Avett Brothers - Live Vol 3 DVD - This electric performance was recorded on August 8, 2009 at Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, NC. A special thrill for the band after seeing artists like Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Queen and Bob Dylan grace this same stage. Live, Volume 3 will feature material culled from their decade-long career including their most recent, critically acclaimed album I and Love and You. Live, Volume 3 showcases the amazing live performances that have helped The Avett Brothers build a legion of loyal fans; growing exponentially with each release, performance and appearance. Live, Volume 3 DVD is comprised of highlights from the Bojangles Coliseum, shot in HD and mixed by Ryan Hewitt, the engineer/mixer of I and Love and You. Additionally, the DVD includes documentary-style episodes, interspersed with interviews from the band and fans in attendance.

Widespread Panic - Johnson City 2001 (3 CDs) -With the official Widespread Panic Archives release of Johnson City 2001 that night's performance continues to take us everywhere....with old tunes, new tunes, borrowed tunes, blue tunes...and even a "Happy Birthday" for Todd. Straight from the "L.a." opener, this show just wasn't in a hurry. And to quickly prove it, "Ain't No Use," "Impossible," and "Worry" all realized their opportunity to stretch the body and mind before the band gave everyone a chance to catch their breath with a rare rendition of the previously unreleased "New Blue." A nice run to the end of the first set included a "Stop Go" reminding us that even though the set was almost over, everything was going to be alright. After instantly finding the 2nd set groove with "Weak Brain", the relatively new "Old Neighborhood" and the always-welcome "Trouble" continued to exhibit the night's patience. From that point, this show just didn't stop or disappoint....with creatively inspired renditions of "Love Tractor," "Pigeons" and "Airplane," and even an all-out, bass-driven "Astronomy Domine" jam from the drums. Mikey put his idyllic touch on the evening with "The Waker" before the band finished up the second set with "She Caught the Katy," a tune normally reserved for sound checks. The first of the night's two encores was certainly fit for a Tuesday with "Gimme" before they finally sent everyone off into that cold Tennessee night with nothing but a "Chunk of Coal" and, of course, a smile on everybody's face.

Frank Zappa - The Torture Never Stops DVD - Frank Zappa's New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed Live at The Palladium. This 'thing' entitled "The Torture Never Stops" was created in its entirety by FZ from the original concert production and intended by the Artist as one of 3 Television Specials. This is the longest version of the three - the others, "You Are What You Is" and "Dumb All Over", having actually aired. Halloween was Frank Zappa's favorite holiday, and New York was the site of Frank Zappa Halloween concerts for years! The billion and a half airings by MTV of the concerts (non-edited) followed on closely from the release of the double album "You Are What You Is" in September of that year on Frank Zappa's own recently founded and thoroughly independent label, Barking Pumpkin. Much of the set list is drawn from that work. All Frank Zappa shows were unique experiences with Zappa on guitar and baton, leading his band on flights of improvisation and drawing ever more intense performances from them. "The Torture Never Stops" cements Zappa's reputation as one of the most innovative and challenging composers and performers of the 20th century.

Discordian Society - Primordial Soup CD - The Discordian Society, is an eclectic combination of funk, jazz and rock, with influences that range from Zappa and John Zorn, to Jaco Pastorius and Les Claypool. Dave "Davz Not Here" Annarelli started the Discordian Society in the spring of 2001. Dave set out to make his own path with his own music and a different philosophy based in genre bending, originality, and a drive to sound as different as possible. In 2010 Discordian Society releases the long awaited "Primordial Soup". It has garnered excellent reviews and is slowly working its way up the charts. With the success of "Primordial Soup", regional and national touring, and rave reviews of their live performance, Dave's Discordian Society has etched a place in the musical landscape in which lovers of all genres can find a scenic view. With the recent announcement of a 3rd album slated for 2011, Discordian Society is quickly finding itself on the radar as a band to be watched.

