Sam Holt & Cameron Williams - 05.06.2009 - The Pour House, Raleigh NC

The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow.
"The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow" according to Jimi Hendrix in "The Wind Cries Mary". But all the lights were green on the way home a few Wednesday nights ago and that's a good thing. When you have to go to work in the morning there is a big difference between getting home at 2:30 and 2:45. Why was I driving home so late? Because I was coming back from seeing SCAM at the Pour House in Raleigh. That would be Sam Holt and Cameron Williams. And the reason they ended so late was no real mystery... they started late. Why? The Phamily Reunion Announces A Special Weekend to Coincide with Phish At Red Rocks

Fans that did not score tickets to Phish at Red Rocks Amphitheatre should worry not; there just happens to be a four-day camping and music festival a few short miles away on a private ranch. For those that did score tickets, The Phamily Reunion Festival offers what Red Rocks cannot: camping and a safe ride to and from the festival to each Phish show. Set for July 30 through August 2 on the beautiful Van Eden Ranch in Idaho Springs, the good souls that love Phish, live music, camping, hiking, biking, hot springs and much more, will come together for a special string of days, all set to the good vibes of the Colorado Rockies.

With an already heavy-hitting lineup including The New Mastersounds, EOTO, The Heavy Pets, Juno What?!, LYNX & Janover, Ana Sia, YAMN and others, the festival promises to be big enough to stand on its own without Phish coming to town. With rumors surfacing after the 1996 Phish shows at Red Rocks about the band being banned because of an infiltration of campers in Morrison, CO, The Phamily Reunion is the perfect spot for one of the most coveted aspects of a Phish tour: community. And who knows, campers may just score the ticket they were looking for on the grounds of the ranch.

With four-day event passes available and buses running back and forth all day from the campgrounds to Red Rocks, it's the ultimate and safest option. Add to that the chance to fish, hike, whitewater raft, gamble, soak in the hot springs, and horseback ride, The Phamily Reunion makes for perhaps the best all-around experience for both Coloradans and those visiting. Before heading to the lot at Red Rocks, campers can get their dancing feet warmed up to live music, only to be treated to late-night DJs and bands from Colorado and coast-to-coast.

Headlining the festival are The New Mastersounds, a funk, soul, jazz and rock quartet hailing from across the pond in England. It's a true privilege to have such a pioneering act in the "new funk" movement in the Front Range of Colorado. From Colorado are slated both EOTO and Juno What?!, the former being a cutting-edge electro/improvisational duo, comprised of the rhythm section of The String Cheese Incident. Likewise, Juno What?! is a new project to come of the highly touted Colorado group The Motet, which has a passionate fan base in and around Colorado. Juno What?! brings back the eighties with a new look, combining fresh funk with quasi-disco undertones. The Heavy Pets are one of the hottest, up-and-coming jam bands on the circuit, all the way from Florida. Ana Sia is a psychedelic hip-hop DJ from San Francisco that drops huge beats, while the hip-hop, beat-boxing and innovative percussion of LYNX & Janover are not to be forgotten. More artists are to be announced, so stay tuned.

Fans won't want to miss this epic weekend on the grounds of the Van Eden Ranch, where what is not being offered at Red Rocks is more than possible at The Phamily Reunion.

Through their Camp Naukabout Scholarship Fund, a segment of Naukabout focused on providing children in need with camp-based opportunities, the host company has teamed up with the Fresh Air Fund (www.freshair.org), an independent not-for-profit organization that provides free summer vacations (through camp & host family programs) to inner-city youngsters in need. A portion of the festival proceeds will be donated to the Fresh Air Fund in order to send kids to camps in upstate New York.

"Naukabout was formed on the basis of experiencing what we call Naukabout moments," states Adam Conley, Director of Operations for Naukabout. "Providing kids, who normally would not have the opportunity, with the chance to experience their own Naukabout moments through a camp environment is one of the core values behind this festival, our scholarship program and the company as a whole."

Concert funds replacement of toxic school and promotes clean energy.

mtaid2_0Spending a summer weekend listening to music will help to ensure a safe school for hundreds of children.  How?  The Mountain Aid concert June 19-20, 2009 at Shakori Hills Farm in Chatham County, NC benefits Pennies of Promise, a grassroots campaign to construct a new building for Marsh Fork Elementary School in West Virginia.

Tucked into the heart of Appalachia, Marsh Fork Elementary sits in the shadow of a Mountain Top Removal coal mine, just 225 feet from the coal silo and 400 yards downstream from a leaking dam holding back nearly three billion gallons of toxic sludge.  Independent tests prove coal dust contaminates Marsh Fork Elementary, a direct threat to the children's respiratory health.  Grandfather Ed Wiley began Pennies of Promise after his granddaughter got sick and West Virginia leaders told him the state could not afford a new school in a safer location.  The goal?  Raise eight million dollars and create a healthy future for the children of Appalachia. That's where Mountain Aid comes in.

