The following artists will join host Doc Watson on the campus of Wilkes Community College for a celebration of "traditional-plus" music--a term Doc coined to describe the unique mix of traditional, roots-oriented sounds of the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music, and expanded to include Americana, country, "plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play."

"Yet again, the MerleFest line up fulfills the festival's mission of bringing in an incredibly exciting, diverse, and talented group of musicians," comments Festival Director Ted Hagaman.  "Fans can count on more surprises, spontaneous jam sessions and one-of-a-kind musical collaborations, and we will continue to add to this line up.  We encourage MerleFest fans to keep checking our website (www.merlefest.org) for updates."

In addition to providing the full line up, the festival's website, www.merlefest.org, is a complete source of information on all aspects of the event.  Festival fans are encouraged to visit the website and sign up for the MerleFest e-newsletter or register as a volunteer.  Fans can also follow the latest MerleFest developments on Facebook and Twitter.

The MerleFest box office will open for 2010 ticket sales on Tuesday, November 10, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Ticket purchases can be made on the web at www.merlefest.org or by calling 1-800-343-7857.  With over 75 acts performing on 15 stages during the course of the event, MerleFest is an entertainment value.  An early bird ticket discount is available through March 12, 2010.

MerleFest was founded in 1988 in memory of Eddy Merle Watson as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and a celebration of "traditional plus" music.  Scheduled for April 29 - May 2, 2010, the event is held on the campus of Wilkes Community college in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
Three Generations of Funk converge at Bear Creek Music & Art Festival!

Three generations of funk are set to converge at this year's Bear Creek Music & Art Festival Nov.13-15 at the beautiful Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, voted "Florida's Best Live Music Venue" by readers of Florida Monthly Magazine earlier this year.

World-class music is scheduled from such legendary artists as keyboardist Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic, Talking Heads) and trombonist Fred Wesley (James Brown's Band), to current club favorites Galactic and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, with exciting fresh, new sounds from The New Mastersounds and Toubab Krewe. Just a small cross-section, more than 50 other artists will fill the peak autumn weekend with high-energy, upbeat and danceable music with a dozen performers offering two entire shows.

By bringing together all three generations of artists, the Bear Creek Music & Art Festival features a number of "Artists at Large" who are able to freely collaborate with other artists with a high degree of spontaneity. Among these "Artists at Large" are funk legends, Bernie Worrell, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame perhaps best known for his work with Parliament-Funkadelic and Talking Heads, along with Fred Wesley, a pivotal member of funk poineer James Brown's band, the Count Basie Orchestra and many more.

Among the featured bands performing two sets at this year's festival are Galactic, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, Toubab Krewe, Dub Conscious and Lettuce. Other festival highlights include Perpetual Groove, Lotus, Steve Kimock Crazy Engine, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Hill Country Revue, Benevento Russo Duo, The Slip, Bonerama, Pnuma Trio, Papa Mali Band, Garage A Trois, Yonrico Scott Band and more than two dozen more. The complete artist lineup can be found online at www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com.

In addition to live music, 12 talented painters will create live art during the musical performances, providing their own artistic interpretations of their experience while on stage. These original paintings will be displayed and sold in the Bear Creek Art Tent.

Giving Back & Getting Involved:

Continuing its commitment to community in a variety of displays, Bear Creek once again presents its 'Green Program' - the festival's pursuit for environmental improvement with a pledge to use more biodegradable materials, exhibit water conservation policies, habitat protection efforts, increase recycling and more throughout the park's environmentally-friendly facility.

Bear Creek also hosts a weekend-long food drive in support of The Food Bank of Suwannee Valley by asking all festival patrons to bring a donation of canned goods and non-perishable food items. These items are placed in one of the Festival's many receptacle barrels located at the main gate and throughout the venue; in addition, anyone bringing five canned goods or more will receive a complimentary festival poster and sticker for their contribution. The festival is also hosting the second annual Bear Creek Feed the Hungry Disc Golf Tournament happening on the Music Park's 18-hole disc golf course. Its mission is to raise funds for the Food Bank of Suwannee Valley. This fun, casual and charitable disc golf tournament raised hundreds of dollars as well as hundreds of pounds of food during the 2008 event. Tournament schedule & sign-up details are available online.

