New Releases

Max Allen Band CDMax Allen Band - Everyone Thinks You're Weird CD - Max Allen Band (MAB) is the brainchild and workhorse of singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Max Allen. For over a decade, Allen and MAB have kept audiences all over the country coming back for more of the wide variety of genres, incredible musicianship, thoughtful lyrics and contagious melodies that each show brings.

Everyone Thinks You’re Weird features many new territories for the band. Everything from pop to progressive rock to dubstep to calypso and more can be heard all while bringing out Max Allen’s signature vocal and guitar sound.

Introducing Ozric TentaclesTea Leaf Green - In the Wake CD - San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green have finally harnessed their considerable live mojo into a gorgeously sculpted studio counterpart that reflects the quintet's bounteous creativity, instrumental dexterity, and dedicated songwriting chops. This is an album in the classic sense, a wide spectrum journey one takes knowing steady hands will stir one through the shifting currents. Co-produced by Jeremy Black (Apollo Sunshine) at Oakland's increasingly hot Coyote Hearing Studio, In The Wake wriggles and glows with life, a chronicle of survivors thriving through myriad challenges, the bubbling product of a rugged, dented determination to seek beauty and truth in a song.

The new album features a diverse collection of 13 all new tracks with guest appearances by Dan Lebowitz (ALO), Leslie Helpert, the Jazz Mafia Horns and many more. After more than a year in the making, In The Wake is unlike anything the band has ever recorded before.

Slightly Stoopid Slightly Stoopid & Friends - Live at Roberto's TRI Studios CD/DVD - It was an honor being invited by the Grateful Dead and Furthur's Bob Weir into his state of the art TRI Studios. Slightly Stoopid had the privilege to bring down some of their close friends, family, and musical guests to "Roberto's" TRI clubhouse for an unprecedented live webcast and in-studio performance. Good friend Tommy Chong hosted the event and provided some "Wisdom." An extended family of musical guests joining in and playing on the session features Karl Denson, Ivan and Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Don Carlos, and Bob Weir himself! The result is a 31 song / 2 set acoustic and electric performance including behind the scenes rehearsal footage, and a rare interview segment moderated by Tommy Chong & Bob Weir. Last but not least, a portion of all proceeds will benefit 2 charitable organizations whom the band supports: Save the Children and World Food Programme

New Releases

Dark Water RisingDark Water Rising - Grace & Grit CD -Led by Charly Lowry (lead singer/rhythm guitar - Semi Finalist on American Idol 2004), Aaron Locklear (keys/guitar/bass), Corey Locklear (lead guitar/cello/bass), and Shay Jones (drums), the band works to harness the sounds of Soul, Rock, Country, and R&B. Lyrically, Dark Water Rising explores all themes of life, whether it is love, heartbreak, sacrifice, celebration, despair, or pain; all the while expressing their sentiment on issues affecting Native American communities.

Dark Water Rising has performed throughout the Southeastern US, has garnered considerable radio airplay, appeared on NPR's "The Story with Dick Gordon" and "The State of Things", and has earned a Native American Music Award for "Debut Duo or Group of the Year" (2010).

"A fan of strong, heartfelt lyrics will find much to chew on" - J. Evan Wade – Home Grown Music Network

"Native Americans who piece together Southern rock full of gospel harmonies, hip-hop inflections and Motown soul with a journeyman work ethic. With bold songwriting and bewitching arrangements, DWR breaks rules effortlessly" - Sylvia Pfeiffenberger - Indy Week

Coming Soon

Les RacquetLes Racquet - Whale Hail CD - Les Racquet is an indie rock power trio with three-part vocal harmonies and virtuosic musicianship. This album was recorded as a retrospective representation of the first year as a touring band, from the gypsy life style and living out of a suitcase, to the serene moments that remind us of our humanistic spirituality, and for all the celebrations and hardships. For that, we stand up and proclaim, "Whale Hail!"

Hackensaw Boys - For the Love of a FriendHackensaw Boys - For the Love of a Friend CD - Kinderdijk, Netherlands - On February 15th, 2012, Rene Verkerk was killed while working on the scoop-wheel of his number six windmill. In the weeks following his death, friends and family gathered round and found the Hackensaw Boys were a mutual passion and comfort. Rene was a huge fan of theirs and permeated most of his relationships with their music. In March 2012, Rene's friends contacted the band and asked if they would play in celebration of their fallen brother. The Hackensaw Boys proudly accepted.

On May 24th, 2012, over 200 friends gathered in Cafe De Klok, the local pub, for Rene's celebration. From this memorial show, comes Hackensaw Boys - For the Love of a Friend, a 16 track CD including Keep It Simple and Can't Catch Me, along with a 35 minute bonus DVD documenting the story, as well as the show.

