Mandolinist Jeff Austin is unstoppable. He is celebrated for his fleet fingers and penchant for improvisation on stage, but those qualities also speak volumes about how he chooses to live. Austin has cultivated his natural musical abilities and allowed himself to be driven by his boldest instincts.  In this way, he has been able to build positive, exciting momentum around his life’s greatest passion.

“I remember standing in front of the Grateful Dead three weeks before I dropped out of college and thinking, ‘there’s so much more to this music thing than being educated and being told what you are,’”

Serendipitously, he met banjoist Dave Johnston around the same time. He encouraged Austin to try the mandolin so as to join his band The Bluegrassholes. “I never took lessons,” he admits. “ I jammed night after night with these guys. There’s something about the pace, the speed, the aggressiveness, the chasing of the beat.” Austin was hooked.

In 1998, Austin and friend Dave Johnston relocated to Nederland, Colorado and met Adam Aijala and Ben Kaufmann, later forming the Yonder Mountain String Band. Together, the four musicians have created a wild, high-energy niche among the bluegrass legends of old and the up and coming jam band scene. Over fifteen years, Yonder Mountain String Band have built an intensely loyal fan base by playing festivals and venues across the nation, sharing the stage with legends like Jon Fishman, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman, Earl Scruggs, Pete Thomas, and Jimmy Herring, and releasing five studio albums and five live recordings.

“My time with Yonder has taught me what is possible,” Austin says. “It has shown me that if you work hard at it and you believe in it and there’s a part of you that’s meant to do it, it will happen. It’s cliched, but it’s true.”  It is with this rich personal history at his back that propels Austin into a new creative direction as he prepares to step into the spotlight as a solo artist. On his forthcoming debut project, Austin’s songwriting remains rooted in Americana inspiration and the frantic energy of the jam genre but also, reaches even further weaving in more mainstream themes..Austin wants new and different, complex and interesting. He wants everything the music world has to offer, and he’s willing to work hard to get it.

Expect an evening full of new and energetic material along with many Yonder Mountain favorites with his band featuring Danny Barnes (banjo), Larry Keel (guitar) and Jenny Keel (bass)

JATOBA
On the surface, the energetic, rhythmic, acoustic sound that the Brattleboro based trio describes with the equation "bluegrass + new-grass = groovegrass" is the perfect soundtrack for kicking back and enjoying life, particularly on a sundrenched summer day. But listen a little closer and you'll discover a group that is rich, compelling, adventurous and artistically gutsy. What musicians John Jamison (acoustic guitar, mandolin, sitar and vocals), Jason Scaggs (acoustic guitar, acoustic baritone guitar, banjo and vocals) and Jeff Richardson (bass, spoons, vocals)bring to the table is a mixture of surprising chord changes, high-speed instrumental breakdowns, complex rhythms, adventurous solos, dream sequences, tight three-part vocal harmonies, lyrics which strike the ears like Beat generation poetry and often tell meaningful stories of introspection and redemption - these are all part of Jatoba's colorful, courageous palette.

The Hip Abduction mixes reggae, rock, and African traditions to create their own unique sound.

With heavy emphasis placed on African stringed instruments (kora, ngoni), dub-reggae-inspired bass lines, and funky afro-beat percussion, the band's high-energy performances have won them a loyal statewide following. Formed on the gulf coast of Florida in 2010, The Hip Abduction has quickly grown from just a few African instrument playing surfers to a full-blown 7-piece reggae powerhouse. “THA” (as coined by fans) is currently touring the east coast constantly while hyping their new soon-to-be-released 12-song LP, which was produced by Michael Goldwasser (Easy Star Records).

PURCHASE CD

The sophomore album produced by Michael Goldwasser (The Green, Matisyahu) finds The Hip Abduction crafting a solid American reggae album, along with the vintage-hued Afrobeat with tight brass, brawny elastic low-end grooves, and percussive-fueled rhythms.

BIG Something - BIG Something CD

BIG Something
Featuring howling guitar, engaging songwriting, and complex layered arrangements, “BIG Something” proves to be a dynamic sophomore release.
Pick’em, bake’em, Share’em: Dangermuffin – on Heels of Award-Winning Album Olly Oxen Free, Launches New Web Site Complete with The Band’s Entire Back Catalog Available for Free Download – Plans 2014 Album Release.

