Lockn' Music Festival's symbol of almost interlocking rings suggests eternity. And, each year's gathering of many of the world's best musicians seems to bring Lockn' closer to joining those rings and creating the everlasting.
At Lockn' 2019 in Arrington, Virginia, music filled the hills and valleys while individual spirits were revived, personal cultures were developed and honed, and healing stood as a weapon of choice in a world split between blessing and crisis.

The Big What? was the 8th annual throwdown, revved up, twist yourself sideways summertime dreamtime festival conceived and executed by North Carolina's hometown heroes BIG Something. The Big Where? was the vast expanse of the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center - 75 acres of shady woods and rolling fields in the central Carolina countryside, roomy enough for multiple stages yet cozy enough to call home. The Big When? was three days of perfect sunny weather in early August with a radar reading royally relieved of rain.

It's always something special when a Beatle comes to town! Ringo Starr drummed and danced his way through Durham's Performing Arts Center to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his renowned All-Starr Band. A tidal wave of applause and good cheer washed over the theater as Ringo took the stage flashing his trademark peace sign and a giant grin. The seven-piece masterclass tore through over two hours of massive hits from their own catalogs, Ringo's '70s smashes, and of course plenty of Liverpudlian delights.

It's nearly impossible to over-emphasize the devotion of the band's collective fan bases. Umphrey's McGee has cultivated over the last two decades one of music's most passionate followings with a relentless touring schedule, and impressive studio output. Umphrey's McGee works.... A LOT!!! It stands to reason that they offer their coveted opening slot to Big Something regularly on tour. Big Something has in recent years, worked their way into the conversation as a top-notch group with their relentless touring schedule and studio work as well.

Umphrey's McGee wrecked the Ritz with an earth-shattering assault of sound and lights, a full sensory onslaught of inner ear indulgence and ophthalmologic overload. It says something about the band when all of the analogies are to natural disasters and power tools. Your loyal but overwhelmed reviewers' notes include words such as earthquake, tsunami, avalanche, chainsaw, jackhammer, shellshock, aspirin and hearing exam.
