HGMN Staff's Favorites of 2012:

LEE:
Favorite shows: BIG Something Costume Ball 10/27/2012 - Lincoln Theatre - Raleigh, NC.  I saw this band more than any other in 2012 and this performance was one of the many highlights. Their set had an outer space theme. The band was wearing astronaut suits, stage was decorated like a spaceship, visuals and audio samples all played on the theme throughout the show. They busted out new covers to complement the theme like Intergalactic (Beastie Boys), Robot Rock (Daft Punk), Cosmic Girl (Jamiroquai) & Subterranean Homesick Alien (Radiohead).  Hear a recording here: http://archive.org/details/bs2012-10-27.bryonsos

Everyone Orchestra @ Jomeokee Music Festival 9/15/2012.  Matt Butler conducted an all star cast through some great improvisation. Players included: Jimmy Herring, Melvin Seals, George Porter Jr, Michael Kang, Al Schier, Vinnie Amico, Jennifer Hartswick, Jeff Sipe & more!  I hear it was all filmed - looking forward to seeing the results!

YARNYarn - Leftovers Volume 2 CD - Brooklyn-based Americana/Alt-Country band Yarn's sound owes as much to Gram Parsons and Earl Scruggs as to Jerry Garcia and Exile On Main Street-era Rolling Stones. Following in a fine tradition that includes forward thinking roots bands like The Flying Burrito Brothers and New Riders of The Purple Sage, Yarn weaves roots music idioms into a fresh sound that turns on hipsters and fans of country music alike, with technically impressive song-crafting and universal tales from the road of life.

Phish - Star Lake DVDsPhish - Star Lake 98 (2 DVDs) - All new 2-DVD set, recorded live on August 11, 1998 at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. The Star Lake 98 show was the 20th of summer to display the loose, experimental vibe of a tour that began in Europe and jumped to the United States enroute to the summer's ending Lemonwheel festival.

"Star Lake 98" is the only full video show available in the Archives from Phish's Summer 1998 tour. The 2-DVD set was created from archival VHS videotapes of the 3-camera lawn screen feed. The audio was mixed from multi-track masters in stereo PCM and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround (aspect Ratio 4:3, regions 1-6 NTSC) and clocks in at just about 2 hours and 50 minutes.

The introduction of a never-before-played cover each night earned the tour the nickname "the summer of covers" from fans and band alike and Star Lake's contribution was "Trench Town Rock." Star Lake also saw the return of "Time Loves A Hero" which was played for the first time in a decade and segued out of a sultry "Wolfman's Brother." An extended "Fee" extro and hot renditions of "Maze" and "Reba" set the stage for set II's super-swinging, ethereal "Runaway Jim" and the unusual pairing of "Meat" > "Limb By Limb". Local flavor of the Commonwealth was provided by "Bittersweet Motel" (the title of the Phish documentary recorded during the Europe dates) and "Wilson," King of Prussia.

The album has guests aplenty, some of them sending in their performances by email from distant shores. Dan "JD73" Goldman plays Rhodes on Dusty Groove, lending it a distinctly Headhuntersish sound. Seattle-based sax experimentalist Skerik adds dark, lush textures to the eight-minute soundtrack opus OOOM. Fellow Leeds luminary Sam Bell brings the percussion to Eddie's Benson-eque disco-jazz on Cielo while Madrid-based Chip Wickham toots a mean flute on Chocolate Chip. Corinne West - The Promise CDCorinne West - The Promise CD - The music of Corinne West doesnt really fit in any genre box. Depending on the listener, Corinnes music might get called roots, Americana, or even progressive folk. There are echoes of rural towns, honky-tonks, roads traveled, and roads less traveled. Listen more closely and there are traces of Appalachia and Ireland, the Opry and the Apollo, and somehow the pure elements of a starry night. It is elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk. It is west coast acoustic-soul music. By any name, her music is absolutely compelling both in the strength of her writing and the expressive power of her voice. The Promise has provocative lyrics, great accompaniment, and singing that quickens the heart. At the center of it all is Corinnes voice. She sounds like honey, smoke and sunrise. Its a voice you want to hear closely - theres integrity in it and each time you press ''play'' you have placed yourself in the best seat in the house. Corinne West tours North America and the UK continuously performing 200+ dates annually. $13.98

New Additions:

skbgthBilly Goodman with Steve Kimock - Big Red Barn Sessions CD - Billy Goodman's bluesy songs are helped out by the flawless guitar of Steve Kimock on this release! Distinctly American and fortuitously folky, these songs offer the perfect space for some beautiful acoustic and electric guitar work. Billy Goodman (guitar, vocals), Steve Kimock (guitar). Some tracks feature John Morgan Kimock (drums), Peter Fritz (bass), and Jim Kost (B3 organ). $14.00

zachgillthZach Gill - Stuff CD - Growing up in Saratoga, CA, Zach's since-high-school friendship with fellow musicians Dan Lebowitz and Steve Adams (aka LAG) had the trio playing Jazz, Power-Pop Rock, Bluegrass and everything in between. The group evolved into the Animal Liberation Orchestra in 1998. ALO has been Zach's primary musical vehicle over the last decade. This is Zach's first "solo" record, and from the moment you hear the opener, "Family," it's apparent that Gill is an effortlessly strong performer - one who knows how to craft and deliver easygoing pop with a large dose of buoyant soul. Think Leon Russell or Levon Helm if they grew up near the beach listening to Bob Marley. With unique instrumentation and a playful spirit, Zack Gill carries on a tradition of true musicians who revel in playing and creating. He's on a true musical journey that shows no sign of ending, and this album is simply an awesome glimpse inside the ride. $16.99

superthSupergenerous - Sao Paulo Slim CD - Bolstered by Cyro Baptista's inventive and surreal percussion and composition madness, Supergenerous doles out, um, generous portions of musical eclecticism by way of traditional songs, Brazilian influences, jazz telepathy, and satisfying rock weirdness. With special guest vocal help from Cassandra Wilson and Sue Patrick Breit, this album's songs come alive with a trippy tropical intensity that is nearly indescribable! Supergenerous is: Kevin Breit (guitar), Cyro Baptista (percussion), and Ian de Souza (bass). See our Video of the Week for a taste! $12.00

neel5th_0Johnny Neel & Criminal Element - Vol. 2 CD - This is the real deal right here - uncut, un-screwed-with funk and fusion jams from keyboardist Johnny Neel and his band! These guys lay the improvisational jazz-funk blues and soul grease on thick for their second release. Criminal Element always sounds fresh yet timeless in its richness and soul. $10.00

Papa Grows Funk - Mr. Patterson's Hat CD

When talking about Papa Grows Funk's latest album, Mr Patterson's Hat, band namesake John Gros makes one thing clear - “You might think you’re throwing down, but if Mr Patterson ain’t dancin’, you ain’t groovin’"
