WITH S2 UMPHREY'S MCGEE CONTINUES TO LEAD THE INDUSTRY
IN INNOVATIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCES

Umphrey's McGee has never played by the rules. Now, with the unvieling of their all- new Stew Art Series (aka, "S2") - an interactive fan experience where audience members "conduct" the band's live improvisations  - Umphrey's McGee continue to offer their fiercely loyal fanbase the most innovative musical experiences available.

Umphrey’s McGee’s S2 debuted on October 3rd in Milwaukee – with another S2 event recently announced for October 24th in Portland and additional date(s) this fall and beyond still to be determined.  Hosted as individual events before that evening’s already schedule show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage will be entirely directed by S2 audience members. Check out this S2 video from the first event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYJn64XRGXU

The inaugural S2 at Milwaukee's Eagles Ballroom was received with overwhelming enthusiasm and to rave reviews. The sold-out crowd of 50 fans submitted their ideas by texting descriptive words, phrases, and pop culture references (pretty much whatever came to mind), to the Umphrey's Mozes mobile interface.  The suggestions were then filtered by the band's long time Sound Caresser Kevin Browning and projected on a screen for the band to digest and turn into the next phase of the jam.  The band's music varied stylistically with suggestions ranging from "an afternoon bus ride in Jamaica" to "drinking pina coladas...in a hurricane". As one elated fan commented after the show, "S2 was the coolest thing I have ever been a part of. It's always been a dream of mine to meet the band, and the opportunity to participate in leading the Jam for the band was a dream come true as well."

As highly skilled improvisational musicians known for using a complex set of signals on stage to prompt spontaneous musical changes, S2 is proving to keep the band on their toes as they navigate through the audience’s prompts. S2 events also include a Q&A session providing an opportunity for fans to ask about what they’re witnessing (or ask anything else for that matter). As part of the ticket (which will actually be a custom laminate that will be different for each S2 event), every attendee will receive an autographed CD of the Stew Art Series they attend - minutes after the event has concluded. To be clear, each S2 show is a TOTALLY separate event than the scheduled concert date and will be sold as a separate ticket - getting a ticket to S2 does not get you into the show later that night (and vice versa). The S2 experiment is just that, an experiment. Keyboardist Joel Cummins explains, “The improvisational elements of our show have always been one of our favorite parts about playing together - and we think the audience feels that way, too. That’s our inspiration for the S2 series. It’s also a great way to stay on top of our chops.” S2 events take place in the early evening before the respective show start times. Prices and ages vary from show to show - which should last one hour (with Q&A).

This is not the first time that Umphrey's McGee has taken new approaches to delivering their music to the fans. Before their latest studio recording, Mantis, was released in January of this year, the group made the album available for pre-order in an interesting way. Fans were offered more free bonus content the more Mantis pre-orders were received; as the fans "unlocked" levels of content by getting more of their friends to pre-order the album. The idea was to give the fans incentive to help spread the word about the album, and to offer a totally unique music experience.

But it's always been about experiencing Umphrey's McGee on the concert stage, and the group recently announced a string of fall dates, including some final festival stops of 2009 - Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival, moe.Down, and Telluride Blues and Brews, plus a special Halloween performance in Yosemite, California. And to get yourself in the right frame of mind for the upcoming tour, you can check out the recently-released live DVD, Umphrey's McGee - Live. Recorded during their 2007 performance for PBS's Soundstage, Umphrey's McGee - Live is offers an incredible 13-song set on DVD, including six favorites not shown during the PBS broadcast, which premiered last February.

2009 has been one of Umphrey's McGee's busiest years yet, and as evidenced by their upcoming tour and one of a kind S2 shows, they refuse to slow down. The band's complete list of confirmed appearances is as follows:

SCARENDIPITY BASH 2009
Atlanta, GA
Mammoth Trick Or Treat Box Set and Slim two-disc set released on October 27, 2009.

