New Releases

Taj Weekes & AdowaTaj Weekes & Adowa - Pariah in Transit (Live) CD - Pariah in Transit is the first live album from internationally acclaimed roots reggae group Taj Weekes & Adowa. The album, the band's fourth CD is a masterfully produced compilation of live performances. This soulfully delicious blend of organic, rich, roots reggae rhythms defines this band as one of the best in music today. Proceeds from the sale of Pariah in Transit will be donated to charity.

John MedeskiJohn Medeski - A Different Time CD - Keyboard master John Medeski thrives on the unpredictable, a trait that has kept his work with the trailblazing trio Medeski Martin & Wood (MMW) fresh and surprising for more than twenty years. With A Different Time, his first solo piano project, Medeski once again takes his sound in a completely unexpected direction. A Different Time is a far more introspective, meditative collection than fans of MMW's lively, groove-driven music might expect. Consisting mainly of his own compositions and improvisations, A Different Time presents a different side of Medeski's prodigious artistry. "I had a more eclectic record in mind," says Medeski. "I wanted to put out something that would be more representative of what my live solo concerts are like. The whole point is to get lost in the music."

Quicksilver Messenger ServiceQuicksilver Messenger Service - Live at the Fillmore June 7, 1968 (2 CDs) - Collector's edition 2CD digipak of psychedelic supergroup Quicksilver Messenger Service performing live in front of the Fillmore audience!
Classic line-up featuring the twin guitar attack of Gary Duncan and John Cipollina tearing through the band's best songs including Pride Of Man, Acapulco Gold & Silver, and Light Your Windows PLUS blues classics Who Do You Love?, Mona and more!
Packaged with detailed liner notes and rare photos!

JJ Grey & Mofro DVDJJ Grey & Mofro - Brighter Days DVD - Directed by filmmaker/musician Spookie Daly, the film intersperses riveting concert footage with the stunning beauty of Grey's north Florida home, the inspiration for so much of his music. The film also follows Grey and company into the studio and features band interviews along with insightful commentary from Grey and others, recalling the format of classic "rockumentaries."

Les RacquetLes Racquet - Whale Hail CD - Les Racquet is an indie rock power trio with three-part vocal harmonies and virtuosic musicianship. This album was recorded as a retrospective representation of the first year as a touring band, from the gypsy life style and living out of a suitcase, to the serene moments that remind us of our humanistic spirituality, and for all the celebrations and hardships. For that, we stand up and proclaim, "Whale Hail!"

John Brown's BodyJohn Brown's Body - Kings and Queens CD - Kings And Queens is the band's most ambitious release to date, encompassing the entire history of the band's sound and legacy. Lead vocalist Elliot Martin reaches new levels of songwriting by striking the fine balance between classic JBB roots and a fresh new JBB sound. The album features songs that are dripping in their signature Future Roots sound influenced by British Reggae (Aswad, Steel Pulse), roots classics (Burning Spear, Alpha Blondy), dub experimentation (Scientist, King Tubby, Sly & Robbie), and modern Electronica. The results are a thicker, heavier style than most modern Reggae.

JJ Grey & MofroJJ Grey & Mofro - The River CD - This River is chock-full of vibrant characters and compelling stories set to Stax-worthy soul, greasy Southern rock and funk and glorious ballads that stay with you long after the last notes fade. Gutsy vocals, rugged horns and muscular grooves come together to create a down-home musical celebration.

Greyboy AllstarsThe Greyboy Allstars - Inland Emperor CD - The fourth album from the San Diego-based Funk/Jazz/Boogaloo group and their first in six years. Recorded at Elgonix Sound labs and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Mickey Petralia (Beck, Peached, Eels, Flight of the Conchords) the album is a mixture of influences from the five very distinct members of the group. Featuring: Karl Denson, Robert Walter, Chris Stillwell, Zak Najor & Elgin Park.