Superfrog - Call From the Moon CD -Superfrog is the fiery 6 piece you must see to believe. Their groovetastic, jammy soundscapes are twisted into a rock and roll reggae sandwich sporting an original, rhythmic and bouncy sound. The delightfully soundgasmic music flows through them like some sort of intangible astral conduit. Certainly a band that is this fun, diverse, adventurous and fresh should be heard as often as possible.

On "Call From the Moon" Superfrog continues to reveal the essence of jam within a framework of ROCK. This feat has been causing people all over the Northeast to jump out of their seats and into the air many times over. Their high powered live show is always an intense experience where the only thing shaking harder than the stage is the floor under the fans.

The Nucleus - Quicksand CD - Ten years in and with numerous national tours and albums, the Nucleus has settled into its groove as an adventurous and versatile Rock and Roll band. Based in Northern California but having spent considerable time throughout the country, they have amassed a wealth of experience and influences that continues to shape their sound.

The Nucleus' latest release, Quicksand, catches the band at the peak of its studio production and songwriting strengths. With a concise seven songs, the album is dense and propulsive while taking the listener on an unmistakable journey. The opening track "Truckstop" has the feel of a classic southern-rock anthem with its gritty guitar riffs, funky roadhouse piano and memorable chorus. The piano driven "Water into Wine" takes a more modern turn with its polyrhythmic dance-influenced beat, hypnotic chords and pertinent lyrics. Nomore Anything is an existential rocker with rich atmospherics and punchy choruses that evolves into a fiery rave-up.

A solid listen throughout, Quicksand is an intriguing snapshot of a decade-old band telling its story and of the world we are all trying to survive in.

John Scofield - New Morning: The Paris Concert DVD - John Scofield is considered one of the most important and influential jazz guitarists and composers since he arrived on the scene in the mid seventies. A masterful improviser at the peak of his creative art, Scofield revisits today compositions & interpretations richly combining post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R&B influences. The New Morning is deeply honored to welcome this 2010 performance by John Scofield (backed by master drummer Bill Stewart, bassist Ben Street and pianist Michael Eckroth) to its series of DVDs dedicated to the great musicians of the Sons of Miles generation. A veteran alum, John toured & recorded with Miles for nearly four years in the eighties.

Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown - Live at JazzFest 2004 & 2005 (2 CDs) - Professionally recorded at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. These were Brown's last two appearances at the event before passing away in September 2005. He is best known for his work as a blues musician, but embraced other styles of music, having "spent his career fighting purism by synthesizing old blues, country, jazz, Cajun music and R&B styles" (NY Times). He was an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, who played an array of musical instruments such as guitar, fiddle, mandolin, viola as well as harmonica and drums. He won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album in 1982 for his album, Alright Again! (2 CDs $23)

The Station - Speed of Sound - Live at Marley's (2 CDs) - The Station balances its jams on a metallic edge, adds a dash of funky machismo and even summons its Southern-rock roots to provide a fine introduction for new listeners. Despite a running time of nearly two-and-a-half hours -- all but two of these 12 songs clock in at longer than 10 minutes -- Speed of Sound remains a far-from-laborious listen. Mark 0'Connor's Hot Swing Trio CD - Acoustic, progressive violin and Django-style guitar jazz played by Mark O'Connor and his Hot Swing Trio featuring Frank Vignola and Jon Burr. Frank Zappa - The Dub Room Special CD - All tracks are previously unreleased on CD and with the exception of the Token Vamp which appeared for the first time in The Dub Room Special. "The basic tracks from Inca Roads & Florentine Pogen were recorded live at KCET during the production of our TV special", writes FZ on One Size Fits All (1975). This equally thoroughly rejected television program is know as A Token Of His Extreme. $17.98

Frank Zappa - Wazoo (2 Live CDs) - Wazoo is a live album by Frank Zappa, posthumously released. It is a 2-CD set consisting of the complete concert with "The Mothers of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo" 20-piece big band at the Boston Music Hall on September 24, 1972. It is the last concert of a brief series of shows that marked Zappa's return to the stage after his forced temporary retirement from the touring scene due to the injuries he suffered from an assault during a concert at the Rainbow Theater in London on December 10, 1971. The material showcases Zappa's endeavors into jazz-based music, and many of the compositions were featured on the 1972 studio albums The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka and on the 1978 studio album Studio Tan. Rehearsals leading to these albums and concerts are documented on Joe's Domage (2004), while Imaginary Diseases (2006) presents live recordings with a stripped-down version of the big band named "Petite Wazoo." $28.98