Through proceeds and donations from a silent auction at the event, the Bear Creek Music Festival will support The Dreams of Recovery Foundation, Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization formed to assist individuals with spinal cord and brain injuries. The funds raised will help these individuals receive the therapy they so desperately need and the necessary equipment that will promote nerve regeneration and muscle mass. Grants of financial support will be offered for individuals to participate in approved therapy programs which are not covered by insurance, grant individuals with equipment to improve their daily life, and grant approved institutions necessary funding to conduct scientific research to find a cure for paralysis.

The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park:

Conveniently located between Jacksonville and Tallahassee, the Bear Creek Music Festival is located just minutes off of I-75 in Northern Florida at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida off US 129 north at the famous Suwannee River.

The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is a one-of-a-kind outdoor music venue and campground and was recently bestowed the honor of Best Live Music Venue in 2009 by readers of Florida Monthly Magazine. The 700+ acre resort overlooks the historic Suwannee River and offers unmatched primitive campsites, water and electric campsites, five shower houses and cabin rentals, as well as a full amenity package including canoeing, an authentic craft village, mini golf and disk golf courses, full service restaurant, natural amphitheater, music, festivals, a general store, golf cart rentals and more.

Ticketing Options:

Thursday night's pre-festival kick-off party starts the vibe off right Nov. 12 featuring full sets from Toubab Krewe, Pnuma Live PA, Pimps of Joytime, The Heavy Pets, Brother Bean & Gravity A. Admission for Thursday night's show is $40 and includes music, primitive camping and is only available to weekend festival ticket buyers.

VIP packages offer a more upscale festival experience including access to all music performances, primitive camping Friday through Sunday, exclusive access to the VIP area, reduced price beverages and three meals (Friday - Sunday lunch). VIP Ticket prices start at $325 until Nov. 5 and are available online at www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com or by calling the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park Office at 386-364-1683.

The Park office can also process requests to upgrade already purchased weekend tickets to VIP Tickets. Bear Creek Music Festival advanced weekend tickets are available now online for the early pricing of $140 through Nov. 5 and includes all music performances and primitive camping Friday through Sunday. There is no charge for children 12 and under with a paid adult weekend ticket.

Halloween is near and musicians from all across NC are coming together to celebrate.
The name says it all. This festival quite literally-- is a barn burner. The event will last all day and night featuring 14 bands, two stages, food and vending, a haunted campground, costume contest, and activities for kids and adults, culminating at midnight with an actual BARN Burning!

Event organizer and participating musician "Tennessee" Jed Fisher promises, "We are going to be hosting a regional mix of bluegrass, rock, jazz, and jam bands at this festival. People from the Triangle area and all over are coming together to make our Barn Burner the place to be on Halloween." Performers include: Tennessee Jed and Friends (Asheville), The New Familiars (Charlotte), Mountain Still feat. current winner of the Mountain Stage International Songwriters Contest, David Via, and Roger Padgett (Shelby), Boss Hawg feat. Mark Schimick and Jon-Jon Davis (Boone), Jon Stickley and Friends (Chapel Hill), Vertigo Jazz Project (Asheville), The Firehouse Rhythm Kings (Chapel Hill), Yesterday's Gravy (Greensboro), Big Daddy Love (Winston-Salem), Hammer No More the Fingers (Chapel Hill), Matt Williams and the Ocean (Asheville), Mixed Greenz (Chapel Hill), Wax Planet (Raleigh), and Whiskey Kills the Butterflies (Raleigh). Music will last from 10:30am until early the next morning, and will include a late night all-star jam.

Tennessee Jed's First Annual Barn Burner Festival will be held on the 20 acre Possum Holler property located at 190 Sycamore Trail in Prospect Hill, NC 27314, Saturday October 31st. Ticket prices start at $25/person in advance, $30/person at the gate, plus a $10/car camping fee. Firefighters and their families get in for $20 each. Children under 12 years get in free. Tickets will be sold at the gate entrance and are also available online through etix.com. General information can be found online at www.myspace.com/barnburnerfestival.

Not only is the festival celebrating Halloween by burning down a barn, but it will also double as the CD release party for Tennessee Jed's sophomore album, Barn Burner, featuring seven time IBMA banjo player of the year, Jim Mills of Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, as well as over 30 high profile guests from the NC music scene and beyond. Like the content of the festival itself, Tennessee Jed's Americana/rock blend represents a crossroad where tradition and innovation shake hands, and drums are, in fact, a bluegrass instrument! Let's meet up at the First Annual Barn Burner Festival!

