Music, Magic, and Fire on the Mountain

For many longstanding summer music festivals, finding new and exciting ways to draw fans back for another season can prove challenging — but not for FloydFest. At Across-the-Way-Productions, the fires of creativity are burning brighter than ever. With its “Fire on the Mountain” theme, FloydFest is roaring into its 14th year with a fully streamlined reinvention of its roots, celebrating the authenticity of the music, people and setting that have sparked a music festival revolution. From July 22 to July 26, 2015, FloydFest is bringing a full five days of music and magic in the mountains, filled with endless opportunities to enjoy incredible music, healing arts, outdoor activities and more.

Located on a pristine, 80-acre plateau in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, FloydFest has created a limited-capacity event with an authentic atmosphere where fans can experience an unparalleled intermingling of music, scenery, community and self-discovery. Following a renewed focus on logistics for 2014, FloydFest is turning inward for inspiration in 2015, going back to early roots and embracing a family-centric vibe coveted by fans who have been with FloydFest since its humble beginnings.

“We aim to be a boutique festival that continually exceeds the standards of our patrons, and that begins and ends with listening to our fans,” FloydFest Co-Founder and CEO Kris Hodges said. “Our fans said they loved being able to park on-site, so we’re providing more on-site parking. They like to jam to Bluegrass, Americana and Rock n’ Roll, so we’re adjusting our line-up to reflect that. Our fans are our family, and we’re going to give them the best FloydFest has to offer.”

The November artist line-up announcement hints at a healthy dose of FloydFest fan favorites and suggestions for 2015.  Already on-board for FloydFest 14:

Drive-By Truckers ~ Leftover Salmon ~ Lord Huron ~ Shovels & Rope ~ Greensky Bluegrass ~ Sam Bush Band ~ Nikki Bluhm & The Gramblers ~ and many more TBA.

The re-invented musical line-up will pave the way for an increasingly down home, community-centered atmosphere, featuring patron-led panel discussions, group outdoor activities and evening s’mores sessions around campfires. Based on patron feedback, the Global Village will be completely revamped to offer patrons a full-fledged glamping experience with upgraded camping offerings, a cafe with continental breakfast and evening song and campfire sessions. The main field will bring an even greater diversity of offerings than in years past, bringing back the much-beloved circus trapeze and fire performances, added to the Healing Arts Village, extensive Children’s Universe, more than 100 unique artisans and crafters, gourmet regional food trucks and concessions and a wide variety of outdoor activities both on and off the festival site.

Now on sale for 2015, 5-Day, 4-Day and 3-Day Adult General Admission tickets can be purchased as a bundle with a General Admission Tent Tag. Coming with friends? Even better — this year, FloydFest is offering special HOV EZ Pass Bundles for groups of friends and family who travel to FloydFest together. The HOV EZ Pass Bundle include 4 Adult General Admission tickets, 2 Tent Tags and 1 Onsite Parking Pass. To learn more about ticket bundle options, visit www.floydfest.com/tickets.

Pics of Grace Potter, Leftover Salmon, Widespread Panic and many more.

In its inaugural year, Phases of the Moon Music and Arts Festival had everything thrown at them but the kitchen sink. A huge front brought heavy rains and flooding to the central Illinois/Indiana site and the going was a little rough at first. But the people came and the musicians played and we all made merry in the wake of nasty weather.  The Dead Images gallery was semi-adjacent to Zane Kesey and Furthur, as well as all your favorite festival vendors.

Even with the absence of Ratdog and Furthur, Lockn 2014 was easily the equal of Lockn 2013 musically speaking. Sadly...due to weather that never blew in...timing became skewed Saturday night, so I missed pit access for the WSP Collaboration with Steve Winwood. I DID hear the set, tho, and it was everything I had hoped for and more. They covered Blind Faith, Traffic and Steve’s solo stuff, new and old, and you could tell EVERYONE had their minds blown.

SeepeopleS are back on stage and in the studio!