Rodrigo y Gabriela LP - 180-gram vinyl LP version. Also includes the full album on CD. On their 2006 self-titled album, Rodrigo y Gabriela offer up a fierce set of acoustic instrumentals that garnered the Mexican guitar duo international attention. Technically accomplished, playful, and emotive, these tracks work in the flamenco and folk vernaculars while reverberating with rock energy, as revealed on the fleet-fingered "Tamacun" and the highly percussive "Diablo Rojo." However, the real showstoppers are the pair's excellent covers of Metallica's "Orion" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," which both honor the hard-rock originals, and resonate with impressive added flourishes. $19.99


Various Artists - Southern Rock Christmas CD - How difficult would it be for a classic rock fan to dig the Phil Spector-inspired "Jingle Bell Rock" by 38 Special or to head-bop to George Thorogood's "Rock and Roll Christmas," or twist (yes, twist) to Foghat's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," sounding like they're invoking the very spirit of Roy Orbison? It wouldn't be difficult at all. Then get another eggnog and toast Steve Morse's uplifting instrumental version of "Joy to the World," the hip-shaking beat of "Winter Wonderland" by the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the aptly named "Christmas Blues" by Canned Heat. The album's closing track is a warm, up-tempo version of "Silent Night" by Elvin Bishop. There's enough rocking holiday fare here for those who like their rock aged and Southern fried. $11.99


Wynton Marsalis - Crescent City Christmas Card CD - Christmas jazz albums come and go with each end-of-year holiday season. And while they may make for good soundtracks to that holiday spirit, rarely do they stand up as much more than that, and certainly not as anything approaching a serious listen. While the material here may be rendered in the familiar Christmas spirit of good cheer (check out Wynton Marsalis on the back cover with mismatched green and red socks decking out his white suit), and the songs are in the familiar Christian tradition of the holiday, the arrangements are fresh and are delivered with memorable turns on "Silent Night" by opera diva Kathleen Battle, and on "Sleigh Ride" by Jon Hendricks. The playing is spirited and the material is dealt with in a manner suggesting great care in both delivery and arrangement. $8.99


Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 4 (2 CDs) - YCDTOSA Vol. 4 was released in 1991, with recordings ranging from 1969 to 1988. First time appearance for 11 songs. Because of the huge time span, there's an enormous list of musicians, including FZ on lead guitar & vocals, Captain Beefheart (handling vocals and harmonica on "The Torture Never Stops"), the mid-70's band, the '79 band, the `82 band, the `84 band, the `88 band, and even 2 Mothers tracks from 1969 ("You Call That Music?" and "Tiny Sick Tears") -- Lowell George appears on both. Archie Shepp guests on tenor sax solo on "Let's Move To Cleveland" from 1984 (Amherst MA). There's also a smelly-beard routine involving George Duke; a "Montana" that segues two versions from 12 years apart; and a version of "Stevie's Spanking" with Steve Vai playing one of his best solos, doubtlessly inspired by the events described in the lyric. $17.99

Mike Musick - Honest CD - If you like great songs you can sing in the car or in the shower with words that just might change your life, this album is for you. Del McCoury - The Best of Del McCoury: The GrooveGrass Years CD - A few short years before Del McCoury reached his peak in popularity, he put together a band that would prove to be one of the most potent and powerful in Bluegrass music. After leaving the Rounder label with the want to move forward and push the boundaries of Bluegrass, Del signed on to be a part of an elite group of musicians, engineers and producers that would become known as The GrooveGrass Boyz. At that point The Del McCoury Band would record what would arguably become the best sounding, hardest hitting Bluegrass of his career. He recorded for the first time with icons Doc Watson, Mac Wiseman and Bootsy Collins. Though this album contains 9 Bluegrass tracks and only one GrooveGrass track, the Bill Monroe classic "Can't You Hear Me Calling" with Funk pioneer and icon Bootsy Collins, the impact of the stylistic convergence is noticeable in every song. $15.98

