New Releases

Max Allen Band CDMax Allen Band - Everyone Thinks You're Weird CD - Max Allen Band (MAB) is the brainchild and workhorse of singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Max Allen. For over a decade, Allen and MAB have kept audiences all over the country coming back for more of the wide variety of genres, incredible musicianship, thoughtful lyrics and contagious melodies that each show brings.

Everyone Thinks You’re Weird features many new territories for the band. Everything from pop to progressive rock to dubstep to calypso and more can be heard all while bringing out Max Allen’s signature vocal and guitar sound.

Introducing Ozric TentaclesTea Leaf Green - In the Wake CD - San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green have finally harnessed their considerable live mojo into a gorgeously sculpted studio counterpart that reflects the quintet's bounteous creativity, instrumental dexterity, and dedicated songwriting chops. This is an album in the classic sense, a wide spectrum journey one takes knowing steady hands will stir one through the shifting currents. Co-produced by Jeremy Black (Apollo Sunshine) at Oakland's increasingly hot Coyote Hearing Studio, In The Wake wriggles and glows with life, a chronicle of survivors thriving through myriad challenges, the bubbling product of a rugged, dented determination to seek beauty and truth in a song.

The new album features a diverse collection of 13 all new tracks with guest appearances by Dan Lebowitz (ALO), Leslie Helpert, the Jazz Mafia Horns and many more. After more than a year in the making, In The Wake is unlike anything the band has ever recorded before.

Slightly Stoopid Slightly Stoopid & Friends - Live at Roberto's TRI Studios CD/DVD - It was an honor being invited by the Grateful Dead and Furthur's Bob Weir into his state of the art TRI Studios. Slightly Stoopid had the privilege to bring down some of their close friends, family, and musical guests to "Roberto's" TRI clubhouse for an unprecedented live webcast and in-studio performance. Good friend Tommy Chong hosted the event and provided some "Wisdom." An extended family of musical guests joining in and playing on the session features Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Don Carlos, and Bob Weir himself! The result is a 31 song / 2 set acoustic and electric performance including behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and a rare interview segment moderated by Tommy Chong & Bob Weir. Last but not least, a portion of all proceeds will benefit 2 charitable organizations whom the band supports: Save the Children and World Food Programme

Les RacquetLes Racquet - Whale Hail CD - Les Racquet is an indie rock power trio with three-part vocal harmonies and virtuosic musicianship. This album was recorded as a retrospective representation of the first year as a touring band, from the gypsy life style and living out of a suitcase, to the serene moments that remind us of our humanistic spirituality, and for all the celebrations and hardships. For that, we stand up and proclaim, "Whale Hail!"

John Brown's BodyJohn Brown's Body - Kings and Queens CD - Kings And Queens is the band's most ambitious release to date, encompassing the entire history of the band's sound and legacy. Lead vocalist Elliot Martin reaches new levels of songwriting by striking the fine balance between classic JBB roots and a fresh new JBB sound. The album features songs that are dripping in their signature Future Roots sound influenced by British Reggae (Aswad, Steel Pulse), roots classics (Burning Spear, Alpha Blondy), dub experimentation (Scientist, King Tubby, Sly & Robbie), and modern Electronica. The results are a thicker, heavier style than most modern Reggae.

JJ Grey & MofroJJ Grey & Mofro - The River CD - This River is chock-full of vibrant characters and compelling stories set to Stax-worthy soul, greasy Southern rock and funk and glorious ballads that stay with you long after the last notes fade. Gutsy vocals, rugged horns and muscular grooves come together to create a down-home musical celebration.

Greyboy AllstarsThe Greyboy Allstars - Inland Emperor CD - The fourth album from the San Diego-based Funk/Jazz/Boogaloo group and their first in six years. Recorded at Elgonix Sound labs and mixed by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Mickey Petralia (Beck, Peached, Eels, Flight of the Conchords) the album is a mixture of influences from the five very distinct members of the group. Featuring: Karl Denson, Robert Walter, Chris Stillwell, Zak Najor & Elgin Park.