Grammy-winning singer and songwriter and West Virginia native Kathy Mattea will emcee and headline Mountain Aid.  "Hosting Mountain Aid is the best way I can think of to spend my 50th birthday.  I love these mountains, and to celebrate them and unite with others who love them, through music, is a great opportunity," Mattea says.  Other performers include Ben Sollee, named one of NPR's "Top Ten Unknown Artists" of the year for 2007; American music icon Donna the Buffalo; and roots rockers the Sim Redmond Band

Advance tickets for Mountain Aid are on sale now for $22.50 ($30 at the gate).  On-site camping, food and craft vendors will be available.

mtaidWhy hold Mountain Aid in North Carolina?  According to Duke Energy, North Carolina is the number two consumer of Mountain Top Removal coal in the country.  Additionally, a bill before North Carolina lawmakers would ban the use of Mountain Top Removal coal in the state.  Mountain Aid organizers hope both to raise funds for Pennies of Promise and to create awareness and support for clean energy.

Mountain Top Removal mining, the practice that causes the environmental harm in and around Marsh Fork Elementary, is the subject of the award-winning documentary, "Mountain Top Removal," directed by Michael O'Connell.  "Mountain Top Removal" has played film festivals domestically and internationally and won the Reel Current award selected and presented by Vice President Al Gore at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival.  In conjunction with Mountain Aid, the film will screen on June 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Carolina Theatre in Durham.

Mountain Aid thanks our generous sponsors Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition and Coal River Mountain Watch.

If you had to settle on just one festival to attend this year which one would it be? How would you choose? Summer is almost here and with so many festivals on the horizon it's kind of hard to decide...or is it? Let's break it down a bit. What do you look for in a festival? The first most obvious answer would be the music. After that it would be the price of admission and then the overall "festival experience". As far as having the most bands to choose from there's really only two festivals that stand out, Bonnaroo & Rothbury. Bonnaroo may have the edge when it comes down to the most bands but for the overall ultimate festival experience - It's Rothbury, hands down...or hands up!

roth5

roth3Music wise, Rothbury will not disappoint. You can see just about everyone you would want to see at any other festival right here in one place. Rothbury will not only offer some of the best artists but also an adventure that you will surely cherish for many years to come. Think of it as a weekend retreat to a place that's not even from this Earth but a far off distant world in some other strange universe. The Sherwood Forest experience alone is nearly worth the price of admission. Committed to exploring the integration of art and modern thought and technology throughout the event, Rothbury creates a unique 21st century American gathering unlike any other.

As far as entertainment goes when you decide to take a breather from the awesome line-up, Rothbury is, essentially, a giant playground for big kids. Most noteworthy of all is the Sherwood Forest. Set up last year by SCI's ex light man, Andy Carrol, Sherwood Forest left you wondering where exactly you were in the world. It was a visual paradise, with large, florescent, geometric ornaments swaying gently in the trees, giant enchanted pumpkins large enough for you to sit in springing up from the ground, brightly colored hammocks stretching from tree to tree, and a peaceful, elaborate garden made up of sticks, rocks, and fruit. Not to mention the people in ornate costumes playing hide and go seek between the thick forests. And that's just in the daytime.
roth2

When you're not busy getting lost in the forest, you'll be busy getting lost in the heavy beats of the "spun monkeys", a mechanical device placed just inside the main gate. You'll slightly revert back to your 7 year old self while gazing at the jungle gym-like structure of the Tripolee Domes, one of the stages designed for you to get down (and up!) in.  You can lose an hour or two playing in the percussive junk garden with instruments made from recycled...well, junk. Everywhere you turn at Rothbury, your senses are bombarded with artful stimuli. I can only imagine what wonders they will come up with this year. I'm also looking forward to checking out the Rothbury Think Tank. Hands-on workshops will offer opportunities to learn how to find a green job, make your home and office more energy efficient, grow your own organic food, and more.

Rothbury 2009 also unveils its broadened Good Life VIP offerings. Expanded this year to fit all budgets and tastes, Rothbury's VIP experiences are unmatched by any other U.S. festival. Utilizing the festival's unique site, fans can choose from a variety of sleeping/living options including beach front and forested environments and a selection of habitats such as safari tents, teepees, pre-fab camping packages and more.  Each Good Life neighborhood offers a distinctly different living experience for a variety of budgets.

Jimmy Herring Band - 05.03.2009 - Raleigh, NC

When a certified guitar god visits your city you go pay homage!

jhbandIt was a perfect night for some music in Raleigh so I headed to the Lincoln Theater. I have still never heard Jimmy Herring speak a word on stage. Not a "Thanks, goodnight." Not a "One, two, three, four." Not even a "On drums tonight..." Not even when it's with his own band. He lets a pair of Fender Stratocasters do all the talking. And those boys have things they want to tell you.
