In 2013 Eight years of incessant touring have garnered a sizable fan base across the country. Grammy winner producer, John Porter, comes on board to record their first national release, Cane Sugar . It is Honey Island Swamp Band's own special brew Bayou Americana - a blend of Blues, Southern rock boogie, Appalachian music and New Orleans swamp funk that is decidedly all their own.

Roots of Creation CD/DVDRoots of Creation - Live at Bella Terra Festival (. . . And Stoned at Church) CD/DVD - 2013 New England Music Award Winners, Roots of Creation, mix roots and dub reggae with guitar-heavy rock and electronica, all wrapped around lead singer/guitarist Brett Wilson’s introspective and consciousness laden lyrics.

RoC’s newest release, a DVD/CD set, Live at Bella Terra Festival (. . . And Stoned at Church), captures the band as a five-piece, during a tour, from the east coast to Chicago to Eastern Canada, in August 2011. At Bella Terra in Stephentown, NY, RoC performed directly after the headliner, Mickey Hart. As thousands of fans poured from the main stage over to the late-night tent, ROC delivered a truly unique music experience with thumping reggae bass lines, piercing guitar licks, and an electronic-dub sound only this band could create.

The Royal NoiseThe Royal Noise - Unbreakable CD - Philadelphia’s premier jazz-funk collective has quickly established itself as a high energy, grooving crew. Drawing from vintage and contemporary influences alike, they are forging an ebullient fusion of sinewy funk, gritty jazz, psychedelic rock and live hip-hop elements with a distinctly southern flavor, reminiscent of funk fusion acts like Herbie Hancock, Lost Tribe, Lettuce and Mother Funk Conspiracy.

This is the group's second studio release, produced by Shane Baldwin at Elevated Basement in Savannah, GA. Their latest efforts feature infectious grooves, hypnotic melodies and an evolution in sonic textures, drawing influence from such acts as Frank Zappa and mid-period Herbie Hancock, as this "bunch of rhythm devils" (Brian Robbins, Jambands.com) continues to redefine modern jazz-funk fusion. Also available: The Royal Noise - Keep On Moving CD

Sonny Moorman GroupSonny Moorman Group - More Live as Hell CD - Noted music Journalist Randy McNutt may have said it best, "He can flat-out play—and sing... Robert Randolph & the Family BandRobert Randolph & The Family Band - Lickety Split CD - When Robert Randolph talks about his new album, Lickety Split, a few words come up over and over—"joy," "freedom," "energy." Which is no surprise, really, because those are the same things that immediately spring into a listener's mind when these twelve tracks from the virtuoso pedal steel guitarist and his longtime accompanists, the Family Band, explode out of the speakers.

"My thing is really upbeat, uptempo, with great guitar riffs," says Randolph, summarizing his musical ambitions, "but also catchy choruses and lyrics that someday will make this music into classic tunes."

Widespread Panic - Johnson City 2001 (3 CDs)Widespread Panic - Johnson City 2001 (3 CDs) -With the official Widespread Panic Archives release of Johnson City 2001 that night's performance continues to take us everywhere....with old tunes, new tunes, borrowed tunes, blue tunes...and even a "Happy Birthday" for Todd. Straight from the "L.a." opener, this show just wasn't in a hurry. And to quickly prove it, "Ain't No Use," "Impossible," and "Worry" all realized their opportunity to stretch the body and mind before the band gave everyone a chance to catch their breath with a rare rendition of the previously unreleased "New Blue." A nice run to the end of the first set included a "Stop Go" reminding us that even though the set was almost over, everything was going to be alright. After instantly finding the 2nd set groove with "Weak Brain", the relatively new "Old Neighborhood" and the always-welcome "Trouble" continued to exhibit the night's patience. From that point, this show just didn't stop or disappoint....with creatively inspired renditions of "Love Tractor," "Pigeons" and "Airplane," and even an all-out, bass-driven "Astronomy Domine" jam from the drums. Mikey put his idyllic touch on the evening with "The Waker" before the band finished up the second set with "She Caught the Katy," a tune normally reserved for sound checks. The first of the night's two encores was certainly fit for a Tuesday with "Gimme" before they finally sent everyone off into that cold Tennessee night with nothing but a "Chunk of Coal" and, of course, a smile on everybody's face.

Frank Zappa - The Torture Never Stops DVDFrank Zappa - The Torture Never Stops DVD - Frank Zappa's New York Halloween 1981 concerts were filmed Live at The Palladium. This 'thing' entitled "The Torture Never Stops" was created in its entirety by FZ from the original concert production and intended by the Artist as one of 3 Television Specials. This is the longest version of the three - the others, "You Are What You Is" and "Dumb All Over", having actually aired. Halloween was Frank Zappa's favorite holiday, and New York was the site of Frank Zappa Halloween concerts for years! The billion and a half airings by MTV of the concerts (non-edited) followed on closely from the release of the double album "You Are What You Is" in September of that year on Frank Zappa's own recently founded and thoroughly independent label, Barking Pumpkin. Much of the set list is drawn from that work. All Frank Zappa shows were unique experiences with Zappa on guitar and baton, leading his band on flights of improvisation and drawing ever more intense performances from them. "The Torture Never Stops" cements Zappa's reputation as one of the most innovative and challenging composers and performers of the 20th century.

Discordian Society - Primordial Soup CDDiscordian Society - Primordial Soup CD - The Discordian Society, is an eclectic combination of funk, jazz and rock, with influences that range from Zappa and John Zorn, to Jaco Pastorius and Les Claypool. Dave "Davz Not Here" Annarelli started the Discordian Society in the spring of 2001. Dave set out to make his own path with his own music and a different philosophy based in genre bending, originality, and a drive to sound as different as possible. In 2010 Discordian Society releases the long awaited "Primordial Soup". It has garnered excellent reviews and is slowly working its way up the charts. With the success of "Primordial Soup", regional and national touring, and rave reviews of their live performance, Dave's Discordian Society has etched a place in the musical landscape in which lovers of all genres can find a scenic view. With the recent announcement of a 3rd album slated for 2011, Discordian Society is quickly finding itself on the radar as a band to be watched.

