Turtle Soup CDFrank Zappa - 200 Motels DVD - An image of how 'life on the road' was for rock bands 40 years ago, starring Frank Zappa.

Available for the first time on DVD, Frank Zappa's 200 Motels is a cult classic. The story, scattered with performances by the Mothers of Invention and the Royal Symphony Orchestra, is a plotless tale of life on the road for touring musicians. Originally shot on video and restored here, 200 Motels is a surrealistic nonstop visual extravaganza starring Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Ringo Starr and Who drummer Keith Moon. Includes bonus commentary from Director and script writer Tony Palmer.
* Commentary from Director Tony Palmer
* 8 page booklet
* Remastered from original tapes. DVD: $18.98

Stanton Moore - Groove Alchemy CDStanton Moore - Groove Alchemy CD or DVD - Hudson Music and Stanton Moore are thrilled to announce the release of the Groove Alchemy DVD, a complete method for developing a massive vocabulary of grooves in various funk-based styles, along with a historical overview of some of the key grooves in the development of funk. Says Moore: "Groove Alchemy reflects the program that I have put myself through to improve my own funk and groove playing. It s a groove boot camp that will vastly increase your knowledge of classic grooves and more importantly, will also ignite your imagination and make you a funkier and more creative drummer." On the 3-hour Groove Alchemy DVD, Stanton presents a historical overview of some of the most important drum grooves in history, showing the basic elements and conceptual development of each groove. He then shows you how to learn from the past and develop your own complete vocabulary for creating new funk grooves and patterns on the drumset. Starting with an in-depth study of the James Brown drummers (especially Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks) and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, Groove Alchemy goes far beyond a mere history lesson by applying Stanton's concepts for making your own playing more creative, musical, and funky. Topics include using variation and style combination to create new grooves, using rhythmic structures and clave ideas for advanced drum set vocabulary, hi-hat concepts, getting creative with backbeat grooves, a look at how to develop swing and shuffle grooves, and more. Intercut with the educational segments, Stanton s trio also performs new tracks from their latest CD (also called Groove Alchemy, Telarc Records), showing how many of the grooves discussed are applied directly to the music. Bonus features include slow-motion segments of key grooves.
CD $18.98, DVD $29.99

Jeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion CDJeff Beck - Emotion & Commotion CD - Jeff Beck returns with an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra. Rhino unleashes the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's restless genius with EMOTION & COMMOTION. Beck recorded EMOTION & COMMOTION late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album s diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ('Lilac Wine'), Olivia Safe ('Elegy For Dunkirk'), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ('I Put A Spell On You' and 'There s No Other Me').
To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini's immortal aria 'Nessun Dorma' and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley's interpretation of 'Corpus Christi Carol.' $18.98

Trampled By Turtles - Palomimo CDTrampled By Turtles - PalominoCD - With a sound that s a bracing hybrid of classic American songwriting, bluegrass and folk, this is forceful acoustic music from the land of ice and snow of dark winters, isolation and numbing cold delivered at breakneck pace with the fervor of religion. Without press or radio support or a national release until now, TxT continue to play to sold-out venues nationwide; with 2010 bringing the band for the first time to SxSW, Stagecoach Fest, High Sierra Fest, Wakarusa, DelFest (Bluegrass legend Del McCourey's festival) and more. They re even getting their own star at legendary Minneapolis club First Avenue, where they can regularly sell out two consecutive nights at the 1600-capacity venue. The release also attracted a global audience and found the former busker-turned-international-recording-and-touring artist appearing at music fests worldwide performing as the John Butler Trio. April Uprising, is Butler's most focused, diverse and accessible album to date, has already yielded a number one radio song on the Australian charts with its first single, 'One Way Road.'

Dr Dog - Shame Shame Shame CdDr Dog - Shame Shame Shame CD - Dr. Dog having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album-making process into one that favored the energy of their live performances, they knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Kaki King - Junior CD/DVDKaki King - Junior CD/DVD - Singer & guitarist extraordinaire, Kaki King, has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration for her unparalleled guitar skills. Not only is she the first ever female named a "Guitar God" by Rolling Stone, but she also received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of Sean Penn's 2007 film, Into the Wild. That same year, King appeared in August Rush as the protagonists guitar double, performed on the Foo Fighters' Grammy(r) winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, as well as opened for them during their Australia tour. This collection of songs delivers twists-and-turns: lyrically from exuberance and anger to heartbreaking melancholy; and sonically from experimental pieces to accessible pop. While the dazzling musicianship King has been renowned for still remains, Junior showcases her further maturation as a well-rounded artist, demonstrated by the humbling vocals displayed on this recording. Limited Edition Deluxe version includes bonus DVD Featuring Kaki King's stunning 2008 solo performance at the Berkeley Church in Toronto, alongside a collection of Kaki's music videos from the past decade. $17.98

Marin Sexton - Sugarcoating CDMartin Sexton - Sugarcoating CD - Sugarcoating, Martin Sexton's new studio album finds this one-of-a-kind writer/artist doing what he does best: locating larger truths within the specific details of the life he's living. "I write from personal experience -- my own hang-ups and quirks, good times and bad times," he acknowledges. "That keeps it real."