Also available now: New solo releases by SCI members Kyle Hollingsworth's Then There's Now and Emmit-Nershi Band's New Country Blues.

sciWith the one-time constant touring machine otherwise known as The String Cheese Incident slowing their schedule considerably in recent years, fans get a chance to relive the group's legendary "Hulaween" shows on the forthcoming live release, Trick or Treat. The two-disc release - set to hit on October 27, 2009 on CD, vinyl, and digitally - is culled from several of these epic shows by The String Cheese Incident.   An expanded 9-disc deluxe box set edition of Trick or Treat  will also be available in very limited quantity.  Pre-sale  on the deluxe box set begins September 23, 2009 at 12:00 PM EDT - with the first 200 who pre-order set to receive a Trick or Treat cover art poster signed by members of SCI, and the first 500 who order being automatically entered to win one of 30 uncut Trick or Treat poster sheets, featuring the Michael Everett cover art poster sheet, plus all 7 mini-posters from the box set.  (These exclusive uncut sheets will also be signed by the members of SCI!)

Known to perform special concerts comprised heavily of cover tunes each Halloween, Trick or Treat offers selections from SCI performances recorded at Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998), Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999), Portland's State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium (2002), Sin City's Cox Pavillion (2003), and Madison's Exhibition Center at Alliant Energy Center.

The 9-disc limited edition box set of Trick or Treat includes seven complete sets - featuring must-hear renditions of Beatles ("Come Together"), Beastie Boys ("No Sleep Till Brooklyn"), Grateful Dead ("Shakedown Street"), KC & The Sunshine Band ("Get Down Tonight"), and Phish ("The Wedge") classics, among many others. The Trick or Treat deluxe box set also features signed & numbered original artwork from Michael Everett, special commemorative mini-posters from the Hulaween shows, personalized liner notes from the band, a photo booklet by famed rock photographer C. Taylor Crothers, and plenty of special surprises.

Formed in Colorado during 1993, The String Cheese Incident has long been considered one of the leaders of the thriving "jam band" scene. Comprised of members Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin), Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and Jason Hann (percussion, joined SCI in 2004), the group performed regularly between 1993-2007. And in the process, they built a large fanbase on the strength of their live show, as well as such classic releases as Outside Inside, Untying the Not, and One Step Closer.

In recent years, the band members have focused on solo projects, although The String Cheese Incident did reunite onstage this year for a show-stopping performance at the ROTHBURY Festival. Now, here's your chance to experience The String Cheese Incident in all their in-concert glory time and time again, with Trick or Treat.

Also this fall, String Cheese Incident members Kyle Hollingsworth and Billy Nershi release a couple of solo works.  Look for Emmitt-Nershi Band's New Country Blues and Hollingsworth's Then There's Now, in stores now.

The band is set to begin a huge fall tour, including a "Pay-What-You-Want" Western state run.

Look for Lotus to release a pair of EP's on October 6: Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass

Today Lotus announce a New Year's eve run in Pennsylvania that will culminate with an epic New Year's Eve Show with MSTRKRFT at Philadelphia's Electric Factory. Leading up to the big night, the band will stop at Mr. Smalls Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) on 12/29 and The Note (West Chester, PA) on 12/30, both with support act Tigersapien.

The New Year's Eve announcement comes as Lotus prepare to hit the road for a full season of touring.  Along their Fall Tour, Lotus will break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior - they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour featuring Lotus is an eight night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band's two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.

The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus' larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver's Fillmore, NYC's Terminal 5 (w/ support acts RJD2 and Junior Boys DJ set), Baltimore's Sonar, Chicago's Vic Theatre, the Electric Factory in Philly for New Year's Eve and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science feat Adam Dietch, The Egg (from London, UK), Big in Japan, Big Gigantic, RJD2, Junior Boys, and more. Don't miss a few special small shows: here's the scoop - the Denver Fillmore show is being bundled with the Quixote's show (to get into Quixotes, you must buy the Fillmore ticket), and also, for New Years, Lotus presents another "bundled" show at The Note in West Chester, PA (to purchase a ticket for The Note, you must purchase a bundled Electric Factory ticket).

Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the two Denver shows, both Boston shows and the New Year's run .  The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus' 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn't find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn't been finished by deadlines or they weren't coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding tempos.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country.

rre

It's no surprise that the band Railroad Earth took their name from Jack Kerouac's flowing prose-poem, October in the Railroad Earth. Interspersed with memories of the past and the present, the story weaves a complex tapestry of impressions and reflections, all underlining the American history of the workingman. Much like Kerouac, Railroad Earth's music captures the grit and soul of rural and urban America and translates it into something deeper than just music.

The six-piece ensemble crafts each song artfully, like a storyline in a novel about travel, wonderment, tragedy, and heartbreak. With the unusually soulful and deep writing and vocal delivery of principal songwriter, Todd Sheaffer, combined with instrumentation so colorful you might find them on the Appalachian Trail, Railroad Earth is bringing their slice of American culture on a hefty fall/winter tour spanning both coasts and every major market in between.

Mixing an unlikely blend of instruments to make up their well-traveled sound, the project features Todd Sheaffer (Lead vocals, acoustic guitars), Tim Carbone (Violin, vocals), John Skehan (Mandolin, vocals), Andy Goessling (Acoustic guitars, banjo, dobro, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, saxophones and vocals), Carey Harmon (Drums, hand percussion, vocals) and Johnny Grubb (Upright bass).

In their relatively short tenure, the band has released five critically acclaimed albums and amassed an impressive national following with sold-out shows from coast-to-coast. They've also graced the main stages of some of the country's most prestigious festivals, including; Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rothbury and the 10,000 Lakes Festival. And this past September, Railroad Earth performed for the first time at the legendary amphitheater, Red Rocks, in Morrison, CO. Yet, Railroad Earth remains surprisingly grounded and continues to stick close to their musical roots and influences - always striving to keep the next show is as inspired as the last.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country. But unlike the speed trains in Kerouac's novels, this Railroad Earth is in no hurry "to get there fast".

The complete artist lineup can be found online at www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com.

Thursday night's pre-festival kick-off party starts the vibe off right Nov. 12 featuring full sets from Toubab Krewe, Pnuma Live PA, Pimps of Joytime, The Heavy Pets, Brother Bean & Gravity A. Admission for Thursday night's show is $40 and includes music, primitive camping and is only available to weekend festival ticket buyers. In addition to live music, 12 talented painters will create live art during the musical performances, providing their own artistic interpretations of their experience while on stage. These original paintings will be displayed and sold in the Bear Creek Art Tent.

VIP packages offer a more upscale festival experience including access to all music performances, primitive camping Friday through Sunday, exclusive access to the VIP area, reduced price beverages, and three meals (Friday lunch; Saturday lunch; and Sunday lunch).  VIP Ticket prices start at $275 until Oct. 1 and are available online at www.bearcreekmusicfestival.com or by calling the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park Office at 386-364-1683.

The Park Office can also process requests to upgrade already purchased weekend tickets to VIP Tickets.  Beark Creek Music Festival advanced weekend tickets are available now online for the early pricing of $125 through Oct. 1 and includes all music performances and primitive camping Friday through Sunday. There is no charge for children 12 and under with a paid adult weekend ticket.

Continuing its commitment to community in a variety of displays, Bear Creek once again presents its 'Green Program' - the festival's pursuit for environmental improvement with a pledge to use more biodegradable materials, exhibit water conservation policies, habitat protection efforts, increase recycling and more throughout the park's environmentally-friendly facility.

Bear Creek also hosts a weekend-long food drive in support of The Food Bank of Suwannee Valley by asking all festival patrons to bring a donation of canned goods and non-perishable food items to one of the Festival's many receptacle barrels located at the main gate and throughout the venue. In addition, the festival is hosting the second annual Bear Creek Feed the Hungry Disc Golf Tournament happening on the Music Park's 18-hole disc golf course. Its mission is to raise funds for the Food Bank of Suwannee Valley; yet this fun, casual and charitable disc golf tournament during the festival raised hundreds of dollars as well as hundreds of pounds of food during the 2008 event. Tournament schedule & sign-up details are available online.

