All Good Music Festival, July 14-17, 2011

The 15th annual All Good music festival once again showed us just what it means to be ALL GOOD. Being “All Good” not only signifies the feelings you get when attending but I believe it also represents the artist performing throughout the weekend. The festival lineup was stellar to say the least with acts like Primus, Further, STS9, Pretty Lights, and Yonder Mtn. String Band to name a few.

My Five Favorite Sets - All Good Music Festival - Masontown, WV - July 14-17, 2011

My Five Favorite Sets - All Good Music Festival – Masontown, WV – July 14-17, 2011
The list of bands at most festivals usually includes a chunk of bands you’ve probably not heard of, and these lists likely include a chunk of filler you just aren’t going to entirely enjoy once they crank up. All Good Music Festival simply doesn’t operate that way.

Even the bands you've not heard of are likely going to make your ears and body dance just as much as the heavyweights on the bill. This makes things difficult when sitting down to write an alliteratively titled My Five Favorite Sets piece, because I cannot just look at the heavyweights like Furthur, Primus, STS9, Umphrey's McGee, Warren Haynes, and so forth. I actually have to weigh every option, and (this is a good thing) almost everyone ends up on the final scale.

New Releases:

Rodrigo y GabriellaRodrigo y Gabriela - Live in France CD - Rodrigo y Gabriela are riding high on the global success of their Hans Zimmer collaboration on Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; which has recently just enjoyed the biggest global opening weekend in the history of the movies.

Summer's here and the time is right for Rod & Gab's first love: wowing crowds in the big fields across Europe & North America. To coincide with their tour dates, ATO Records is set to release Live In France, recorded at various venues around the Fifth Republic on the 11:11 world tour.

It's a very different live document to 2008's Live In Japan, which marked the end of Rod & Gab's seated performances. Their live shows are constantly evolving and the 11:11 tour mixed deft acoustic dexterity with an electrifying shred-fest of white hot duelling guitars. No chairs then, but plenty of FX pedal hopping and feet on the monitors rocking. The album captures this fusion framed by rapturous receptions from their fanatical legion of French followers.

Abstract Logix LiveAbstract Logix Live: The New Universe Music Festival 2010 (2 CDs) - On November 20 and 21, 2010, maverick record label Abstract Logix hosted a series of spectacular performances, featuring an array of artists who handily defy genre categorization in favor of unbridled expression. The first New Universe Festival was a die-hard music lover's dream, defined by artists who seamlessly mingle compositional ingenuity and improvisational grace and fervor. This coming September, Abstract Logix will also release a 2 DVD set, featuring a generous selection of festival performances and bonus material (additional performances, interviews, and more), filmed in high-definition throughout the event.

Among the featured musicians were pioneering guitarist John McLaughlin and his current band the 4th Dimension with special guest, world music legend tabla maestro Zakir Hussain; Widespread Panic guitar hero Jimmy Herring with his electric band; Return to Forever Drummer Lenny White; the all-star quartet Human Element (keyboardist Scott Kinsey, bassist Matt Garrison, percussionist Arto Tuncboyaciyan; fearless guitarist and improviser Wayne Krantz appearing with the amazing Anthony Jackson on bass; visionary Indian composer and drummer Ranjit Barot; and emerging guitar visionary Alex Machacek.

''I feel honored to participate,'' says festival headliner John McLaughlin, while on tour promoting his Grammy-nominated album To the One. ''My life has been dedicated to my instrument and music, and I continue to devote myself to music in order to be worthy of such a privilege. You will hear the kind of complicity that exists between us all this is a very special element, and frankly essential for making good music.''

Jimmy Herring very succinctly put it, ''This is real music played by real people, happening in real time. We're up there listening and reacting to one another, and people genuinely respond to the risks we take. This is human music in a mechanized age.'

John Butler Trio - Live at Red Rocks (2 CD/DVD)John Butler Trio - Live at Red Rocks (2 CD/DVD) - On June 4, 2010, the internationally acclaimed John Butler Trio played the largest headlining concert of its career at the majestic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO, joined by Native American dancers and an electrified crowd. The concert instantly became a career benchmark and will receive a gorgeous 3-disc live DVD/CD box set release as 'The John Butler Trio: Live At Red Rocks' on ATO Records July 19.

