The inaugural two day event featuring Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, John Mayer, The Black Crowes, O.A.R., Michael Franti & Spearhead and many others.
"Regarded as a breakout [festival] hit" (New York Times / April 2008), today the first annual Mile High Music Festival powered by SanDisk unveils the highly anticipated festival schedule. Visit www.milehighmusicfestival.com to view stage times for the stellar line-up of over 40 artists to appear July 19th and 20th at the Outer Fields at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will headline on Saturday, July 19th; Dave Matthews Band will top the bill on Sunday, July 20th.  Colorado has never before seen a music festival of this magnitude: hosting five stages (some tented), food from many of Denver's top restaurants, an artists' village, misting tents and more. Single-day and 2 day passes are on sale now at  www.MileHighMusicFestival.com.

Also recently unveiled is the Festival's "Carpool to Mile High" Contest. Patrons are being encouraged to "Go Green" by carpooling with four or more people in one vehicle.  Here's how it works: Make a fun and noticeable sign in your car window telling everybody who can see, that you are carpooling.  Sign must in include the words: "Carpool to Mile High".  When you arrive at the Festival go to the 64th Avenue entrance and follow signs to Carpool Parking.  In addition to premium, close-in parking, you will be automatically entered to win VIP passes and access to a MHMF artist meet-and-greet for everyone in your car.  Winner's license plate numbers will be announced on the Main Stage video screens at 5 PM both days, and prizes will be redeemed at the Merchandise Tent.  All cars admitted in the carpool lot will be entered to win.

Also just announced, Colorado based not-for-profit Conscious Alliance will host a Food Drive at the Mile High Music Festival to benefit Food Bank of the Rockies (www.FoodBankRockies.org). All patrons donating 10 non-perishable food items, or $10.00, will receive a limited edition Conscious Alliance/Mile High Music Festival poster by rock artist Randy Bishop.  Volunteers will be stationed outside the festival's main entrances, where patrons can exchange their donations for a voucher that is redeemable at the Conscious Alliance booth inside the venue.  For more information on Conscious Alliance and the work they do, please visit www.consciousalliance.org.

Mile High Music Festival will feature a tremendous variety of musical talent, ranging from established touring powerhouses to some of the hottest up-and-coming performers, including a number of bands from Denver's vibrant music scene. In addition to the headliners, performance highlights include John Mayer, The Black Crowes, Mike Gordon, O.A.R., Michael Franti & Spearhead, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Steve Winwood, Spoon, Jason Mraz, Flogging Molly, Colbie Caillat, OneRepublic, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco plus local favorites Flobots, Rose Hill Drive, Meese, Born In The Flood , Railbenders and The Photo Atlas. A complete list of currently confirmed acts is included below, with additional artists still to be announced. Visit http://www.milehighmusicfestival.com for ongoing updates. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. each day, with performances commencing at noon and ending at 11:00 p.m.

Mile High Music Festival marks the first outdoor festival held at the Outer Fields of Dick's Sporting Goods Park, which offers immaculate lawns and remarkable vistas of the Denver skyline and Rocky Mountain Front Range, including a panoramic view from Long's Peak to Pikes Peak. Concertgoers will have a wide range of cuisines to choose from, with many of Denver's most popular restaurants participating in the event. An artists' village - including an extensive exhibit of local arts and crafts - will be another highlight of the festival.

Festival tackles the huge task of greening a large scale event.

ROTHBURY:A FESTIVAL CELEBRATING MUSIC, ART AND ACTION
JULY 3 - 6, 2008 IN ROTHBURY, MICHIGAN

As leaders in the evolving art of sustainable large-scale event production, ROTHBURY is 100% committed to taking every possible step to reduce the environmental impact of the festival.  While such a commitment does not come without its challenges, ROTHBURY, together with local and national partners who share the same pledge, will indeed demonstrate the vast possibilities in sustainability and hopefully highlight those areas that need serious attention.

ROTHBURY, working with Green Chief Sarah Haynes of the Spitfire Agency, is the first major U.S. camping festival to aim for a near zero waste event by composting throughout the entire festival site. All disposable food service items have been replaced with plant-based compostables.  Compost will be pulped on-site thanks to Morbark, then processed by Spurt Industries in Grand Rapids.

In an effort to reduce plastic water bottle waste, ROTHBURY is working with Klean Kanteen to encourage crew and festival-goers to bring or buy reusable bottles and to take advantage of free refill stations in the campgrounds, within the festival site, and in the backstage areas.  For those who choose to buy disposable water bottles, the only front-of-house provider on-site  will be Earth Water.  In passing up the big companies and going with Earth Water, ROTHBURY will contribute to building wells in refugee camps all over the world.  100% of Earth Water's profits go to building wells; and $500 builds a well.  That's a lot of wells!