Ralph Stanley - Old Time Pickin': A Clawhammer Banjo Collection CD - Ralph Stanley established himself long ago as America's foremost singer of traditional mountain music. His instantly recognizable voice has earned him Grammys, a Grand Ole Opry membership, an honorary doctorate degree, a place in the bluegrass hall of fame, and a living. Ralph has, for the most part, set aside the banjo in his live performances for several years, but he usually picks it up for at least one rollicking, crowd-pleasing "clawhammer number." For a man who helped establish the bluegrass genre, it is fun to watch him return to the old-time mountain style of playing that he learned from his mother when he was 11. The eighteen songs on this collection represent nearly 30 years of recording for Stanley. Most of the clawhammer songs he recorded for Rebel Records are here, including nine previously unreleased tracks. $9.98

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Memories DVD - Magical Mystery Tour was the first Beatles film project following the death of manager Brian Epstein in August 1967. The film was unscripted as various 'ordinary' people traveled on a charabanc bus, having 'magical' adventures en route. The movie soundtrack was released in the UK in December 1967 and in 1968 received a Grammy Award. Magical Mystery Tour Memories is an upbeat rockumentary featuring the vivid memories of those who witnessed the making of the movie and features a celebrity cast along with anecdotal stories and unseen 8mm home movie footage, as well as eyewitness accounts from fans, onlookers and the cast of the movie. "This is a happy, upbeat film" comments David Lambert, producer and director of Arthouse Pictures, who produced the movie. "Probably the last time the Fab Four were all still getting along." Keith Badman (author and Beatles expert) said "I have seen the rough cut screener and can't wait to see the finished program. It is fantastic." This film is a must have for all Beatles fans worldwide and an opportunity to look back fondly at the heady days of the swinging 60s. $19.95

Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3 (2 CDs) - These 25 tracks were recorded between 1971 and 1984, although most of it is from the 1984 tour. Of special interest is the first track, "Sharleena," recorded December 23, 1984. On it, 15-year old Dweezil joins his father on guitar, the first time they played together onstage. Also of special interest is a live version of "King Kong" that includes FZ's guitar solo from the notorious Rainbow Theater show of 1971. It was during this very number that an overreacting audience member, whose girlfriend claimed to be in love with Frank, chose to jump onstage and knock FZ into the orchestra pit; he wound up in the hospital and wouldn't perform for the remainder of the year. This solo is deftly edited into a 1982 performance of the same tune. On the lighter side, there's an '84 performance of "Bamboozled by Love" where the band slides into a Yes riff that you'll probably recognize. $17.99

In direct contrast to they way things are usually done, MMW decided to spend 2008 composing the skeleton of new music, taking it on the road to flesh out the composition, and finally putting the (by now well played) notes down as tracks. Grateful Dead - Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978 (2 CDs & 1 DVD) - Good things come to those who wait! It took 30 years to produce this 2CD/DVD set from the Dead's legendary September 1978 run at the Sound & Light Theater outside Cairo, nestled in the dunes just a short mummy-walk from the Great Pyramid and the mysterious Sphinx. This beautiful and historic package includes two exceptional music CDs and a DVD with over 95 minutes of concert footage from the Egypt shows (plus an impressionistic "Vacation Tapes" mini-documentary that shows the band and Dead family at play). The DVD concert material has been mixed in both stereo and surround sound, with two listening options (DTS 5.1 and PCM Stereo). The beautifully designed booklet (with cover inspired by the late, great Alton Kelley's Egypt 1978 tour poster) contains a revealing essay by longtime Ice Nine Publishing chief and Egypt trip co-organizer Alan Trist, and many rare photos. All that's missing is sand, the smell of camels and some "hubbly-bubbly"! $34.98