The New Mastersounds - Masterology CDThe New Mastersounds - Masterology CD - Sundazed Music has assembled Masterology: The Pioneers of New British Funk, which collects a career-spanning selection of highlights from the New Mastersounds' catalog, along with a scintillating smattering of rarities. Distilling the band's widescreen sonic vision into a massively impressive package, it's a monumental testament to the New Mastersounds' seminal body of work. The CD features 19 tracks drawn from the quartet's history, It's a killer celebration of the New Mastersounds' international funk uprising!

Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Almost Acoustic CDSuperfrog - Call From the Moon CD -Superfrog is the fiery 6 piece you must see to believe. Their groovetastic, jammy soundscapes are twisted into a rock and roll reggae sandwich sporting an original, rhythmic and bouncy sound. The delightfully soundgasmic music flows through them like some sort of intangible astral conduit. Certainly a band that is this fun, diverse, adventurous and fresh should be heard as often as possible.

On "Call From the Moon" Superfrog continues to reveal the essence of jam within a framework of ROCK. This feat has been causing people all over the Northeast to jump out of their seats and into the air many times over. Their high powered live show is always an intense experience where the only thing shaking harder than the stage is the floor under the fans.

The Nucleus - Quicksand CDThe Nucleus - Quicksand CD - Ten years in and with numerous national tours and albums, the Nucleus has settled into its groove as an adventurous and versatile Rock and Roll band. Based in Northern California but having spent considerable time throughout the country, they have amassed a wealth of experience and influences that continues to shape their sound.

The Nucleus' latest release, Quicksand, catches the band at the peak of its studio production and songwriting strengths. With a concise seven songs, the album is dense and propulsive while taking the listener on an unmistakable journey. The opening track "Truckstop" has the feel of a classic southern-rock anthem with its gritty guitar riffs, funky roadhouse piano and memorable chorus. The piano driven "Water into Wine" takes a more modern turn with its polyrhythmic dance-influenced beat, hypnotic chords and pertinent lyrics. Nomore Anything is an existential rocker with rich atmospherics and punchy choruses that evolves into a fiery rave-up.

A solid listen throughout, Quicksand is an intriguing snapshot of a decade-old band telling its story and of the world we are all trying to survive in.

Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band - Ragged But Right CDJohn Scofield - New Morning: The Paris Concert DVD - John Scofield is considered one of the most important and influential jazz guitarists and composers since he arrived on the scene in the mid seventies. A masterful improviser at the peak of his creative art, Scofield revisits today compositions & interpretations richly combining post-bop, funk edged jazz, and R&B influences. The New Morning is deeply honored to welcome this 2010 performance by John Scofield (backed by master drummer Bill Stewart, bassist Ben Street and pianist Michael Eckroth) to its series of DVDs dedicated to the great musicians of the Sons of Miles generation. A veteran alum, John toured & recorded with Miles for nearly four years in the eighties.

Says Moore: "Groove Alchemy reflects the program that I have put myself through to improve my own funk and groove playing. It s a groove boot camp that will vastly increase your knowledge of classic grooves and more importantly, will also ignite your imagination and make you a funkier and more creative drummer." On the 3-hour Groove Alchemy DVD, Stanton presents a historical overview of some of the most important drum grooves in history, showing the basic elements and conceptual development of each groove. He then shows you how to learn from the past and develop your own complete vocabulary for creating new funk grooves and patterns on the drumset. Starting with an in-depth study of the James Brown drummers (especially Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks) and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, Groove Alchemy goes far beyond a mere history lesson by applying Stanton's concepts for making your own playing more creative, musical, and funky. Topics include using variation and style combination to create new grooves, using rhythmic structures and clave ideas for advanced drum set vocabulary, hi-hat concepts, getting creative with backbeat grooves, a look at how to develop swing and shuffle grooves, and more. Intercut with the educational segments, Stanton s trio also performs new tracks from their latest CD (also called Groove Alchemy, Telarc Records), showing how many of the grooves discussed are applied directly to the music. Bonus features include slow-motion segments of key grooves.

The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ('Lilac Wine'), Olivia Safe ('Elegy For Dunkirk'), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ('I Put A Spell On You' and 'There s No Other Me').
To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini's immortal aria 'Nessun Dorma' and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley's interpretation of 'Corpus Christi Carol.' $18.98

Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CDSharon Jones & the Dap Kings - I Learned the Hard Way CD / LP - Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are already well known as one of the most exciting acts in the nation for both their explosive live shows and their prolific output of gritty studio recordings. Their breakout release, 100 Days, 100 Nights, sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. This Spring the band will release I Learned the Hard Way, their fourth full-length on Brooklyn's independent Daptone Records. The record marks a bold step forward for a band who almost single handedly stewarded today's return of soul music to its more traditional sound.

Produced by Bosco Mann and recorded on an Ampex eight-track tape machine by Gabriel Roth in Daptone Records' House of Soul studios, the record drips with a warmth and spontaneity rarely found since the golden days of Muscle Shoals and Stax. Sharon's raw power, rhythmic swagger, moaning soulfulness, and melodic command set her firmly alongside Tina Turner, James Brown, Mavis Staples, and Aretha as a fixture in the canon of soul music. From the lush Philly-Soul fanfare that ushers in "The Game Gets Old" at the top of the record, to the stripped down Sam Cooke-style "Mama Don't Like My Man" at the tail, the Dap-Kings dance seamlessly through both the most crafted and simple arrangements with subtlety and discipline. I Learned the Hard Way is the "Daptone Sound" at its best. CD $14.98, LP $15.98

New Additions:

Umphrey's McGee - Mantis - Over 2 years in the making, Mantis pushes the envelope in composition, arrangement and group interplay. And in an Umphrey's McGee first, the album offers 100% new material - a drastic change of pace for a band whose typical modus operandi is to work out the material live on-stage before recording studio versions. CD $14.99 / LP $15.99

Euphonic Brew - In a Sea of Stained Glass CD - Euphonic Brew presents a fascinating journey through a wide variety of musical styles and moods, all underpinned by the band's remarkable chordal composition and fantastic sense of melody. This makes every stop on the trip a memorable one, regardless of the scenery which can range from driving rock and riveting funk to harmony-laden pop and bouncing piano tap-alongs. The lyrics match the musical diversity well, alternating between the concrete and abstract throughout, and yet always bordering on the personal. All of this adds up to a wonderfully diverse collection of songs that both catch the ear and move the head, and that become more interesting with each listen rather than less. $9.99

Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention - In the 1960s DVD- This film reviews the true story of The Mothers of Invention and the music they made during the first incarnation of the band. With group members Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston and Art Tripp taking up the tale and revealing - often for the first time - what the real Frank Zappa was all about; and with contributions from 'scenesters 'like LA wildman Kim Fowley, biographer Billy James, Zappa academic Ben Watson, music journalist Richie Unterberger and English writer and musician Alan Clayson - acclaimed biographer of Edgar Varese - this program is the most detailed, informative and enjoyable documentary on Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention yet to emerge. Also features rare footage of Frank and The Mothers from throughout the 1960s, archive interviews, seldom seen live performances, and a host of other features. 134 minutes $19.95

Alex Machacek, Neal Fountain, Jeff Sipe - Official Triangle Sessions CD This was a special weekend of music. Alex Machacek, Jeff Sipe and Neal Fountain performed three nights of music during the last weekend of June in North Carolina. It was the very first time that Alex and Neal met. Neal Fountain hails from the musical hotbed of Athens, GA, and has been playing professionally from the age of 14. Best known as a sideman to Col. Bruce Hampton and the Fiji Mariners (a post-A.R.U. project of Hamptons) and drumming phenom Jeff Sipe. Neals name is on the short list of greater Atlanta's finest musicians. $13.99

North Mississippi Allstars - Do It Like We Used To (2 CDs + DVD) This retrospective includes two CDs that chronologically follow highlights of the Allstars' live performances over the band's first 10 years. The DVD features a full length documentary on the history of the band. Do It Like We Used To Do will please the hardcore NMA fans as well as any lover of American roots music, Southern Rock and Blues. $16.99

Steve Earle & the Del McCoury Band - The Mountain CDSteve Earle & the Del McCoury Band - The Mountain CD Steve's album, The Mountain, was was recorded with the Del McCoury Band and is "high risk, low tech" bluegrass -- "one mic, no shit"... guests include Sam Bush, Kathy Chiavola, Cowboy Jack Clement, Iris Dement, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, David Ferguson, Emmylou Harris, Tim O'Brien, Marty Stuart, Gillian Welch, and Gene Wooten... $15.99

Larry Keel & Natural Bridge - Backwoods CDLarry Keel & Natural Bridge - Backwoods CD The long-awaited second studio project from Larry Keel and his powerhouse acoustic ensemble 'Natural Bridge' has finally been unleashed! With these revolutionary tracks Keel and his ultra progressive string band have hand-crafted 7 original compositions of the 10 tunes on BACKWOODS that defy all ordinary expectations of what Bluegrass and Americana music has ever offered-- until now. Co-produced by creative genius Keller Williams and monster mountain music master Larry Keel, BACKWOODS is a supremely energizing musical ride. $16

Sol Driven Train - Tajar Tracks 2 CdSol Driven Train - Tajar Tracks 2 CD - Sol Driven Train's second children's record, Tajar Tracks Two takes up where the first Tajar Tracks left off, presenting a bevy of new sing along tunes for parents and kids alike. "The first Tajar Tracks was voted Best Children's Album of 2005 in South Carolina,"says Joel Timmons, singer, guitarist and songwriter with the group. "After the release and obvious success of our first record for children, we wanted to get back to Gwen Valley and record again as soon as possible. But our constant tour schedule didn't leave many holes to get back to the camp and record with the kids. This year, we made it a priority to spend time at Gwen Valley again and get Tajar Tracks Two out for the new year." $12

Last Week:

Derek Trucks Band - Already Free CDDerek Trucks Band - Already Free CD - Nearly a year in the making and brimming with a newfound focus on original material, Already Free is The Derek Trucks Band's natural evolution as they move forward integrating influences that span a variety of musical genres. Known for their blues roots, the group takes this album well beyond blues to incorporate the larger sounds of rock & soul. Already Free, features a stirring cover of Bob Dylan's Down In The Flood as well as the new songs, Down Don't Bother Me and Get What You Deserve. Guest appearances on the album include vocals from Susan Tedeschi and Doyle Bramhall II. $16.97

The Station - LiveThe Station - Speed of Sound - Live at Marley's (2 CDs) - The Station balances its jams on a metallic edge, adds a dash of funky machismo and even summons its Southern-rock roots to provide a fine introduction for new listeners. Despite a running time of nearly two-and-a-half hours -- all but two of these 12 songs clock in at longer than 10 minutes -- Speed of Sound remains a far-from-laborious listen. The Station jams creatively while still focusing on the songs' melodies, structure and overall effect. Highlights include Illuminator, which boasts jaw-dropping guitar and sax solos, and the heartland anthem Midwest Moonshine. But, really, cue up just about any of these tunes, push 'play' and let your opinion of jam bands likely be altered for the better. - Michael Popke, Sea of Tranquility.org $16

Mark O Connor's Hot Swing TrioMark 0'Connor's Hot Swing Trio CD - Acoustic, progressive violin and Django-style guitar jazz played by Mark O'Connor and his Hot Swing Trio featuring Frank Vignola and Jon Burr. Writing about the live concert at which this recording was made, respected critic Terry Teachout, wrote for the Washington Post, "what I find most exciting about the Hot Swing Trio is the collective willingness of its members to knock down the artificial boundaries between seemingly different musical idioms. I can't wait to hear the CD that comes out of these concerts." $15.99

Albert Collins - Cold Tremors (2 Live Cds)Albert Collins - Cold Tremors (2 live CDs) - Collins plays his fingers raw, coaxing more diversity and tasteful licks out of his guitar than you'll hear on most of his studio recordings. The first disc features a much-recommended live album, recorded at the infamous El Mocambo in Toronto. The second features a 1969 gig Collins recorded at the Fillmore in San Francisco, when he served as an opening act for the Allman Brothers. $22.98

New Additions:

Chatham County Line CdChatham County Line - Chatham County Line CD - This reissue of self-titled breakout debut from Raleigh, NC's Chatham County Line marks the formation of one of acoustic music's strongest torch bearers. Chatham County Line is a document of the band in its original line-up and in the first stage of its significant album to album evolution, culminating in its most recent album IV. This first album finds the band in a more straightforward bluegrass mood, showcasing their stunning instrumentalism and the sharpening of their renowned harmonies. The album sees the quartet honing their craft on the traditional bluegrass instruments - mandolin, fiddle, banjo and acoustic guitar - and "one mic" live performance style that has become their trademark. $15