The 3-disc box set package features two audio CDs with live versions of songs from Butler's three studio albums and one 140-minute full-length DVD that includes the entire, uninterrupted concert, behind the scenes footage and the official video for 'Revolution,' the epic opening track from Butler's 'April Rising' (2010.)

'Live at Red Rocks' highlights Butler's prodigious guitar skills, powerful songwriting and the transcendental live performance he delivers with Byron Luiters (bass) and Nicky Bomba (drums.) It showcases the innovative, rhythmically complex, diverse and playful sound that has garnered the JBT a devoted fan base worldwide.

Rev Payton's Big Damn Band - Payton on Patton CDRev Payton's Big Damn Band - Payton on Patton CD - A lot of folks will tell you that Robert Johnson was the King of the Delta Blues. But for god's sake don't say it in front of Reverend Peyton.

The guitar-wielding leader of The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band has no problem praising Johnson and his incredible body of work. "But there's only one King of the Delta Blues, and his name was Charley Patton," Peyton said. "I'll go toe-to-toe with anyone who says different." This summer Peyton and his band will release a powerful tribute to their hero in the form of Peyton on Patton. The 13-track CD will exclusively feature songs written and recorded by Patton during his brief recording career, which came to an end upon his premature death in 1934. Peyton on Patton will be released July 19 by SideOneDummy Records.

During his lifetime and for nearly a quarter of a century afterward, Charley Patton was regarded almost universally as the preeminent Delta bluesman. He spent his formative years at Dockery Plantation near Ruleville, Mississippi, where he influenced future blues and gospel stars including the aforementioned Robert Johnson, as well as Son House, Willie Brown, Pops Staples, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf. His flamboyant performance style was widely emulated and his songs frequently covered. During a five-year period, Patton recorded nearly 60 songs for Paramount Records.

The new CD Peyton on Patton features a number of Patton's best-loved blues songs including "A Spoonful Blues," "Mississippi Boweavil Blues" and "Tom Rushen Blues," as well as Patton-penned spirituals like "Jesus Is A Dying Bed Maker," "Prayer of Death, Part 1" and "You're Gonna Need Someone (When You Come to Die)". The CD also includes three radically different versions of "Some of These Days I'll Be Gone" featuring varying instrumentation and recorded in different keys and arrangements.

Coming Soon:

Johnny Winter DVDJohnny Winter - Live at Rockpalast 1979 DVD - Johnny Winter live on Germany's famous Rockpalast TV show in 1979. Straight up blues like only Johnny can deliver, lean and mean. Johnny and the band also blaze through some killer covers like the Rolling Stones' "Jumping Jack Flash" and "Suzie Q."

Moksha - Here to Go CDMoksha - Here to Go CD - Las Vegas rock outfit Moksha, who finds a common musical stance with bands like Phish, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead, among others, release their second album. "Here to Go" was produced independently by Moksha Music Limited and four-time Grammy Award winner James 'Bonzai' Caruso, with Peter Apfelbaum doing the horn arrangements.

"Here to Go' is Moksha's first endeavor with new band member, Sam Lemos as lead vocal, adding another level to Moksha's mastery of instrumental jam music. It fuses all the musical genres that influence each of the band members, into a sound uniquely their own.

"Starswarm", "Here to Go" and "Bubbles" Take a rocket blast, straight into a deep space, psychedelic funk, rock utopia, back down to earth with melodic pop, and back again into hyperspace with a rip-roaring instrumental.

"Real Show", "Into Thin Air", and "Fruit of Tulum", stay closer to earth with Reggae, World Music, and Spanish Instrumentals, that keeps the energy moving and the horns and vocals shining. "Leg up" is a sweet melodic country inspired ballad. The cornerstone of the album

"The Measure of all things" is a beautiful and mercurial song that delves into the depths of the mythic realm and the heights of keyboard solo heaven.

The remaining songs switch between explosive funk with soaring vocals and classic horns, to good solid rock that pushes until it eventually comes apart at the seams

With their music circling the world, then to space and back, Moksha is "Here to Go"

Last Week:

Turbine - Blue Light City CDTurbine - Blue Light City CD - Working closely with producer John Davis, who recorded The Black Keys' Grammy winning song Tighten Up off their recent album, Brothers, Turbine puts forth an album that guitarist Jeremy Hilliard describes as, "By far, the best our music has ever been presented."

