Iconic festival announces it has ended

One of the events that holds a special place in our hearts - has just announced it will not continue.  We'd like to thank all the folks at All Good Presents for all their hard work producing one of our favorite festivals each year.  Co-Founder Junipa Contento-Suslu writes the following via email:

"It is hard to believe that nearly 20 years have passed since our company began. With many talented bands coming through the Washington D.C. and Baltimore area, Tim Walther and I (Junipa Contento-Suslu) took it upon ourselves to begin a promotion and production company to focus on and heighten the awareness of a relatively new and burgeoning genre of music. Our love for this scene plus hard work and dedication led us to produce club shows and ultimately camp-out music festivals showcasing a weekend of the hottest touring bands, with the flagship event being the All Good Music Festival & Campout commencing in 1997.

We felt it was important to create an annual destination where like-minded fans could share and experience in the fusion of music art and camping within a safe and supportive community. We wanted people to come away transformed, just as this rise of musical rhapsody had transformed us. From humble beginnings at Wilmer's Park to the magic and life changing experiences of Marvin's Mountaintop we are forever grateful for the opportunity to spearhead and cultivate All Good Festival with beautiful landscapes, ground-breaking artists, the best supporting crew in the industry and undoubtedly the most kind and avid fans.

With that said and with a heavy heart we are announcing today that we are retiring the All Good Music Festival and Campout. We want to thank each of you for your support of live music, your love for our community and for sharing and creating everlasting All Good memories. This is not an end to the musical journey we are on, but the turning of a page sparking a new course for presenting the music we love.

Please stay tuned for the unveiling of the two-day All Good Presents celebration of music, community and arts set to take place on July 9 and 10 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Meanwhile check out the multitude of All Good Presents club shows, featuring established and emerging touring acts at your favorite venues such as; 9:30 Club, Rams Head Live, Gypsy Sally's, The 8x10, The Hamilton and more.

We look forward to seeing you at the next show."

Yours truly,

Junipa Contento-Suslu

The Motet and Fat Cheek Kat in Greensboro

The Motet and Fat Cheek Kat in Greensboro
Featuring a robust, retooled lineup and debuting two new full-time players, the Motet blows up Greensboro with a special Thursday night show at the Blind Tiger.

I have considered myself a fan of Dave Watts and The Motet for a long time. My attachment first blossomed on a sweltering day in July 2004 when I saw them play a delightful, percussion-infused Afro-Cuban dance set out in the middle of the woods on the Home Grown Music stage at SmileFest. It was an impressive performance, and one I often replayed on the Internet Archive. Years later, I got the opportunity to review "Dig Deep" for Home Grown, and it represented another intriguing, more electronic dance inspired version of the Motet and revealed the sort of chameleon nature of the Motet.

Progressive funk collective The Motet welcome lead vocalist Lyle Divinsky and saxophonist Drew Sayers to the band.

Today, The Motet announced new lead vocalist Lyle Divinsky (Turkuaz) and saxophonist Drew Sayers (Garret's brother) as official members of the band.

"As difficult as change can be, the addition of Lyle and Drew has felt like an incredibly natural progression for the band.  They are already brothers," says Motet keyboardist Joey Porter. "We are all feeling really inspired and are excited about the future."

Lyle Divinsky, a native of Portland, Maine, brings his powerful presence and love and light to The Motet. The unsuspecting soul man was awarded the Songwriter's Hall of Fame Abe Olman Scholarship (John Legend was the recipient in 2002), was hailed by Fuse TV's as an "Artist to Watch" and reached #4 on the UK Soul Chart's Top 40 earlier this year.

Powerhouse tenor saxophonist Drew Sayers, most recently of John Brown's Body, brings his huge sound and rich tone to The Motet.  Drew, who played and wrote horn arrangements on Beyonce's last two albums, has performed on late night TV, and produced the 2015 John Brown's Body release "Kings and Queens in Dub," also brings his writing and producing skills to the band.

The Motet in its new line up hits the road beginning today, February 18 in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Over the coming months, the band has stops throughout the South and the Midwest, ramps up the festival season with plays at Euphoria Music Festival and during New Orleans Jazz Fest (for a Mixtape 1977 set), and much more. The complete list of currently confirmed tour dates is included below.

The Motet are Garrett Sayers (bass), Joey Porter (keyboards), Ryan Jalbert (guitar), Gabriel Mervine (trumpet), Dave Watts (drums), Drew Sayers (saxophone), Garrett Sayers (bass), Lyle Divinsky (vocals).

The new additions to the lineup are: The Revivalists, The Motet, Rayland Baxter, TAUK, Larry Keel Experience, Cabinet, People's Blues of Richmond, Stephane Wrembel, Jon Stickley Trio, Jarekus Singleton, Wild Ponies, Erin & the Wildfire, Southern Belles, Annabelle's Curse, Trongone Band, L Shape Lot, Roosevelt Dime, Mason Via Band, Ghost Eagle, Welcome to Hoonah, Gabe Morales, Rex McGee & John Garris, Truckstop Preachers, Mission in the Rain, Juliana MacDowel, Slick Jr. & the Reactors, Maya Burgess, The Fernandez Sisters, the Patrick Henry Community College Patriot Players and a fire performance troupe, Fire My Spirit Productions.

These acts join previously announced co-headliners Lettuce and Sam Bush Band, as well as Perpetual Groove, Tab Benoit, Jeff Austin Band, Acoustic Syndicate, Yarn, Town Mountain, Billy Strings, Naughty Professor, Major & the Monbacks, After Jack, Sanctum Sully, Lizzy Ross, Junto, and Left Hip Pocket.

"Even before announcing these 30 acts, the fan response to Rooster Walk 8 has been phenomenal," said Johnny Buck, executive director of Rooster Walk. "We couldn't be happier with the way the lineup came together. We think it's our best one yet."

The RW8 lineup features a variety of musical styles, including funk (Lettuce, The Motet), bluegrass (Sam Bush, Larry Keel), blues (Tab Benoit, Jarekus Singleton), jambands (Perpetual Groove, TAUK), rock (The Revivalists, People's Blues of Richmond), jazz (Stephane Wrembel, Naughty Professor) and more.

Many of the bands will perform more than one set at Rooster Walk 8, which will take place May 26-29, 2016 and showcase a wide variety of arts, crafts, children's activities, food, on-site camping, a 5k footrace, delicious craft beer and more. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit www.roosterwalk.com.

Rooster Walk was created in memory of two Martinsville natives who passed away while still in their mid-20s: Edwin "the Rooster" Penn and Walker Shank. The festival is organized and operated by Rooster Walk Inc., a community nonprofit dedicated to promoting music, arts and education in Martinsville and Henry County.

In less than seven years, Rooster Walk Inc. has donated more than $80,000 to local charities, among them the Penn-Shank Memorial Scholarship Fund for seniors at Martinsville High School and an instrument donation and repair program for entry-level band programs at public schools in Martinsville and Henry County.

This unique combination of a "full festival" experience and the charitable nature of the event leads many to call Rooster Walk "More than a Festival."

The festival's title sponsor, Bassett Furniture, is based in nearby Bassett, Va. For more than 100 years, Bassett has been perfecting the art of crafting furniture full of American ingenuity. Their dedication to comfortable, long lasting furniture remains without compromise. Learn more at www.bassettfurniture.com