Conveniently located between Jacksonville and Tallahassee, the Bear Creek Music Festival is located just minutes off of I-75 in Northern Florida at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida.

Chris Barron (front man for the Spin Doctors) recently returned from a trip to the Middle East where he performed for U.S. troops. I sat down with Barron before a solo show in Schenectady, NY to discuss the trip, his future plans with the Spin Doctors, and his newly launched solo career.

Interview by: Tom Miller

HGMN: You've been nominated for a Grammy, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, performed on Saturday Night Live, and shared the stage with the Rolling Stones. Where does your recent trip to Iraq to play for U.S. troops fall on your list of accomplishments?

CB:  You know, people get into music for a lot of reasons and a lot of those reasons are selfish. You want to be rich or you want to be famous or you want to "get the girl". But I think most people that play music want to make other people happy, and there's an impulse to go where people really need you the most, where people really need to be made happy. I don't ever remember playing for a crowd of people that were more... you know, they're lonely over there and they're in a very alien environment. There's hostility going on everywhere and the place itself is hostile. It's like 115 degrees out everyday and the sand is like this talcum powder, so if there's any wind at all the air fills up with this yellow sand that you're always breathing in. You have to walk around with a rag across your mouth. I mean, everybody knows you can die in the desert, but being there and thinking, "if you take all these buildings away, take this water away, take away these people that are guiding me from place to place, I'd be dead in like 12 hours". I'd at least be unconscious with buzzards picking at my bones. So, I've never been good at hierarchies, like "this is number one and this is number two", but for me there's a threshold and when things go beyond that threshold, it's an amazing experience. You know, like meeting Keith Richards was one of the most amazing things that happened to me. Appearing on Saturday Night Live was amazing, being on the cover of Rolling Stone was amazing. I'm doing this show tonight for WEQX and it was on this station that I first heard one of my songs being played on the radio. That was amazing!

HGMN: What song was it?

CB: Two Princes. Yeah, so this experience is up there with any of those. It was a really amazing experience. And it's not like "I'm so glad or so proud I did it". It's more like, "this is the least I can do".

HGMN: Was this something you've wanted to do or were you approached by someone?

CB: Actually, our record label sent another band over, Cowboy Mouth. So when I heard they were going over, I wanted to know how I could go, too.

HGMN: How many people did you play for at each show? Was it hundreds, thousands?

CB: No, not thousands, it was like hundreds or less. Some shows had more than others. This one place we played in Baghdad was like an R and R area. And the troops are always moving, they come and go, and the night before we got there we heard the place was full. But then when we got there they all had to go and do like "war stuff" so there was nobody there. We had been convoyed in by a detail of soldiers so we basically ended up playing for them that night plus like six other people. There were other gigs though where we played for several hundred people.

HGMN: Did you play indoors or outdoors?

CB: Both, some gigs were outdoors and others were indoors.

HGMN: Besides the hostile physical environment you mentioned, did everything else go off without any problems?

CB: Yeah, it was really great. The soldiers are so appreciative. I'll never play for a more appreciative audience. It's not like they're foaming at the mouth and going nuts during the gig. They're generally pretty reserved and clap after the songs, but they're just very much into it. Like after the show we'd do a "meet and greet" and the first night they were like, "you know a lot of people are probably going to line up to meet you guys". And we were giving out CD's and some posters that we were signing, stuff like that. So they asked us how long we were willing to hang out and sign and I'm like, "Ahhh, 'til everyone who wants to meet us or wants a CD or signature, gets one." So they would sit there and be pretty reserved during the show but afterward everyone of them would line up to meet us. And they would wait.  We would hang out and talk and take pictures or sign autographs, but they would hang out for like an hour and a half. They wouldn't go away. They just waited on line and an hour and a half later there would still be a little line and they would just wait to meet us and get a signature or whatever. It was really cool, very special.

HGMN: Were you ever worried about your safety?

CB: No. We were never in any danger what so ever. I really want to stress that. We didn't do anything heroic at all. My family was worried about me and I reassured them over and over again that everything was fine. Honestly, I'm not in the business of putting myself in danger (laughing). That's just not for me. I was never in any danger. The soldiers over there are the true heroes. They are putting themselves in harm's way and they're to be admired for that.

