Music on the Mountaintop 2012

Music on the Mountaintop 2012
This year marked the 5th anniversary of the Music On The Mountaintop festival with two nights of Railroad Earth making it their own.

The festival started on Friday and ran through Sunday closing out with the Sam Bush Band. Unlike past years, the festival consisted of just one stage nestled between the picturesque views of the mountains in Foscoe County located near Boone NC. Surrounding the stage were vendors of all sorts. Gifts of stain glass, beautiful jewelry and clothing for all could be purchased here. Food vendors were in the area as well to cure our hunger.

New Releases:

dangermuffingDangermuffin - Olly Oxen Free CD - With their brand new follow up, Olly Oxen Free, Dangermuffin have returned home. No longer easily dubbed an Americana or roots-rock band, the group's sound encompasses ska, calypso, and even Southern rock, often within the same song. Like the cry bellowed during a children's game of hide-and-seek, Olly Oxen Free signals that it's safe to come out from our hiding spots, gather back together, and celebrate late into the evening.

Larry Keel & Natural Bridge - ClassicLarry Keel & Natural Bridge - Classic CD - With these gutsy tracks, Larry Keel and his ultra progressive string band, Natural Bridge, have crafted a body of work that's original, fresh and new to the world of Americana and Bluegrass music. 9 of the 12 compositions on "CLASSIC" are written variously by Keel, his band mates or by close musician-song-writer friends. The overall result is a recording so full of raw spirit, grit, wit, soaring vocals and jaw-dropping musicianship that it's easy to see why guitar icon, Tony Rice calls "Larry Keel...a force to be reckoned with!"

Coming Soon:

Lettuce - Fly CDLettuce - Fly CD - Modern day rulers of old school funk, the seven-piece Brooklyn-based juggernaut Lettuce drops their third studio album, Fly, a decidedly raging slab of relentless groove, hyper-charged syncopation and psychedelicized soul anthems. Having blown up stages from coast to coast in 2011, ranging from The Fillmore in San Francisco to Terminal 5 in NYC, Bear Creek Music Festival to Camp Bisco and all points in between, Lettuce entered Brooklyn recording studio The Bunker this winter with a fresh batch of road-tested material and a revitalized sound honed razor sharp by a year spent on the road.

Last Week:

Everyone OrchestraTedeschi Trucks Band - Live: Everybody's Talkin' 2CDs - Armed with a new Grammy Award for a debut album deemed "masterpiece" by Rolling Stone and praised by concert-goers around the world for brilliant musicianship and roof-raising performances, Tedeschi Trucks Band is catapulting to new heights of popularity as they release their first live album, Everybody's Talkin.

Critics have praised the outstanding live performances of Tedeschi Trucks Band. Led by one of the most dynamic husband-wife teams in popular music, singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and slide guitar virtuoso Derek Trucks, the 11-piece ensemble is the ultimate big band for lovers of rock and delta blues that also pays homage to the far-ranging influences of funk, gospel, jazz and world music.

Everybody s Talkin contains eleven tracks cherry-picked by the group to serve as a musical look-back on their first band-building year. Featured are versions of tunes from Revelator that are already crowd favorites "Bound For Glory", \"Love Has Something Else To Say" some with added details, that takes them a notch higher than the studio originals. Other songs reveal the group's affection for a wide range of soulful forebears, including Stevie Wonder ("Uptight" ), Muddy Waters ("Rollin' And Tumblin'"), Bill Withers ("Kissin' My Love"), Joe Cocker ("Darlin' Be Home Soon"), Bobby Bland ("That Did It"), Harry Nilsson ("Everybody's Talkin'") and the Staple Singers ("Wade In The Water").

Together, the tracks flow one into the next with the collective spirit and lift of a typical TTB concert raising the roof with a Saturday night sense of abandon, and gently concluding with a Sunday morning spiritual.

Leftover SalmonLeftover Salmon - Aquatic Hitchhiker CD - The first studio album in 8 years! Recorded in Denver, Colorado and Portland Oregon during the December and January 2011-12. Original artwork by Ray Troll (www.trollart.com) and the first album release from Leftover Salmon to consist of all original music from the band.

Suwannee SpringFest 2012 Review

As a result of kicking off its 16th anniversary, this year's Suwannee SpringFest ultimately proved to be a sure reminder that the presence of music, art, and nature when shared over a 4 day weekend with the family is a beautiful thing.

Music lovers couldn't ask for a better setting to open the first big festival of the season than right here in the tranquil, awe-inspired setting of Live Oak Florida.

Aiken Bluegrass Festival, May 13th-14th 2011

For 6 consecutive years the Aiken Bluegrass Festival has delivered an awe-inspiring array of grass roots music for a great cause. This festival has worked hand in hand with STAR Riding, a non-profit organization, who enriches the lives of children and adults with mental and physical disabilities through safe therapeutic interaction with horses. This year’s festival was beyond my expectations with a pure kind-hearted staff and a mature audience that made the whole experience a pleasant, family oriented, dog friendly good time.

Suwannee SpringFest March 24th-27th 2011

15 years and still as magical and breath-taking as ever Suwannee SpringFest captured the hearts of fans both young and old. This festival has what most festivals strive for and that’s a sense of community, bringing together those who love music, art and nature, in a magnificently serene place “The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and Campground” near Live Oak FL.

Thursday

We arrived to the park early afternoon after a grueling 6 hour drive.  Having come in years past we already had our spot staked out next to the parks horse stables which are located on the far side of the park, its wide open with plenty of space to set up camp and great bathrooms with showers to boot.  The attendance for the weekend was around 6000 people making it very comfortable.  Today the festival opened up three stages out of six, The Uncle Charles Porch Stage, the Big IV Amphitheater, and the SOS Music Hall.