The Flaming LipsThe Flaming Lips - The Terror CD -The Terror was produced by the band s long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and The Flaming Lips at Tarbox Road Studios. It is comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works, along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect but then again, maybe not. It s up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you.

Hackensaw Boys - For the Love of a FriendHackensaw Boys - For the Love of a Friend CD - Kinderdijk, Netherlands - On February 15th, 2012, Rene Verkerk was killed while working on the scoop-wheel of his number six windmill. In the weeks following his death, friends and family gathered round and found the Hackensaw Boys were a mutual passion and comfort. Rene was a huge fan of theirs and permeated most of his relationships with their music. In March 2012, Rene's friends contacted the band and asked if they would play in celebration of their fallen brother. The Hackensaw Boys proudly accepted.

On May 24th, 2012, over 200 friends gathered in Cafe De Klok, the local pub, for Rene's celebration. From this memorial show, comes Hackensaw Boys - For the Love of a Friend, a 16 track CD including Keep It Simple and Can't Catch Me, along with a 35 minute bonus DVD documenting the story, as well as the show.

Sam Holt BandSam Holt Band - Southern Angels CD - Southern Angels, contains Holt’s most honest and accomplished songs to date. The album features guest appearances from Widespread Panic’s John Bell and Danny Hutchens of Bloodkin. The emotional honesty in the lyrics came from experiencing the bittersweet nature of life. “Many events and emotions in the song ‘Southern Angels’ are from my time with Widespread Panic. Having John Bell on this tune is an honor, but also makes perfect sense,” he states.

Sam is known for his on stage appearances with Widespread Panic and his national touring band Outformation. Sam Holt Band formed in late 2011 after Holt relocated to Colorado. “I’m so lucky to have these guys in the band. Everyone is a great player, and we listen to each other,” says the transplanted Southerner.

With a national touring schedule falling into place and a new record, Sam Holt Band is ready to take their music to the masses. “The journey is the thing, and I’m excited to be on it with these guys,” Holt declares.

Whitewater Ramble - Roots & GrooveWhitewater Ramble - Roots & Groove CD - The band has welcomed back Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth as producer for the second time. Carbone worked with the band on their genre-bending debut release All Night Drive in 2010.

The band will celebrate the release with an intimate listening party at Avogadro's Number in Ft. Collins on 3/26/13 sponsored by KRFC 88.9 FM. The album will play in it's entirety and the band will perform several stripped down tunes including the new single "Mr. Banker Man." In March and April, the band will strike out on a Roots & Groove tour across Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, California and Wyoming including a special Colorado release show at Wildflower Pavilion on 3/29/13. Full tour dates will be announced soon.

"This release marks significant growth as a band from our debut album to our sophomore release," says Patrick Sites (mandolin, vocals). "Everything from songwriting, to vocal and harmonies to instrumentation have taken major leaps ahead. All Night Drive was a lot of jams, hype, fast tempos, but lacking on the song side of things. We've now settled into a blend of what we call "Roots & Groove." Our roots in bluegrass and Americana are still very strong and we really have some meaningful songs with messages and things we believe and feel, but the grooves are also a key element of these songs and necessary to keep feet moving and the dance party aspect, it's a great blend. 2013 will be the biggest and best year this band has seen, with a management team behind us and new and mature record to put in people's hands, the band is poised and ready to make the leap into the national festival scene."

New Releases:

New MastersoundsThe New Mastersounds - Breaks from the Border CD - The New Mastersounds release their first ever US recorded album, "Breaks From The Border". "Breaks" marks a new era in the band's sonic landscape by topping their unique syncopated grooves with group vocal stylings. Their new sound has been band tested, fan approved. After a major US festival tour, instead of flying home to England, they diverted to Texas, where they recorded at Sonic Ranch. Sonic Ranch is a residential studio in the middle of a huge pecan orchard, which became the setting for the band s seventh studio album, "Breaks from the Border".

