Camp Barefoot 5 Photos

Check out photos from this year's Camp Barefoot 5: which featured an exhaustive & comprehensive collection of artists, plucked from varying genres and styles. Fans of funk, electronic, bluegrass, and more straightforward “jam” enjoyed many pockets of music to entertain themselves throughout the weekend.

The Home Grown Music Network is a proud sponsor of Camp Barefoot, and several of our bands were featured prominently on the bill for this year's festival.  Bands like SILO Effect, Funkuponya, and the Mantras were all selected for the festival numerous times, while others (Big Daddy Love, Big Something, UV Hippo, and Future Rock) made thier first appearance at Camp Barefoot this year.

Groove in the Holler, April 15-16 2011

Groove in the Holler, with a dose of hijinks and hilarity, proves to be an excellent weekend of musical camaraderie and cross-pollination.

gith1010Although marquee, big-name events like Jamcruise, Bear Creek, and others receive the lion's share of the press when it comes to the festival "scene," I've always had more fun at smaller festivals.  In these types of scenarios, the properties tend to be more manageable, easier to navigate, and not choked with every last social group on Earth.  With that parameter in mind, I found myself greatly anticipating this past weekend in Prospect Hill, North Carolina, where

Spring Fling 2010

This all-night rager brought out some of the most brilliant, up and coming artist in North Carolina to showcase their talent.

This year's Spring Fling was held near Elizabethton, TN on a little ol' place called Hob Knob Farm. Driving to Hob Knob Farm was no easy task. Writing down directions from the internet before I left, I thought to myself, "This looks pretty easy." (Not!)  It just so happens that lines in the directions were swapped, the farm road had no sign and the Spring Fling sign was facing the opposite direction. Whew!  So needless to say it took roughly 2 more hours to arrive than it should have.  I did get to see some amazing landscape

New Additions:

Keller Williams - ODD CDKeller Williams - ODD CD - "For my 14th release, I went with studio versions of road tested favorites. The only exception would be the the first track (environmental song) which has never before been played live. This collection of tunes was recorded and mixed by Jeff Covert at Wally Cleaver's Recording Studio in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He as well as Jay Starling, Claude Arthur and Doug Henderson make audio appearances, but this record is primarily a solo effort with me playing all the instruments (with the exception of a few drum loops). The art work was created by Richard Biffle. The idea came from the lyrics of my science fiction bluegrass song "elephorse", which is of course a cross between an elephant and a horse. But don't be confused. That's not the elephorse on the cover but the flying 2 headed dragon that befriends it. Please enjoy!" - Keller $15

The Ragbirds - Finally Almost Ready CDThe Ragbirds - Finally Almost Ready CD - The record features 12 tracks including many brand new Ragbirds songs. We had the honor of working with producer, fiddler and multi-instrumentalist, Tim Carbone (of Railroad Earth) and Phil Nicolo at Studio 4 in Philly who mixed and mastered the songs. Phil is a Grammy-Award-winning producer and engineer who has worked with an impressively long list of top performers. Here's what Phil had to say about the album: "I was pleasantly surprised to discover The Ragbirds new album to be a wonderful combination of clever songwriting and heartfelt performances. This will live in my CD player for a long while!"
Made from Eco-Friendly packaging, designed with a plastic tray made out of recycled plastic bottles, and printed with vegetable based inks. Each CD saves 6 plastic water bottles from being thrown in a landfill! $12

James Carter & John Medeski - Heaven on Earth CDJames Carter & John Medeski - Heaven on Earth CD - Saxophonist James Carter and organist John Medeski (of the pioneering jam-band, Medeski, Martin & Wood) lead a supergroup featuring Christian McBride (bass), Adam Rogers (guitar) and Joey Baron (drums). Together they carve out a groove that captures the buzz and vitality of jam-jazz at its most exhilerating. Recorded live at the Blue Note in New York, the group throws down the funk on Django Reinhardt's "Diminishing," Larry Young's "Heaven On Earth," Leo Parker's "Blue Leo," and the songbook standard, "Street Of Dreams." $16.98

Last Week:

- Great Possessions CDThe Giving Tree Band - Great Possessions CD - The Giving Tree Band's Great Possessions mirrors the timeless qualities of the folk-rock greats without sparing the quality arrangements and production of modern indie rock. Dubbed by the Chicago Sun-Times as "the greenest of albums," this 18-song collection augments its natural sound with carbon-neutral production: 100% solar-powered recording sessions, 100% recycled paperboard case, and biodegradable shrink wrap. $15.99

Jonah Smith - Lights On CDJonah Smith - Lights On CD - Images of love, war, natural disaster and political awakening weave through Jonah Smith's new album, Lights On. Its stories travel from country to city as we are taken from a lone man ice fishing in Cabin Fever to Brooklyn for a New Year's Eve celebration in the song Mrs. Cooper. Sonically, there is more consistency than Smith is likely to admit; he pulls from the deep well of American Blues and many of its offshoots: Soul, Country, and Folk to name a few. Essentially, he is a songwriter with the voice of a soul singer. $10.99