The Flaming LipsThe Flaming Lips - The Terror CD -The Terror was produced by the band s long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and The Flaming Lips at Tarbox Road Studios. It is comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works, along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect but then again, maybe not. It s up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you.

New Releases:

Passafire - Start From Scratch CDPassafire - Start From Scratch CD - On Passafire's fourth album release, Start From Scratch, the Savannah, GA based Rock outfit is truly starting from scratch. Injected with energy from a new member (keyboardist Mike DeGuzman), a freshly formed band-owned label (FlameGuy Records) and a new producer, Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers, Sublime, Meat Puppets), the band have made their best album to date. Trekking down to Sonic Ranch outside of El Paso, TX, where Connor Oberst, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sublime and many more recently recorded, they expand their sound from their previous releases; deeply honing guitar tones, exploring synth sounds, and laying down tracks of Harmonica and Banjo. "We always wanted to have a good balance of organic and synthesized sounds and we finally had the chance to make that happen this time," recollects singer, Ted Bowne. Songs like "Dimming Sky," "Lorelie, and the title track, "Start From Scratch," exemplify this newly found balance.

Passafire was formed in 2003 by students attending Savannah College of Art and Design. Throughout the years they have become a perpetually touring band playing hundreds of shows a year with bands like 311, Pepper, Rebelution, Matisyahu, Michael Franti, The Wailers and many more. Bowne doesn't mind the grueling schedule and adds, "Touring is the best way to keep the buzz about the band going. What keeps it fun and exciting is the people we meet and places we get to see. We are in a new city every day so there's always something to go see or do. If we didn't tour constantly, we wouldn't be doing as well as we are. That's a fact."

Jeff Beck - Live at BB Kings CDJeff Beck - Live at B.B. King's CD -Whenever Jeff Beck performs in a rare intimate concert setting, it's always an event. For this special occasion at the B.B. King Blues Club in New York City, the audience was treated the reunion of the Guitar Shop power trio of Jeff Beck (guitars), Terry Bozzio (drums) and Tony Hymas (keys). This brilliant guitar shredder truly threw down some of his classiest and hard driving repertoire ever as it was captured originally for a rare online release in 2003.

Ozric Tentacles - Paper Monkeys CDOzric Tentacles - Paper Monkeys CD - Its music is a highly psychedelic mixture of thumping basslines, sound effects and keyboard and guitar work, with a sound influenced by Steve Hillage and Gong. Many of the Ozrics' songs are in unusual time signatures and/or unusual Eastern-influenced modes. Furthermore, the band often features complex arrangements which change time signature, key signature and tempo frequently in the course of a track, a well-known element present in progressive rock. However, there are also moments of straightforward funk-influenced grooves and strong influences from jazz fusion, dub/reggae and ambient music styles.

These features are mixed with electronic elements, including densely layered psytrance- and techno-influenced arpeggiated synthesizers, pads, synth basslines, effects and programmed drumbeats. It also has a strong influence from dub and ambient music, with many quiet relaxed tracks that balance the frenetic, intense material.

Last Week:

Lizzy Ross BandLizzy Ross Band - Read Me Out Loud CD - Many bands take their time crafting their first full-length. Chapel Hill's Lizzy Ross Band took a bit longer than they wanted. Their self-released debut Read Me Out Loud shines through a 6-month struggle of broken bones and busted budgets, tackling obstacles with rich indie soul and boundless enthusiasm. Upbeat rhythms and melodies hide more serious themes. Lyrically, Ross's sincerity cuts deep. This is an album about growing up, wanting to know others and be known yourself, about embracing the world and all of its incumbent risks.

These struggles mix perfectly with Ross' fiery pipes. She recently won the Carolina Music Award for Rock Female of 2011 and is nominated for Best Female Blues artist at the 2011 Charlotte Music Awards. It's easy to understand why. Her voice delivers a charming trill one moment, only to erupt in rough, bluesy emotion the next. It's a powerful instrument that's earned her comparisons to artists like Grace Potter and Edie Brickell among others. Backed up by sophisticated arrangements that include touches of country, '60s roots rock, and a dash of Motown, Ross stares down the uncertain future and sings it into submission.