The Gourds - Haymaker The Gourds - Haymaker CD - Gourds Music" has its next chapter. Unclassifiable Austin sons The Gourds are back with Haymaker!, The crooked cousin to their critically acclaimed last album, Noble Creatures. On Haymaker! the band circles back, digs beneath and climbs over their gin soaked music roots with an album of grass-fed cosmic country. Rattling flourishes of soul, swamp rock and gospel rhythms spill out all over the place. Psychic songwriting apparatus Jimmy Smith, Kevin Shinyribs Russell and Max Johnston continue their chronicling of askew Texas characters who populate the subterranean Lone Star State, a world of 'Fossil Contender's', 'Luddite's', 'Valentines' and women with skin like chocolate milk, so beautiful they make married men feel no guilt. Haymaker! will undoubtedly slake the thirst of hardcore and fledgling Gourds fans alike and tip unsuspecting ears to the colorful Texas thump being laid down by this legendary band. $15

Frank Zappa - Dub Room Special CDFrank Zappa - The Dub Room Special CD - All tracks are previously unreleased on CD and with the exception of the Token Vamp which appeared for the first time in The Dub Room Special. "The basic tracks from Inca Roads & Florentine Pogen were recorded live at KCET during the production of our TV special", writes FZ on One Size Fits All (1975). This equally thoroughly rejected television program is know as A Token Of His Extreme. $17.98

Frank Zappa - Wazoo (2 Live CDs)Frank Zappa - Wazoo (2 Live CDs) - Wazoo is a live album by Frank Zappa, posthumously released. It is a 2-CD set consisting of the complete concert with "The Mothers of Invention/Hot Rats/Grand Wazoo" 20-piece big band at the Boston Music Hall on September 24, 1972. It is the last concert of a brief series of shows that marked Zappa's return to the stage after his forced temporary retirement from the touring scene due to the injuries he suffered from an assault during a concert at the Rainbow Theater in London on December 10, 1971. The material showcases Zappa's endeavors into jazz-based music, and many of the compositions were featured on the 1972 studio albums The Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka and on the 1978 studio album Studio Tan. Rehearsals leading to these albums and concerts are documented on Joe's Domage (2004), while Imaginary Diseases (2006) presents live recordings with a stripped-down version of the big band named "Petite Wazoo." $28.98

New Additions:

bridge4thThe Bridge - Blind Man's Hill CD - The steady rollin' rhythms on Blind Man's Hill cut like a knife through warm butter. One part New Orleans rhythms, one part southern country soul and yet another earthy rock 'n' roll, The Bridge write timeless songs that resonate with Americana themes of locomotives, moonshine, mason jars, ramblin', gamblin' and carnival barkers. Playing upwards of 250 shows a year, including festivals like Gathering Of The Vibes, Mountain Jam, Camp Bisco and Moe Down, The Bridge have built a fanatic audience through a growing grassroots buzz that attracts new fans with every performance. The Bridge's Blind Man's Hill is the kind of finely crafted long-player that will cross the band over to an even wider audience and further establish their reputation as modern successors to artists such as The Grateful Dead, Little Feat and The Radiators. $14.98

jhthJimmy Herring - Lifeboat CD - The first solo album from guitar phenomenon Jimmy Herring, known for his amazing guitar work with the Allman Brothers, The Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Project Z, Frogwings, Jazz is Dead and many more. Currently, he's holding down the lead guitar chair for Widespread Panic. Lifeboat features A-list musicians Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers) on bass, Jeff Sipe (Jonas Hellborg/Shawn Lane, Aquarium Rescue Unit) on drums, and Kofi Burbridge (Derek Trucks Band) on flute and keyboards. Joining the core line up as special guests are Derek Trucks on slide guitar, Greg Osby on saxophones, Ike Stubblefield on organ, Matt Slocum on the clavinet and Bobby Lee Rodgers on guitar. Lifeboat is a wide-ranging work that encompasses various musical genres, including rock, jam, jazz and blues. From foot stomping southern-flavored rockers to modern bop and fusion to a cover of the Wayne Shorter composition "Lost" and melodic pieces full of subtlety and nuance, the music of Lifeboat allows Jimmy to express a full-range of emotions through his guitar. $15.99

dso3thDark Star Orchestra - Ithaca 30 Years Later (3 CDs) - This 3-CD set captures Dark Star Orchestra recreating one of the most well known shows in The Grateful Dead's long history. The 5/8/77 Cornell show is lovingly re-imagined exactly 30 years to the day after it happened, and in the very town in which it took place, with special unique setlist embellishments by DSO. Although known for their faithful replication of The Grateful Dead sound, this is by no means a by-the-numbers copy of the original show. "We like to take the set list and use it as a frame over which we lay our own patchwork of improvisation," says DSO guitarist Rob Eaton. The Grateful Dead Songs are there, the Grateful Dead sound is there, but the rest is distinctively DSO. Taped live as it happened, this set is a must-have for fans of The Grateful Dead and Dark Star Orchestra. $24.99

dsodvd2thDark Star Orchestra - Ithaca 30 Years Later (2 DVDs) - This 2-DVD set captures Dark Star Orchestra recreating one of the most well known shows in The Grateful Dead's long history. Videotaped live as it happened by a multi-camera crew, this video is a must-see for fans of The Grateful Dead and Dark Star Orchestra. $24.99

rodgabthRodrigo y Gabriela LP - 180-gram vinyl LP version. Also includes the full album on CD. On their 2006 self-titled album, Rodrigo y Gabriela offer up a fierce set of acoustic instrumentals that garnered the Mexican guitar duo international attention. Technically accomplished, playful, and emotive, these tracks work in the flamenco and folk vernaculars while reverberating with rock energy, as revealed on the fleet-fingered "Tamacun" and the highly percussive "Diablo Rojo." However, the real showstoppers are the pair's excellent covers of Metallica's "Orion" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," which both honor the hard-rock originals, and resonate with impressive added flourishes. $19.99

xmasrockthVarious Artists - Southern Rock Christmas CD - How difficult would it be for a classic rock fan to dig the Phil Spector-inspired "Jingle Bell Rock" by 38 Special or to head-bop to George Thorogood's "Rock and Roll Christmas," or twist (yes, twist) to Foghat's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," sounding like they're invoking the very spirit of Roy Orbison? It wouldn't be difficult at all. Then get another eggnog and toast Steve Morse's uplifting instrumental version of "Joy to the World," the hip-shaking beat of "Winter Wonderland" by the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the aptly named "Christmas Blues" by Canned Heat. The album's closing track is a warm, up-tempo version of "Silent Night" by Elvin Bishop. There's enough rocking holiday fare here for those who like their rock aged and Southern fried. $11.99