A charitable donation will be made to the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
Help us choose the the best new HGMN studio album of the year for this year's Year End Awards! The 5 CD's with the most votes will move on to the final running.

Pre-show events where fans can "conduct" the band!

S2 MAKES ITS DEBUT IN SELECT CITIES ALONG THE BAND'S FALL TOUR - INCLUDING MILWUAKEE, PORTLAND (OREGON) AND ADDITIONAL CITIES TO BE ANNOUNCED;

CHECK OUT A SNEAK PEAK HERE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYJn64XRGXU

WITH S2 UMPHREY'S MCGEE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE INDUSTRY
IN INNOVATIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCES

Umphrey's McGee has never played by the rules. Now, with the unvieling of their all- new Stew Art Series (aka, "S2") - an interactive fan experience where audience members "conduct" the band's live improvisations  - Umphrey's McGee continue to offer their fiercely loyal fanbase the most innovative musical experiences available.

Umphrey’s McGee’s S2 debuted on October 3rd in Milwaukee – with another S2 event recently announced for October 24th in Portland and additional date(s) this fall and beyond still to be determined.  Hosted as individual events before that evening’s already schedule show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage will be entirely directed by S2 audience members. Check out this S2 video from the first event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYJn64XRGXU

The inaugural S2 at Milwaukee's Eagles Ballroom was received with overwhelming enthusiasm and to rave reviews. The sold-out crowd of 50 fans submitted their ideas by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever came to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface.  The suggestions were then filtered by the band's long time Sound Caresser Kevin Browning and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam.  The band's music varied stylistically with suggestions ranging from "an afternoon bus ride in Jamaica" to "drinking pina coladas...in a hurricane". As one elated fan commented after the show, "S2 was the coolest thing I have ever been a part of. It's always been a dream of mine to meet the band, and the opportunity to participate in leading the Jam for the band was a dream come true as well."

As highly skilled improvisational musicians known for using a complex set of signals on stage to prompt spontaneous musical changes, S2 is proving to keep the band on their toes as they navigate through the audience’s prompts. S2 events also include a Q&A session providing an opportunity for fans to ask about what they’re witnessing (or ask anything else for that matter). As part of the ticket (which will actually be a custom laminate that will be different for each S2 event), every attendee will receive an autographed CD of the Stew Art Series they attend - minutes after the event has concluded. To be clear, each S2 show is a TOTALLY separate event than the scheduled concert date and will be sold as a separate ticket - getting a ticket to S2 does not get you into the show later that night (and vice versa). The S2 experiment is just that, an experiment. Keyboardist Joel Cummins explains, “The improvisational elements of our show have always been one of our favorite parts about playing together - and we think the audience feels that way, too. That’s our inspiration for the S2 series. It’s also a great way to stay on top of our chops.” S2 events take place in the early evening before the respective show start times. Prices and ages vary from show to show - which should last one hour (with Q&A).

This is not the first time that Umphrey's McGee has taken new approaches to delivering their music to the fans. Before their latest studio recording, Mantis, was released in January of this year, the group made the album available for pre-order in an interesting way. Fans were offered more free bonus content the more Mantis pre-orders were received; as the fans "unlocked" levels of content by getting more of their friends to pre-order the album. The idea was to give the fans incentive to help spread the word about the album, and to offer a totally unique music experience.

But it's always been about experiencing Umphrey's McGee on the concert stage, and the group recently announced a string of fall dates, including some final festival stops of 2009 - Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival, moe.Down, and Telluride Blues and Brews, plus a special Halloween performance in Yosemite, California. And to get yourself in the right frame of mind for the upcoming tour, you can check out the recently-released live DVD, Umphrey's McGee - Live. Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS's Soundstage, Umphrey's McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered last February.

2009 has been one of Umphrey's McGee's busiest years yet, and as evidenced by their upcoming tour and one of a kind S2 shows, they refuse to slow down. The band's complete list of confirmed appearances is as follows:

SCARENDIPITY BASH 2009
Atlanta, GA
Mammoth Trick Or Treat Box Set and Slim two-disc set released on October 27, 2009.