Read Me Out Loud's emotional power is rooted in its troublesome origins. The band began recording at Arbor Ridge in January. Drew Daniel, the band's drummer, broke his wrist two weeks in and recording ground to a halt. The band was at an impasse, but Ross was determined to continue. Unable to schedule regular studio time, Ross and Daniel started recording on a two-channel Tascam interface in her attic bedroom. Ross bought and learned Pro Tools, and Daniel recorded drum parts one-handed - tracking first the right hand part, then the left hand part.

"We were staying up all night, cables and drums strewn across the bedroom floor, constantly preoccupied with recording," Ross remembers. "When my head hit the pillow, I dreamt of Pro Tools."

In the midst of this fervor, the band brought in James Wallace (Max Indian, Light Pines) on keys, Tim Smith (Squirrel Nut Zippers) on sax, Josh Starmer (Birds and Arrows) on cello, John Garris (Big Fat Gap) on fiddle and other guest artists to round out the album, expanding the sound beyond the rough-and-ready folk-rock of their impassioned shows. Recording novices, Ross and Daniel sought out the mixing skills of Chris Stamey to bring it all together.

By the time the album was finished Brett Hart and Jock Pyle had joined on bass and electric guitar to solidify the band's lineup. Finally finished and raring to go, the Lizzy Ross Band plans to tour heavily in the coming year to support their powerful debut.

George Porter Jr & Runnin' Pardners - Can't Beat the Funk CDGeorge Porter Jr & Runnin' Pardners - Can't Beat the Funk CD - Can't Beat the Funk revisits with a fresh modern groove 16 of Porters favorite Meters tracks that were recorded, but never really performed live. The Runnin' Pardners undeniable energy and driving funk make these songs their own.

A member of the original Meters, considered by many to be the founding fathers of funk, Porter has proven to be capable of the ultimate fusion of rock, funk and R&B. He has gained recognition as one of the industry's elite bass players and continues to be not only an in demand performing artist but an accomplished studio musician and producer.

Runnin' Pardners is George Porter Jr's own unique long term project. Well respected by audiences and promoters as a quintessential New Orleans band, the five piece touring band continues to receive accolades on the jam band and festival scene. George Porter Jr has assembled some seasoned and talented musicians to join him on this project. Familiar Pardners - Brint Anderson (guitar) and, Michael Lemmler (keyboards) and rising stars on the New Orleans music scene Khris Royal (saxophone) and Terrence Houston (drums). Excited about the future of this band and this CD, George Porter Jr. plans to keep a smile on his face. "I feel like I am working towards something that will be remembered."

Oct 29 The Costume Ball - Raleigh, NC

Coming Soon:

Last Week:

Zach DeputyZach Deputy - Another Day CD - On his new release Another Day, soul-singer/songwriter/guitarist Zach Deputy-- with the help of Grammy-winning producer Scott Jacoby-- taps into the spirit of Al Green, Taj Mahal and Stevie Wonder, creating a soulful rhythm and blues album rich with ballads and mid-tempo songs. Another Day shows another side of a Zach Deputy-- well-known as a master of live looping and a staple in the grass-roots club and festival circuit-- and provides a glimpse at the soul of an artist and the depth of a songwriter. To handle the ever-present Latin, Caribbean and African elements in Zach Deputy's backbeat and place them in the contemporary soul / pop format of the songs, Jacoby tapped Graham Hawthorne (Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, David Byrne) for the drum kit. Bassist Al Carty came into the studio the first day after having played four church gigs. Despite the list of artists he has recorded or toured with (Lou Reed, De La Soul, Carrie Underwood, Gavin DeGraw), the church gigs alone proved that Jacoby was on the mark with this choice for the low end. Zach Deputy is, after all, a soul singer whose music is underpinned by Gospel as much as by any other musical idiom. Equally at home in the Gospel tradition, pianist / organist Will Buthod (Jay-Z, Fat Joe, Alicia Keys, The Harlem Gospel Choir) completed the studio trio that fleshed out Zach's vision for the recording. Best described as soulful rhythm and blues, Another Day will appeal to fans of classic soul legends as well as fans of contemporary artists like Jack Johnson and Amos Lee.