wmxmasthWynton Marsalis - Crescent City Christmas Card CD - Christmas jazz albums come and go with each end-of-year holiday season. And while they may make for good soundtracks to that holiday spirit, rarely do they stand up as much more than that, and certainly not as anything approaching a serious listen. While the material here may be rendered in the familiar Christmas spirit of good cheer (check out Wynton Marsalis on the back cover with mismatched green and red socks decking out his white suit), and the songs are in the familiar Christian tradition of the holiday, the arrangements are fresh and are delivered with memorable turns on "Silent Night" by opera diva Kathleen Battle, and on "Sleigh Ride" by Jon Hendricks. The playing is spirited and the material is dealt with in a manner suggesting great care in both delivery and arrangement. $8.99

zappastage4thFrank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 4 (2 CDs) - YCDTOSA Vol. 4 was released in 1991, with recordings ranging from 1969 to 1988. First time appearance for 11 songs. Because of the huge time span, there's an enormous list of musicians, including FZ on lead guitar & vocals, Captain Beefheart (handling vocals and harmonica on "The Torture Never Stops"), the mid-70's band, the '79 band, the `82 band, the `84 band, the `88 band, and even 2 Mothers tracks from 1969 ("You Call That Music?" and "Tiny Sick Tears") -- Lowell George appears on both. Archie Shepp guests on tenor sax solo on "Let's Move To Cleveland" from 1984 (Amherst MA). There's also a smelly-beard routine involving George Duke; a "Montana" that segues two versions from 12 years apart; and a version of "Stevie's Spanking" with Steve Vai playing one of his best solos, doubtlessly inspired by the events described in the lyric. $17.99

The Phish from Vermont

New Additions:

annuals2thAnnuals - Such Fun CD & LP - Such Fun embraces a vast landscape of musical richness, combining Adam Baker's accomplished songcraft with an instrumental palate that is even more blindingly colorful than their previous work. Standing between epic post-rock, pop guitar crunch, woozy country swing and lovely orchestral ballads, Such Fun is revelatory in its depth. This perfectly crafted album, filled with harmonies, guitars, bursting crescendos, and bold strings, sees Annuals reaching to the farthest parts of their musical imaginations and coming back with something incredible. CD $12.98; LP $16.98

dbsthDeep Blue Sun - Live at Tree Sound CD - West coast psychedelia meets southern soul. Classic funk meets New Orleans boogie. Deep Blue Sun is a dynamic and original six-piece band playing funk, rock and southern fried soul. Their newest live CD captures the wide range of musical styles, featuring a powerful rhythm section, intricate harmonies, soaring guitar and driving keyboards. The music flows seamlessly between inspired improv and melodic, well crafted songs that reveal more with every listen. Discover the band Yonrico Scott (Derek Trucks Band) calls the "best kept secret in the jam band world." $12.00

quactusthQuactus - Once A Pond, A Spine CD - Taking its cue from classic bands including the Grateful Dead, Phish, and the Allman Brothers, Quactus has developed a diverse style that blends various genres of music. Harmonious vocals set atop changing textures and moods, mixed with subtle meter changes, intricate melodies, and a cohesive improvisational style backed by a solid rhythm section comprise the core of the Quactus sound. Their jams may run the gamut from psychedelic to trance-like to ultra-funky or even heavy metal excess. The members of Quactus have over 30 years of musical and audio instruction amongst them in both private and college level courses, which has given the band a strong command of music theory, songwriting, improvisation, vocal technique and music production skills. Jambands.com's "New Groove of the Month" for May 2008! $12.00

chef2thChef Dave - No Strings Attached CD - There's a whole lot of jamming going on down south, and this is one exemplary slice of it! Featuring master keyboardist and improviser Johnny Neel and fiery guitarist Seth Davis, this quartet cooks up some rocking fusion and funk mostly-instrumentals! All songs were written by the players spontaneously, as they were being recorded. There were no rehearsals and no charts - what you hear is what happened at that moment! Seth Davis, guitar; Johnny Neel, organ, piano, keys; James Cook, bass; Derek Mixon, drums. $10.00

mm2thMike Musick - Honest CD - If you like great songs you can sing in the car or in the shower with words that just might change your life, this album is for you. At times he reminds one of David Gray, or maybe Joe Jackson, quite possibly because of his laid back and understated approach. Most of the time his songs revolve around a memorable hook and simple beat, letting the pop grow and flower into full bloom without any unnecessary flourishes. This simplicity is key, and it makes this an album you'll want to hear over and over again. Music is a universal language, and Musick is a universal messenger. There's no guessing - he sings it to you straight from the heart on his title track, he opens your eyes with his world-important song "America," and tells stories we can all relate to like "Scream" and "Staring at the Sun." The album flows beautifully with soulful rhythms that crest with waves of realism, piquing your curiosity and unleashing your inner consciousness. $10.00

tgdscarabthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Scarab T-Shirt - Limited Edition Black t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Scarab logo on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL (XXL adds $2.00). $19.98

tgdglyphicsthGrateful Dead - Egypt 1978 Glyphics T-Shirt - Limited Edition Desert sand colored t-shirt with Egypt 1978 Glyphics design on front. Please choose size Small thru XXL. XXL adds $2.00. $19.98

delbestthDel McCoury - The Best of Del McCoury: The GrooveGrass Years CD - A few short years before Del McCoury reached his peak in popularity, he put together a band that would prove to be one of the most potent and powerful in Bluegrass music. After leaving the Rounder label with the want to move forward and push the boundaries of Bluegrass, Del signed on to be a part of an elite group of musicians, engineers and producers that would become known as The GrooveGrass Boyz. At that point The Del McCoury Band would record what would arguably become the best sounding, hardest hitting Bluegrass of his career. He recorded for the first time with icons Doc Watson, Mac Wiseman and Bootsy Collins. Though this album contains 9 Bluegrass tracks and only one GrooveGrass track, the Bill Monroe classic "Can't You Hear Me Calling" with Funk pioneer and icon Bootsy Collins, the impact of the stylistic convergence is noticeable in every song. $15.98

