New Additions to the Catalog:
Turbine - Reward CD - From the energetic rocker "Don't Take Money from Strangers" through the dark bluegrass of "Roll On" to the New Orleans groove of "Invited," this New York City band puts a unique imprint on Americana with a style distinctly their own. With sheer exuberance and a high-wire act reputation, they push the boundaries of music in a way that's undeniably refreshing.
Reward is Turbine's second studio release and marks their first as a full band. Jeremy Hilliard, singing lead vocals on eight of the nine tracks, adds an explosive electric guitar style steeped in the blues and roots traditions of the south. Ryan Rightmire, playing the harmonica and acoustic guitar at the same time, brings this classic combo into the 21st century as he manipulates effects that can turn his harmonica into an electric guitar, organ, and even a turntable. With the additions of Justin Kimmel on bass and Jason Nazary on drums, Turbine evolved to the next level, featuring three-part harmonies and an experimental group dynamic that has wowed audiences across the country. $10.00
Ghostland Observatory - Robotique Majestique CD - These guys will be the darlings of festival season this year, and they've timed the release of their latest disc to perfectly coincide with gaining with a hell of a lot more fans this summer. Only Texas could claim something as improbable as this duo! Sweaty, raw-boned, and direct from the future, committed to electronics, stuck on big beats, yet unmistakably powered by rock 'n' roll, Ghostland Observatory bring plenty of personality to the table to match their majestic music. They mostly prefer to let their music speak for itself, and it's not subtle. $15.98
The Ragbirds - Wanderlove CD - The Ragbirds use many traditional folk instruments including violin, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, accordion, acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. With their folky roots sounds firmly embedded in the soil of rhythms ancient and new, they incorporate African poly-rhythms and Afro-Cuban tumbaos mixed with a rock, hip-hop or reggae style drum-kit. Melodic lines are often built of ethnic scales and techniques, sometimes Celtic in style, sometimes Gypsy, or Latin, or African, and there is an improvisational element to the songs that keeps them fresh. In live performances, the band frequently incorporates traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a nearby hand drum. They have a strong belief in the beauty of poetry and positive music, and the power of danceable rhythm. Wanderlove is their second album, and it's blowing music fans away with infectious world grooves! $12.00
Also Available from The Ragbirds - Yes, Nearby CD $12.00
Comets on Fire - Avatar CD/LP - The follow-up to Blue Cathedral is an earthy, more accessible, and downright beautiful album. Avatar veers from swinging, bluesy explorations to piano-laced, progressive power balladry to pure tribalism, evoking everyone from the Allmans to Quicksilver to Procol Harem to some insane Fela/Sun Ra/Crazy Horse hybrid, yet remains wholly Comets On Fire. Though they play cleaner and clearer, their firepower is evident and abundant. Unrelentingly psychedelic!
CD $14.00. LP Vinyl $12.89
