JJ Grey & Mofro, Marcus King Band, Billy Strings, Jerry Douglas Band, YARN & more will play in 2018!

Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival organizers have announced the initial lineup for Rooster Walk 10, set for Thursday to Sunday, May 24-27, 2018. The event will return to Pop's Farm in Martinsville, VA for its tenth annual music and arts festival. JJ Grey & Mofro, as well as Marcus King Band, Billy Strings, The Jerry Douglas Band, YARN and The Commonheart round out the early-bird artist announcement. More artists will be added to the lineup in the coming months.

Early-bird tickets for Rooster Walk 10 were released at 12 pm EST on Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, via RoosterWalk.com. Early-bird tickets are available while supplies last, or until the next batch of bands are announced in January, whichever comes first. At that point, tickets will increase in price.

General admission camping is included in the price of admission this year. Popular camping upgrades, including RV passes and Near Car Camping passes, are on sale now. On-site parking passes for general admission and VIP patrons are also available for purchase online.

"This is by far the strongest batch of bands we've ever announced in November," said Johnny Buck, a co-founder of Rooster Walk. "It's a great way to kick off Rooster Walk, and it's hard to believe we're approaching our tenth festival. We can't thank the sponsors, volunteers and 'festival family' enough for their tremendous support over years. The community's backing of Rooster Walk is the single biggest reason that we've grown to this point and made it to Number 10."

Rooster Walk is a family-friendly festival located at the idyllic outdoor music venue Pop's Farm, located at 675 Hobson Road in Axton, Va., just outside of Martinsville, Va. The festival will feature roughly 50 bands of varying genres, as well as arts/ crafts/ food vendors, children's activities, outdoor programming, delicious craft beers from some of the nation's best breweries, on-site camping and more.

Rooster Walk has been named one of the Top 5 festivals in the state by the Richmond-Times Dispatch. It also has been voted the region's Most Creative Charitable Event by readers of Virginia Living Magazine. The festival was created in memory of late Martinsville natives Edwin "The Rooster" Penn and Walker Shank, who graduated from Martinsville High School in 2000 along with Buck and fellow festival co-founder William Baptist.

A portion of proceeds from the festival will be donated to local and regional charities, including Rooster Walk's own Penn-Shank Memorial Endowment Scholarship Fund for students at Martinsville High School, and the Rooster Walk Music Instrument Program for public band programs in the local city and county school systems. In 2017, the festival donated more than $25,000 to local and regional charities.

The festival is produced by Rooster Walk Inc., a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to promoting music, arts and education in its home of Martinsville-Henry County. Since 2009, Rooster Walk Inc. has donated more than $150,000 to local and regional charities.

Call of the Wild … ‘FloydFest 18~Wild’ announced for July 25-29, 2018

Answer the call of the wild ... FloydFest 18~Wild, the latest annual offering of the Southeast's premier summer outdoor music festival, taking place Wednesday to Sunday, July 25 to 29, 2018, at Milepost 170.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd, Va. Foster the People, The Infamous Stringdusters, Antibalas, Hiss Golden Messenger, The Steel Wheels, Devon Gilfillian, Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys, and 2017 FloydFest On-the-Rise Competition winner, South Hill Banks, and runner-up, Dharma Bombs, round out Across-the-Way Productions' initial artist announcement for the 18th annual event. Second round announcements include: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Langhorne Slim, and Nikki Lane. New additions and surprises are aplenty for FloydFest 18, one of which is the much-requested return of Onsite RV Parking.

"This is 'wild' as we find in nature -- it's an essence, it's an energy, it's an authentic state of being," Kris Hodges, co-founder and CEO, explained. "Our lives these days get so disconnected, so discordant, so consumed in a rat race, that we forget to stop and enjoy and embrace this life. We invite you to recall your 'wild;' be as a child."

Check out HGMN's review and photo gallery from Floydfest 2017!

Recently receiving top accolades from TIME Magazine, Blue Ridge Outdoors, Charlie Rose and Fox News, FloydFest 18's initial artist lineup capstones Indie-powerhouse Foster The People fresh-off the heels of their third album, Sacred Hearts Club (July 2017), celebrated as a dazzling demonstration of the group's infinite creative powers, fusing neo-psychedelia, punk, funk, electronic, dance and hip-hop. Having catapulted to international stardom via 2010's "Pumped Up Kicks," Foster The People haven't slowed their trajectory, receiving multiple Grammy Award nominations, touring globally, and reinventing their sound, defying while defining new musical genres. The Infamous Stringdusters joins the FloydFest 18~Wild lineup five days after the debut of the band's third release of 2017 (Undercover Vol. 2, following Laws of Gravity and Laws of Gravity Live). Letting the past inform and the present propel, the Stringdusters' style and substance are uniquely infamous and remarkably popular, positioning the band perfectly for a return trip to the mountain.

