New Releases:

Avett BrothersThe Avett Brothers - The Carpenter CD - The Avetts are back, produced again by Rick Rubin, with the much-anticipated follow-up to I and Love and You. The twelve songs on The Carpenter continue the band's exploration of the human condition. They will pull at your heart and make you stop and think. One moment filled with sunshine and happiness, the next sorrow and regret, they are always beautiful, always honest. Poetry from the soul. Fresh off the road and speaking from their hometown of Concord, North Carolina, Scott and Seth Avett agreed The Carpenter feels different to them, deeper, more meaningful, more starkly reflective of their own hopes and fears, than past efforts. They are wiser now, and more clear-eyed about the fragility and finiteness of life. The writing for The Carpenter reflects the brothers' journey toward growing older and the unavoidable realities that await.

"For me, in the process between I and Love and You and this album, there have really been three years of me trying to refine a series of steps of letting go of certain things I've held on to," Scott says. "This album feels much more like a whole of refined parts that work together -- sort of like a well-oiled motor -- than records in the past did. I feel it is much more a cohesive work."

Marco Benevento - TigerfaceMarco Benevento - TigerFace CD - Over three previous studio albums, pianist/sound-sculptor/songwriter Marco Benevento has set forth a vision for instrumental music that connects the dots between Explosions In The Sky and Tortoise on one side, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau on the other.

On his fourth studio recording, 'Tigerface', the 34-year old artist takes the next step forward in this evolution. Benevento paints his songs in a myriad of sonic colors, shimmering in acoustic piano, synths and analog keyboards. The tunes themselves conceptualized from seemingly every wisp of melody, hook and cadence that's ever tickled his ear.

The album was recorded and mixed by Tom Biller (Silversun Pickups, Fiona Apple) and Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family), while Benevento invited a stellar cast of musicians to help capture his ideas, including drummers Matt Chamberlain (Bill Frisell, Pearl Jam), John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea & The Cake) and Andrew Barr (The Barr Brothers), bassists Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green) and Mike Gordon (Phish), violinist Ali Helnwein (Traction Avenue Chamber Orchestra) and saxophonist Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, Superhuman Happiness).

For the first time on record he uses vocals, inviting Kalmia Traver (Rubblebucket) to sing on the infectious dance rock rave-up 'Limbs Of A Pine' and the pastoral psych rock meditation 'This Is How It Goes'. Other standouts include the angelic Arcade Fire meets The Flaming Lips anthem 'Eagle Rock', the soaring garage psychedelia of 'Going West', the piano riff rock jaunt 'Escape Horse', and the happily lilting 'Fireworks', which bounces along like a long lost Italian folk song beamed down to him by ancestors from his father's homeland. As anybody who's seen Benevento perform live can attest, the pianist eyes closed, smile wide across his face, fingers free-flowing across the keys is a satellite to the muse. 'Tigerface', indeed, is the commitment to this idea; a record that rides the yes wave and in the process becomes a soundtrack for fellow travelers chasing the horizon ahead.

Coming Soon:

Grateful DeadGrateful Dead - Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It (2CD) - features 20 live performances hand-picked from five shows by David Lemieux, the band's archivist and the collection's producer.

Similar to 2011's Europe '72, Vol. 2, the two-disc set is a showcase for the best of the 1990 tour. The original artwork, which was created by New York artist Wes Lang (a lifelong Dead Head), showcases his elaborate drawings throughout the liner notes as well as on the cover, which features an ornate Indian skull headdress. Lemieux penned the compilation's liner notes, which provide background about the selected performances.

For those familiar with the Grateful Dead's glorious live performance history, the spring 1990 tour represents an important zenith, one fully equal to the golden ages of Europe '72 and spring '77. During this truly epic three-week spring fling, the band played as good as it ever had, with energy, sophistication and joy.

Recorded during the Grateful Dead's 25-year anniversary, the band - Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Brent Mydland, and Bob Weir - played as though it was on a mission to prove something. The pieces just fell into place that spring - impassioned vocals, the Brent/Jerry mind-meld, the MIDI expansion of the band's sonic vocabulary, and a bunch of new tunes and choice revivals.