Johnny Winter - Roots CDJohnny Winter - Roots CD - This album returns Johnny to his roots by paying homage to the iconic blues heroes whose pioneering music influenced Winter's own signature sound. Roots is the follow up to his Grammy-nominated I'm a Blues Man, and includes a host of special guests join Winter trading licks in honoring his idols.

About Johnny: When you talk about Johnny Winter, you are talking about a person who walked with the originators of the artform. A man who played Woodstock, jammed with everyone from Muddy Waters to Jimi Hendrix to Willie Dixon to Albert Collins to John Lee Hooker to Janis Joplin to Steve Ray Vaughan - the list is full of endless icons. Johnny Winter has been the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues, championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Johnny had a special relationship with Muddy Waters and is often credited with revitalizing the legendary guitarist, where Winter produced and played on Waters Grammy-winning comeback album Hard Again, Grammy-winning I'm Ready (1978), Grammy-winning Muddy Mississippi Waters Live (1979) and also King Bee (1980). Johnny was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame in 1988.

Yellow DubmarineYellow Dubmarine presents Abbey Dub CD - 40 years after four musicians completed their swan song album which was named for the studio that they made famous, another group of supremely talented musicians entered into a studio to re-imagine that same album. Abbey Dub, the debut recording from Yellow Dubmarine, is an aural journey through the history of reggae with The Beatles' masterwork Abbey Road as your guide. From 'Come Together' through 'Her Majesty,' Yellow Dubmarine finds new life in all of the legendary album's 17 songs, keeping the heart of each tune present, but re-casting them in an entirely new light. Horns emerge where there was once the voices of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, a dubbed-out groove where there was once Ringo's four to the floor beat and a mellow skank that seems to discover the long lost island-roots soul of Abbey Road. A blissfully exuberant, rock-steady, Jah-worthy celebration of the Fab Four, Abbey Dub is quite simply a chance to hear this much loved classic again for the first time.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Stay Gold CDJacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Stay Gold CD - Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, the Tulsa, Oklahoma institution founded by pianist Brian Haas returns with a new full length album, Stay Gold. The effort further refines JFJO's singular vision that s been dubbed 'Red Dirt Jazz,' sounding equal parts earthy and nimble, pastoral and sweeping, elegant and free. The quartet taps into their birthright, drawing upon 'The Tulsa Sound' born of hometown heroes like JJ Cale, Bob Wills and Leon Russell, while growing these roots from a jazz foundation that's built firmly upon the influence of giants such as Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. JFJO recorded the album at acclaimed engineer/musician David Teegarden's Natura Digital Recording Studios just outside of Tulsa. The eight-track effort captures the band's strongest songwriting and most compelling improvisations to date. The second release from the current incarnation of the quartet, Stay Gold proves undoubtedly that pianist Haas has found the perfect foil in lap steel guitarist Chris Combs. Set to play over 150 shows in 2010 to an ever-growing worldwide fan-base, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey continue to evolve into one of the 21st century's most distinct jazz voices.

Ozric Tentacles - Erpland CD/DVDOzric Tentacles - Erpland CD/DVD - ERPLAND (originally a double LP) is the Ozric Tentacles' first CD proper and sets the tone for the records that follow. Let the wizard lead you throughout these uncharted lands, across the rainbow-splashed peninsula on the cover, as you bask in the radioactive glow of "Eternal Wheel," tumbling to and fro on a river of bubbling sequencers and cybertronic guitars. Prepare yourself for the mental journeys across inner space and "Mysticum Arabicola," where tablas pound out the future sounds of India, while above, our alien ancestors descend to reclaim the planet that was once their own, their starship's lights shimmering and boosters blasting the approaching earth into obsidian. This is music of colors, energy, and vitality; impeccably produced and extremely well executed. It would be a high crime to not enjoy the galloping sequencers, outerreach electronics, coruscating guitar lines, and enthralling percussion of the Ozrics on anything but the best that high fidelity has to offer.