For those darn bottles, ROTHBURY will offer 200 waste reclamation stations throughout the site, most of them manned by a 500 person green team of volunteers committed to helping avoid contamination. The Green Team will also work around-the-clock backstage to re-sort all recycling bags that come in. An additional 55 people will work for three straight days post event to sift every single 'bad' item out on tables, much like a conveyer belt system.

Additional ROTHBURY sustainability initiatives include the use of biodiesel.  ROTHBURY's local B99 biodiesel provider, Next Diesel, is the first company to be a part of Michigan Governor Granholm's green business incentive program. The biodiesel used by ROTHBURY is actually a waste product from manufacturing ethanol. So not only is it plant based, it is also recycled and on it's second life at ROTHBURY.

In addition to offsetting carbon emissions with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, ROTHBURY has partnered with RVL 7 by RE:VOLVE Apparel, Black Rock Solar and Grand Rapids' own Bauer Power to create the ROTHBURY Solar Schools Program, to support the local community and honor our energy independence theme. The 2008 recipient of the Solar Schools Program, which donates fully installed solar panel systems  to local area schools, is Michigan's Shelby High School. With many ROTHBURY attendees opting in for the festival's Green Ticket (which allows ticket buyers to contribute to the Solar Schools Fund), ROTHBURY's initial $50,000 donation is rapidly growing.  Many thanks to local heroes Bauer Power for offering to build for free so even more money will go to outfitting the school with solar power.

Part of ROTHBURY's objective and sustainability in general, is to support local companies and farmers and organic products whenever possible.  All foods collected in the Conscious Alliance Food Drive will be donated directly to local food pantries and charities to benefit neighboring communities and the on-site Farmers' Market will be powered by area farmers, who are also learning the benefits of organics and how to begin growing organics in their own farms.  To further promote the use of organic goods, RVL 7 by RE:VOLVE will provide all ROTHBURY staff with crew shirts made of a blend of organic cotton and recycled polyethylene terephthalate, or RPET, t-shirts. ROTHBURY has donated to Michigan's chapter of Global Re-Leaf, a tree planting organization that will plant trees in the Muskegon area following the event.

For those interested in taking a piece of this sustainability mission home with them, ROTHBURY is hosting on-site Think Tank panel discussions with some of the top thinkers in the field of Climate Change and Clean Energy.  Attendees are encouraged to take part in the discussions, help develop solutions, and start making changes at home.  The Better World Books bookstore on-site will be stocked with books that match ROTHBURY's ideals and will host signings by many of the participating panelists as well as Our Planet, a guide to saving the environment, created by MySpace.

While producing large-scale sustainable events is far from a perfect science, ROTHBURY is leading the mission to encourage discussion, promote creative thinking and seek new ideas in this effort - not to mention, throwing a serious party.

Musician and activist Kathy Mattea will serve as host for a showing of Michael O’Connell’s award-winning film, “Mountain Top Removal”, Thursday, July 10th at 5:30pm at The Basement in Nashville.
matteaMattea recently viewed the film at the Nashville Film Festival and was moved by the scenes of environmental destruction wrought in her native West Virginia by the coal mining technique called "mountain top removal". Says Mattea, "You must see this to believe it. I am saddened that we've 'progressed' to a point where we think this is an acceptable practice. Michael O'Connell's film gives voice to those that have no multi-million dollar PR firm to tell their story. The visuals are gut-wrenching--there are no words to describe the devastation."

The film recently won the 2008 Reel Current Award from former Vice-President Al Gore, this year's Nobel Peace Prize Winner and the subject of the Academy Award-winning documentary "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH". The award was presented to O'Connell at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival, where the film was shown to a capacity crowd.  In addition to that prestigious honor, the film has also won First Prize at the Charlotte Film Festival, First Prize at the Mion Solutions Environmental Film Awards, and the Jury Award at the Wild and Scenic Film Festival.

"It's a story of personal determination and courage," Gore told an assembled audience of festival attendees and media members. "It's also a story about the terrible impact on families in the communities that are victimized by
the way in which the coal is being removed from the tops of mountains in Appalachia. This film really brings out the human dimensions of this because you see it through the eyes of a family that's greatly affected and you feel
it in the emotions of a small town that has really been hurt a lot."

Mattea's recent album, "COAL", serves as a meditation on her family roots in the coal country of West Virginia. Recorded as a tribute to "my place and my people," the album features her take on classic mining songs from Hazel Dickens, Jean Ritchie, Merle Travis and others to paint a nuanced portrait, exploring the tragedy that often comes from life in the mines while paying respects to the strength and humility that provides a bedrock foundation to the community. She will be introducing the movie and speaking briefly about the impact of mountain top removal that she has witnessed firsthand.

Filmmaker O'Connell will also be in attendance and will be answering questions after the film.grassrootsdvd

The Basement is located at 1604 8th Ave. South in Nashville. Go to www.thebasementnashville.com for directions.