FOLLY BEACH, SC - Award-winning trio Dangermuffin has been very busy lately. In August, the band signed with new management, Mountain Entertainment, Inc and in October, launched a vibrant new website (www.dangermuffinmusic.com) – with a kicker.  The band’s entire four album catalog is available for free download (www.dangermuffinmusi.com/music) in preparation for the band’s new album due out in 2014.

The Band:
“Music should be free and available to people, plain and simple.  If folks decide to spend their time giving us a listen, we want to give them an opportunity to do so.  It is our belief that true music transcends the money and the desire for recognition; it's true purpose is to connect and unite under a common vibration.“ – Dan Lotti, lead singer/guitarist Dangermuffin

The Management:
“Dangermuffin isn’t a band as much as they are a movement, a culture, a statement about the way the relationship between art and human beings should be. We NEVER looked at making the band’s music being available for “free” as much as we looked at it as a way to give back to the fans for allowing the band access to their most prized possession, their time. – Marty Winsch, President/CEO Mountain Entertainment, Inc.

The Designer:
“It’s so wonderful when you discover something that speaks to you deeply, that connects with your soul, and that moves you to action!  A couple years ago I discovered Dangermuffin and their music and I knew immediately I wanted to be a part of this band, their family, and their evolution.” – Mark Skoultchi, Catchword Branding, www.catchwordbranding.com

The band is confirmed to play at Best Fest in Costa Rica in February 2014 and is planning a full slate of tour dates in support of the much-anticipated upcoming album.

Dangermuffin is much more than plainly an Americana or roots-rock band. Most strikingly, the band’s musical execution remains refreshingly simple, belying a staggering lyrical and thematic depth behind each individual song. Behind the virtuosic rhythms of drummer Steven Sandifer, the group seamlessly segues from calypso to world beat to a down-home shuffle, often within the same song. When guitarist Mikie Sivilli steps in with a powerful slide-driven lead, one might even venture to call it southern rock. But by the time songwriter Dan Lotti sings the first words of another verse with his unmistakable, light rasp, the listener is undeniably back on the beach, pondering both the world’s pleasures and ills through sandy toes.

The follow-up to 2010’s Moonscapes, which produced tracks that received generous airplay on both SiriusXM’s JamOn and Outlaw Country stations, Olly Oxen Free has found the band at their peak. Olly Oxen Free spent a total of 18 weeks at #1 on the HGMN Radio Chart above Grammy Award winners Mumford & Sons, Little Feat, and Avett Brothers. Not surprisingly, Olly Oxen Free was voted as #1 album of 2012 by both HGMN and by the city of Charleston, tying for the first place spot with Shovels & Rope’s ‘O Be Joyful. The album demonstrates heightened ambitions and a refined, road-polished assembly ready to take on the world. The funky groove ‘Homestead’ has become one of the most requested songs on SiriusXM’s JamOn.

Throughout the album, Lotti’s songwriting encourages us to be free, revel in the simple beauty of our complicated lives, and always seek out healing answers. Like the cry bellowed during a children’s game of hide-and-seek, Olly Oxen Free signals that it’s safe to come out from our hiding spots, gather together, and celebrate late into the evening. Dangermuffin is more ready than ever to provide the soundtrack.

“Dangermuffin make endlessly listenable music, with ambitious chording and instrumentation and few boundaries in their musical exploration. They bring to mind the more disciplined moments of bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead, with tight arrangements, interesting rhythms, hooks for days and compelling themes. With influences from such various sources as blues, prog rock, improv, country, jam, bluegrass and jazz, they're tough to categorize but easy to hear. They just make me feel good.” ~ Ray Waddell (Touring Writer for Billboard)

Del McCoury Band - The Streets of Baltimore CD

Del McCoury Band
As much as I love modern jamgrass/newgrass variations, they just don’t bring me back to time spent camping/existing with my grandfather on his stomping grounds in the Smoky Mountains of NC, the way the old timers like Del McCoury can.
