Howling Wolves Present has announced dates for the eighth annual Purple Hatter’s Ball. Taking place at the famed Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, Florida May 8 - 10, 2015, the three-day music festival benefits The Rachel Morningstar Foundation (a non-profit 501c3 organization) in honor of longtime SOSMP friend and music festival lover Rachel Morningstar Hoffman.

5 favorites from the Downtown River Jam

After my introduction to several fantastic Florida bands at Bear Creek Music Festival, I realized I didn’t know as much about the Florida scene as I thought. So when the time came to attend the Downtown River Jam in St. Petersburg, I was more than ready to get better acquainted.

On Friday and Saturday, December 5-6, four venues in the St. Pete area came together to showcase some amazing regional musicians. I live in Orlando, so I was only in town for Saturday, and a bit of unfortunate scheduling meant having to choose between some bands I wanted to see, but here are a few of my favorites from the day.

Featuring Widespread Panic, Greg Allman, Gov't Mule & many more!

Bear Creek Brings The Funk On Down

Bear Creek Brings The Funk On Down
For a musical gathering that is known for being funky, the 8th Annual Bear Creek Music & Art Festival, Nov. 13-16 2014, really outdid itself this year.

The “usual suspects” like Lettuce, Dumpstaphunk, The New Mastersounds, Orgone, and Soulive were joined by lesser known outfits like Freddy’s Finest, Mingo Fishtrap, The Main Squeeze, Green Sunshine, Earphunk, Funky Knuckles, and The Heard to spread a thick layer of greasy funk across the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. Throw in a helping of soul from St. Paul and The Broken Bones, The Nicholas Payton Trio, Curtis Harding, The Nth Power, and the Alecia Chakour Band, and you’ve got a good roue for some tasty gumbo.

Magnolia Festival 2014 - Photos by Robbi Cohn
Always a favorite, this year’s Magnolia Festival was no exception.

The intimate vibe at Spirit of the Suwanee Music Park is what keeps this venue perpetually busy and what keeps the caliber of music a critical success. The amphitheatre, strewn with hammocks hung from Spanish moss festooned trees, was the principal venue this year, with secondary stages in the meadow and at the porch.

Headliners were Lyle Lovett, Indigo Girls, Dr. John and Anders Osborne, but favorites like Donna the Buffalo, Honey Island Swamp Band, Grayson Capps and Marcia Ball appeared as well as newcomers like the Parker Urban Band and Bryce Alastair.