In a letter on Phish.com, Page McConnell says...

page"Given the volume of speculation and rumors that have bubbled up recently, I have been asked to make a statement...Here goes.

For me, the last four years have been great. I've spent quality time with my family and have watched my daughter grow. I took great pleasure and pride in writing and recording an album. I'm living a healthy lifestyle. I travel as little as possible and I sleep in my own bed. It took a couple of years after the break up to begin talking to my old band mates, but once the conversations began to flow it wasn't long before the friendships were rekindled. And I can honestly say that I'm closer with all of them now then I've ever been in our 20-year relationship.

Recently the conversations have turned toward the possibility of spending some time together. Currently many of us have plans and projects already in the works, most notably Mike, who made a great album and is about to hit the road in support of it. Given that I might not even see some of the guys for the next six months, I would say that the announcement of a reunion is premature. However, later this year we hope to spend some time together and take a look at what possible futures we might enjoy. In fact the only real decision that has been made is that when we do get together, it will only be the four of us, hopefully with no distractions. I am really looking forward to that.

I want to say just a few more things. The prospect of Phish reuniting is something I consider very seriously, and I think about it a lot. And lastly, as always, there is plenty of misinformation floating around. Try not to focus too much on secondhand sources and random gossip. If there is anything real to announce, it will come from the four of us as a group.

Until then, Page"

Bonnaroo Music Festival 2008

After 7 years of legendary events, Bonnaroo has morphed into a well-oiled live music machine.

With fans, staff, crew, and performers all becoming more and more acclimated to the event as years go by, there's a tangible sense of comfort and familiarity that belies the sprawling mass of humanity that descends on Manchester each June. Campground areas bear the same moniker as years past, food and craft vendors have familiar spots that have turned into landmarks and the 5 main music stages seem to have found permanent coordinates, making the concertgoing experience even easier for veterans of the fest.

Rev. Zicka-funk's future peak at what's to come
all_good_hillIt's been six years ago this May since I covered my first All Good. Back then the festival seemed to reflect my life raw, wide-open and untamed. It was cold and rainy, at that time being what seasoned heads refer to as an "Early Season Joint", All Good still delivered. Despite inclement weather that year, Galactic and Gov't Mule and Karl Denson's Tiny Universe among others played amazing sets and the overall experience was monumental. I feel like I've grown up with this festival both as a journalist and a music lover and over the years some things about the All Good experience have faired the weather: it's commitment to accommodate all walks of life, the general feeling of family and sharing and it's hard hitting talent roster... not to mention the breath taking view off of Marvin's Mountaintop.

CrowdNightFast-forward to 2008, All Good has bloomed to a full-blown, eclectic, three day banger sporting some of the finest touring talent the scene has to offer. Thursday nights in past years have been a musical gold mine for the "early arrivals" and this year promises the same with the likes of Perpetual Groove, the Brazilian Girls and a screaming set from the Join featuring keyboardist Jamie Shields and drummer Darren Shearer of the NEWDEAL and Marco Benevento & Joe Russo (the DUO).

BigNazo4If you can't make it Thursday night never fear, Friday is set up to run with SOJA, Phil Lesh & Friends, Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, All Mighty Senators, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals, The Avett Brothers, Basshound, RAQ on Friday followed by a stacked Saturday featuring The Bridge, Widespread Panic, Bassnectar, Keller Williams w. Moseley, Droll & Sipe, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Soul Stew Revival, Mike Gordon, Tea Leaf Green, Outformation and Eric Lindell to round it out. (Whew) The list goes on for Sunday but the bottom line here is the organizers didn't skimp on talent so can attendees get their live music fix and their boogie on all weekend long. The great thing about the camping arrangement on Marvin's Mountaintop is that you can access the festivities easily from most areas without having to walk excessively far. If you arrive later in the weekend you probably won't get stuck camping in the boon docks but you'll miss monumental sets so don't lag.

Both Friday and Saturday offer tasty late night treats featuring, Gov't Mule (Friday) and Dark Star Orchestra (Saturday) respectively. One of my favorite things to do at AG after a slamming late night set is to hike out to a remote ledge in the wee hours and watch the fog lurch in through the ravine to the east of the campground just before the sun's first ray pierces the spine of the rolling Maryland mountains.

stage_sunsetThe fabulous team at Walther Productions toils year-round to bring you the finest offerings on the Mid-Atlantic festival circuit and have been doing so for twelve years. For me, AG is more like a sprawling family reunion where you come to reacquaint with old friends and meet new smiling faces alike. The entire experience is peppered with fantastic, continuous music on three stages, artisan vendors, day workshops for campers of all ages, international cuisine and a slew of face melting visual goodies via the goofy but lovable goons from Big Nazo. This year's All Good promises to be all better so make the jaunt to the mountaintop in Masontown, West Virginia for a dazzling weekend of fun and camping fit for the whole family.
