Burlington, VT-based high performance rock and roll act RAQ announces initial spring tour dates for 2008, in support of the band's latest album, "RAQ Live Vol. 2." The album was recorded live at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC on Halloween 2007 and released on New Years Eve in Knoxville, TN. Highlights of the tour include a much anticipated return to New York City—where the band has repeatedly sold out venues such as the Highline Ballroom, Bowery Ballroom and BB King's Blues Club—for a two night run at the Blender Theatre at Gramercy, during the Green Apple Music Festival. The Pnuma Trio will be supporting RAQ for both nights. The tour also features stops at the Langerado Music Festival, The State Theater (Falls Church), Visulite Theatre (Charlotte) and many more dates this spring throughout the east coast.
raqv2This young, groundbreaking band has been going strong since its 2001 inception. With a unique sound that marries a high level of technical skill, well-written songs and a seemingly telepathic connection between players, RAQ's music features complex song structure coupled with quirky-yet-accessible lyrics and a healthy dose of full-band improvisation, delivering an indescribable magic to their allegiant fans nationwide that sets a RAQ live performance apart from any other band out there right now. In the tradition of great jam/rock bands such as Van Halen or Zappa, RAQ uses their tight compositions and lyrical prowess as a launch pad on which to take each song to a higher level, an unplanned adventure into uncharted musical territory.

RAQ has played to their hordes of fans at festivals such as Bonnaroo, The Echo Project, High Sierra Music Festival, Langerado, Berkshire Mountain Music Festival, Summer Camp, Gathering of the Vibes, Adirondack Music Festival, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Jam Cruise. RAQ's very own festival the Lew-Au is going into its third year in the summer of 2008 and will host upwards of 1,000 people for 2 full days and nights.

For RAQ, a live show is all about collaboration and tension-and-release dynamics. Guitarist Chris Michetti's intricate and versatile playing is the driving force behind RAQ's unique sound, while Todd Stoops on keys provides uncompromising rhythm and texture. Jay Burwick holds down the low end with his rock solid bass lines, and Greg Stukey provides an almost scientific backbone of precision on drums.

RAQ is truly an emerging artist that has been on the fast track to success. The band began its life with the name "Shadraq", but shortened the name to RAQ before cutting their debut album Shed Tech in 2001. The band's unique sound developed while playing to ardent fans in local Burlington clubs. They started touring and soon expanded their scope to cover all of New England, eventually making their way to the West Coast in the summer of 2002. In 2006, RAQ released their third and most polished studio album, "Ton These," to wide critical acclaim. In the first weeks of 2008, the band released "RAQ Live Vol. 1," and RAQ Live Vol. 2" two albums that perfectly capture the dizzying live energy of the band's performances.

RAQ is undeniably at the heart of the live music scene across the United States. With each tour, the band gains momentum and skill, literally improving and redefining themselves right in front of concert-goers' eyes and ears. Truly considered an emerging artist, RAQ is the one to watch in 2008 and beyond. For more information on RAQ, all upcoming events, music and more, please visit: RAQmusic.com

Donna Jean & the Tricksters CD

djt.jpg
First some personal background - My first Grateful Dead Show was in July of '72, my first Zen Tricksters Show was, as far as I can recollect, in early 1991. My last Dead Show was in 1990, the Zen Trickster run continues unabated. Over the years I developed a friendship with The Tricksters and was their CD archivist for 8 years starting in 1998. The band would give me the DAT's and I'd decide what would be archived. To this day the band considers me to be their toughest critic. I experienced my share of off nights with the Good Old Grateful Dead and I call them as I hear them. My perspective is from the audience's side of the stage, with this as background let me share my thoughts/feelings on the new Donna Jean & the Tricksters release.
Colorado based not-for-profit Conscious Alliance continues its mission to help feed America’s hungry communities, hosting food drives at various music events this winter/spring. Look for Conscious Alliance at the Langerado Music Festival at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation in Florida on March 6th -9th , along STS9 and EOTO Winter Tours, and at select one-off concert events including Keller Williams and The WMD’S on February 2nd at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado and New Monsoon (featuring Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth and EOTO with special guest Michael Kang) on February 9th at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA. As always, patrons can donate 10 non-perishable food items or $10.00 to receive a limited edition rock art poster.
For this trip, Conscious Alliance will host their second Student Service Learning Project. The program offers exciting alternative service-learning experiences for college students during their fall/spring breaks. The Student Service Learning Project synthesizes service learning by combining education and hands-on service. Participating students learn about hunger related issues, as well as Lakota culture, by providing compassionate cross-cultural community service on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. While on the reservation, students lodge with community leaders Floyd and Natalie Hand, as they sort and distribute food to community members in need, aid with home repairs for Lakota families, participate in educational sessions with Lakota elders, and communicate with Pine Ridge college students and peers about current cultural, social, economic, and environmental issues. This spring, March 23rd - 29th, Conscious Alliance will organize a group of students from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Please visit http://www.consciousalliance.org/projects.yah.htm for more information.

