The New Mastersounds - Plug & Play CD - The sixth album from the UK Funk maestros. What you get on Plug & Play is: their trademark infectious energetic grooves, warm vintage production by guitarist Eddie Roberts, and successful forays into sub-genres like Psychedelic Afro-funk, CTI-era Jazz-Funk, Soul Jazz and classic Soul. Though the NMS wear their musical roots on their sleeve, this ain't no retro copycat band: each track sounds unmistakably like The New Mastersounds. And in Dionne Charles they have found a vocalist who can do justice to the phenomenal soulfulness of the music. $13.98
Equaleyes - While I'm Alive CD - Formed as a power trio in early 2006, Equaleyes began touring through Idaho, Utah & Colorado with a blend of rock, funk & bluegrass. When the group brought onboard a fourth voice with keyboards and accordion in late 2007 they infused a pop-electronic sound to their already diverse repertoire. Armed with their sophomore album, While I'm Alive (7/22/08 release), Equaleyes is attracting both young & old to the dance floors each time they light up the stage. With a rapidly growing fan base Equaleyes has found opportunities to play such venues as the Knitting Factory (Boise, ID) and Fox Theatre (Boulder, CO) along with opening for larger acts like The Wailers and The Jerry Garcia Band. $12
Bourgeois Gypsies - Faulty Fairytales CD - From stripped down, gritty hillbilly sounds to slinky swamp ballads, Faulty Fairytales hearkens back to country and blues records of old with definite shades of Bakersfield and soul. "If you hate the blandness in your music then this delicately seasoned and ever so slightly offbeat album will make you very happy." ~ Bluesbunny $12
Toubab Krewe - Live at the Orange Peel CD - Since forming in 2005, this exciting instrumental quintet has developed their unique sound over the course of numerous extended trips to Mali, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast, where they immersed themselves in local musical culture. But their roots are in Asheville, NC, where they recorded this, their sophomore album. These songs continue to mix American rock with West African musical traditions. Along the way, they explore the worlds of surf and zydeco fusing it into one of the most innovative voices in music today. $12.98
Fareed Haque & the Flat Earth Ensemble - Flat Planet CD - "Hindustani music swings!" says Fareed Haque, leader of the Flat Earth Ensemble (and member of Garaj Mahal). A jazz and classical guitar virtuoso, Haque's latest project is the culmination of years of study and innovation, a blending of Hindustani folk rhythms and groove jazz. "All my life I've loved the rhythms of South Asian folk music - the folk music from northwestern India and Pakistan, that is the basis for much of what is today called "Bollywood" film music, Qawwali, Bhangra. All of these are styles of South Asian music that GROOVE with hypnotic, high energy, danceable rhythms...much the same as the African-American gospel that is the basis of so much popular American music". In South Asia, as on the South Side of Chicago, 'charismatic music' - music that builds to an emotional and many would say spiritual climax - is at the core of traditional culture and the basis for much in popular culture...simply put Punjabi folk music is to India what gospel is to America - funky, fun, danceable and spiritual. $15.99

Alison Brown - The Company You Keep CD - "I've been writing, recording and performing my own tunes for nearly 20 years now," Brown reflects. "And as I thought about the progression of my sound - our band sound - I began to think about what a collaborative effort this musical journey has been. After 15 years of recording, performing and philosophizing about music with (pianist) John R Burr and (bassist) Garry West, I really wanted to draw that collaborative spirit to the forefront on this album." The Company You Keep features the musicians she has spent most of the past 15 years performing with: John R. Burr (piano), Garry West (bass), David Grisman Quintet alum Joe Craven (fiddle/mandolin/percussion) and Larry Atamanuik (drums) alongside guests John Doyle (guitar), Stuart Duncan (fiddle) and Kenny Malone (drums) on a set of engaging, upbeat and melodic tunes, many of which were co-written by Brown and Burr. $17.98