Blue Light City is laced with subtle intricacies that listeners might glance over without even noticing. The music is dotted with odd time signatures, unorthodox structures, and innovative applications to the instruments. Yet, what makes Blue Light City such a stellar listen is despite the nearly endless complexities in the music, the album barrels along in nonstop fun. The songs are catchier than ever without jeopardizing the band's musical training and respect for sophistication.

Turbine has quickly gained a devoted audience who have come to expect the unexpected. Chosen by Relix Magazine as "Artists on the Verge", they can scratch like a DJ with their harmonicas, turn an electric guitar into a silver fiddle, and sing three-part harmonies over wild, high-energy sci-fi rock soundscapes.

Hailing from New York City, Turbine has graced the stage at almost every major festival across the country including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, 10K Lakes, Gathering of the Vibes, and Telluride Bluegrass just to name a few. They have also been fortunate enough to perform with many influential bands including the Del McCoury Band, the Benevento-Russo Duo, and moe. With Blue Light City, the band hopes to take the next step and reach that level of notoriety for themselves.

Thievery Corporation - CToubab Krewe - TK2 CDToubab Krewe - TK2 CD - Asheville, NC's Toubab Krewe takes the African guitar sound pioneered by Ali Farka Toure and others to strange and wonderful new places on their Nat Geo Music debut, TK2. Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. The fruits of this hard work can be heard on the scintillating TK2. What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Teal Brown (drums, congas), Drew Heller (guitar, piano, fiddle), David Pransky (bass, guitar), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, percussion) have wrought on TK2 reflects the many miles and musical journeys that have transpired since their studio debut five years ago.

Jackass Flats - Rusty Feeling CDJackass Flats - Rusty Feeling CD - Nearly a decade ago, Jackass Flats began their journey as a bluegrass band chasing the scene up and down the east coast: country festivals in the middle of nowhere, bars, dives, late nights, busking in the cities, life in a van--these things will leave you with stories to tell and that's exactly what Jackass Flats did; releasing two acclaimed albums of original songwriting: "Purgatory Mountain" and "Greetings From Jackass Flats". The boys kept the old van, but soon found themselves playing the region's premiere stages and festivals.

As Jackass Flats closes in on a decade of existence, they've expanded their line up to include drums, keys, and pedal steel--propelling their sound from string band to "full tilt Americana juggernaut". With so many instruments at their disposal, the typical set finds the band everywhere from bluegrass, rockabilly, honky tonk, country, western swing, all with the energy and edge that has made the Jackass Flats show a must see.

In June of 2011 the boys released their album, "Rusty Feeling." The album was recorded and produced by Bobby Read (Bruce Hornsby Band, Keller Williams). An album whose songs range from raucous and rowdy bluegrass, to the textured and melodic sounds of progressive (non-nashville) country.

Wakarusa 2010

Top notch music along with fun filled activities made this year’s festival an exceptionally good time.
wakawelcome
This year the 7th annual Wakarusa Music Festival was held at the magical Mulberry Mountain near Ozark, Arkansas.

Coming from the Carolina's, it took about 14 hours of driving to get to Ozark.  Along the way I have to throw in that we stopped in Memphis, TN for some of the best BBQ in the world. If you like BBQ then Corky's in Memphis is a must stop for anyone.

Future Rock - Live in Wicker Park CDFuture Rock - Live in Wicker Park CD - New live album that captures the raw energy of a memorable live-electronic performance that packed the fair streets of Chicago, turning rooftops into dance floors and fans into maniacs hanging out of open windows. The atmosphere and the songs, six of which have never officially been released--are the best representation of Future Rock ever recorded. Live in Wicker Park also features live remixes of Black Moth Super Rainbow and Death from Above 1979 that are sweeping proof of Future Rock's remarkable remix skills. But that's not all. The live album is a 52-minute wall of sound that'll leave listeners wondering how three people create the rhythmic textures that seem to come from a small army, rather than just a trio. The album is available everywhere, TODAY, and is featured on Future Rock's Bandcamp site: http://futurerock.bandcamp.com. You can watch a live video of the song, Romantic Rights (Live Remix) from Future Rock's 4/30/2010 performance at the Park West in Chicago on Vimeo.