Music on the Mountaintop - August 27th and 28th, 2010

The beautiful Boone, NC was the home for the 3rd annual Music on the Mountaintop. The weather was an absolute perfect bliss with temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's which was a nice change considering the scorching hot summer.

New Additions:

Umphrey's McGee - Mantis - Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay. And in an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions. CD $14.99 / LP $15.99

Euphonic Brew - In a Sea of Stained Glass CD - Euphonic Brew presents a fascinating journey through a wide variety of musical styles and moods, all underpinned by the band's remarkable chordal composition and fantastic sense of melody. This makes every stop on the trip a memorable one, regardless of the scenery which can range from driving rock and riveting funk to harmony-laden pop and bouncing piano tap-alongs. The lyrics match the musical diversity well, alternating between the concrete and abstract throughout, and yet always bordering on the personal. All of this adds up to a wonderfully diverse collection of songs that both catch the ear and move the head, and that become more interesting with each listen rather than less. $9.99

Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention - In the 1960s DVD- This film reviews the true story of The Mothers of Invention and the music they made during the first incarnation of the band. With group members Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston and Art Tripp taking up the tale and revealing - often for the first time - what the real Frank Zappa was all about; and with contributions from 'scenesters 'like LA wildman Kim Fowley, biographer Billy James, Zappa academic Ben Watson, music journalist Richie Unterberger and English writer and musician Alan Clayson - acclaimed biographer of Edgar Varese - this program is the most detailed, informative and enjoyable documentary on Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention yet to emerge. Also features rare footage of Frank and The Mothers from throughout the 1960s, archive interviews, seldom seen live performances, and a host of other features. 134 minutes $19.95

Alex Machacek, Neal Fountain, Jeff Sipe - Official Triangle Sessions CD This was a special weekend of music. Neal Fountain hails from the musical hotbed of Athens, GA, and has been playing professionally from the age of 14. Best known as a sideman to Col. Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners (a post-A.R.U. project of Hamptons) and drumming phenom Jeff Sipe. Neals name is on the short list of greater Atlanta's finest musicians. $13.99

North Mississippi Allstars - Do It Like We Used To (2 CDs + DVD) This retrospective includes two CDs that chronologically follow highlights of the Allstars' live performances over the band's first 10 years. The DVD features a full length documentary on the history of the band. Do It Like We Used To Do will please the hardcore NMA fans as well as any lover of American roots music, Southern Rock and Blues. $16.99

Sol Driven Train - Tajar Tracks 2 CdSol Driven Train - Tajar Tracks 2 CD - Sol Driven Train's second children's record, Tajar Tracks Two takes up where the first Tajar Tracks left off, presenting a bevy of new sing along tunes for parents and kids alike. "The first Tajar Tracks was voted Best Children's Album of 2005 in South Carolina,"says Joel Timmons, singer, guitarist and songwriter with the group. "After the release and obvious success of our first record for children, we wanted to get back to Gwen Valley and record again as soon as possible. But our constant tour schedule didn't leave many holes to get back to the camp and record with the kids. This year, we made it a priority to spend time at Gwen Valley again and get Tajar Tracks Two out for the new year." $12

Derek Trucks Band - Already Free CDDerek Trucks Band - Already Free CD - Nearly a year in the making and brimming with a newfound focus on original material, Already Free is The Derek Trucks Band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond blues to incorporate the larger sounds of rock & soul. Already Free, features a stirring cover of Bob Dylan's Down In The Flood as well as the new songs, Down Don't Bother Me and Get What You Deserve. Guest appearances on the album include vocals from Susan Tedeschi and Doyle Bramhall II. $16.97

The Station - LiveThe Station - Speed of Sound - Live at Marley's (2 CDs) - The Station balances its jams on a metallic edge, adds a dash of funky machismo and even summons its Southern-rock roots to provide a fine introduction for new listeners. Despite a running time of nearly two-and-a-half hours -- all but two of these 12 songs clock in at longer than 10 minutes -- Speed of Sound remains a far-from-laborious listen. The Station jams creatively while still focusing on the songs' melodies, structure and overall effect. Highlights include Illuminator, which boasts jaw-dropping guitar and sax solos, and the heartland anthem Midwest Moonshine. But, really, cue up just about any of these tunes, push 'play' and let your opinion of jam bands likely be altered for the better. - Michael Popke, Sea of Tranquility.org $16

Mark O Connor's Hot Swing TrioMark 0'Connor's Hot Swing Trio CD - Acoustic, progressive violin and Django-style guitar jazz played by Mark O'Connor and his Hot Swing Trio featuring Frank Vignola and Jon Burr. Writing about the live concert at which this recording was made, respected critic Terry Teachout, wrote for the Washington Post, "what I find most exciting about the Hot Swing Trio is the collective willingness of its members to knock down the artificial boundaries between seemingly different musical idioms. I can't wait to hear the CD that comes out of these concerts." $15.99

Albert Collins - Cold Tremors (2 Live Cds)Albert Collins - Cold Tremors (2 live CDs) - Collins plays his fingers raw, coaxing more diversity and tasteful licks out of his guitar than you'll hear on most of his studio recordings. The first disc features a much-recommended live album, recorded at the infamous El Mocambo in Toronto. The second features a 1969 gig Collins recorded at the Fillmore in San Francisco, when he served as an opening act for the Allman Brothers. $22.98