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Jingle All the Way CD - Bela Fleck, often considered the premiere banjo player in the world, has made a name for himself as a virtuoso instrumentalist unbounded by genre. His band The Flecktones - Victor Wooten on electric bass, Jeff Coffin on sax and flute, and Future Man on percussion - are equally talented and adventurous as Fleck himself, and together they have made a string of critically acclaimed albums that combine bluegrass, jazz, funk and world music with technical prowess, unlimited imagination and occasional zaniness. John Brown's Body - Amplify CD - An explosive album featuring twelve tracks of drum & bass-heavy dub-inflected electro grooves that make up the sound JBB is known for, with a forward-thinking, fearless approach to tempos, beats, and feel that expands the genre of roots reggae as a whole. Oneside - First, to Last CD - Few "neo-traditionalists" have dared to stray too far from the "traditionalist" part of that equation. Fans of the genre tend to be fervently purist. Boston-based band Oneside, however, isn't afraid to risk biting the hand that feeds it. Oneside's debut album, First, To Last, is full of structures, lyrics, and licks that are unabashedly plucked from the traditional American canon. Songs like "Lisa" and "Got To Go" would sound perfectly at home on a Nickel Creek or Alison Krauss album. But right from the opening track, it is apparent that Oneside isn't afraid to make departures from traditional styles. Other songs would fit right in on a Sufjan Stevens or even a Radiohead album. Other bands may play strictly in a conventional roots style, but what sets Oneside apart is their willingness to take these traditional fundamentals and place them firmly in a modern context. $12.99

The Bongolian - Outer Bongolia CD - Nasser Bouzida, aka The Bongolian, is found in his element on Outer Bongolia! He embarks on a psychedelic musical trip to the outer regions of the Funk galaxy, taking in spaced-out heavy Bongo rhythms and Latin Soul along the way creating 100% original dance floor rhythms. Instruments featured include the Hammond, Bongos, Synthesizers, and Vibes. Drawing on all his past influences, Nasser produced an inspired recording blending elements of Funk, Soul and Jazz with grinding percussion and heavy Bongo rhythms. $14.99

Big Boss Man - Winner CD - Big Boss Man's second album was produced by the band and Morgan Nicholls (The Streets/Muse). Morgan is the son of Immediate Records in-house songwriter Billy Nicholls, so the studio was choc-full of groovy stuff: The Who's Hammond, Steve Marriott's first guitar, Clavinets, Wurlitzers, etc, all of which were put to good use on the album! Morgan was also involved in the recent Big Boss Man seven-inch only remix of Paul Weller's Top 20 single "The Bottle." Winner continues the trip through 60's funk, along the way taking in bongo/fuzz sounds in "Everybody Boogaloo," Latin soul in "Complicated Lady," French beat in "Tu As Gach," floor-fillers such as "Kelvin Stardust," and general Hammond/Moog mentalness everywhere else. $14.99

Jah Roots - Joy CD - Jah Roots has quickly gained a hard-earned reputation as one of America's most talented homegrown reggae bands. Lead singer Ras Josh perfectly employs his soulful, fervent vocals as an instrument for delivering thought-provoking lyrical content in which themes of love, oppression and spirituality are often explored. Joy was recorded at Lion & Fox Studios in Washington, known internationally as America's preeminent reggae recording studios. The recording of Joy proved to be Jah Roots' first exposure to creating new music in such a high caliber facility, and the benefits of this opportunity are clearly evidenced in every resulting track. Once in the studio, Jah Roots were joined by legendary reggae guitarist Junior Marvin, who served as lead guitarist for Bob Marley & The Wailers from 1977-80. He contributed lead guitar on "Spliff & My Lady" and "Ganja Weed." His skilled efforts serve not only to decorate the two tracks on which he plays, but to imbue the entire album with a timelessness and brilliance that any true Bob Marley fan will recognize. $12.99

Dungen - 4 CD - The ten tracks on 4 comprise Dungen's most concentrated effort to date, beats surging forth and atmosphere changing as their sound continues to evolve. Every song here runs under five minutes, pushing the group to introduce their confident melodies and arresting ambiance in tighter frameworks. Gauging from the results, this challenge has done them well. Included in this set are the live favorite "Mina Damer och Fasaner," excerpts from a wild psychedelic jam session entitled "Samtidigt," and a storming, Northern Soul-influenced instrumental entitled "Fredag." These stand tall with some of the most fully-realized moments of Dungen's career - percolating prog-pop groover "Det Tar Tid" and eloquent opener "Satt At Se." $12.98