Inspired by Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band and Eddie Palmieri's Harlem River Drive Orchestra, Brooklyn-based Antibalas are heralded afrobeat ambassadors, credited with introducing the West African-funk-jazz fusion genre to a wider global audience. Also making waves on a global scale is Hiss Golden Messenger, whose latest album Hallelujah Anyhow (September 2017) is defining the next direction of the formidable Indie-folk genre. Hailing from our home -- Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains -- The Steel Wheels return for FloydFest 18 for another progressive folk infusion, and, for the first time on the mountain, Wild welcomes Devon Gilfillian, who will fire his twin barrels of gospel-blues and southern soul into the emerging lineup. Joining this extraordinary initial bill are 2017 FloydFest On-the-Rise Competition winner and runner-up, South Hill Banks and Dharma Bombs, as well as Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys, a fast-picking folk band peppered with an indelibly soulful voice.

The unforgettable magic that was FloydFest 16's (Dreamweavin') and FloydFest 17's (Freedom) Buffalo Mountain Jam returns in 2018 for its third-annual installment, with more details due for release in the coming months. Known for its impromptu artist collaborations, super jams and special guests, the Buffalo Mountain Jam's lineup gets even 'wilder' for the 18th annual event -- not to be missed.

"The Buffalo Mountain Jam is extremely important to witness -- it's a capstone of the festival, spotlighting 'new-school newgrass,'" Hodges said. "It's a free-form jam that speaks to the quality of the musicians that make it happen ... and this year it's going to get wild."

As always, FloydFest will also include vibrant and varied vendors, quality craft brews and chews, healing arts, workshops and whimsy, children's activities, onsite art installations and a final lineup featuring more than 100 artists performing on nine+ stages.

Voted 'Best Outdoor Music Festival,' FloydFest is also selling tickets to its Outdoor Adventure programs during the early-bird ticket on-sale, including its popular On-the-Water Guided Float Trips and Belcher Mountain Beatdown mountain-bike excursion.

FloydFest is located at Milepost 170.5 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Floyd, Va. Detailed directions are available by clicking to www.floydfest.com.

Oteil and Friends - 11/05/17, Raleigh NC

I haven’t been to church in a long time. In fact you could say I’ve been “out in the wilderness” for years. But at The Lincoln Theater in Raleigh on Sunday, I saw the light. I’m here to testify, it was a full-on revival!

Bassist extraordinaire Oteil Burbridge, currently of Dead & Company and formerly of the Allman Brothers, brought a band beyond description to town, and by the end of the night, the audience was in a frenzy, singing and dancing and smiling ear to ear. The Lincoln, originally built in 1939 as a movie theater catering mainly to African-American audiences during segregation, was the perfect venue for this celebration.

Hulaween 2017

Hulaween 2017
The Spirit of Suwannee Music Park is one of my favorite places on earth.

HGMN vended the first Magnolia Music Festival there in October 1997 and we took the booth there as often as possible over the next 20 years. I've personally vended over 50 festivals there and always look forward to returning. So while the amazing music park was nothing new to me, it was my first time attending Hulaween and also my first time sans vending booth at the park. That's right - nothing to do but take in as much music and camaraderie as possible!

6-Time Grammy® Nominated DIXIE DREGS Launch U.S Tour This Spring with Original Band Lineup for the First Time in 40 Years

What happens when an unconventional band of critically acclaimed musical virtuosos reunite to perform a tour with their original band line-up for the first time in 40 years? Their fans line up for tickets to see them play.

Fans of the The Dixie Dregs (aka The Dregs), are responding positively to the Dawn of The Dregs Tour, which begins in Clearwater, Florida on February 28 and continues with shows on the East and West Coasts through April of 2018.

Since a video announcement about the tour, posted on social media in July by Dreg's drummer Rod Morgenstein, Dregs fans from around the world have responded with enthusiasm. A date at Atlanta's Center Stage sold out in a matter of hours, and the other shows currently on sale are tracking to sell out in advance of their dates as word spreads about the tour.

"We knew there was still an audience for the band, but the degree to which they have responded has been overwhelming," said Dregs bassist, Andy West. "A fan from Canada posted on our Facebook page that he has tickets for at least four shows, and may get tickets for other shows as well," adds West. That's how strongly Dregs fans are reacting to news about the band's reunion.

Reuniting the original members of the band after 40 years is a story within itself. Andy West continued to create music and play in several solo projects, but his daytime job for most of those years was as Technology VP for a high-level software company in Arizona. Violinist, Allen Sloan went back to school, became a practicing anesthesiologist in North Carolina. Keyboardist Steve Davidowski continued to make a living from music as a session player in Nashville, and currently plays with various bands near his home in North Carolina.