boristhBoris Garcia - Once More Into The Bliss CD - Once More Into The Bliss is the newest offering from Boris Garcia and features guest appearances from Buddy Cage (New Riders) and Donna Jean-Godchaux-MacKay (Grateful Dead). To be clear, Boris Garcia isn't a person - it's a band. Inspired by their predecessors like The Grateful Dead, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Railroad Earth, Boris Garcia has cleverly twisted the free-form spirit of the jamband scene with folk, blues, jazz, and bluegrass music to forge their own sound. $14.98

stanley2thRalph Stanley - Old Time Pickin': A Clawhammer Banjo Collection CD - Ralph Stanley established himself long ago as America's foremost singer of traditional mountain music. His instantly recognizable voice has earned him Grammys, a Grand Ole Opry membership, an honorary doctorate degree, a place in the bluegrass hall of fame, and a living. Ralph has, for the most part, set aside the banjo in his live performances for several years, but he usually picks it up for at least one rollicking, crowd-pleasing "clawhammer number." For a man who helped establish the bluegrass genre, it is fun to watch him return to the old-time mountain style of playing that he learned from his mother when he was 11. The eighteen songs on this collection represent nearly 30 years of recording for Stanley. Most of the clawhammer songs he recorded for Rebel Records are here, including nine previously unreleased tracks. $9.98

beatlesmmdvdthThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Memories DVD - Magical Mystery Tour was the first Beatles film project following the death of manager Brian Epstein in August 1967. The film was unscripted as various 'ordinary' people traveled on a charabanc bus, having 'magical' adventures en route. The movie soundtrack was released in the UK in December 1967 and in 1968 received a Grammy Award. Magical Mystery Tour Memories is an upbeat rockumentary featuring the vivid memories of those who witnessed the making of the movie and features a celebrity cast along with anecdotal stories and unseen 8mm home movie footage, as well as eyewitness accounts from fans, onlookers and the cast of the movie. "This is a happy, upbeat film" comments David Lambert, producer and director of Arthouse Pictures, who produced the movie. "Probably the last time the Fab Four were all still getting along." Keith Badman (author and Beatles expert) said "I have seen the rough cut screener and can't wait to see the finished program. It is fantastic." This film is a must have for all Beatles fans worldwide and an opportunity to look back fondly at the heady days of the swinging 60s. $19.95

zappastage3th_0Frank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3 (2 CDs) - These 25 tracks were recorded between 1971 and 1984, although most of it is from the 1984 tour. Of special interest is the first track, "Sharleena," recorded December 23, 1984. On it, 15-year old Dweezil joins his father on guitar, the first time they played together onstage. Also of special interest is a live version of "King Kong" that includes FZ's guitar solo from the notorious Rainbow Theater show of 1971. It was during this very number that an overreacting audience member, whose girlfriend claimed to be in love with Frank, chose to jump onstage and knock FZ into the orchestra pit; he wound up in the hospital and wouldn't perform for the remainder of the year. This solo is deftly edited into a 1982 performance of the same tune. On the lighter side, there's an '84 performance of "Bamboozled by Love" where the band slides into a Yes riff that you'll probably recognize. $17.99

New Additions:

mmwr1th_0Medeski Martin and Wood - Radiolarians 1 CD - In February 2008, Medeski Martin & Wood began their Radiolarian Series, a three run, three record project. In direct contrast to they way things are usually done, MMW decided to spend 2008 composing the skeleton of new music, taking it on the road to flesh out the composition, and finally putting the (by now well played) notes down as tracks. Three times. Radiolarians 1 is the first in this 3 record series. Check out an in-depth review here! $15.00

deadegyptthGrateful Dead - Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978 (2 CDs & 1 DVD) - Good things come to those who wait! It took 30 years to produce this 2CD/DVD set from the Dead's legendary September 1978 run at the Sound & Light Theater outside Cairo, nestled in the dunes just a short mummy-walk from the Great Pyramid and the mysterious Sphinx. This beautiful and historic package includes two exceptional music CDs and a DVD with over 95 minutes of concert footage from the Egypt shows (plus an impressionistic "Vacation Tapes" mini-documentary that shows the band and Dead family at play). The DVD concert material has been mixed in both stereo and surround sound, with two listening options (DTS 5.1 and PCM Stereo). The beautifully designed booklet (with cover inspired by the late, great Alton Kelley's Egypt 1978 tour poster) contains a revealing essay by longtime Ice Nine Publishing chief and Egypt trip co-organizer Alan Trist, and many rare photos. All that's missing is sand, the smell of camels and some "hubbly-bubbly"! $34.98

fleckjinglethBela Fleck and the Flecktones - Jingle All the Way CD - Bela Fleck, often considered the premiere banjo player in the world, has made a name for himself as a virtuoso instrumentalist unbounded by genre. His band The Flecktones - Victor Wooten on electric bass, Jeff Coffin on sax and flute, and Future Man on percussion - are equally talented and adventurous as Fleck himself, and together they have made a string of critically acclaimed albums that combine bluegrass, jazz, funk and world music with technical prowess, unlimited imagination and occasional zaniness. Their new holiday CD Jingle All the Way is all of that, with bells on - Christmas music as it's never been heard it before, with unique tonal textures (banjo, Tuvan throat singing, klezmer mandolin), hot solos and tight ensemble arrangements that make every measure new. Jingle All the Way is the perfect stocking stuffer for those who like their Christmas music fun and challenging at the same time. $14.99

jbb6thJohn Brown's Body - Amplify CD - An explosive album featuring twelve tracks of drum & bass-heavy dub-inflected electro grooves that make up the sound JBB is known for, with a forward-thinking, fearless approach to tempos, beats, and feel that expands the genre of roots reggae as a whole. Produced by Elliot Martin and Jason "Jocko" Randall. $13.99

willb4thWill Bernard - Blue Plate Special CD - This one grooves hard and will draw the attention of music fans from all walks of life! Will is joined by and all-star cast including Stanton Moore (Galactic), John Medeski (MMW), and Andy Hess for a smoking session called Blue Plate Special! Read an in-depth review here! $16.00