Pimps of Joytime - Janxta FunkPimps of Joytime - Janxta Funk CD - Over the course of the past four years, the Pimps of Joytime have evolved into a road tested and audience approved groove machine. They have excited crowds at over 100 club dates and festivals in 2010 and this year's ongoing "All The Way Live" tour far exceeds the volume of previous years. Amazingly, their stage performance improves each night as the electricity between the band members rises to new heights. This fluidity is not something you can manufacture; it is an authentic and exciting collaboration that is the Pimps of Joytime. With the "All The Way Live" tour, The Pimps are offering their fans and music lovers alike a chance to experience the electrifying rhythms that lace the album, Janxta Funk!

Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, the Pimps of Joytime are paving their own unique path in the world. What do you do when there isn't a phrase to describe your sound? You coin a new one of course! Janxta Funk, as Brian J describes it "is a style that is part gangsta, part janky". Janxta Funk ranges from Latin inspired rhythms to deep funky grooves and hot dance beats. Those who have experienced a Pimps show agree that you have to see the band live to truly understand their unique combination of musical elements, including afrobeat, rock, hip-hop and electronica. The exponential growth of the band's fan base is attributed to their artful blend of musical styles framed by bandleader Brian J's classic songwriting along with the band's undeniable swagger on stage. Their live synergy consistently inspires dance parties wherever the band appears!

Brian J is a charismatic and soulful visionary, whose well-crafted songs invite the listener to enter a world of infectious dance grooves and indelible melodies. He spent his formative years in New York City, New Orleans and Los Angeles, honing his craft to become an accomplished live performer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He is joined by the lady of rhythm and soul, Mayteana Morales. Fans lose themselves in her beats and are captivated by her distinct voice. Completing the front line is Chauncey Yearwood who adds funky flavor to every song with tasty conga grooves and his classically soulful voice. Filling out the rhythm section is super talent David Bailis on bass and synth and rotating cast of top notch drummers.

In 2005 Brian assembled this group of righteously soulful vocalists and musicians to bring to life the musical concept that would become The Pimps of Joytime. The band's diverse sound and spirited attitude is strongly influenced by the Brooklyn DJ culture and live music scene from which they emerge. The new album Janxta Funk! features collaborations with legendary artists Cyril and Art Neville of the Neville Brothers and Roy Ayers have helped vitalize the band's connection to its roots.

The Pimps of Joytime are poised to bring their audacious sound to savvy audiences around the planet. Janxta Funk! is a new chapter in the book of the Funk and a testament that real funky music is alive and kicking!

Coming Soon:

Moksha - Here to Go CDMoksha - Here to Go CD - Las Vegas rock outfit Moksha, who finds a common musical stance with bands like Phish, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead, among others, release their second album. "Here to Go" was produced independently by Moksha Music Limited and four-time Grammy Award winner James 'Bonzai' Caruso, with Peter Apfelbaum doing the horn arrangements.

"Here to Go' is Moksha's first endeavor with new band member, Sam Lemos as lead vocal, adding another level to Moksha's mastery of instrumental jam music. It fuses all the musical genres that influence each of the band members, into a sound uniquely their own.

"Starswarm", "Here to Go" and "Bubbles" Take a rocket blast, straight into a deep space, psychedelic funk, rock utopia, back down to earth with melodic pop, and back again into hyperspace with a rip-roaring instrumental.

"Real Show", "Into Thin Air", and "Fruit of Tulum", stay closer to earth with Reggae, World Music, and Spanish Instrumentals, that keeps the energy moving and the horns and vocals shining. "Leg up" is a sweet melodic country inspired ballad. The cornerstone of the album

"The Measure of all things" is a beautiful and mercurial song that delves into the depths of the mythic realm and the heights of keyboard solo heaven.