Conscious Alliance started off the 2008 by partnering with Jam Cruise to host a school supplies drive to benefit children living in Roatan, Honduras, one of the stops along Jam Cruise 6. Conscious Alliance, Jam Cruise, Pangea Organics, The Children's Fund of Roatan and Zero Hero teamed up to deliver dozens of backpacks and boxes of school supplies, which were collected from passengers when the ship docked at port. Additionally, Pangea Organics donated 1000's of bars of organic soap that were divided between a school, orphanage and clinic on the island. The Children's Fund of Roatan shared their history to a group of 40 Jam Cruise volunteers, and children at the orphanage received an acoustic performance by Jam Cruise musicians including Jon Fishman (Phish), Jamie Janover (Zilla), Jeff Coffin (Flecktones), Dave Watts (The Motet) and Dan Lebowitz (Animal Liberation Orchestra).

For Conscious Alliance, the 2008 winter/spring season comes on the heels of a hugely successful 4th annual Turkey n' Trimmings holiday fundraiser. As a result of a generous outpouring of donations, Conscious Alliance was able to deliver nearly 2,000 holiday dinners- three times the amount delivered in 2006! Deliveries were made to communities on Pine Ridge, Northern Cheyenne, Rosebud, Standing Rock, and Fort Peck Indian Reservations. In addition, the 4th annual Toy Drive received a huge boost this year thanks to a donation from JAKKS Pacific. The contribution landed the total number of toys donated at nearly 10,000, resulting in distribution to dozens of communities on Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Northern Cheyenne and Fort Peck Indian Reservations. Instead of wrapping paper, toys were given out in pillowcases sewn by quilting groups across the Midwest, thus eliminating excess waste.

Please visit ConsciousAlliance.org for more information on the important work of Conscious Alliance.

The Afromotive - Scare Tactics CD

Asheville has a glorious 9-piece afrobeat ensemble and this is their incredible debut. Led by Ivory Coast's Kevin Meyame, the dancer, djembe player and percussionist also sings in French, English and his native language of Baoul.

Mike Doughty - 01.28.08 - The Pour House, Raleigh, NC

Mike Doughty - 01.28.08 - The Pour House, Raleigh, NC
Judging from the crowd at Raleigh, NC's Pour House Music Hall, Mike Doughty is still quite the revered alt-rock figure. Ten years removed from the heyday of Soul Coughing, it's becoming clearer to me that Doughty's verbose psuedo-rap rants and stylish songwriting were more than the crux of the band's short-lived success - they were the band's lifeblood. With his solo jaunts, Doughty has created a more direct line of communication between he and his fans. Over the past 8 years, the shows have become notorius for spirited conversations between performer and audience, plus borderline stand-up comedy from Mike at times.

Anonymous - Meet Anonymous CD

Hailing from the growing central North Carolina town of Burlington, Anonymous is a young band that has encapsulated the first part of their evolution in their second album, Meet Anonymous.
The signature concert series of PBS takes a trip outside Austin’s city limits this February with a special presentation of a unique San Francisco music festival. Co-produced by KQED Public Television and LickonaVision, producers of Austin City Limits, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is a one-hour production that captures the music, spirit and community of this treasured annual event.
The festival celebrates the current resurgence of bluegrass music with fans of all ages. Yet as its name suggests, the festival includes music and performers that go far beyond bluegrass. Every summer since 2001, the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, which is free to the public, draws hundreds of thousands of music-lovers to the meadows of San Francisco's Golden Gate Park to hear music that includes traditional bluegrass, alternative country, and many performers who cross the standard genre lines. The 2007 festival drew an estimated 500,000 fans.