onesideth_0Oneside - First, to Last CD - Few "neo-traditionalists" have dared to stray too far from the "traditionalist" part of that equation. Fans of the genre tend to be fervently purist. Boston-based band Oneside, however, isn't afraid to risk biting the hand that feeds it. Oneside's debut album, First, To Last, is full of structures, lyrics, and licks that are unabashedly plucked from the traditional American canon. Songs like "Lisa" and "Got To Go" would sound perfectly at home on a Nickel Creek or Alison Krauss album. But right from the opening track, it is apparent that Oneside isn't afraid to make departures from traditional styles. Other songs would fit right in on a Sufjan Stevens or even a Radiohead album. Other bands may play strictly in a conventional roots style, but what sets Oneside apart is their willingness to take these traditional fundamentals and place them firmly in a modern context. $12.99

bongolianthThe Bongolian - Outer Bongolia CD - Nasser Bouzida, aka The Bongolian, is found in his element on Outer Bongolia! He embarks on a psychedelic musical trip to the outer regions of the Funk galaxy, taking in spaced-out heavy Bongo rhythms and Latin Soul along the way creating 100% original dance floor rhythms. Instruments featured include the Hammond, Bongos, Synthesizers, and Vibes. Drawing on all his past influences, Nasser produced an inspired recording blending elements of Funk, Soul and Jazz with grinding percussion and heavy Bongo rhythms. $14.99

bbm2thBig Boss Man - Winner CD - Big Boss Man's second album was produced by the band and Morgan Nicholls (The Streets/Muse). Morgan is the son of Immediate Records in-house songwriter Billy Nicholls, so the studio was choc-full of groovy stuff: The Who's Hammond, Steve Marriott's first guitar, Clavinets, Wurlitzers, etc, all of which were put to good use on the album! Morgan was also involved in the recent Big Boss Man seven-inch only remix of Paul Weller's Top 20 single "The Bottle." Winner continues the trip through 60's funk, along the way taking in bongo/fuzz sounds in "Everybody Boogaloo," Latin soul in "Complicated Lady," French beat in "Tu As Gach," floor-fillers such as "Kelvin Stardust," and general Hammond/Moog mentalness everywhere else. $14.99

jr2thJah Roots - Joy CD - Jah Roots has quickly gained a hard-earned reputation as one of America's most talented homegrown reggae bands. Lead singer Ras Josh perfectly employs his soulful, fervent vocals as an instrument for delivering thought-provoking lyrical content in which themes of love, oppression and spirituality are often explored. Joy was recorded at Lion & Fox Studios in Washington, known internationally as America's preeminent reggae recording studios. The recording of Joy proved to be Jah Roots' first exposure to creating new music in such a high caliber facility, and the benefits of this opportunity are clearly evidenced in every resulting track. Once in the studio, Jah Roots were joined by legendary reggae guitarist Junior Marvin, who served as lead guitarist for Bob Marley & The Wailers from 1977-80. He contributed lead guitar on "Spliff & My Lady" and "Ganja Weed." His skilled efforts serve not only to decorate the two tracks on which he plays, but to imbue the entire album with a timelessness and brilliance that any true Bob Marley fan will recognize. $12.99

dungen3thDungen - 4 CD - The ten tracks on 4 comprise Dungen's most concentrated effort to date, beats surging forth and atmosphere changing as their sound continues to evolve. Every song here runs under five minutes, pushing the group to introduce their confident melodies and arresting ambiance in tighter frameworks. Gauging from the results, this challenge has done them well. Included in this set are the live favorite "Mina Damer och Fasaner," excerpts from a wild psychedelic jam session entitled "Samtidigt," and a storming, Northern Soul-influenced instrumental entitled "Fredag." These stand tall with some of the most fully-realized moments of Dungen's career - percolating prog-pop groover "Det Tar Tid" and eloquent opener "Satt At Se." $12.98

trafficdvd2thTraffic - Live at Santa Monica DVD - On DVD for the first time! Get up close and personal with Traffic in this 1972 show from Santa Monica, CA. The filmmaker's focus is squarely on the band in this one, as the viewer is presented with a myriad of camera angles from which to experience Winwood and Company's stirring soul-rock! $19.99

ass7thAsylum Street Spankers - What? And Give Up Show Biz? (2 CDs) - This hilarious 2-disc live show incorporates the feel of a "revue" to present the Asylum Street Spankers' whacked-out version of traditional music. Turning the innocent sounds of early jazz, swing, acoustic, and bluegrass on their collective ear, the Spankers combine amazing instrumental talent with a Hollywood-worthy sense of humor and presentation, creating a zany yet fulfilling musical experience. $21.95

saberthSabertooth - Dr. Midnight: Live at the Green Mill CD - This is the most fun you'll ever have with bebop music! Sabertooth is by far the most talented, most inventive, most entertaining traditionally-oriented jazz act in Chicago. Saxophonists Cameron Pfiffner and Pat Mallinger are exciting jazz players who evoke the spirit of historic saxophone tandems like Johnny Griffin & Eddie Davis or Sonny Stitt & Gene Ammons. They formed Sabertooth in 1990 and have been doing the Saturday night After Hours Jazz Party from midnight to 5 AM at Chicago's historic Green Mill jazz club for fifteen years. The incomparable Pete Benson has been Sabertooth's organist for five years, contributing the low end and the fabulous organ melodies and solos, and the group is anchored by the uber-diverse Rebel Souls drummer Ted Sirota. It's not everyday you hear virtuoso players performing jazz with such humor and intensity - witness their interpretation of the Grateful Dead's "China Cat," and see jazz nazis run in fear! Cut loose to the sound of the hilariously titled "It's Surely Gonna Flop If It Ain't Got That Bop!" It's all here folks! $16.98

sirotathTed Sirota's Rebel Souls - Breeding Resistance CD - The Berklee-trained Sirota brings together jazz, afrobeat, blues, reggae, and R&B on this release! Featuring Chicago luminaries all around (including Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker), this album breathes fire with politically charged afrobeat rhythms driving the musicians to create danceable, thought-provoking songs. The album mashes the Chicago school of jazz with far-flung elements of world music, as elegant musicianship is bolstered by a heartbeat of rebellious rhythm. "This CD is dedicated to the spirit of resistance and struggle against oppression. Although often dismissed and glossed over as mere entertainment, Jazz and Blues music are rooted in the struggle against oppression and the forces of reaction. My intention is to let our music be a shot in the battle to defeat those who continually try to lure us back to the dark ages." - Ted Sirota $16.98

