FloydFest 18 - Wild!

Up on the Blue Ridge Mountains, there I'll take my stand. Lord, I've been all around this world.

I've been to a lot of music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Lockn,' New Orleans Jazz & Heritage, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. I've seen incredible music at all of those, and I usually have a good time, but there's always a downside: bang-your-head-on-steering-wheel traffic bottlenecks, $15 Bud Lights, lukewarm fast food, overzealous police, hard drugs, loudmouth-drunk broheems, wookies, inadequate port-a-potties, litter, extreme heat and torrential downpours.

John Ferrara / Seth Moutal Duo - Raleigh 07.07.18

John Ferrara (Consider The Source) teamed up with Seth Moutal for a side project of music he had been working on, that was not CTS material. John had been playing around with looping pedals and bass lines, and thought it would be awesome to find a drummer to play a side project together with. While in Nyack NY at an open mic night, he first saw Seth ripping a drum solo, and killing it. He reached out to Seth a little later, to show him his songs. At their first rehearsal, they kept throwing ideas around, and it went well.

Wheels of Soul - 7/13/18, Raleigh NC

The Tedeschi Trucks Band charged forward like a jam-packed freight train at full speed, 12 wheels perfectly aligned and lubricated, all loyal to the shared destination of love, redemption and togetherness.

Long before Derek Trucks was born, Robert Johnson used a bottleneck slide to fight the hellhounds on his Mississippi Delta trail. Bessie Smith busked for pennies outside gospel churches on the streets of Chattanooga. John Coltrane emerged like a phoenix from rural North Carolina to the divine heights of "A Love Supreme." Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bill Monroe, Aretha Franklin, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley.

The Freeway Revival - Revolution Road

The Freeway Revival burst out of Asheville with their debut album in 2016 with a funky and soulful roots rock sound that quickly won them a devoted fanbase.

Dead & Company - 6/9/18, Raleigh, NC

Dead & Company - 6/9/18, Raleigh, NC
The temperature keeps risin,’ everybody gettin' high. Come the rockin' stroke of midnight, the whole place gonna fly! Hey, Saturday Night! Yeah, uh huh, one more Saturday night!

When I arrived at Raleigh's Walnut Creek Amphitheatre on Saturday to see Dead & Company, it was a typical June day in North Carolina, which means it was insanely hot and humid, and you better apply sunscreen and stay hydrated or you'll fry like okra at the K&W. The handful of trees in the parking lot became prime real estate, and the hydration of choice at Shakedown Street was, big surprise, ice cold beer.

Perpetual Groove, Larry Keel, Zach Deputy, Big Daddy Love, Urban Soil & more!

This Labor Day weekend in the beautiful mountains of Patrick County, VA, Front Porch Fest will commemorate its tenth anniversary with a Homecoming celebraon, bringing together friends and family to enjoy both new and returning acts on three stages.  As always, the festival will continue to feature the best in local, regional, and national music and vendors while raising money and awareness for local community organizations and charities.

The initial 2018 band lineup released in April featured bluegrass dynamos the Larry Keel Experience, the folk stylings of Bristol, Tennessee-based Annabelle's Curse, and 2017 festival favorites Dr. Bacon, along with other local and regional acts.  Now the festival is adding even more star power to their lineup, including naonal jam band legends Perpetual Groove, the "island-infused drum n' bass gospel ninja soul" of multi-instrumentalist Zach Deputy, fan favorites Big Daddy Love and Urban Soil, and more.  The festival will also continue to highlight the best in local talent, including Waiting to Exhale, a Patrick County group fronted by two women vocalists, both daughters of hard working Appalachian families with roots deep and long in the mountains of Virginia.

Front Porch Fest is produced each Labor Day by One Family Productions, a volunteer nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting and supporting community enrichment and growth in their nave southwest Virginia.  The festival is a family friendly event and kids are welcome - they can groove to the tunes while doing arts and cras and other fun activities in the Children's Area.  Both single-day and weekend tickets are available, including camping, car camping, and RV passes.  In addition, the festival features plenty of food and merchandise vendors to ensure an enjoyable weekend.