Shot entirely in high definition, the production features 20 acts on multiple stages, from musical legends to a whole new generation of bluegrass performers and more. Earl Scruggs' "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," of Bonnie and Clyde fame, opens the show and is followed by Doc Watson, the renowned guitar player from North Carolina. Highlights of the production also include the innovative banjo styling of Bela Fleck, the infectious singing of Ricky Skaggs and Bruce Hornsby, and the searing vocals of Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris.

(Woodstock, NY) - Radio Woodstock and acclaimed guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead) have once again teamed up to bring the fourth annual Mountain Jam Music Festival (www.mountainjam.com) to New York’s Hunter Mountain from Friday, May 30th-Sunday, June 1st.
MOUNTAIN JAM TO RETURN TO HUNTER, NY MAY 30-JUNE 1

GOV'T MULE TO HEADLINE FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR

LEGENDARY BAND DRUMMER LEVON HELM TO MAKE RARE FESTIVAL APPEARANCE

For the fourth year in a row, Gov't Mule will anchor the weekend-long event with a pair of two-set performances. Mountain Jam will also feature a rare festival appearance by Levon Helm, who will perform material from his Grammy-nominated Dirt Farmer and a selection of The Band's signature songs. Tickets will go on sale Friday, February 1 at 10 am through www.mountainjam.com and www.mule.net

As in years past, Mountain Jam will offer a wide scope of music, including the third appearance by Michael Franti & Spearhead, Citizen Cope, Drive By Truckers, Dark Star Orchestra, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Galactic, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, JJ Grey & Mofro, The Greencards, and Jim Weider.  Medeski, Martin & Wood, who turned in memorable Mountain Jam performances in both 2005 and 2006, will return with jazz legend John Scofield, who made his Mountain Jam debut last spring with Phil Lesh & Friends. The festival will also showcase rising stars like The Felice Brothers, Jackie Greene, Pnuma Trio, and Lotus. More bands will be announced in the near future.

Radio Woodstock's Gary Chetkof said, "This is such a special time for Levon, with his Lifetime Achievement Award and Grammy nomination. It is an honor to have Levon on the bill this year and I know Levon and Warren love jamming together."

Added Haynes, "I personally get involved with Radio Woodstock in the music selection and it is such a breath of fresh air to be involved with people who play music for the right reasons. That is the connection among all the bands we try to book."

The festival's forward thinking Awareness Village will once again host Rock The Earth, a not-for-profit environmental advocacy group, Headcount, which promotes voter registration, and Community Energy, a company committed to increasing the domestic supply of clean, fuel-free energy. The festival pledges to increase its environmental efforts thanks to recycling and post event clean-up provided by Clean Vibes. Mountain Jam will also donate 50 cents per festival ticket sold to HeadCount's Cents For Sense program, which will help register voters for the 2008 presidential election.

Originally conceived as a single-day celebration timed with Radio Woodstock's 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has blossomed into a three-day, multi-stage event, featuring onsite camping, a full Awareness Village, and one of the northeast's most pristine natural amphitheaters. For the first time, Mountain Jam will also host outdoor late night performances by marquee acts like Galactic and the Dark Star Orchestra on both Friday and Saturday nights. These starlit performances will complement the festival's already popular late night offerings by dance bands like Lotus and the Pnuma Trio in the enclosed Hunter Mountain Lodge.

The Hunter Mountain Lodge will provide fans with 24-hour access to both food and indoor bathrooms, while onsite camping and a smorgasbord of nearby hotels and lodges will ensure that all attendees will have a comfortable stay. This year Mountain Jam will also offer an expanded VIP option, featuring a shaded hospitality tent, a variety of food and beverages and, even, full concierge service.

Hunter Mountain is located within a short drive from anywhere in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, and is considered the unofficial kick off to the Northeast festival season. Fans unable to attend will be able to experience the music as well, thanks to the festival's interactive blog and innovative webcast, which drew close to 50,000 viewers in 2007.

Mountain Jam passes will be available at www.mountainjam.com and www.mule.net beginning Friday, February 1 at 10 am. Early Bird tickets for a 3-Day Pass are only $115 or $145, including camping. Prices will increase when the early bird allotments run out. A limited number of single-day passes for Sunday will be made available soon for $75 in advance and $85 the day of show. A limited number of RV passes will also be made available.