zappastage3thFrank Zappa - You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2 (2 CDs) - Departing from the live-compilation format of YCDTOSA Vol. 1, Volume Two is the only installment to include a complete show - Sept. 22, 1974, in Helsinki, Finland, to be exact. The Apostrophe-era band (with George Duke on keyboards, Napoleon Murphy Brock on sax, Ruth Underwood on percussion/marimba, Tom Fowler on bass and future Genesis member Chester Thompson on drums) had never played better, and this set includes long stretches of brilliant instrumental work on "Dupree's Paradise," "Inca Roads" and "Approximate." Also here is the definitive version of the "Village of the Sun" suite and a long version of "Montana" that keeps threatening to turn into "Whippin' Post." $17.99

gilmour2thDavid Gilmour - Live in Gdansk (2 CDs or 2 CD/1 DVD set) - The last concert on David's 2006 Summer Tour was held in front of 50,000 people at the shipyards in Gdansk, Poland, at the request of the Gdansk Foundation. The concert was the only occasion on which David performed the tour material with an orchestra, using the 40-strong string section of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zbigniew Preisner, who was responsible for the On An Island album's orchestral arrangements. Other unique features of the show included the performance of "A Great Day For Freedom" with the orchestral arrangement of the late Michael Kamen, and a guest appearance by prominent Polish pianist Leszek Mozdzer, who reprised his piano part from "A Pocketful Of Stones." 2 CDs $19.99; 2 CDs & DVD $29.99

Only By The Night is a bold and expansive sonic statement that looks set to solidify Kings of Leon's position as one of the most important international acts of 2008 and beyond. ocms3thOld Crow Medicine Show - Tennessee Pusher CD - The third and most personal album by "one of the greatest bands that A Prairie Home Companion has ever had the pleasure to host" (Garrison Keillor) contains 13 songs, including a dozen OCMS originals. The album is produced by Don Was (Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, etc), who describes the band as "The Clash Of Bluegrass Music" and "the smartest and finest purveyors of American music to come down the pike in decades." The album itself offers a virtual American road trip, populated with characters that span a century of the South. Down and outers, hustlers, junkies and freighthoppers are just a few of the archetypes we meet along the way as OCMS continues to create their special blend of American roots, rock, blues and country music. $17.98

fidthFiddleworms - Volkswagen Catfish CD - In the mid-1990s, The Fiddleworms emerged as an important rock band working out of Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Taking their name from night crawler catfish bait and traveling to gigs in an orange stretch limo, they developed a large following across the spectrum of the music industry. The Fiddleworms of today go far beyond the fat chops, meaty grooves and original rock that have become the central theme of their legendary live shows. Their songs feature images of southern character and charm with personal stories that transcend life's struggles. Their new release features music in a variety of styles, including reggae, country, jam band, rhythm and blues, funk, New Orleans jazz, and rock, and reflects the long and storied history of the Shoals music scene. Their ability to captivate an audience through their harmonies, lyrical style and Malone's salt-of-the-earth riffs are beyond comparison. $12.00

allentthAllen Thompson CD - Allen Thompson blends the laid-back California country of Merle Haggard with the hard-rocking Americana of The Band and the Grateful Dead with a touch of Stax r&b and Capricorn Records soul to create an album that can only be described as Allen Thompson Music. Allen says "This is honest music about love and life. I play American Music. I sing songs about the changes that occur in all of our lives. I don't sweeten up a song about love, because love isn't always sweet. I don't sadden up a song about death because death is a natural part of life. I sing real music with real lyrics about real people." World-famous keyboardist Chuck Leavell says "Allen Thompson is one of the best new artists to come out of the South in recent times. He's got soul, he's got groove and he knows how to rock. It's on my highly recommended list!" $10.99

HGMN Greening Success So Far

Inaugural Vortex Music Festival Announced

New Additions:

freek3thFreekbass - Grooveyard CD - Protege to funk-bass pioneer Bootsy Collins, fellow Cincinnati native Chris "Freekbass" Sherman and his band have inherited the Buckeye State's funk flag, while winning over many funk-favoring ears across the Midwest. Recorded live at the 20th Century Theatre in Cincinnatti, Grooveyard is just that - a wide-open space full of dance-inducing, hard-hitting and sweaty electronic funk that listeners can let their ears run wild and get lost in! $12.00

herbal5thThe Herbaliser - Same As It Never Was CD - Blending hip-hop, sampled breaks, and jazz, The Herbaliser have, with their five Ninja Tune full lengths, remained stalwarts of the creative downtempo scene for more than a decade. Same As It Never Was is a brand new effort, and the first with the group's new five piece line-up including lead vocalist Jessica Darling. It's clear that The Herbaliser's evolution is still in progress. As the title suggests, Same As It Never Was sees The Herbaliser employing more of a live band sound (indicative of their transition from a duo to a five piece), showing that they can produce scratchy funk to rival groups like the Dap Kings. With guest vocalists including Jean Grae of the Okayplayer camp and their signature knack for reflective songs that still bump, it's clear that The Herbaliser's sonic trajectory is still picking up steam. $15.99

tffthAnthony Smith's Trunk Fulla Funk - Life As We Know It CD
- Anthony Smith is best known these days for providing the Hammond backbone and deft, left-handed bass lines in the highly acclaimed Karl Denson Trio (KD3). Others will remember him as the charismatic chairman of Global Funk Council, an ensemble that gained notice through over 600 tour dates across the country. Now, Anthony Smith brings us Trunk Fulla Funk, a supergroup of jam scene veterans and show-stopping newcomers. Their debut album blends Smith's impeccable songwriting, pop mentality and expert arrangements with the virtuosity of an all-star cast including Karl Denson, Fareed Haque, Jake Najor, and many more. The result is a fresh, edgy perspective of the times. $13.99

ff5thFour Finger Five - Four Finger Five CD
- Incorporating myriad genres including jazz, soul, rock and pop, this trio from Muskegon, Michigan has concocted a truly unique style, deftly taking the classic triumvirate of guitar, bass, and drums and building a sound that is at once innovative and creative while feeling as familiar as a thrift store coat. Featuring collaborations with world-renowned saxophonist Karl Denson and pianist Anthony Smith, Four Finger Five presents a band that is young but confident, demonstrating tremendous talent with all aspects of the songwriting craft and a willingness to leave traditional conceptions of jazz/rock/soul at the door. While this self-titled release features several tracks that clearly reveal the band's jam-based roots, it displays incredible diversity, bringing an air of culture to blue-collar rock and urban pop/soul by using straight ahead jazz elements to bridge a gap between those two long-isolated genres. $13.99
