Circles Around the Sun in Raleigh, NC May 7, 2019

CATS scratched Raleigh's itch for soaring improvisational psychedelia with a spiritual bellyrub at the Lincoln Theatre

Circles Around the Sun was formed of sonic stardust from the big bang of the Grateful Dead's 2015 "Fare Thee Well", a series of shows that were equal parts reunion, redemption and revelation. First created to compose intermission music, the circle rolled downhill of its own accord, and quickly snowballed into its own force of nature. Like Pinocchio's sunshine daydream, they believed hard enough to turn into a real band. Their second album, 2018's

Cris Jacobs Band w/Laura Reed - Raleigh, NC 05.10.2019

Jacobs & Reed both brought forth excellent bands for a night of great music.

Laura Reed and her band (complete with horn section) kicked off the evening with a set of soulful R&B with a good bit of blues and funk flavors throughout. She's got an incredible voice and also plays a custom ukulele and a mean harmonica. She invited out a guest guitar shredder, Emily Musolino (formerly of Dark Water Rising), to crank the rock up to 11.

Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance

One of the most bucolic settings to see music in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area is at The Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance, which has been happening every spring and fall, on a 75-acre farm in Pittsboro, NC, since 2003.

The festival has on-site camping, food and craft vending, and is very family-friendly. There are lots of activities designed for children, the grounds are very clean and forested, and it's generally a much more relaxing and peaceful experience than larger festivals. It's also held at the best time of the year, before the summer heat sets in, whereas the larger festivals always seem to pick the hottest week in July, on land with not a tree in sight, which never makes sense to me.