The remaining songs switch between explosive funk with soaring vocals and classic horns, to good solid rock that pushes until it eventually comes apart at the seams

With their music circling the world, then to space and back, Moksha is "Here to Go"

Drive By Truckers Greatest Hits CDDrive-By Truckers - Ugly Buildings, Whores & Politicians: Greatest Hits 1998-2009 CD - The first ever 'best of' collection from the acclaimed band led by Patterson Hood. Wood Brothers - Smoke Ring Halo CDThe Wood Brothers - Smoke Ring Halo CD - Brothers Chris and Oliver Wood s divergent musical paths crossed in 2004, when at a family gathering the brothers decided to play and record their own material. While sibling collaborations are not out of the ordinary, the fact that Chris and Oliver pursued separate projects for some 15 years before joining forces makes for an unusual story.

Oliver Wood (guitar, vocals) moved to Atlanta, honed his instrumental and vocal chops and formed one of the Southeast s most popular rock/blues bands, King Johnson. His younger brother Chris Wood (bass, vocals, harmonica) moved to New York City, immersed himself in the City s jazz/improve scene and formed the internationally acclaimed, genre busting trio Medeski Martin & Wood.

2011 will mark the release of THE WOOD BROTHERS THIRD FULL-LENGTH STUDIO ALBUM, SMOKE RING HALO, to be released by Zac Brown s Southern Ground Artists. It was produced by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chilli Peppers) and features backing vocals from Zac Brown and Clay Cook.

Video of the Week:

Taj Weekes & Adowa - Janjaweed "Janjaweed" is being released to commemorate the independence of the Republic of South Sudan. The realization of this historic day is a testament to the tireless efforts of the people of South Sudan in their search for peace. However, widespread violence against civilians continues in several regions in Sudan, threatening to undermine a fragile peace.

This video touches on the horror and violence the people of South Sudan and Eastern Chad have endured for decades at the hands of the janjaweed, nomadic Arabic gunmen or so called "devils who ride on horseback."

This animated video only hints at the gruesome story that lies behind the name but presents the issue so that those who want to know more may seek it out themselves. For many, this song and video will be the first time they will hear of the janjaweed and the devastation they have been perpetrating in Africa for nearly a decade.

Thanks for reading! Treat yourself to some good music this week.

Taj Weekes & Adowa - A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen CDTaj Weekes & Adowa - A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen CD -Taj Weekes and Adowa's third CD, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen, ushers in a deluge of fresh reggae songs laced with acoustic strings, bluesy harmonica accents and a deep sax groove. Continuing in the classic roots reggae tradition of singer as town crier, songs recall images of many of the world's recent tragic events - from the oil spill in "Drill" to a decade's worth of news headlines in "Anthems of Hope." Still hope prevails with the easy flowing rhythms, elements of afro-folk simplicity and Weekes' trademark soothing raspy edged voice harmonizing with the smooth female backing vocals.

Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Almost Acoustic CDJerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Almost Acoustic CD -Almost Acoustic presents a sprightly selection of performances recorded during shows at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles and The Warfield in San Francisco. The album's 14 tracks include tunes popularized by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers ("Blue Yodel #9 [Standin' On The Corner]"), Tex Logan ("Diamond Joe"), and Mississippi John Hurt ("Spike Driver Blues.") Also featured is "Ripple," which was written by Garcia and longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Ragged But Right CDJerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Ragged But Right CD - The beloved group is spotlighted with a newly remastered version of 1988's long out-of-print Almost Acoustic, the sextet's sole release, and the much awaited arrival of its sequel, Ragged But Right.

Option 22 - Choose the Music CD Option 22 - Choose the Music CD - Option 22 is a progressive Americana/Worldbeat ensemble with a revolutionary vibe. Fierce and passionate female vocals dance atop a healing groove of instruments from around the world including banjo, guitars, didgeridoo, shamisen, djembes and other hand drums. Positive lyrics convey a message of unity and understanding and soulful melodies elevate listeners' consciousness. Dubbed by one listener a "new age jam band," their flavorful style is flexible, ranging from funky and rhythmic sounds to mellow and melodic, with each member bringing into the equation affinities for worldbeat, funk, folk, jamband music, newgrass, trance, reggae and rock. The music has no boundries, and one must listen to the full scope of it to understand, as each song is different. Their full-out drum jams send energy bouncing off the walls of any venue. Another listener dubbed the sound "hippie hop." The only category that truly seems fitting is "Other." With three albums of original music, their newest release, "Choose The Music," is available now. It features 12 Original Songs spanning styles from newgrass to space-folk to alterna-rock world funk. No matter what you call it, it's good music.