Traffic - Live at Santa Monica DVD - On DVD for the first time! Get up close and personal with Traffic in this 1972 show from Santa Monica, CA. The filmmaker's focus is squarely on the band in this one, as the viewer is presented with a myriad of camera angles from which to experience Winwood and Company's stirring soul-rock! $19.99

Asylum Street Spankers - What? And Give Up Show Biz? (2 CDs) - This hilarious 2-disc live show incorporates the feel of a "revue" to present the Asylum Street Spankers' whacked-out version of traditional music. Turning the innocent sounds of early jazz, swing, acoustic, and bluegrass on their collective ear, the Spankers combine amazing instrumental talent with a Hollywood-worthy sense of humor and presentation, creating a zany yet fulfilling musical experience. $21.95

Sabertooth - Dr. Midnight: Live at the Green Mill CD - This is the most fun you'll ever have with bebop music! Sabertooth is by far the most talented, most inventive, most entertaining traditionally-oriented jazz act in Chicago. Saxophonists Cameron Pfiffner and Pat Mallinger are exciting jazz players who evoke the spirit of historic saxophone tandems like Johnny Griffin & Eddie Davis or Sonny Stitt & Gene Ammons. They formed Sabertooth in 1990 and have been doing the Saturday night After Hours Jazz Party from midnight to 5 AM at Chicago's historic Green Mill jazz club for fifteen years. The incomparable Pete Benson has been Sabertooth's organist for five years, contributing the low end and the fabulous organ melodies and solos, and the group is anchored by the uber-diverse Rebel Souls drummer Ted Sirota. It's not everyday you hear virtuoso players performing jazz with such humor and intensity - witness their interpretation of the Grateful Dead's "China Cat," and see jazz nazis run in fear! Cut loose to the sound of the hilariously titled "It's Surely Gonna Flop If It Ain't Got That Bop!" It's all here folks! $16.98

Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls - Breeding Resistance CD - The Berklee-trained Sirota brings together jazz, afrobeat, blues, reggae, and R&B on this release! Featuring Chicago luminaries all around (including Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker), this album breathes fire with politically charged afrobeat rhythms driving the musicians to create danceable, thought-provoking songs. The album mashes the Chicago school of jazz with far-flung elements of world music, as elegant musicianship is bolstered by a heartbeat of rebellious rhythm. "This CD is dedicated to the spirit of resistance and struggle against oppression. Although often dismissed and glossed over as mere entertainment, Jazz and Blues music are rooted in the struggle against oppression and the forces of reaction. Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2 (2 CDs) - Departing from the live-compilation format of YCDTOSA Vol. 1, Volume Two is the only installment to include a complete show - Sept. 22, 1974, in Helsinki, Finland, to be exact. The Apostrophe-era band (with George Duke on keyboards, Napoleon Murphy Brock on sax, Ruth Underwood on percussion/marimba, Tom Fowler on bass and future Genesis member Chester Thompson on drums) had never played better, and this set includes long stretches of brilliant instrumental work on "Dupree's Paradise," "Inca Roads" and "Approximate." Also here is the definitive version of the "Village of the Sun" suite and a long version of "Montana" that keeps threatening to turn into "Whippin' Post." $17.99

The Herbaliser - Same As It Never Was CD - Blending hip-hop, sampled breaks, and jazz, The Herbaliser have, with their five Ninja Tune full lengths, remained stalwarts of the creative downtempo scene for more than a decade. Same As It Never Was is a brand new effort, and the first with the group's new five piece line-up including lead vocalist Jessica Darling. It's clear that The Herbaliser's evolution is still in progress. As the title suggests, Same As It Never Was sees The Herbaliser employing more of a live band sound (indicative of their transition from a duo to a five piece), showing that they can produce scratchy funk to rival groups like the Dap Kings.