Despite the space limitations inherent in a two-disc set, SPRING '90: SO GLAD YOU MADE IT vividly reflects the diversity of songs played during this tour. It spotlights newer material ("West L.A. Fadeaway" and "Blow Away"), classics ("Beat It On Down The Line" and "Morning Dew"), rarities ("Easy To Love You" and "Attics Of My Life"), epic jams ("Scarlet Begonias" > "Estimated Prophet"), and choice covers with Sam Cooke's "Let The Good Times Roll" and the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time."

The powerful and revealing sound heard throughout the collection is the result of work done by the band's longtime audio engineer John Cutler, who originally recorded the shows, and Jeffrey Norman, who mastered each show to HDCD specs.

Medeski Martin & Wood - Free Magic CDMedeski Martin & Wood - Free Magic CD - For its latest effort, MMW dip into their archives to present a collection of recordings documenting their first-ever acoustic tour in 2007. The set, stretching out over five expansive tracks, captures the three intrepid improvisers--keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin--exploring the telepathic hookup and deep groove sensibility that has defined MMW since its inception in 1991.

"There's a rhythmic and sonic connection that we have," says Martin of his MMW colleagues. "Listening is the most important thing for us. We're having a conversation when we're playing. The dynamic range is much greater in the acoustic setting. When we play electric, everything is turned up to 11 and it's screaming. But with John on piano and Chris on upright, we can play with a much more nuanced touch. It's a very different world, but I love it."

Free Magic opens with "Doppler," a song from MMW's previous album 20 that was issued last year in celebration of the revered trio's two decades spent as a groundbreaking force in experimental modern jazz. The tune's droning, near-tribal introduction morphs into an earthy, undulating groove that recalls the vintage piano trios of Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis and Les McCann. Medeski's "Blues for Another Day" follows with a burst of jagged dissonance that has him channeling his inner Cecil Taylor. From that tumultuous free jazz intro, the performance settles into a slow, bluesy meditation in which the pianist digs deep, testifying with gospel-tinged intensity. Up next is the epic title track that swirls amid a zen-like collective improv by the three kindred spirits on tuned metal percussion, prepared upright piano and bowed harmonics on upright bass before segueing to Medeski's Chopin-influenced "Ballade in C Minor." The fourth track selected for inclusion takes things back almost 20 years with an acoustic version of "Where's Sly" from MMW's 1993 album It's a Jungle in Here. Over the course of 16-minutes, the three musicians take great liberties with the melody and extrapolate freely in typically daring MMW fashion. The closing performance on Free Magic is a savvy piano trio medley of Charles Mingus' "Nostalgia in Times Square" and Sun Ra's anthemic "Angel Race," which work together perfectly. Wood summons up the spirit of his hero Mingus with his forceful and resonant bass solo on the "Nostalgia" half of this potent medley.

"This stuff brings it back to when we used to hang out in this rented shack in Hawaii and make music together," says Martin of the music on Free Magic. "It was really just a little plywood cabin in the jungle with a tin roof. John had a prepared piano there that sounded like a gamelan instrument and I had these funky drums that had mold growing on them, or I might play the side of the shack or play the railing going up the stairs and make it sound like a xylophone. And we'd get into a lot of different stuff there, just having musical conversations in this intimate setting."

Missing CatsMissing Cats - Larry Brown Amen CD - On Missing Cats' confident first album, 'Larry Brown Amen,' John 'Jojo' Hermann and Sherman Ewing flex their songwriting muscles and deliver a dramatic Alt/Blues/Rock collection of original songs. This is a rich CD, conceived by a pair of road warriors & friends who share a decades-long collaborative relationship.

Hermann describes the album as 'New York City meets Mississippi meets Athens, GA meets Nashville', and he's right. An array of artists dropped by the studio to lend their support to various tracks. Visitors included North Mississippi All Stars' Luther and Cody Dickenson, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, Sam Bush, Jon Randall Stewart, Anthony Krizan, Jesse Alexander and more. The renowned musicians joined in as Hermann and Ewing record their album live in Nashville over a four-day period with Grammy nominated producer Jon Randall Stewart (Emmy Lou Harris, Sam Bush, and Lyle Lovett,) capturing the energy and electricity that the songs deserved.