Skatalites - Bashaka CDSkatalites - Bashaka CD - Formed in 1963, the Skatalites were the creme de la creme of Jamaica's musical talent at the time. Their music was a powerful synthesis of American R&B, combined with swinging, jazzy "take off" solos, forming in the process something uniquely Jamaican - the first music to come out of the post-war colonial independence movement of the West Indies. The Skatalites backed every singer of note in the island's studios and cut hundreds of instrumentals under various names, thus laying the foundation for today's Jamaican music. 'Bashaka' is a celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Skatalites formation. The music found here is smooth, swinging and vibrant. Producer Stamma Haughton has a first hand feel for the music of the original Skatalites and the combination of solid tunes, musical craftmanship, digital recording at a big studio makes this an album every ska fan should check out. Bargain priced at $3.99!

Taj Weekes and Adowa - Deidem CD - Taj Weekes' music is more than just entertainment. The St. Lucia born, bred and based roots reggae artist's music stirs thought, provokes discussion and inspires people to think for themselves, free from the constraints of the corporate media. On his beautiful new album Deidem, released on his own independent label, Jatta Records, Weekes sings assuredly and soulfully for the voiceless and the oppressed, taking his music to a new level of commitment and universal appeal. For those who have been disadvantaged, abandoned or just alienated by a power structure that values profit over people and fear over hope, Deidem speaks for them in its refusal to forget those left out of the new "global economy" and in his continued belief in what is possible through authentic music and real communication. $12.00  Check out our video of the week below, which is a look at the making of this album.

The Giving Tree Band - Unified Folk Theory (2 CDs) - The Giving Tree Band's 2007 double-disc set was manufactured in the most environmentally friendly process currently available, at a wind-powered studio using recycled materials and nontoxic soy ink printing. The Giving Tree Band is a four-piece group of versatile Chicago-area musicians. The band's eclectic and unique brand of soulful folk is the collaboration of four friendly multi-instrumentalists. Their sound is all acoustic, expanding from a variety of folk and roots traditions. The band has a very natural yet inventive approach to songwriting and music-making, which they use as a tool for investigating the mystery of life and understanding the human condition. These troubadours have creatively chronicled their own experiences, random thoughts, and deep feelings into a musical diary. By opening it freely, they hope to bring a little joy and inspiration to the lives of the listeners. $18.99

Turbo Pro Project - Daydream CD - It's banjo-hip-hop-fusion music! When a band lists Earl Scruggs, Bela Fleck, Grandmaster Flash, and Rakim as their most powerful influences, you know you're in for something different! A banjo player and a DJ seem to be unlikely candidates to be playing music together, let alone in the same band, but they are indeed part of the personnel in the Turbo Pro Project, a group headed by banjoist Adrian "Turbo" Trbovich and supported by DJ Chris "DJ Pro" Prear. Adrian has played all over the country sharing his unique approach to the banjo, from festivals to smoky bar rooms. Among these numerous venues, Adrian has repeatedly been a musical artist at the prestigious Merlefest, the premiere festival for Americana music. DJ Pro has guest DJ'd for stars like Biggie Smalls, Method Man and Redman, Chico Brown, and Little Vicious. The Turbo Pro Project puts all stereotypes aside to take a musical journey that knows no bounds. $11.99