The set also contains a DVD with the video of their gig at the Fridge Brixton. This is the first time on DVD - it was released many years ago on VHS. Only 3000 sets for the world....

Last Week:

Big Something - Stories From the Middle of Nowhere CDBig Something - Stories From the Middle of Nowhere CD - The Anonymous Band from Burlington, NC has turned into... a BIG Something. A new name and new direction for this 6 piece rock ensemble was only natural after some significant lineup changes and the recording of their newest album with critically acclaimed producer John Custer. Lets just call this eleven song saga their BIG debut.

The sound is BIG and clearly the work of some talented musicians, but its hard to describe exactly what they're doing as a whole, hence the name: BIG Something. Between the shredding guitars, mesmerizing saxophones, tasteful keys, vocals and synthesizers, there's an infectious groove and energy that holds it all together over a journey through several different genres and influences. But what really makes this album special is the songs themselves. They are catchy and charming, layered and soulful, with colorful characters that embody the best and worst in us all. One listen will lead to many and you'll realize you've discovered that BIG Something.

Balkan Beat Box - Blue Eyed Black Boy CD Balkan Beat Box - Blue Eyed Black Boy CDBalkan Beat Box - Blue Eyed Black Boy CD - With their roots firmly planted all around the Mediterranean rim and their solid rock and reggae foundations, this New York-based band are the new sensation. Their name, their personal history and the enthusiastic media & audience reactions suggest a link with the so-called Gypsy Rock movement, but their scope is reaching way beyond that: Balkan Beat Box really transcend categories (pop, electronic dance music, world, rock) by creating a new breed of 21st century music, deeply connected to their folk upbringing yet forward-thinking, which appeals to audiences across the geographical and stylistic borders.

Trampled By Turtles - Palominio VINYL LPTrampled By Turtles - Palominio VINYL LP - With four self-released albums to their credit and a word-of-mouth reputation that draws legions of diehard fans to their must-see-to-believe live shows, northern roots music hybrid Trampled by Turtles are set to release Palomino, their first album through Thirty Tigers/RED, on April 13th, 2010. With a sound that s a bracing hybrid of classic American songwriting, bluegrass and folk, this is forceful acoustic music from the land of ice and snow of dark winters, isolation and numbing cold delivered at breakneck pace with the fervor of religion. Without press or radio support or a national release until now, TxT continue to play to sold-out venues nationwide; with 2010 bringing the band for the first time to SxSW, Stagecoach Fest, High Sierra Fest, Wakarusa, DelFest (Bluegrass legend Del McCourey s festival) and more. They re even getting their own star at legendary Minneapolis club First Avenue, where they can regularly sell out two consecutive nights at the 1600-capacity venue. With Palomino, TxT have harnessed their considerable power and are ready to share it with the world. 180 Gram Vinly plus download card!

Jackie Greene - Gone Wanderin' CD Jackie Greene - Gone Wanderin' CD & Rusty Nails CD - With an unforced comfort unusual among new, young artists on small indie labels, 21-year-old Jackie Greene offered an impressive batch of above-average Americana roots rock. There's a world-weariness to his songs that might not seem fully earned given his age. But he sounds like he's feeling the emotions authentically enough, with a voice that blends country, rock, folk, and a bit of blues with as much ease as his music does. There's some early Dylan in that mix, and like Dylan, he plays both guitar and harmonica. But he seems like he's having more fun and passion than most budding artists following that path, even if the lyrics talk of hard traveling, dead ends, and hard-luck stories peopled by characters redeemed by their fortitude. In that sense, he can sometimes sound a little like a sweeter-

Jackie Greene - Rusty Nails CDvoiced Bruce Springsteen, though one plugged closer to folk sources than Springsteen is. A cut like "Down in the Valley Woe" gets close to the kind of old-time-rooted folk music you might have heard by some of the better early-'60s folk revivalists and singer/songwriters. Yet when he fills out his music with a bigger ensemble, songs like "Cry Yourself Dry" sound much like vintage material by the Band. Like a lot of artists who have generated ballpark comparisons to the aforementioned musicians, Greene had some work to do to establish himself as an original talent on par with those legends. But this was a good start, more assured and enjoyable than plenty of early 21st century Americana-indie rock artists with bigger reputations.