HGMN:
Do you think you might draw inspiration from this experience to write a song?

CB: Um, well I am writing about it. Not a song but I am writing a blog about it. You know, I never know what might become a song. Sometimes momentous things don't make very good songs. It's kind of like the good stuff doesn't make a good story. So I don't know if I'll write a song about it, but like I said I am writing about my experiences there. I'm trying to go to a lot more interesting places and meet more interesting people. I'm trying to be more disciplined about writing this stuff down and I think I would eventually like to do some kind of a book, like a travel log. I've never really seen myself as a prose writer. I kind of think I suck at it but I'm actually pretty good at it. When I sit down and write these accounts of things, I um... well for example, there were things that happened over there (Iraq) that I thought I would never be able to describe or put into words, but I've sat down and made myself do it and it somehow comes out OK. Somehow I manage to get the vibe of what was going on. So I'll tell ya, I don't know if any songs will come out of it. I'm going to write the experience down and you know... it really changed me personally. When I got home, first of all I don't know how these guys adjust when they get home. I don't know how they do it. I was dreaming about barbed-wire and guns and concrete barriers for days after I got back. I was walking in the streets and I was amazed by something simple like our law and order. Law and order is not the order of the day in that world. Our system, the United States, is a country or a system that is certainly flawed. Our system is by no means perfect as far as everyone not getting the same deal as everyone else. But, it's a lot better... so much better than like, Iraq for example. Comparatively, here in the U.S., people get a pretty fair shake and for the most part there's law and order. People aren't just running around killing each other. So I've just been feeling very lucky since I got back. It put a lot into perspective. We all have our problems, you know, and they're real problems. But in comparison, when put into perspective, a lot of our problems are petty. There are much bigger problems in this world.

HGMN: Getting away from Iraq now, I'd like to know what you see in your future and if it includes the Spin Doctors?

CB: Oh, yeah. I always think of the Spin Doctors like a Ferrari. You know, you have this Ferrari in your garage and just because you don't drive it to work everyday doesn't mean you're going to take a sledge hammer to it. I love those guys. We have this love/hate sort of thing. I been places, done things with those guys. We share this collective experience that no one else was able to share with us. We did a lot of amazing things and everything I have now, I owe to those guys. I owe them my success. Well, I guess we helped each other. The reason I'm playing for this room full of people tonight is in part due to the success I had with those guys. We're still doing some gigs and stuff, putting food on the table, and that may extend into making another record. I really don't know. But there's certainly no plan to break up the band or anything like that.

HGMN: One last follow question to that. You've been through a lot of ups and downs; your well publicized health issues, chemistry issues with the Spin Doctors, etc. Are you happy where you're at right now? Are you at peace?

CB:
Yeah, I'm having a really good time. I really enjoy doing this solo thing. It's a really cool vehicle for my song writing. I really enjoyed doing Pancho and the Kid, I've been writing a lot with the Time Bandits and I've been writing on my own. I'm really looking forward to making another record. I'm really just trying to get the word out and I'd like to keep doing this but on a larger scale. Obviously, I'd love to be filling stadiums some day but I really just feel like I'm starting out as a solo artist. I'm just learning now, how to play the electric guitar. I've always played an acoustic and now I'm learning a lot more about music by learning the electric guitar 'cause it's so much more unforgiving, so much more precise. So what I'm trying to say is that I'm really enjoying myself but I'll never know everything I want to know about music. I'm really enjoying going out on my own. Like, when you're in a band for 20 years, there's stuff you automatically fall back on. Certain patterns, guys playing or acting a certain way, stuff like that. It's sort of this big safety net. On my own, there's a much smaller safety net. I'm just out there, working with the crowd. There's nobody to hide behind, it's just me. I'm really enjoying that, I like the higher standard I'm being held to. So I am happy but I want to keep growing and keep writing. I'm really hungry for tomorrow.

HGMN: Thank you, Chris.