Boulder Acoustic Society - Punchline CDBoulder Acoustic Society - Punchline CD - The new full-length CD from the Boulder Acoustic Society is the new wave of acoustic Mountain Music: a combination of many traditional folk styles through a contemporary lens, all wrapped up in the band's virtuosic playing. Punchline also comes in an amazing, one-of-a-kind 3D stereoscope package. You gotta see it to believe it! $15.99

Wayne Krantz CDWayne Krantz - Krantz, Carlock, Lefebvre CD - The boldly inventive improvisations of guitarist Wayne Krantz have long held a fascination for fans of dynamic, uncompromised music. Ex-Sideman with Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Michael Brecker , Billy Cobham and many others, Krantz has focused on live performance for nearly two decades, holding down a residency at New York City's 55 Bar. Now, with Krantz Carlock Lefebvre, he is returning to a recording studio to document his own music for the first time in over fifteen years .

Krantz Carlock Lefebvre features Krantz as one-third of a longstanding trio that also includes virtuoso drummer Keith Carlock (Sting, Steely Dan, James Taylor) and bassist extraordinaire Tim Lefebvre (Chris Botti, Uri Caine), which was first convened in 1997. "Giving this band a voice in the context of a studio is a big deal for us," Krantz says. "Everything we've ever released together has been some kind of live album. Now we have the clarity and concision of the studio along for the ride." Cut live in the studio and then augmented by overdubs, the result is Krantz's most personal statement yet, more strongly rooted in composition while still rich with the improvisational nuances that make his live performances so riveting. Get ready for one of strongest musical statement of the year. $15.99

Camp Barefoot 3

Near-perfect weather, a secluded, pristine venue and a lineup you would never expect to see at a festival this size combined to make CB3 a rowdy good time.
breakfastLotus, Perpetual Groove, John Brown's Body, U-Melt, The Breakfast, The Bridge and Toubab Krewe were worth the admission price. Rounding out the roster with some talented regional acts was the proverbial icing on the cake. The estimated head count was 2100 at the peak, counting the one-day ticketholders.

New Monsoon - Live CD review

Camp Barefoot

New Additions:

Zach Deputy - Sunshine CDZach Deputy - Sunshine CD - Sunshine was conceived of as an effort to capture the feel and technique of Zach's live show, and much of it was recorded like he performs--in real time with layered loops. However, recording the live looping technique could conceal the chops and virtuosity of his live playing so Zach recorded 5 tracks with the support of the first rate musicians of Ryan Montbleau Band. Sunshine is thus a reflection of Zach's one man show and his front man/guitarist abilities. Each aspect of his artistry is captured by two radically different approaches to recording, which--although antithetical in many respects, neatly capture the essence of Zach Deputy and the intriguing, uplifting hybrid of soul, gospel, rhythm and blues, calypso and hip-hop that is his own inspired invention. $14.99

Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band - Greatest Hips Vol II CDYo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band - Greatest Hips Volume II CD - "Greatest Hips" is a series of live albums that are made up of selected songs that were multi-track recorded, and professionally mixed and mastered. These recordings act as a digital bookmark of a period of time in Booty Band history. Often referred to as a truly live experience and a very visual performance, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band has put together this compilation in order to bring the live experience of a show to your home, to your car, to your living room to re-live again and again. $13.99

Scythian - Live CDScythian - Live CD - Tracks include old standards like New York Girls, Devil Went Down to Georgia, Wisemaid Set, Gypsy Fiddle, My Son John, Hava Nagila and more! And we introduced some originals as well, with Cubicles and Tylenol, Dance All Night and Hey Mama Ya. 15 tracks in all, recorded in 11 different cities - don the dancing shoes and prep the taps for this one! $15

The Motet - Dig Deep CDThe Motet - Dig Deep CD - Dig Deep is a tapestry of sound that pushes the expectations of any listener who is familiar with the band's signature mix of afrobeat, electronica, funk, and jazz. Dig Deep presents The Motet revisited and refreshed, showcasing 12 great musicians who have contributed to the band over the years. Much of the material is geared toward the studio setting rather than their famed live shows, which is evident in Watts' rich production of interweaving rhythms and melodies. But in addition, every song on the 11-track album expresses the talents of these great musicians and plays well to the roots of the band's signature sound. $7.99

Amy Hendrickson & the Prime DirectiveAmy Hendrickson & the Prime Directive CD - This six song EP is well worth your time and money as each song showcases the band's creative versatility. Various genres of music such as: folk, rock, funk, alternative, jazz, blues and psychedelic experimentation are all represented on this one-of-a-kind musical journey. The lyrics are meaningful and heart-felt. The instrumentation has emotion and passion. The band has received tons of local, national and international radio airplay with rave reviews. You are sure to enjoy the debut of this band from the rich and diverse music scene of Saint Augustine, Florida USA $7.99