Moly - Post Crisis Reflection Agenda CD - Post Crisis Reflection Agenda ushers Moly's cinematic instrumental sound into the future. With more sounds and textures than any of their previous releases, this album has a dark edge that is shot through with sweeping emotion. The UK duo coaxes some truly human tones out of their computers, creating a moody blend of thought-provoking melodies and mind-expanding beats. "Achingly beautiful landscapes of sound swathed in white noise" and "heart-soaringly, mind-expandingly lush and subtly lovely" are some of the things that have been said about this unique duo. $16.00

Zappa Plays Zappa - 2 DVD set or Deluxe 5-disc set - In 2006, two Zappa Plays Zappa shows were pristinely filmed and recorded (in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA, respectively) to capture the experience. The Zappa Plays Zappa DVD collection brilliantly commemorates the critically-acclaimed concerts, which presented a collection of Frank Zappa's rock-oriented compositions from the 1960s through the 1980s. Zappa Plays Zappa is a tour de force of rock guitar virtuosity and a guitarist's dream come true. Featuring Dweezil Zappa on lead guitar and the precision virtuoso instrumentalists Terry Bozzio and Steve Vai, plus a dash of Frank Zappa's social commentary and wit, ZPZ is a document like no other! Also featured are a mix of musicians who previously played with Frank Zappa including original Mothers of Invention member Napoleon Murphy Brock (sax, flute, vocals)! In addition, Frank Zappa himself performs posthumously via synchronized audio/video technology, including the solos in "Chunga's Revenge." The Deluxe 5-Disc Set includes the 2 concert DVDs plus the entire program on 2 CDs, and a bonus 3rd CD including tracks not available on the DVDs. 2-DVD Set $23.99; Deluxe 5-Disc Set $35.99

Global Noize CD - Featuring DJ Logic, Karl Denson, Billy Martin, John Popper, Bernie Worrell, Cyro Baptista, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Jason Miles, Herb Alpert, and others! Produced by DJ Logic (world-wide DJ superstar) and Jason Miles (noted for his work with Miles Davis), Global Noize is a ground-breaking jazz/funk/world fusion project that mixes Logic's turntable wizardry with irresistible funk grooves, impressive jazz solos, and vocal textures from around the world. $18.98

The Roots - Rising Down CD/LP - Garnering critical praise throughout their career, The Roots have firmly established themselves as a band with uncompromised artistic control and integrity. With Rising Down, the band's 10th album release, The Roots continue to take bolder steps adding new depths and range to their repertoire. The political nature of Rising Down is not only heard within the music - the release date falls on the 16th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots sparked by the acquittal of the police officers accused of beating Rodney King. Standout tracks include "Criminal," a reflection of life on the streets and unjust persecution, "I Will Not Apologize" a tribute to Fela Kuti that discusses keeping dignity in the music biz, and "I Can't Help It," a look at addictions and urges that compel us all. The pop-infused "Birthday Girl" features Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump, and additional guests include Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and more.  CD $16.99; LP Vinyl $15.99

Jamie Lidell - Jim CD - Recorded in Berlin, Los Angeles and Paris, Jim takes Jamie Lidell's inspiration even further, finding the balance between the spontaneous creativity of his raw ideas and the careful craft and polish of a great record. Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It s a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of hillbilly funk. "I haven't tried to hide the influences," says Lidell. "This is the music I love." Listen closely and you can hear Jamie moving in new directions, creating a sound and style that is entirely his own. $13.99

Bombadil - A Buzz, A Buzz CD - The music of Bombadil, a band of North Carolinians who met by chance in Bolivia, draws on a unique melange of influences to create an infectious, unclassifiable sound. They are truly one of the freshest bands to emerge in some time, with songs that range from straightforward rock to Bolivian waltzes and heartbreaking, piano-driven laments to swashbuckling, raucous marches. With an array of instrumentation encompassing guitar, piano, harmonica, glockenspiel, and everything in between, their live show is unlike anything else. Still, the core of Bombadil is their anthemic, concrete songwriting. It's what allows them to carry a room, whether there are one hundred instruments on stage or just a single guitar and voice. It's what people connect to and why they keep coming back. $12.99

