Other Bands

With the advent of so many great jam bands, one may think that composition is less important than virtuosic musicianship. Enter Chicago’s Herbert Wiser Band.

While they ARE stellar musicians (as anyone who's seen them live can attest) the main focus has always been to showcase their greatest asset: songwriting. Take their album Unusable Signal. Combining traditional rock rhythms with a myriad of musical influences ranging from country to hip-hop and everything in between, it's sure to have something for everyone and is the thing for people who crave musical diversity. This commitment to excellence has garnered them stage time with a diverse group of excellent musicians, sharing the stage with Umprhey's McGee, Tea Leaf Green, Backyard Tire Fire, The Station, U-Melt, Fareed Haque Group, and many more. As a Green Bay resident wrote on a cocktail napkin after first seeing them: "Think Talking Heads meets Frank Zappa meets Rage Against the Machine meets Devo meets Hall and Oates...ON STEROIDS!"

Green Lights'(patient like the moon) is a giant leap forward for this Charlotte-based trio! Containing well-rounded instrumental ideas from start to finish, this disc runs the gamut from flat-out funk to surreal interludes and back again.

The finely-honed musicianship of Kevin Gill (guitar), Dustin Hofsess (bass), and Adam Snow (drums) makes the album pop with memorable melodies, intermingling instruments, and energetic experimentations.

"It would behoove the true believers of modern jazz to lend a lucid ear to the genius that is Green Light." --Tim Beeman, ESP Magazine

"Finally there's music that exists solely to create a mood..." --Christina Mitchell, Charleston Post & Courier

Some key points of departure are: the spirituality and intense energy of saxophone master John Coltrane; the psychedelic colors of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd; the down-home soul of The Meters and Sly & the Family Stone; the groundbreaking jazz/rock/funk of Miles Davis; the beautiful reggae grooves of Bob Marley & the Wailers.

It's a familiar question by now. "Why Gnappy? What does it mean?" The answer is simple. It means "funky." "I grew up in Houston," says guitarist/producer Buck McKinney. "Gnappy was slang for 'funky.' It might mean funky 'weird,' or funky 'groove,' but it always meant 'funky.'"

The name fits. Muddy Waters once sang "the blues had a baby, and they call it rock and roll." If 70's-era groove-jazz had a baby, they might just as well call it Gnappy. Combining elements of 70's jazz-funk with 60's horn-driven pop, Gnappy sounds like the bastard son of Tower of Power and Average White Band, with a healthy dose of Wired-era Jeff Beck thrown in for good measure. That's not to say that Gnappy is an exacting "throwback." To the contrary, Gnappy's sound is less "tribute" than "homage," and its reverence for vintage funk is balanced by an appreciation for hip-hop, modern jazz and electronica. But roots run deep, and Gnappy's roots run decidedly to the groove.

Gnappy unveiled their contemporary approach to the funk-jazz idiom on their eponymous 2001 debut - an album that landed on many critics' top-ten lists, and held-down the "Featured Artist" page of internet-giant Napster for an unheard-of 4 weeks. The achievement clearly suggested that Gnappy could hold their own in a peer-to-peer world dominated by indie-rock, hip-hop and pop, and may be as good an argument as any for the promise of "cross-over jazz." In the words of one music critic, "if you heard Gnappy's MP3s on Napster before its early demise like I did, you probably became hooked." (Music Revue).

In 2003, Gnappy released their follow-up Is This A Machine? - which, again, received near-unanimous critical acclaim and upped the ante for 21st century funk-jazz. The result - "63 minutes of classic groove - dig it." (Austin Chronicle).

Gnappy's third album, Unloaded, is perhaps their most ambitious musical statement to date - a deliberate piece of work in which the compositions speak as loudly as the performances of them. From the unforgettable theme of the title track "Unloaded," to the modern boogaloo "Gatorade Brain," to the staccato double-horn attack of "Sushi Pimp" - Gnappy exhibits a dizzying array of moods and styles, and yet all of the songs share a cohesive modus operandi - tight arrangements, crisp performances and focused melodies. For the involved listener, this taught, turn-on-a-dime approach yields rich rewards.

Guest appearances add to the bounty, including the trumpet-work of fellow Austinite Ephraim Owens (Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Blaze). Additional surprises include Gnappy's first vocal performance (on title track "Unloaded"), and the hip-hop workout "Bahl Hornin'." Icing on the cake is Gnappy's four-way musical ping-pong match "Grease Don't Freeze," which nearly blows the roof off the joint. In the end, Unloaded may be the most aptly-titled album of the year. Like a veteran prize-fighter, Gnappy leaves it all in the ring.

Euforquestra is an eclectic world-beat ensemble from Iowa City, IA with interests in different cultural and traditional musics from all over the globe.