Ziggy Marley - Wild & Free CD

Ziggy Marley - Wild & Free CD - The overall theme of the album is a powerful one, as it propels Marley to challenge social injustice along with the political weapons of ignorance and fear. Wild and Free (Tuff Gong Worldwide), his fourth solo album, may be Ziggy's most political and personal to date. Wild and Free was produced with friend and collaborator Don Was at Ocean Way Studios in Hollywood, CA as well as Marley's own studio.

Coming Soon:

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 CDSeun Anikulapo Kuti & Egypt 80 - From Africa with Fury: Rise CD - With the mighty new From Africa With Fury: Rise, Seun Anikulapo Kuti heads up Egypt 80, the extraordinary combo first fronted by his renowned father. The album follows Kuti's critically praised debut, 2008's Many Things, which was unanimously hailed for continuing Fela's musical legacy. From Africa With Fury: Rise sees Kuti finding his own idiosyncratic voice as songwriter, singer, and band leader, its songs and sonic approach marked by provocative edge and mature self-assurance.

Co-Produced by Brian Eno, John Reynolds, and Kuti, with additional production by Godwin Logie, and mixed by John Reynolds and Tim Oliver, the album captures Seun and Egypt 80 s extraordinary power, fraught with the scorching rhythms and kinetic funk energy that has earned the band as ever, under the leadership of alto saxophonist Lekan Animashaun worldwide acclaim as one of today's most incendiary live acts. With Kuti's booming vocal stylings at the forefront, songs like 'African Soldiers' and 'Mr. Big Thief' are fueled by call-and-response hooks, breakneck tempos, and combative, topical lyricism which firmly sets the classic Egypt 80 sound in the modern era.

'I wanted to do something completely different,' Kuti says. 'Not different by trying to be American or European with my sound, just trying to make a very different album from my last album. My last album, it was my first time in control, I was not as confident as in saying what I wanted. This time, I said, Okay, I can be more confident in how I express myself, I can say what I want, be as complex as I want. '

Rubblebucket - Omega La La CDRubblebucket - Omega La La CD - On Omega La La, Rubblebucket takes a dramatic step forward with their sound, grafting their afrobeat rhythms with a creative take on dancey indie pop. Listening to the crystal-clear, minimalist production of the album, DFA veteran Eric Broucek's influence is apparent. The album opens with 'Down in the Yards,' a track that builds off the ebb and flow of a droning, two-note guitar riff, only to explode into a triumphant chorus anchored by the band's horn section. That track is followed up by the bouncy, Afro-Cuban-inspired rhythms of 'L homme,' a buoyant psych-pop gem. 'Silly Fathers'and a reworked version of 'Came Out of a Lady' show off the band's penchant for creating pop songs that stick in your head.

Tea Leaf Green - Radio Tragedy CDTea Leaf Green - Radio Tragedy! CD - More than a year in the making, Radio Tragedy! is a declaration of triumph and redemption in the face of adversity. After confronting hard times in recent years and adding new bass player Reed Mathis and 2nd drummer Cochrane McMillan, Tea Leaf Green was at a crossroads and in search of their identity. What emerged are 11 tracks showcasing the band's instrumental prowess and exceptional songwriting. With the release of Radio Tragedy!, Tea Leaf Green deliver their finest collaboration to date.

Carolina Chocolate Drops - Heritage CDCarolina Chocolate Drops - Heritage CD - Armed with banjos, fiddles, guitars, jugs, kazoos, spoons and various other percussive "instruments," in this album, the Carolina Chocolate Drops revisit the jug-band and Black string-band music of the '20s and '30s with the zest of the most energetic hip-hoppers and the acumen of old-time music pioneers. Although they remain faithful to the tradition, they have an atypical way of articulating their own artistic feelings.

Tedeshi Trucks Band - Revelator CD

Tedeschi Trucks Band - Revelator CD - Recorded in Derek and Susan's own Swamp Raga Studios in Jacksonville, co-produced by Derek with producer/engineer Jim Scott (Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco), Revelator is a confident yet unforced triumph offering a cohesive vision: an idyllic, musical world in which the echoes of so many great traditions -- Delta blues and Memphis soul, Sixties rock and Seventies funk -- flow together naturally, blending with an entirely original, modern sensibility.