Portishead - Third CD - Portishead's third CD picks up right where the Bristol, England trip-hoppers left the rest of the world over ten years ago. As far as music has come in the space between Portishead albums, they prove that they can still trip out and mesmerize with the best on this one. Third is not as beat-heavy as their older work, leaving more empty space for their floaty, breathless compositions to shimmer and simmer. $16.99

Pete Francis - Iron Sea & The Cavalry CD - Pete Francis' new record Iron Sea and the Cavalry belongs in a classic jukebox that holds only your favorite records. From the pulsing single ''Shooting Star and the Ambulance,'' to the dreamy ''Heavenly Boat,'' to the sweet and familiar title track, Iron Sea and the Cavalry represents the work of a true craftsman. Francis spent years as a member of the renowned independent band Dispatch. $12.99

Vinyl Additions:

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Vinyl LP  - Inevitably, when critics praise a new Dylan album, they label it the "best since Blood on the Tracks," and with good reason. Inspired by a crumbled marriage, and recorded after a tour with the Band had apparently re-ignited his creativity, Blood is among Dylan's masterpieces. The album's epic songs are well known, but its real high points are the shorter numbers--"You're a Big Girl Now," the flawless blues "Meet Me in the Morning," and the sweetly devastating "Buckets of Rain." These are songs of "images and distorted facts," each expressed through tangled points of view, and all of them blue.  $16.99

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters Vinyl LP  Keyboardist Herbie Hancock's remarkable career took a surprising turn with this funk album--one of the first jazz albums to be certified gold. Hancock's already-storied career had included an extended tenure with Miles Davis as a member of both the classic quintet of the '60s and the trumpeter's groundbreaking electric dates. As a leader, the pianist had followed a similar course, cutting both outstanding acoustic dates and experimental electric sessions. Head Hunters, however, was something different: a stripped-down date featuring reedman Bennie Maupin as the only horn player, and a funk-oriented rhythm section made up of Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Hancock traded in his sophisticated piano performances for slow-burn funk grooves and light electric keyboard splashes. The results had a profound impact on other musicians that cannot be measured.  $16.99

Classic DVD Additions:

The Police - Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out DVD  - Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out, the directorial debut of five-time Grammy Award-winning composer and drummer Stewart Copeland, is a first-person account of The Police's ascent from obscurity to worldwide fame as well as an astute and sometimes hilarious commentary on the pop culture of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Culled from over 50 hours of Super 8 movies he shot during the acclaimed trio's heyday, the film offers an insider's perspective on touring, the other band members and the adoring fans that puts the audience in the drummer's seat. Copeland's kinetic and artful camerawork forms a visual ode to the rhythm of the road: a surreal swirl of hotel rooms, bus rides, press conferences and record signings punctuated by nightly flashes of electrifying on-stage exhilaration. Copeland's breezy narration and onscreen annotations provide a wry, sometimes self-mocking perspective on the group's high jinks, from a lip-syncing session on skis for an early music video to their later travels throughout the Third World. Edited with a percussionist's precision timing and a composer's ear for the inherent pulse of each scene, Copeland scores the film using a pastiche of de-constructed studio and live versions of The Police's extensive and memorable repertoire.  $14.99

Roger Waters - The Wall: Live in Berlin DVD  - The Wall (Live in Berlin) might be from 1990 but it looks and sounds terrifically compelling on DVD, thanks to its vivid image quality and greatly improved audio mixes. The freshly mineswept Potsdamer platz - a once-thriving plaza destroyed by Allied bombing in 1943 - proved the perfect place to mark the opening of the Berlin Wall with an all-star production of Pink Floyd's magnum opus: a Wall for a wall. An unlikely assemblage of musicians augments Roger Waters's impressive house band, with everyone from the Scorpions to Joni Mitchell to the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army getting in on the rock-opera action. Cyndi Lauper, Bryan Adams, James Galway, Tim Curry, Marianne Faithfull, Van Morrison, The Band, Thomas Dolby, and Albert Finney all turn in tasty cameos. The documentary is thorough and juicy, and producer Tony Hollingsworth offers an above-par essay in the booklet. Recorded July 21, 1990.  $14.99

