All Good Music Festival 2009, Take 2

Reverend Zicka-funk's take on this year's party on the mount.
All_Good_welcomeIt was a time not long ago, when the All Good Music Festival was a humble vessel setting sail on the ever-shifting waters of the jam-scene circuit. Like a true captain, promoter Tim Walther has masterfully manned the helm of his noble flagship since it's christening, prodigiously plotting the path to success and steering the course strong regardless of turbulence.

All Good Music Festival 2009, Take 1

The 13th Annual All Good Festival at Marvin’s Mountaintop near Masontown, WV.

kellerIn spite of delays and technical difficulties we made it to Marvin’s Mountaintop in time to catch some of Thursday’s music. As the Security guards at the VIP entrance rummaged through everything we owned (for our safety, of course) we could hear Boombox’s house party reverberating through the hills. We got in and found our spot just as Keller Williams was starting his one-man musical carnival.

Now in its 8th incarnation, the festival will take place July 23-26, 2009 in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia.

Since its inception in 2002, FloydFest organizers have prided themselves in providing a safe and welcoming ground for a global community forum, and musical showcase steeped in Appalachian roots. This year's theme Revival echoes the festival's mission to serve as a holistic plateau for the restoration and rejuvenation of our individual values, and our living culture.

True to its Roots, FloydFest Greening efforts shine through this year with involvement of several organizations and key players. Turning our food waste & food-related packaging into compost is one of the best ways to increase the positive environmental impact, and festival organizers have partnered with PME Compost of Riner, Virginia to expand their system this year.

The festival is also proud to welcome Rock the Earth, the leading advocates working with the music industry and fans to ensure the existence of a sustainable and healthy environment for all. This year, Rock the Earth will be hosting two discussion panels that will focus on Social Change Through Music, complete with artists, farmers, and naturalists. Additionally, patrons are encouraged to stop by the Main Field booth and recycle their out-of-service cell phones for a chance to win discounts, merchandise, and surprise gifts! More information about this effort is available on CollectiveGood website: www.collectivegood.com/floydfest

The Healing Arts Village at FloydFest, sponsored by the Blue Ridge School of Massage and Yoga is a place to relax, pick up new skills, get incredible bodywork, and buy art with spirit. Visitors and early risers will have a chance to be surrounded by beauty, the festival music, and the prayers of many as they stretch the body and mind during several scheduled workshops and classes, including Yoga, Belly Dance and Feldenkrais.

The Global Village will once again be the most relaxing busy spot on the site, hosting workshops by "The Last American Man" Eustace Conway, as well as the ENO Village, an idyllic forest shaded Hammock Lounge area, provided by Eagles Nest Outfitters.

The beautiful festival venue, Blue Cow Pavilion, is located at milepost 170.5 off the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, the 80-acre mountain plateau offers camping, a progressive 'Global Village' area of workshops and demonstrations, over one hundred artisans and crafters, food offerings ranging from pulled-pork BBQ to fresh sushi to hand-churned ice cream, a comprehensive healing arts area, and a Children's Universe, featuring stage performances geared toward children, puppetry, workshops, playground equipment and babysitting services.

Discounted tickets are available from the festival website through July 20th! Onsite RV and Souvenir packages have SOLD OUT early this year, but off-site park-and-camp tickets are still on sale! For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.floydfest.com.

Band will celebrate in true Motet fashion with three CD release parties in Colorado starting July 9th
Dig Deep is a tapestry of sound that pushes the expectations of any listener who is familiar with the band's signature mix of afrobeat, electronica, funk, and jazz. Albino! joins The Motet for the three night party, which opens at the Boulder Theater on July 9th, moves south to Cervantes's Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver on July 10th, and then wraps up at The Mishawaka Amphitheater in Bellvue, CO on July 11.

Dig Deep presents The Motet revisited and refreshed, showcasing 12 great musicians who have contributed to the band over the years. Much of the material is geared toward the studio setting rather than their famed live shows, which is evident in Watts' rich production of interweaving rhythms and melodies. But in addition, every song on the 11-track album expresses the talents of these great musicians and plays well to the roots of the band's signature sound.

The album, in a sense, is a family reunion with Dave Watts on the drums, Joey Porter on keyboards, Scott Messersmith on percussion, Mike Tiernan on guitar, Garrett Sayers on bass, and the powerhouse horn section of Dominic Lalli (tenor), John Stewart (baritone), and Dan Sears (trumpet). Beth Quist and Jans Ingber put their touch on three tracks with some strong vocals and the recording is rounded out with Paul McDaniel on bass and Zivanni Masango on guitar.

The record will be available at the shows for the ridiculously low price of $1 and will be made available for download on the band's MySpace page. Once again, all three shows will also include, direct from San Francisco, the fantastic afrobeat big-band Albino!. These two groups together will be a rare treat for Colorado music lovers.