"This album is an evolution of what we've all been doing before," says Trucks. "With this album, everything's been thought out a little deeper, figuring out the music and what the tunes mean--more time given to the whole process."

"These songs are all life-adventure stuff," adds Tedeschi, who co-wrote most of the album with her husband. "Whether soul-searching or love-searching, looking for shelter, or hope, or just a break...Revelator is about storytelling through songs--songs with nice musical structures, with beginnings, middles and ends, a lot of content that people can really dig into."

Blast From the Past:

Perpetual Groove - Sweet Oblivious Antidote CDPerpetual Groove - Sweet Oblivious Antidote CD - Our 2002 Studio Album of the Year! Our review: It would sell the Savannah, GA based quartet Perpetual Groove a little short to encapsulate their music with a catch phrase. Mercifully, the ebullient group has provided listeners with a perfect verbal synopsis of their sound with the title of their debut album Sweet Oblivious Antidote. Even the album's artwork provides a glimpse into P-Groove's eclectic attitude. The outside is done in the style of an antique medicine bottle and below the disc tray is a grainy grocery-bag colored photo of the band, but the liner notes are decidedly futuristic. This all-inclusive vibe is evident from the first track, "Three Weeks", which rides a genuine rock-ballad groove before launching upwards into the electronic skyline. The lyrics are desperate but hopeful. Yin and Yang prevail.

Focusing on creating a singular sound rather than blatantly showcasing their obvious individual talent, P-Groove molds the overwhelmingly happy tones of their music into various shapes. Thankfully, their sweetly optimistic outlook avoids the realm of the corny. They coax a huge sound from their utilitarian guitar/bass/keys/drums setup, stoking a universal psychedelic fire that lately seemed to be fizzling. There's sun-drenched, barefoot bounce-rock that actually springs from group effort instead of the well-tested verse-solo-verse format. Sections of trance-like intent grow from what seems like trial and error repetition. They also demonstrate the ability to garnish their less frenetic material with enough dynamic pulse and lyrical structure to give it an epic feel. This music succeeds because the band can weave ideas around each other in countless ways. The album pulls the listener in at a steady pace, never jarring the ear but gently persuading it with subtle melodic shifts ("Perihelion"), nifty multi-sectional compositions ("Sundog"), and instantly familiar hooks ("TSM2"). Buoyed by vocals that are actually relevant and pleasing, Sweet Oblivious Antidote glides further into the endless groove with sublime tunes like "Teakwood Betz" and the Flecktones-sounding "Astromonkey". "Astromonkey" bursts into musical permagrin with a percussive, island-hopping climax and giant rock-and-roll ending. The title track brings the album to a fitting close with dense vocal harmonies, sparkling mid-tempo roots rock, and a soaring, dramatic ending. With this album, Perpetual Groove offers soothing relief for the aching muscles of jam-rock. - Bryan Rodgers

Released in 2002. On sale this week for $9.99!

Zero - Absolute Zero CD Zero - Absolute Zero CD - The first ZERO recording, never released until now; it was the inception of the band's instrumental repertoire. The studio album was recorded in the early eighties and performed by Zero's founding members: Steve Kimock; guitar and bass; Greg Anton: drums and piano. Remastered by Brian Risner in 2011, the high-fidelity studio recording was the starting point for what was to become one of San Francisco's premier improvisational jazz/rock bands.

"The band revolves around two remarkable musicians; guitarist Steve Kimock and drummer Greg Anton, composers of the band's music and the sparkplugs driving the band's improvisational rock." ~ Joel Selvin, San Francisco Chronicle

The Mix - Live CDThe Mix - Live CD - John Kadlecik (Further), Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), Jeff Pevar (Ray Charles/CS&N), Kevin Rosen (Dark Star Orchestra), Greg Anton (Zero)...got together in 2003 and toured the country, writing songs and rocking out. This live compilation, recorded from San Francisco to Albuquerque, features original songs written by the band and extended guitar and organ jams from some of the best players on the rock and roll circuit in America.