The band has made a mission statement out of preserving different traditions, undescriminatingly trying anything at least once and fusing different styles that appeal to them. The self-proclaimed "Afro-Caribbean-Barnyard-Funk" touches on such genres as Afrobeat, Afro-Cuban, Samba, Soca, Funk, Reggae, and Bluegrass. Though the band is relatively new, they have performed in several states in the midwest and in festivals like moe's Summer Camp, Spookstock (Schwagstock), Bockmans Campout and Wakarusa. In addition to these festivals, Euforquestra hosts its own annual celebration of community and music, where nearly 700 of the areas fans have gathered for 5 bands in an entire day of music.

What makes this band special is that something new is always being performed by Euforquestra as new projects drive the band into further musical studies. For example, Explorations in Afrobeat, the bands 2006 release, is a fusion of western african and cuban musics rooted in the Yoruba tradition. Having had 2 members study in Cuba, the band dives deep into a rich tradition of Cuban rhythm and song evolved from the Yoruba tribe which was brought to Cuba as well as other countries years ago during the slave trade. Here is where the band connects essentially two branches from the same tree.

"The new CD(Can U Get It) Zips along like a lively summit conference between The Dave Matthews Band and Little Feat, with African Drumming and enviromentally concious lyrics as well." - Steve Morse, The Boston Globe " Vineyards Entrain is enroute to huge success...with their ability to reliably merge funk, rock, reggae, swamp and worldbeat rhythms into a sweaty good time."- The Boston Herald.

Dread Clampitt formed in 2002 with Kyle Ogle (guitar, vocals) and Balder Saunders (mandolin, vocals) making music on the front porch of their Grayton Beach, FL trailer, with Justin Price-Rees (fiddle, vocals) joining the band shortly thereafter.

Kenny Oliverio (upright bass, vocals) is the newest addition to the band, playing upright bass; he fills the shoes of Duke Bardwell (former bass player for Elvis Presley) who was very instrumental in getting Dread Clampitt where they are today. Helping to mold the music and lives of the guys, they call him the Godfather. The music, dubbed "hipbilly" by Balder Saunders, combines Bluegrass, Blues, Rock & Roll, Louisiana Bayou Funk & Swamp music with a heavy reliance on Jazz rhythms. It's a difficult sound to describe, so we suggest taking a minute to listen to what they have to offer. The lyrics are clever and often heartfelt. They combine a mixture of humor with a real outlook at the world and the people and places around them.

Crawling out of the thick electronic ooze with a sublime mix of eternity-tickling guitars, elliptical pop hooks, epic rock progressions and swirling seas of spacey jazz-dub fury, The Disco Biscuits are drawing up the blueprints for a new musical architecture.

Applying their bizzare spin to electronica, these bionic pop-composers are cruising warp-speed ahead through dance music's maddening maze - folding disco, house, techno, and dub modes into their shape-shifting soundscapes.

"The world's most ragingly experimental beat-saavy quartet...The Biscuits are spearheading an entire generation of beatwise improvisers...Sure, other improv-oriented acts have dabbled in dance music over the years...but the Biscuits have channeled this fusion into a bona-fide subculture." - SPIN

An original eclectic blend of rock, jazz, latin & world grooves, BuzzUniverse features smoking horns and a rock-solid rhythm section.

Described by jambands.com as "addictive & hip-grinding," BuzzUniverse has enlightened loyal fans with brilliantly crafted songs, incredible vocal harmonies and ferocious live energy.

Natives of Elizabeth, New Jersey, BuzzUniverse aims to spread their unique sound and positive vibe far and wide! More exploratory than a pop band but not quite a jamband, BuzzUniverse has demonstrated a unique approach in getting their music heard. They took a 'play all day to whoever is passing' gig at New York's Chelsea Piers for the past two summers; they've financed their own free performances in New York City Parks; they've even managed to get a mention in the New York Post's infamous Page Six gossip column. Check out birdfishtree and see what the Buzz is all about!

jambands.com: "Talented & Eclectic...Fun & Funky...Addictive, Hip-Grinding... Buoyant & Blissful... Buzz Universe has certainly raised the bar for themselves with the release of birdfishtree. They have grabbed opportunity by the balls and created a fine album that has plenty of thrilling moments, all the while retaining their tight, cohesive ensemble sound. This record is going to provide a lot of joy to a lot of people, and hopefully, it will springboard this band on to bigger and better things."

New York Post: "That Hot Band from Jersey, BuzzUniverse, who rocked Washington Square Park this weekend, will be celebrating the release of their new CD, birdfishtree, at the Lions Den on October 26th."

www.jammedonline.com: "These guys play really well together - there's a definite sense of the band being a single unit, as opposed to the 'the lead virtuoso guy and the other ones' scenario that many bands find them selves in. And if nobody here has an individually strong voice, then the harmonies make up for it - the bands voices blend really well together. Add a very pleasing variety of musical styles, and the overall package is pretty darn good."

The Hudson Reporter: "Another band might boast that their music combines all genres and fall short. BuzzUniverse is a band that might just pull it off. "