Moksha - Mammal or Machine CDMoksha - Mammal or Machine CD - Explosive shows, filled with an arsenal of well-crafted material, have earned Moksha their reputation as Las Vegas' secret weapon. They are emerging from the glitz and glamour of Sin City and garnering a following of loyal fans on the West Coast. Swirling in subtlety, their music paints a sonic landscape that unfolds in the moment and feeds on the dynamic ebb and flow of audience and band interconnection. Moksha joined forces with guitar legend Brian Stoltz (Neville Brothers, Funky Meters, Bob Dylan and others) in studio to record their first full album. Moksha's modern sound combined with Stoltz's New Orleans flavor created a sound that can only be described as unstoppable. $12

Rare Blend - Sessions CDRare Blend - Sessions CD - SESSIONS is a 14 track disc of LIVE recordings from stage and studio. Unlike the group's previous CD's, SESSIONS highlights Rare Blend's "one takes", and "in the moment" jam-fusion instrumentals. The recordings took place in a variety of settings and venues during 2008 not only in Cleveland, but also in Cincinnati and Baltimore, MD. SESSIONS is broke up into 3 journeys....Live recordings from Stage - Studio - Film.
Stage: pretty straightforward, these tracks were captured at gigs. Most notably from the Crooked River Groove taping in Cleveland, Orion Studios concert in Baltimore MD, and a really cool local event called Open Air Market Square here in Cleveland. Studio: improvisations at Odyssey Studios, during rehearsals. Hit record and started jamming. Film: these tracks were captured during our performances to screenings of silent films. A project launched by Bobbi Holt (keyboards) in 2007 called "Bridging The Gap", she believed that Rare Blend music would compliment a film and had always wanted to gel the 2 mediums and present it as a "live" screening and musical performance. The tracks included were performed to the 1925 silent Phantom of the Opera at the Fairfield Arts Center in Fairfield Ohio outside of Cincinnati, and an outdoor screening of the 1929 silent Metropolis at Coventry P.E.A.C.E Park in Cleveland Hts., Ohio. $12

Marco Benevento - Between Needles & Nightfall CDMarco Benevento - Between Needles & Nightfall CD - Between The Needles & Nightfall was conceived at Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY where engineer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family) tracked Marco Benevento and his trio over three days. To achieve the colors he envisioned, Benevento recorded on a baby grand piano bolstered by guitar pick-ups, amplifiers and a myriad of pedals and circuit bent toys, while overdubbing Moog, Optigan, Mellotron and Farfisa. He then transferred the tracks to his home studio, taking the next two months to cut, loop and shape the pieces into full-fledged songs.

For the final mixes, Benevento handed off his work to three of his favorite engineers: Mell Dettmer (Sunn O))), Eyvind Kang), Jesse Lauter (Low Anthem, Elvis Perkins) and Vid Cousins (Amon Tobin, Kid Koala). The results range from the day-glo electro-rock of It Came From You to the simply-stated lullaby Ila Frost to the shimmering Arcade Fire-meets-Brad Mehldau anthem Two Of You.

With the release of Between The Needles & Nightfall, Marco Benevento continues to define himself as one of the most prolific new voices of his era, blurring genres from song to song, and more often from measure to measure, with his own take on simple pop pleasures, dance party rave-ups and art jazz experimentation. $14.98

30db - One Man Show CD30db - One Man Show CD - Hailing from Chicago, longtime friends, musical collaborators, and all-around conspirators Jeff Austin (of Yonder Mountain) and Brendan Bayliss (of Umphrey's McGee) have been writing music and playing together for years. In between their busy tour schedules with Yonder and Umphrey's, the two musicians had always wanted to start a band. They wrote some songs, played some shows (both on Jeff's turf in Colorado and back home iN Chicago) and so 30db was born.

After accruing a mass quantity of music, they decided it was about time to make a record. They recruited an amazing crew of musicians to join them in Boulder for some recording sessions, and that's when 30db really took its shape and became a band. Holding down the sound on drums is the Memphis-based North Mississippi Allstars drummer and co-founder, Cody Dickinson. E-Town host and legendary guitar player from Hot Rize, Nick Forster plays electric guitar and Boulder-based Eric Thorin keeps it tight on the bass. The final product is a collection of heartfelt tunes, filled with fun yet ironic lyric undertones and solid playing from start to finish. $14.98

