Ladies and gentlemen, Widespread Panic took Durham Performing Arts Center by storm with three nights of Southern rock and jam band goodness February 9-11. That's right, three nights of sweaty dancing, beer-soaked camaraderie, and more guitar licks than you can shake a stick at, all in the home state of their first lead guitarist (Michael Houser) and their current lead guitarist (Jimmy Herring). Let's dive into the setlists, shall we?

Professor Longhair: The “Big Chief” of New Orleans Music

In preparation for Mardi Gras and on the anniversary of his death, let’s pause for a moment and talk Professor Longhair, or “Fess”.

Though he was born over 100 years ago, this musical icon still inspires modern musicians and fans today. JoJo Hermann, keyboardist for Widespread Panic, told me this morning that "Fess' music is my life, pretty much. Everything I play, think, and do each day is related in some way to the music and lyrics from his records." And if that isn't the definition of a legacy, I don't know what is.

Allman Family Revival heads out on national tour

Celebrating the life and music of Gregg Allman.

We are in the sixth year of saluting my Dad's music and life for the Allman Family Revival...but it's reaching beyond that initial sentiment. It's galvanizing relationships within our generation of musicians. It's continuing a tradition of feel based music and it's an honor to put these shows on. Because at the end of the day I feel it's way more about perpetuating this art form than it is about leaving our mark. Our true mark is simply the continuance....making sure we inspire the next in line to take the stage."

Away From The Shire Billy Strings Asheville NC

This past weekend saw a Frodo Baggins version of Billy Strings and his merry band usher in Halloween with a "Lord of the Rings"-themed weekend titled "Away from the Shire" at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, NC. The commitment to their level of detail in their setlists and their costumes was as epic as the Tolkien tale itself. Each night followed the tale of one of the trilogy’s three books: “Fellowship of the Ring”, “The Two Towers”, and “The Return of the King”.