With Sugarcoating, Sexton may well have made his defining record. It is an unquestionable high point for this modern-day troubadour who headlines premiere venues across the country, oversees his label KTR and derives great satisfaction from livin the life he has made for himself. These are the fruits of a combination of rarefied talent, fierce determination, and work. $13.99

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CDSharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CD / LP - Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This Spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in "The Game Gets Old" at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style "Mama Don't Like My Man" at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the "Daptone Sound" at its best. CD $14.98, LP $15.98

Get Back on the Train to Bonnaroo, Part Three

My Papa used to say, “You gotta’ pay to ride the Train.”

Saturday, June 13. The conductor's compensation that morning was my pounding head and churning stomach. But we can't stop halfway to our destination.

Bonnaroo Music Festival 2008

After 7 years of legendary events, Bonnaroo has morphed into a well-oiled live music machine.

With fans, staff, crew, and performers all becoming more and more acclimated to the event as years go by, there's a tangible sense of comfort and familiarity that belies the sprawling mass of humanity that descends on Manchester each June. Campground areas bear the same moniker as years past, food and craft vendors have familiar spots that have turned into landmarks and the 5 main music stages seem to have found permanent coordinates, making the concertgoing experience even easier for veterans of the fest.

Coachella Announces Initial Lineup

coa.jpg
The line-up for the 2008 COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL--Friday, April 25, Saturday, April 26 and Sunday, April 27--was announced Monday Jan. 21 at an event in Mexico City. Beyond the line-up announcement (see below), COACHELLA promoters detailed their plans to make tickets and travel packages directly available to music fans throughout Mexico.

In this edition - More vinyl, moe. vinyl (and CD), North Mississippi Allstars, Drive-By Truckers, Cat Power, MGMT, and more
New Additions to the Catalog:

moe. - Sticks and Stones CD - moe. is on a roll! Sticks and Stones promises to move you with soulful lyrics and down-home rocking good times. Features 8 new songs and 2 previously unreleased songs. CD - $11.98. Vinyl (2/5/08) - $15.98.

North Mississippi Allstars - Hernando CD - Where 2005's Electric Blue Watermelon was a tribute to the tradition of the Hill Country Blues legacy that has always influenced the band, the brothers Dickinson and bassist Chris Chew decided to cut the lines from the past with Hernando and create their most personal sonic statement to date. To celebrate this newfound unity in independence, they named the record Hernando after the name of the town they grew up in together. Despite their new direction, the band kept the vibe close to home. Not only did they have their father, legendary producer Jim Dickinson, produce the record along with the band again, but they made it in the studio on his property. Hernando is a perfect representation of where NMA are now. It's the sound of a world-class rock trio stripped to its bare essentials - each musician focused on his own personal best performance yet intrinsically aware of the other players and the song - a communication only found between lifelong friends who have played and toured together for 11 years. It's maximum-energy blues-rock! CD - $14.99. Vinyl (2/26/08) - $16.99.

Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark CD - DBT's brand new album is a Southern gothic rock n' roll masterpiece adding up to over 75 minutes of pure rock n' roll. The band continues their notorious 3-guitar attack with the promotion of longtime sidekick John Neff. Patterson Hood contributes 9 songs to the album, 7 songs come from Mike Cooley, and 3 songs from Shonna Tucker. This is the first time Shonna has written for a DBT album. All this new material is enhanced with musical contributions from the legendary Spooner Oldham. Stylistically, the songs run the gamut from old-timey sounding country to a heavily R&B influenced slant. Some songs are quieter than any they've ever recorded and some rock harder than anything they've ever done. In the end it's still all rock and roll. CD - $17.99

Cat Power - Jukebox (Deluxe 2-CD Edition) - Her second album of covers! This one's a tribute to the great vocalists who've influenced her over the years. Chan's magnetic vocal personality makes these classic tunes all the more intriguing, and the band turns the songs into their own jazzy, bluesy versions. This is the Deluxe Edition with Bonus Disc and gatefold cover. Chan is backed here by the incomparable Dirty Delta Blues (Judah Bauer, Gregg Foreman, Jim White, and Erik Papparazzi) for this reverent collection of songs from some of the greatest legends in music. Guest appearances include Spooner Oldham (Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan), Larry McDonald (Toots & The Maytals, Taj Mahal), Teenie Hodges (Al Green, Memphis Rhythm Band), and Matt Sweeney (Chavez, Will Oldham). 2 CD - $18.98

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular CD - One of the hottest new groups in the land, sweeping the nation with the irresistible single "Electric Feel!" Filled with a lot of electronic fun and games, a lot of smart, wacky lyrics, and a lot of very impressive, if more than slightly nerdy, songwriting and producing, Oracular Spectacular announces MGMT's infectious style to the masses. There's plenty of awkward grooves that somehow work on a molecular level and some very enigmatic vocal work, creating an outright pop sound jacked up on washes of drum machine sounds and synth textures. CD - $12.99. Vinyl - $15.99.

More Vinyl! The LP section of our site keeps growing with new selections from The Beatles, Medeski Martin and Wood, The Beastie Boys, Flaming Lips, and more. On a side note, Vinyl can be elusive.