Jimi Hendrix - Jimi Plays Berkeley DVD  - Jimi Plays Berkeley is great. Why? Because of Hendrix's flawless performance with Mitch Mitchell on drums and Billy Cox on bass. The band never sounded better live, and Eddie Kramer's 5.1 surround remix on the DVD really lifts the sound to a new level. Tracks include "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "Star Spangled Banner," "Hey Joe," "I Don't Live Today," "Machine Gun," and many others. This is a never-to-be-forgotten musical experience you will enjoy over and over again. In addition, the DVD includes the entire audio recording of Jimi Plays Berkeley: 2nd Set, arguably Hendrix's best live performance ever recorded. It's just perfect. $14.99

Taj Weekes & Adowa

Taj Weekes' music is more than just entertainment. The roots reggae artist's music stirs thought, provokes discussion and inspires people to think for themselves, free from the constraints of the corporate media.

Taj Weekes is an enigma… on the one hand deeply serious and intensely passionate about his worldviews and on the other hand a gentle and humble man with a quick and easy smile. Driven to inspire conscious thought and provoke discussion through his poignant poetry and lyrics, Weekes says, "I write from the heart and I speak about issues that move me. I believe that’s what really matters."

Born and raised on the island of St. Lucia, Weekes grew up the youngest of ten children in a family where music was ever present. "We were always singing and playing in my house. My father was an incredible singer... we took that from him." By age five, Weekes was singing in church and by the age of nine, he and his brothers had formed a band, playing in local talent shows, the town hall or parish centers around the island.

Weekes would painstakingly write down the lyrics from songs he heard, often tinkering with the words in a song to make them his own creation. "From the time I started writing," he said, "I did my own thing. I was always attracted to the lyrics in the songs and would listen to people like Lord Kitchener and the Mighty Sparrow. They were like town criers telling the stories of the day. Reggae is what you call the poor man's cry. It's music you can sit and listen to. It's listening music."

Weekes grew up blissfully unaware of category or genre - to him, great music was, and still is, great music no matter what the style. "My musical influences were quite varied, 'cause the radio stations played all kinds of music. There were no formats, so we grew up listening to everything from reggae to calypso to classic rock and classical music."

Weekes soon felt confined by the borders of St. Lucia and left home to fulfill his musical ambitions in North America. There he formed his band Taj Weekes and Adowa and label Jatta Records. Weekes and his band Adowa unite a true social consciousness with an unforgettable reggae groove. Blending in elements of acoustic roots rock and afro-folk simplicity, the band’s vibrant sound has garnered critical acclaim and a wide audience across the globe.

Taj Weekes and Adowa released their much-anticipated third CD, A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen, in October 2010. Their stunning new release presents a set of fresh reggae songs laced with acoustic strings, guitar, violin and cello, and splashes of soulful harmonica for an album that challenges listeners to redefine common perceptions of reggae and where it's heading as a genre. The group's first two full-length albums are Hope and Doubt and Deidem, which won "Best Reggae Album" at the Just Plain Folks Music Awards and was shortlisted for a Grammy Award.

Always striving to bring awareness to the issues he is passionate about, Weekes founded his charity, They Often Cry Outreach (TOCO), in 2007 to improve the lives of underprivileged children in the Caribbean through sports, health and enrichment programs.

Named a Goodwill Ambassador by the International Consortium of Caribbean Professionals and recognized by a division of the United Nations, Weekes addresses issues such as global warming, casualties of war, domestic and youth violence, diabetes and health, poverty and the welfare of children through both his music and his charity.
