarious. With folksy lyrics that reach right into your life from across the headphone wire, and melodies that sometimes seem as familiar as nursery rhymes, the band finds a way to connect across dividing lines of musical taste. Though somewhat rooted in bluegrass, Seth and Scott Avett and Bob Crawford stretch the boundaries to fold in elements of pop, rock, alt-country, and indie folk. Listening to The Avett Brothers is like reaching back into your memory to find yourself sitting on a milk crate with a group of friends on their driveway, watching the boys play originals in the garage.

The Wood Brothers - The Muse

They have, of course, always been brothers, but Chris and Oliver Wood did not come together musically as The Wood Brothers until 2006. After roughly 15 years honing their crafts individually – Chris a founding member of jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood and Oliver a touring musician with Tinsley Ellis and his own band King Johnson – the brothers eventually found themselves on stage together in a North Carolina club, and the sparks began to fly. Percussionist Jano Rix officially joined up for the band’s fifth studio album ‘The Muse’, and together they created, in this humble reviewer’s opinion, their best sound yet and one of the most endearing albums of the year.

RJD2 - More Is Than Isn't

Philadelphia based producer RJD2 has never been an artist afraid of experimentation. With the release of his debut Deadringer over a decade ago, he emerged as a “next big thing” underground hip hop producer, only to then surprise many by taking an unexpected turn and mellowing his production and adding vocals to his work, in a move that would now almost be placed under the chillwave label. RJ has also spent plenty of time exploring his own brand of spaced-out and sped up soul, disco and funk, as well as proving a master sampler. On More Is Than Isn’t, his fifth record, he does his best to revisit all of these facets of his past and meld them into an album that remains cohesive while still bounding about in the RJD2 stratosphere.

Four years with no studio releases certainly didn’t hurt Gov’t Mule’s stride.

Michael Franti & Spearhead - All People

Michael Franti and Spearhead’s music is not focused on the intricacies of instrumental deconstruction, digestion and discovery, but rather by the not so hidden truth that music can bring positive change through portraying a powerful, meaningful message. Michael Franti and Spearhead’s music is focused on one movement, a peaceful humanity as one. Although their music has progressed throughout the years from more politically focused underground reggae-punk, and hip hop to a broader message relayed through mainstream jampop, one constant remains; they always bring sunshine to your world. And their new album, All People, fits right in line as their twenty year career continues to prosper.
