John Brown's Body - Jewish Mother - Virginia Beach - May 17, 2013

John Brown's Body
JBB’s live sound is often a sensory stealing experience (thanks to their dub style), and it’s one I wish I could live through more often.

Before getting into a review of this concert, it’s worth sidetracking and noting that eastern Virginia’s Jason Bruner (QuiVa Productions) has been booking concerts in the area for 13 solid years. This is a company that continues to bring the best jambands/blues/reggae/jamgrass/more to the region’s ears, and tonight’s John Brown’s Body performance was no different. This region has found a bedrock in QuiVa Productions’ efforts, and the scene wouldn’t be the same without it.

John Brown's Body - Kings and Queens CD
Ever the innovators in the reggae genre, John Brown’s Body continues in their tradition of reshaping a form that could easily stagnate and cycle back on old styles.
Live showcase at Martin's Downtown in Roanoke, VA.

Since their beginnings well over a decade ago, Mac & Juice have made tremendous evolutionary strides from their days as a dynamic acoustic duo. Now performing as a Quartet, their vast stylistic range is seamlessly translated into every original song. The band personally describes this as "A melting pot of musical influence crafted into sweet sweet Rock & Roll." Whether listening to their album or experienced live, the end result is a sound all its own that lends itself to a very broad range of listeners.

MARTIN'S DOWNTOWN (HGMN 2012 Venue of the Year)

The Floorboards are an Appalachian Roots Rock Ensemble hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

The band marries rock & roll and country roots with the sights and sounds of southern mountain towns. Jake and George shake the leaves from the trees. Bob wails like a steam whistle cutting through the pines. Patrick coaxes stringed cries from the hills and hollers. Matt tells the story. In their first year as a band, The Floorboards quickly have become a staple in Southwest VA and are branching out with purpose. Having co-billed with bands such as Trampled by Turtles and performed at venues and festivals in the southeast along side Drive by Truckers, Jackson Brown, Matisyahu, Allison Krause and Union Station, and many others, the band is picking up steam like the 207.

A refreshing harvest of a band from the fertile Front Range of Colorado.

Grant Farm is a band on a mission. Tyler, Chris, Adrian and Sean are experienced players of renown in their own right, but as a unit they form a greater whole, and are working hard to grow into the best band that they can be. Former members of Leftover Salmon, The Drew Emmitt Band, Emmitt-Nershi Band, Snake Oil Medicine Show, Bill Nershi’s Blue Planet and Hot Soup, these fine young players have been featured on stage with the likes of The String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, The Infamous Stringdusters, The Motet, Head For The Hills, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Tim O’Brien, Dumpstaphunk, Tony Rice, Larry Keel, Keller Williams, Jon Oates, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Disco Biscuits, Abigail Washburn and Peter Rowan.

The seeds of Grant Farm were planted in 2009 by Tyler Grant and Andy Thorn. Tyler was fresh off the boat from Nashville, TN and Andy from Chapel Hill, NC. The duo found themselves in Boulder, CO as members of The Emmitt-Nershi Band, and were eager to showcase some of their original music. When Tyler gave his notice to ENB at the end of 2010 he was driven to make a bigger statement with his music so he dusted off his Telecaster, started a conversation with the experienced and equally driven drummer Chris Misner, plugged in, turned up, and watched the sprouts of the Grant Farm concept grow.

With the help of Thorn and stellar bassist Keith Moseley of The String Cheese Incident, the electric Grant Farm started rehearsing in early 2011. Their concerts in Denver, Boulder and the mountains beyond caused a ripple in the local music scene that led to some fine festival plays the following Summer, including Yarmonygrass, Four Corners Folk Festival, Fort Collins Bark n’ Bluegrass, Riverfront, and Harvestival. With a country-disco (Cris-Co), roots-rock, booty-shakin’ jam-tastic concept fully formed, Adrian Engfer and Sean Foley were brought on board to bring the band into 2012.

Lead by National Flatpicking Champion Tyler Grant, the talented four-piece is built on the foundation of love, family and the joy of music. The Grant Farm train stops at all stations on the North American roots music line, and is not afraid to let the whistle scream with some blistering jams. After a couple solid seasons of touring Coast-to-Coast behind their eponymous debut CD, Grant Farm (Grant Central Records, 2012) audiences everywhere are a-buzz with the Roots, Rock and Cris-Co statement that Grant Farm brings to every performance.