Quiver - Cup of Gold CDQuiver - Cup of Gold CD - Hailing from Virginia Beach VA, Quiver is best described as a "Fuse" band. With influences ranging from MMW and Jimmy Smith to Ben Folds Five and Sun Ra Arkestra, it it difficult to pinpoint their sound. Elements of jazz and loose funk intertwine with high energy jams and freestyle blues that usually leaves listeners in a trance. Best known for their live performances, Quiver usually plays to a packed house where you won't find many people sitting down. "...this is truly a pleasant surprise. Straight up jazz/soul/funk/rock. I don't think that cup of gold is large enough fellas, aim higher like a bucket." - Hearsay Magazine

"In a market close to saturated with half-baked cookie-cutter jam bands, it's Quiver's willingness to explore genre diversity yet still keep some semblance of conventional structure witch makes them original. It may also get them to the top." - Flash Magazine

Last Week's Additions:

Zigaboo Modeliste - Funk Me Hard CDZigaboo Modeliste & Gaboon's Gang - Funk Me Hard CD - An eclectic symposium of Zigaboo Modeliste's funk originals, recorded live at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans in 1980.  This EP is a close peek at Zigaboo's musical evolution, as he was just departing from the Meters at the time of the recording.  His songwriting genius is brilliantly present in these songs, resulting in a unique, funky musical experience.  Funk Me Hard is a history-making timepiece, delivering the intensity of live performance, as well as a session in funk mastery. $8.99

Moon Taxi - Live Ride CdMoon Taxi - Live Ride CD - Nashville's Moon Taxi redeem the notion of a "jam band," a descriptor that's grown into an epithet in the larger musical world that implies endless, limp noodling and lack of compositional or vocal substance. Not so with Moon Taxi, who are a jam band in the same way Little Feat or Bob Marley & The Wailers are jammers. Like these ancestors, Moon Taxi synthesizes divergent elements into a cohesive, concert-ready rush. It's pumping hard onstage where the real animal emerges in such bands, which makes Live Ride (self-released) a prime intro to this vibrant group who incorporate roots rhythms, Latinismo, Phish-y riffs, complex fusion and gutbucket, blue collar rock (a la early Doobie Brothers, actually...) into a pretty enjoyable ball they hurl with serious gusto. - Dennis Cook, Jambase.com $9.99

Skatalites - Stretchin' Out LPSkatalites - Stretchin' Out Vol 1 LP - Contains crucial extended jam sessions recorded at The Blue Monk Jazz Gallery in Kingston, Jamaica, Summer 1983. More than an hour of gooey, delicious ska from the original Skatalites in their prime! $12.98

Ray Lamontagne - Trouble LPRay Lamontagne - Trouble LP - Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, whose impressive 2004 debut, TROUBLE, draws on alt-country, roots rock, and progressive folk in a unique, strikingly sincere way, seems a likely candidate for the keeper of the flame. $16.98

Ray Lamontagne - Till the Sun Turns Black LPRay Lamontagne - Till the Sun Turns Black LP - Featuring lush, expansive soundscapes, Ray Lamontagne's Till The Sun Turns Black is an impressive artistic statement that transports his piercing lyrics and soulful vocals to lofty new heights. This, his second album of inspired, introspective songs, is as haunting and beautiful as his heralded debut and offers even more delectable sounds. Lamontagne's stunning talent is remarkable evident on Till The Sun Turns Black. $16.98
