For 11 years now, Culturefest World Music & Arts Festival has given the people of Southern WV and the surrounding region a destination like no other- a creative oasis, it's been called, on a mountaintop in Pipestem, WV. The event features four stages of music and dance performances representing Appalachian culture mixed into a melting pot of flavors from various regions of the world. Artists converge for a weekend long experience of jam sessions, workshops, inspired conversations and free flowing creative expression. With on-site camping, the festival provides an immersion in the arts and offers opportunities to discover new hobbies, new ideas and new friends. Workshops in drumming, dance, yoga and more offer enrichment and artisan vendors display their handmade fine art and wares. There's a children's village complete with a special stage and full out costume parade throughout the site, and a relaxing inflatable furniture lounge. Night-time at Culturefest features creative lighting, a fire circle and after hours cabaret, making a magical late summer atmosphere. Organizers say this year's Culturefest will offer more interactive experiences throughout the site that will wow and inspire.

David Burhman of WV Sky Tours will offer astronomy demonstrations with his large telescopes. Dakota & Friends, life-like dinosaur puppets, will be roaming the site all weekend. Food vending choices include French crepes, Thai food, authentic homestyle Mexican, ice cream and more. Children's activities include special yoga sessions, art workshops, crafts, an open mic and a colorful costume parade. A series of facilitated discussions called "Conversations at Culturefest" will explore topics such as permaculture, superfoods, the interconnection of living beings and community resilience.

The always stellar performance lineup includes NC rock powerhouse BIG Something, renowned world music explorers Songs of Water, Eclectic Americana ensemble Option 22, The Modern Folk/Soul/Blues music of The Company Stores, the swing/rock sounds of The Judy Chops and the multi-genre dance band The Contrarians, whose set will also feature a caller for folk dances. Featuring members of Bootsy’s Rubberband, Parliament-Funkadelic & Trey Anastasio Band

With organic, bass-centric sounds mixing with forward-looking soundscapes, Everbody's Feelin' Real finds Freekbass bridging the gap between classic funk and the future of the groove. Aided by the vision of producer and engineer Duane Lundy (My Morning Jacket, Ben Sollee), this album lives in the rawness of the earth while traveling to the future of worlds yet to be discovered.

Inspired by the inventiveness and massive sonics of David Bowie, Sly Stone & Dr. Dre the ten-songs on Everbody's Feelin' Real celebrate a sound while simultaneously pushing the envelope of what it is and what it can be. Funk is only a part of it.

Accompanying him on the new release are Les Claypool collaborator Skerik, Jennifer Hartswick from Trey Anastasio Band, Joel "Razor Sharp" Johnson from Bootsy's Rubberband, Kim Manning, Chip Wilson and Big Bamn from George Clinton's Parliament-Funkadelic and percussionist David Farris.

In addition to his recorded works, Freekbass has released three instructional DVDs Learn Funk Bass with Freekbass, Level 1 & Level 2 and 50 Freekbass Licks You Must Know. He also gave a master class at this year’s London Bass Guitar Show while appearing on the cover of Bass Guitar Magazine with a number of great bassists.

“I feel with music it is your duty to release not just albums, but to let other people gain any insight into what got you where you are,” Freekbass says. “Plus I have personally become such a better player since I have started instruction.”

Knowing he has as much to learn as he has to teach, Freekbass has played in a number of different projects with the likes of Bootsy Collins, Phish’s Mike Gordon, DJ Spooky, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell, Kelly Richey, Adam Deitch, Steve Molitz and many more.

Special shows planned in Raleigh at the Lincoln Theatre!

Progressive funk collective The Motet will perform a special New Year’s Eve celebration with guests Polyrhythmics and DJ Weather on December 31, 2014.

The Motet is leading the new Funk revival and today the band announces a special New Year’s Eve celebration at Portland, Oregon’s Crystal Ballroom on December 31, 2014.  Known for throwing some of the best dance parties around, The Motet’s “New Year’s Eve in Funklandia” promises a festive night of great music, good vibes, and plenty of surprises. On hand for party are 8 piece afro-beat orchestra Polyrhythmics and Portland’s own turntablist DJ Weather.  Tickets, including special VIP packages, go on sale on Friday, August 8 at www.themotet.net.

Also announced today, The Motet will make some runs in the southeast and northeast this November.  On the schedule so far are stops at Terminal West in Atlanta, Georgia, Asheville Music Hall in North Carolina, a return to New York’s Brooklyn Bowl and Boston’s Brighton Music Hall, with other dates still to be announced. See below for the complete list of The Motet’s currently confirmed tour dates.

The Motet has been on tour this summer in support of their brand new album, simply titled The Motet. Fresh off festival stops including Summer Camp, Northwest String Summit, Euphoria Camping & Music Festival and a sold-out Red Rocks performance, the band is set to return to Colorado’s Front Range for their famed annual Halloween shows along Colorado’s Front Range.  Unveiled as this year’s always-anticipated theme for the famed parties:  “Mixtape 1975.” Tickets for The Motet’s “Mixtape 1975” shows are currently on sale at www.themotet.net.

Meanwhile, outside of the extensive tour dates, “More energy is being put toward writing original music,” Motet vocalist Jans Ingber explains.  “That’s the difference between The Motet four years ago and The Motet now.”

In this spirit, The Motet recently released their self-titled 7th album, which has been hailed as “ambitious, airtight and built to travel” (Boulder Weekly). The nine tracks on The Motet (released February 2014) seamlessly showcase an evolved, keenly refined musical vision of The Motet; a band committed to pushing the sonic envelope, while remaining dedicated to the musical traditions - funk, afrobeat, disco, jazz, and soul - that have long defined their sound. The Motet are well known in Colorado and beyond for keeping audiences in a dancing frenzy by layering precise and vibrant live instrumentation and electronic rhythms into a style that is uniquely their own. And in this age when EDM reigns over the dance music scene, The Motet is proof that funk is not even close to dead.  For this studio recording, each member of the band contributed to the writing and arranging of the album’s nine original songs.  Using traditional analog recording methods including tape, tubes and transistors, the music on The Motet offers all the crunch and bite of a classic 70’s funk record and is warm, rich, and organic in tone. But the music is fresh and forward – as much a glimpse into the future of funk music as it is homage to the past.

Started ten years ago by seasoned drummer Dave Watts as a rotating cast of musical friends, today The Motet has refined their sound and vision into a dynamic and expressive force. The Motet features an astonishingly talented cast of musicians who enjoy a palpable rapport when put together – Dave Watts (drums, musical director), Garrett Sayers (bass), Joey Porter (keyboards), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Jans Ingber (vocals) and horn players Gabe Mervine (trumpet) and Matt Pitts (sax).

Touring nationwide for the first time in the band’s history, The Motet are being hailed as “the best live band right now” (Source Audio).