Also available now: New solo releases by SCI members Kyle Hollingsworth's Then There's Now and Emmit-Nershi Band's New Country Blues.

sciWith the one-time constant touring machine otherwise known as The String Cheese Incident slowing their schedule considerably in recent years, fans get a chance to relive the group's legendary "Hulaween" shows on the forthcoming live release, Trick or Treat. The two-disc release - set to hit on October 27, 2009 on CD, vinyl, and digitally - is culled from several of these epic shows by The String Cheese Incident.   An expanded 9-disc deluxe box set edition of Trick or Treat  will also be available in very limited quantity.  Pre-sale  on the deluxe box set begins September 23, 2009 at 12:00 PM EDT - with the first 200 who pre-order set to receive a Trick or Treat cover art poster signed by members of SCI, and the first 500 who order being automatically entered to win one of 30 uncut Trick or Treat poster sheets, featuring the Michael Everett cover art poster sheet, plus all 7 mini-posters from the box set.  (These exclusive uncut sheets will also be signed by the members of SCI!)

Known to perform special concerts comprised heavily of cover tunes each Halloween, Trick or Treat offers selections from SCI performances recorded at Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998), Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999), Portland's State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium (2002), Sin City's Cox Pavillion (2003), and Madison's Exhibition Center at Alliant Energy Center.

The 9-disc limited edition box set of Trick or Treat includes seven complete sets - featuring must-hear renditions of Beatles ("Come Together"), Beastie Boys ("No Sleep Till Brooklyn"), Grateful Dead ("Shakedown Street"), KC & The Sunshine Band ("Get Down Tonight"), and Phish ("The Wedge") classics, among many others. The Trick or Treat deluxe box set also features signed & numbered original artwork from Michael Everett, special commemorative mini-posters from the Hulaween shows, personalized liner notes from the band, a photo booklet by famed rock photographer C. Taylor Crothers, and plenty of special surprises.

Formed in Colorado during 1993, The String Cheese Incident has long been considered one of the leaders of the thriving "jam band" scene. Comprised of members Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin), Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and Jason Hann (percussion, joined SCI in 2004), the group performed regularly between 1993-2007. And in the process, they built a large fanbase on the strength of their live show, as well as such classic releases as Outside Inside, Untying the Not, and One Step Closer.

In recent years, the band members have focused on solo projects, although The String Cheese Incident did reunite onstage this year for a show-stopping performance at the ROTHBURY Festival. Now, here's your chance to experience The String Cheese Incident in all their in-concert glory time and time again, with Trick or Treat.

Also this fall, String Cheese Incident members Kyle Hollingsworth and Billy Nershi release a couple of solo works.  Look for Emmitt-Nershi Band's New Country Blues and Hollingsworth's Then There's Now, in stores now.

The band is set to begin a huge fall tour, including a "Pay-What-You-Want" Western state run.

Look for Lotus to release a pair of EP's on October 6: Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass

Today Lotus announce a New Year's eve run in Pennsylvania that will culminate with an epic New Year's Eve Show with MSTRKRFT at Philadelphia's Electric Factory. Leading up to the big night, the band will stop at Mr. Smalls Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) on 12/29 and The Note (West Chester, PA) on 12/30, both with support act Tigersapien.

The New Year's Eve announcement comes as Lotus prepare to hit the road for a full season of touring.  Along their Fall Tour, Lotus will break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior - they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour featuring Lotus is an eight night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band's two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.

The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus' larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver's Fillmore, NYC's Terminal 5 (w/ support acts RJD2 and Junior Boys DJ set), Baltimore's Sonar, Chicago's Vic Theatre, the Electric Factory in Philly for New Year's Eve and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science feat Adam Dietch, The Egg (from London, UK), Big in Japan, Big Gigantic, RJD2, Junior Boys, and more. Don't miss a few special small shows: here's the scoop - the Denver Fillmore show is being bundled with the Quixote's show (to get into Quixotes, you must buy the Fillmore ticket), and also, for New Years, Lotus presents another "bundled" show at The Note in West Chester, PA (to purchase a ticket for The Note, you must purchase a bundled Electric Factory ticket).

Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the two Denver shows, both Boston shows and the New Year's run .  The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus' 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn't find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn't been finished by deadlines or they weren't coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding tempos.