Clay Ross - Matuto CDClay Ross - Matuto CD - Matuto (ma-two-toe) is Brazilian slang for country bumpkin.  Imagine the sound of a Brazilian Carnaval in the Appalachian Mountains.  A sound where exotic percussion instruments rumble beneath blues drenched vocals, Telecaster twangs, and folksy fiddle tunes.  Now, imagine these sounds in the hands of some of NYC's finest young improvisers as they light up club and festival stages world wide. $12

Funkaponya CDFunkuponya - Funkuponya CD - Funkuponya, a quartet based out of Raleigh, North Carolina was formed by a chance meeting off Craigslist in the spring of 2008. Featuring Doug Carter on guitar, Brian Werner on keys, Leo Kishore on bass, and Carl Blackwell on drums, the band strives to create ear catching melodies mixed with heated improvised jams, resulting in a rhythmic experience that keeps the body moving. Polished guitar mingles with stratospheric keyboards to keep the audience on their toes. All the while, the no-nonsense rhythm section keeps the music honest and forward-moving. These are the new guys on the Southeast funk and jam scene. $11.99

MMW - Radiolarians III CDMMW - Radiolarians III CD - The third and final installment in their Radiolarians trilogy featuring the passionate and gritty traditional 'Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Down,' the anthemic 'Undone,' and the Latin-influenced acoustic opener 'Chantes Des Femmes.' Overall, Radiolarians III finds the trio doing what they do best - melding genres and improvising. What results, is maybe the strongest and most cohesive album of the entire Radiolarian's series. $15.99

Assembly of Dust - Some Assembly Required CDAssembly of Dust - Some Assembly Required CD - 'Some Assembly Required' contains the strongest collection of songs the group has created to date, each expertly crafted tune illuminated by a stellar lineup of guests. Every musician recruited lends their considerable talents in service of band leader Reid Genauer's skillful compositions, an inspired, inventive and spirited version of American rock and roots music. Each of Assembly of Dust's songs are realized with an ace band and a diverse collection of collaborators (including Bela Fleck, David Grisman, John Scofield, Mike Gordon, Richie Havens, Grace Potter, Jerry Douglas, Keller Williams, Mike Gordon, Tony Rice, Martin Sexton & more). $9.98

10ft Ganga Plant - Bush Rock10ft Ganga Plant - Bush Rock CD - "Bush Rock", is their most inspired and accomplished to date. Includes vocals by Kyle McDonald of Slightly Stoopid & features the core crew of 10 Ft. who are associated with John Brown's Body. "Bush Rock" shows the Plant growing to new heights, while keeping their feet firmly rooted in a warm 70's roots vibe. Standout tracks "Too Much Gun a Bust" & "Got To Be a Soldier" include powerful heart wrenching vocals reminiscent of the greats like Jacob Miller & Joe Higgs. Bush Rock is a well rounded reggae/dub excursion and features both heavy dub tracks and silky sweet songs like the Melodica driven "Machete Strike". $12.98

Rev Payton's Big Damn Band - The Whole Fam Damnily CDRev Payton's Big Damn Band - The Whole Fam Damnily CD - The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band may technically only be comprised of three people, but their name is no misnomer. Although the family-based act--which is comprised of fingerstyle guitarist Reverend Peyton, his wife and washboard player Breezy Peyton and drummer/brother Jayme Peyton--have only been around for three years, in that time period these country-blues aficionados from rural Indiana have played more than 250 shows annually and logged more miles on their van than most acts who have been around for a decade. "We end up playing with a lot of punk rock bands and any kind of roots acts from bluegrass to alt-country to rockabilly to you name it," the Reverend himself answers when asked what a typical Big Damn Band performance is like, "we'll play with anyone, really." $11.98

BACK IN STOCK!

SOJA - Get Wiser CdSOJA - Get Wiser CD - The second full-length album from the VA-based roots outfit Soldiers of Jah Army (SOJA), Get Wiser, absolutely reserves their place in the annals of roots Reggae history. Their diverse sound bears the signs of many influences, including elements of rock-n-roll, hip-hop, Latin rhytms, and of course, pure Roots Rock Reggae. Likewise, their ever-widening fan base covers the spectrum, far beyond simply hardcore Reggae enthusiasts. Get Wiser reveals a great deal of the growth and maturity one would hope to find in a sophomore release. A variety of styles and sounds abound, with typically melodic arrangements juxtaposed against pure DJ chants and rhymes. Lead singer Jacob Hemphill's trademark throaty vocals lend an earthy feel, while tight arrangements and dead-on drum and bass energize and move the recording forward. Add some sheer rock guitar riffs and a generous helping of dubbed-out special effects, and you have the recipe for some quality listening. $13

Leftover Salmon & Cracker - O' Cracker CDLeftover Salmon & Cracker - O' Cracker Where Art Thou CD - This CD is just as unreal as it's premise indicates! Worlds collide on this new release, which features the pop-soul songs of Cracker being re-interpreted with the music supplied by Leftover Salmon. All your early 90s faves are here..."Low", "Get Off This", "Eurotrash Girl"...but they've had their DNA altered by the slamgrass crazies in LOS! Backwoods alternative! $9.99
