Melvin Seals & JGB - Keepers Of The Flame CD

Melvin Seals has been a powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years with a long-established reputation as a performer, recording artist and producer. He has played with legends such as Chuck Berry, Charlie Daniels and Elvin Bishop. But perhaps Melvin is most revered for his powerful and high-spirited Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band, adding his gospel-soul touches to the rhythm and blues base of the JGB.

It was early 1980 and the Jerry Garcia Band was looking for a new keyboardist. "Melvin started playing with us, and he was just a monster. He turned out to be the guy that we were looking for all along," siad Jerry Garcia. Jerry's music spoke to Melvin in a language all its own. "There was church vibe all over the music, a sacred vibe, it was like what's known in church as a spiritual experience. Musically, I felt compatible. The way I played the organ was exactly what Jerry wanted," said Seals.

Fifteen years later Jerry was gone and it was another seven years before Melvin heard the Jerry sound again. It was at a concert in the Rockies when Melvin played for the first time with New Jersey-based Grateful Dead tribute band Ripple. After that he felt compelled to start a new JGB band.

Keepers of The Flame was recorded live at Hollywood's House Of Blues in 2005. Featuring John Kadlecik on guitar, Elgin Seals on bass, and the rest of the JGB players, this release does exactly what its title indicates: carries on the flame and style of JGB's meaningful music.