SeepeopleS are happy to announce that the band's fourth and most recent album release, 2009's "Apocalypse Cow Volume 2," is finally available on iTunes and most major online music retailers.  The album, only originally available for download for a brief time on the band's website, has been out of print for several years. Now, for the first time ever, the band's entire catalog is available online. SeepeopleS recently played their first show since 2011 and are back in the studio finishing a double album (already entitled Dead Souls Sessions) with Producer Will Holland (Pixies, Dead Can Dance) due for release this spring 2015 on RascalZ RecordZ.  More at www.seepeoples.com

November 13th – 16th, 2014 at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, FL

Bear Creek Music & Art Festival has released the schedule for the eighth annual event taking place November 13th – 16th, 2014 at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, FL. Steeped in the tradition of New Orleans and New York funk music, Bear Creek’s exceptional line-up also showcases the eclectic nature of the scene; encompassing genre-defining performers in world and roots music, live electronic, rock, and everything in between. As is tradition at Bear Creek, many of the bands perform on two separate dates during the weekend and several talented instrumentalists act as artists-at-large, creating memorable surprise sit-ins and inspired performances.

Schedule: www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com/daily-schedule

Bear Creek will treat fans to the debut performance of the Mande Superjam, an all-star group of African and American musicians including members of Benyoro, Kreative Pandemonium and Toubab Krewe, and special guests Balla Kouyate and Raja Kassis. The music of West Africa is the bedrock of many American styles of music, and listeners often hear echoes of blues, jazz, and Appalachian music in the circular melodies and dense rhythms of the region. This supergroup will perform updated interpretations of the centuries-old repertoire of West African jelis (traditional musicians) creating a tour-de-force of hypnotic grooves and majestic melodies.

For 2014, Bear Creek has expanded their Yoga & Workshops Program offering more than 10 classes throughout the weekend including Gentle & Ayurveda Yoga, Restorative Yoga, AcroPlay, Yin Yoga to live Music, West African Drumming Workshop, Basics of Poi, and more.

On Saturday, fans can join Zach Deputy as he hosts a charity disc golf tournament on the fantastic 18-hole Magnolia Disc Golf Course at SOSMP benefiting The Spirit of the Suwannee Kids Music Camp.

Offering late night entertainment, the two-channel Silent Disco will feature sounds by Sir Charles, Vlad the Inhaler, Juan Basshead, Elliot Mess, and more.

Theme nights have also been unveiled for the weekend! Friday, as always, is Warm & Fuzzy. It’s important to remember that it can get cold at Brrrr Creek come nightime, so remember to bring something warm. Saturday, it’s time for Superheroes and Cops ‘n Robbers. Come costumed as your favorite fictional hero or villain. Sunday is Purple Day, in honor of SOSMO’s dear friend Rachel Morningstar Hoffman.

Recognized as one of the most beautiful live music venues in the country, Bear Creek goers at SOSMP can enjoy music on three outdoor stages and one indoor stage including the famed Amphitheater Stage, set in the midst of towering pine and oak trees decorated with Spanish moss. The park also offers guest comforts including a general store, full-service restaurant, showers and water stations. Fans can upgrade their experience with VIP tickets, RV hook ups, cabin rentals and golf cart rentals.

Floydfest 2014

Floydfest 2014
After an exhausting year of being slammed unforgivingly by critics and gently nudged by lovers and long time fans for the rough ride of the 2013 festival, Floydfest bravely carried the torch into another edition of what has become one of the best and most well known festivals in the country. Even if only to mark the tradition and go through the motions, organizers bravely and boldly carried on.

Floydfest emerged and redeemed themselves with some major logistical victories. The transit system took the most noticeable upgrade; "I heard they hired out the same system that is used for Coachella and SXSW."  The charter busses were super cush compared to the school busses of days past; they were air conditioned and comfortable. Directions for departure and gear check were specific and left no room for error; the whole system was efficient and fast. In fact, I did not observe a single waiting line the entire festival. Well done, ATW Productions.