Original Dregs drummer Rod Morgenstein maintains his position as the original drummer of the multi-platinum selling '80's band Winger, is a member of the band Jelly Jam with Ty Tabor (King's X) and John Myung (Dream Theater), and is also finishing his twentieth year as a much sought-after Professor of Percussion at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

For guitar aficionados, Dregs co-founder and chief composer, Steve Morse needs no introduction, and his place in the pantheon of guitar greats is certain. Although his gig for more than 20 years has been as guitarist for Deep Purple, his career started with the Dixie Dregs.

The band traces its true beginnings to the band Dixie Grit, which started in a Georgia high school with Steve on guitar and Andy West on bass. Dixie Grit morphed into the Dixie Dregs at the University of Miami School of Music, where Allen Sloan (violin) and Rod Morgenstein joined up with Steve and Andy, who were the "dregs" of Dixie Grit.

The members of the Dixie Dregs remained committed to attending the University of Miami School of Music, which hosted a lively and talented musical community during their tenure, including future greats Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, T Lavitz, and Bruce Hornsby, among many others. In 1975, the group's demo album, The Great Spectacular, was recorded at the University of Miami and then re- released on CD in 1997.

After graduation, the band moved back to Augusta where Steve Davidowski (keyboards) completed the band that would eventually emerge and become known simply as The Dregs. The band paid its dues and honed its skills playing in bars and venues throughout the South in the mid-70's. They established themselves in the firmament of American instrumental music, seamlessly fusing rock with progressive and jazz elements to create a uniquely instrumental-driven style that has stood the test of time.

Based on a short demo and a tip from former Allman Brothers keyboardist Chuck Leavell along with legendary Allman/Dregs tour manager Twiggs Lyndon, Capricorn Records signed the Dixie Dregs to record Free Fall (1977). The success and critical acclaim of Free Fall announced the Dixie Dregs to the world, and after its release, they would become a cult favorite band that would have a lasting influence on much of modern rock.

Glory in the Territory - Leftover Salmon's first appearance at The Haw River Ballroom

It's amazing what happens when you add percussion, electricity, and a dash of Cajun flavor to Bluegrass. The Triangle, home of the IBMA's, has no shortage of great Bluegrass. Lockn' Festival 2017

A picture of a Lockn' Festival poster signed by many of the artists
The Lockn Festival is still evolving as it moved into it's fifth year but continues to deliver one of the strongest lineups of the Summer. This year we were treated to artists including, John Fogerty, Ann Wilson with Govt' Mule, Phil Lesh and The Terrapin Family Band, with Bob Weir and Nicki Bluhm, The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, Jim James, Keller Williams, Blackberry Smoke, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Eric Krasno, Brandi Carlile, Jorma Kaukonen, plus so many more

Five years in, Lockn' Festival continues to morph as an organic growth. Finding life at Infinity Downs Farm (Arrington, VA), Lockn's spirit is one that stems from the western Virginia communities that have shaped its evolution (under the guidance of Peter Shapiro and Dave Frey), as well as being guided by the necessities of balance between growth and finding that infrastructure sweet spot of high attendance paired with available resources. This all has to be factored in, while ensuring that all attendees have access to the stages and camping, within reasonable walking distance.

Dates include support slots for Cris Jacobs Band, American Aquarium and Reckless Kelly.

Fresh off of their critically acclaimed debut release, Keys To The House, Richmond, VA's The Trongone Band will embark on a fall tour in support of the LP. The band will join American Aquarium, Cris Jacobs and Reckless Kelly for North and Southeastern dates through November.

And the press cheers!

"There's nothing I can say more than when you hear this album, you're going to enjoy it. It will warm you and lift you up. Which is critical at a time when most music is instantly disposable and forgettable. And as a debut, THE TRONGONE BAND has delivered a strong first statement." - Popdose

"Keys to the House is rife with Americana themes about lost love, small towns, big dreams and wanderlust. THE TRONGONE BAND conjures up imagery of boxcar drifters, rolling hills and dirt roads that are easy to close your eyes and get lost in." - Music Fest News

"THE TRONGONE BAND make music that is at once reminiscent of that great classic southern-blues-boogie sound they grew up with as it is forward-thinking and blazing new musical trails for others to follow. Their music is quite simply Southern-Rock Soul."  - An Honest Tune

"The guys just released their brand new album Keys To The House, along with some tour dates down South that reflects their down home charm, beautiful hair, and Southern hospitality that is reflected eloquently in their music, and their ability to showcase all their talents cohesively on stage along with their penchant for sometimes playing barefoot that shows how down to earth and right at home they are." - Music Box Pete