Turtle Soup CDTurtle Soup CD - Turtle Soup is a tasty original blend of rock, funk and trance with Latin and world music accents. Based in NJ, their unique sound, upbeat songs and explosive musicality have audiences in the Northeast US coming back for more. Every year, they donate a 4-hour set for charity at the New Jersey Marathon (sometimes to crowds over 10,000 strong), and now Turtle Soup's signature style is growing quicker than ever in the tight-knit music festival community. Critics also approve with glowing reviews and awards. Turtle Soup was named "New Groove of the Month" at jambands.com, and they've won "Top Jam Band" and "Top Groove Band" at the Asbury Music Awards for several years in a row. Their self-titled CD was mastered by the double Grammy Award Winner, Tom Ruff. CD reviews favorably compare them to classics such as Santana, The Grateful Dead and The Who, while at the same time recognizing them as torch-bearers for a new generation. $12

John Butler Trio - April UprisingJohn Butler Trio - April Uprising CD - The album finds the multi-platinum Australian artist with a new line up. Recorded at The Compound, Butler's self-built studio in the heart of his hometown of Fremantle, Western Australia, April Uprising is the followup to 2007's critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National. This album yielded a number one US Triple A single, 'Better Than,' and rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. The release also attracted a global audience and found the former busker-turned-international-recording-and-touring artist appearing at music fests worldwide performing as the John Butler Trio. April Uprising, is Butler's most focused, diverse and accessible album to date, has already yielded a number one radio song on the Australian charts with its first single, 'One Way Road.'
$14.98

Dr Dog - Shame Shame Shame CdDr Dog - Shame Shame Shame CD - Dr. Dog having evolved from a band whose primary creative outlet was the album-making process into one that favored the energy of their live performances, they knew they wanted to document the new dynamic they had developed on the road. Producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) was brought in to help peel back the intricate arrangements of last album Fate to reveal the raw immediacy of a tight five-man unit honing their craft. $16.98

Delta Moon - Hellbound Train CDDelta Moon - Hellbound Train CD - Delta Moon is a renowned, nationally touring blues-rock band. In 2008, The American Roots Music Association named Delta Moon lead singer Tom Gray as Blues Songwriter of the Year. His songs have been recorded by Cyndi Lauper, Manfred Mann, Carlene Carter and Bonnie Bramlett, to name a few. In the 1980's, his rock band, The Brains, recorded two albums for Mercury Records. $13.99

Kaki King - Junior CD/DVDKaki King - Junior CD/DVD - Singer & guitarist extraordinaire, Kaki King, has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration for her unparalleled guitar skills. Not only is she the first ever female named a "Guitar God" by Rolling Stone, but she also received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of Sean Penn's 2007 film, Into the Wild. That same year, King appeared in August Rush as the protagonists guitar double, performed on the Foo Fighters' Grammy(r) winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, as well as opened for them during their Australia tour. This collection of songs delivers twists-and-turns: lyrically from exuberance and anger to heartbreaking melancholy; and sonically from experimental pieces to accessible pop. While the dazzling musicianship King has been renowned for still remains, Junior showcases her further maturation as a well-rounded artist, demonstrated by the humbling vocals displayed on this recording. Limited Edition Deluxe version includes bonus DVD Featuring Kaki King's stunning 2008 solo performance at the Berkeley Church in Toronto, alongside a collection of Kaki's music videos from the past decade. $17.98

Marin Sexton - Sugarcoating CDMartin Sexton - Sugarcoating CD - Sugarcoating, Martin Sexton's new studio album finds this one-of-a-kind writer/artist doing what he does best: locating larger truths within the specific details of the life he's living. "I write from personal experience -- my own hang-ups and quirks, good times and bad times," he acknowledges. "That keeps it real."

With Sugarcoating, Sexton may well have made his defining record. It is an unquestionable high point for this modern-day troubadour who headlines premiere venues across the country, oversees his label KTR and derives great satisfaction from livin the life he has made for himself. These are the fruits of a combination of rarefied talent, fierce determination, and work. $13.99

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CDSharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CD / LP - Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This Spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in "The Game Gets Old" at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style "Mama Don't Like My Man" at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the "Daptone Sound" at its best. CD $14.98, LP $15.98

These were Brown's last two appearances at the event before passing away in September 2005. He is best known for his work as a blues musician, but embraced other styles of music, having "spent his career fighting purism by synthesizing old blues, country, jazz, Cajun music and R&B styles" (NY Times).