GalacticGalactic - Another Side of Midnight: Live in New Orleans CD - As a follow-up to what may be the definitive New Orleans tribute album, Galactic present a live album that is both a continuation of the diverse musical worlds they explored on YA KAMAY, and a searing document from one of the great live bands of our time. Recorded at the legendary New Orleans club Tipitina s with a host of guests - some like Big Freedia carrying over from YA KA MAY, others like Cyril Neville and Trombone Shorty new to the crew The Other Side of Midnight: Live in New Orleans is an important summation of a band and its intense relationship with its fabled hometown. Only in New Orleans could a night this funky, sweaty and wild also be so profound.

BeatleJamBeatleJam - Live at the Keswick Theatre CD - UK pressing of this live album from the jam band supergroup consisting of Matt Abs (Govt Mule), Berry Oakley (Allman Brothers), Vince Welnick (Grateful Dead), Slick Aguilar (Jefferson Starship) and Johnny Neel (Govt Mule, Allman Brothers, Lonny Mack). Beatlejam are a sort of spin off from the successful US jam band Blue Floyd only this time its Beatles songs rather than the Pink Floyd, given the unique jam spin.

Zigaboo Modeliste - New Life CDZigaboo Modeliste - New Life CD - Legendary drummer Zigaboo Modeliste releases his 4th solo album on his label JZM Records entitled New Life. With elements of rock, funk, and blues on a timeless R&B base, this record features the iconic drumming and celebratory songwriting style of Zigaboo and his hometown of New Orleans. It also incorporates the talents of several music icons including legendary arranger Wardell Quezerque, saxophonist Norbert Stachel, and trumpeter Mic Gillet of Tower of Power fame.

A key ingredient in the outstanding flavor of New Life is the musical rapport these truly skilled artists created with Zigaboo. Musicians from both New Orleans and the San Francisco Bay Area came together to create a fun, upbeat album that is a notable addition to the New Orleans musical tradition. Included in the star-studded lineup is guitarist Shane Theriot (Neville Brothers, Madeleine Peyroux), master percussionist Bill Summers (Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder), keyboardist Eamonn Flynn (The Commitments), and organist Joe Krown (Gatemouth Brown).

Eric Lindell - Cazadero CDRandall Bramblett & Geoff Achison - Jammin in the Attic CD - Every once in a while lightening strikes and, if you get lucky, it gets captured! That's what happened on 6/13/10 when this live performance at the legendary Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA was recorded. This CD is a wonderful example of what can happen when two great musicians and songwriters join forces. The dynamic duo alternate between Randall's songs and Geoff's original tunes, and the result is greater than the sum of the parts. Check out how Achison's sensitive accompaniment enhances Bramblett's "Nobody's Problem" or how Randall's sax perfectly complements Geoff's "Rule the World." Oliver Wood of King Johnson adds scorching electric guitar licks to tunes like Achison's "Jungle" and Bramblett's "Get In Get Out," proving that with musicians of this caliber, more is definitely merrier! They are joined by: Yonrico Scott - drums, Ted Pecchio - bass, Oliver Wood - electric guitar

Cowyboy Reunion 2010 CDBoyer & Talton - Cowboy Reunion 2010 CD - Cowboy is one of those bands that brings back strong memories of the 70s heyday of Capricorn Records. From playing on Gregg Allman's classic Laid Back and the follow-up live CD, The Gregg Allman Tour to creating masterpieces like "Please Be With Me," "Time Will Take Us,"and "All My Friends," they defined the laid-back, country soul of that time and place. Cowboy influenced everyone from Eric Clapton and Bonnie Bramblett to the Marshall Tucker Band, and the Southern Rock movement wouldn't have been the same without them. They not only recorded four albums for Capricorn, they also played on numerous other releases for other artists on the label. With all of their original Capricorn albums out of print, for many years Cowboy fans had nothing but memories of the original band and their scratchy old vinyl LPs to remind them of this underrated supergroup. However, on December 17th, 2010, that all changed when Cowboy played their first show in years at the Capitol Theater in Macon, Georgia. It was an extraordinary night full of love and laughter and memories with this wonderful band as they played at a level that few achieve. The set list flowed from one hit into the next and the playing and singing was heartfelt and passionate - as homecomings should be. Cowboy Reunion 2010 features great playing, great harmony vocals, and one of the most impressive songwriting catalogs of any band around. Trust us when we say that no Cowboy fan should be without this disc!