Whitewater Ramble - Roots & GrooveWhitewater Ramble - Roots & Groove CD - The band has welcomed back Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth as producer for the second time. Carbone worked with the band on their genre-bending debut release All Night Drive in 2010.

The band will celebrate the release with an intimate listening party at Avogadro's Number in Ft. Collins on 3/26/13 sponsored by KRFC 88.9 FM. The album will play in it's entirety and the band will perform several stripped down tunes including the new single "Mr. Banker Man." In March and April, the band will strike out on a Roots & Groove tour across Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, California and Wyoming including a special Colorado release show at Wildflower Pavilion on 3/29/13. Full tour dates will be announced soon.

"This release marks significant growth as a band from our debut album to our sophomore release," says Patrick Sites (mandolin, vocals). "Everything from songwriting, to vocal and harmonies to instrumentation have taken major leaps ahead. All Night Drive was a lot of jams, hype, fast tempos, but lacking on the song side of things. We've now settled into a blend of what we call "Roots & Groove." Our roots in bluegrass and Americana are still very strong and we really have some meaningful songs with messages and things we believe and feel, but the grooves are also a key element of these songs and necessary to keep feet moving and the dance party aspect, it's a great blend. 2013 will be the biggest and best year this band has seen, with a management team behind us and new and mature record to put in people's hands, the band is poised and ready to make the leap into the national festival scene."

Last Week:

Grateful Dead - Dead Ahead DVDGrateful Dead - Dead Ahead DVD - The eight-night Radio City stand marked the only time the Dead would play at the magnificent Art Deco landmark, one of the most famous theaters in the world. For these special shows, which came on the heels of engagements at the Warfield in San Francisco and the Saenger Theater in New Orleans, the band opened each show with an acoustic set. For the first time in more than a decade, fans were treated to this rarest of treats. Dead Ahead presents highlights of those sets (including "Bird Song," "On The Road Again" and "Ripple"), as well as some of the peak moments from the Dead's full-on electric performances (among them "Lost Sailor/Saint of Circumstance," "Franklin's Tower," "Good Lovin'" and much more). There are also bonus features not included on the original video release, including an acoustic instrumental rendition of "Heaven Help The Fool," and electric versions of "Shakedown Street," "Samson and Delilah," "He's Gone" and "Truckin'".

The "Saturday Night Live" writing/performing team of Al Franken (years before his reinvention as a progressive political gadfly) and Tom Davis, staunch Dead Heads both, are on hand to provide comic relief as the Dead's very unpopular "opening act" and as most unwelcome dressing-room troublemakers. They even manage to get Henry Kissinger into the act as an extremely unlikely bootlegger.

Grateful Dead - Ticket to New Years DVdGrateful Dead - Ticket to New Years DVD - Recorded at the historic 1987 Oakland Coliseum concert, TICKET TO NEW YEARS brings over two and a half hours of classic Grateful Dead. This LIVE performance captures the thrill and excitment of the world's number one touring band.

BERTHA, COLD RAIN AND SNOW, WHEN PUSH COMES TO SHOVE, THE MUSIC NEVER STOPPED, HELL IN A BUCKET, UNCLE JOHN'S BAND, LADY WITH A FAN, TERRAPIN STATION, DRUMS, THE OTHER ONE, THROWING STONES & MANY OTHERS

Grateful Dead - Closing of Winterland DVDGrateful Dead - The Closing Of Winterland 2 DVD set- This incredible presentation documents the last hurrah of one of the all-time classic concert venues in the US - Winterland in San Francisco, CA. Included is a spectacular three set show from the Grateful Dead in fine form, plus a documentary on Winterland, performances by The Blues Brothers and New Riders Of The Purple Sage, interviews with Bob Weir, Micket hart, Bill Graham, and more, alternate angle viewing options, and various audio mixes. The best Dead DVD yet!

New Releases:

John McLaughlinJohn McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension - Now Here This CD - McLaughlin's latest creative venture with The 4th Dimension, reflects a slight, yet significant, alteration of the dynamic, specifically the recruitment of powerhouse Indian drummer Ranjit Barot. Cameroon-born/Paris-resident bassist Etienne M'Bappe is back from To the One, as is keyboardist/drummer Gary Husband. This 8-track set of McLaughlin originals testifies to the guitarist's decades-long fascination with Indian music, through his effortless virtuosity, and relentless lyricism, even when the guitarist is shredding at near-light speed.

As John himself simply states, "Now Here This is the culmination of my life's work till now."

Govt MuleGov't Mule - The Georiga Bootleg Box (6 CDs) - "Those of you that have followed the Mule's history know that our connection with the state of Georgia is a deep one. Our first rehearsals were at the one-time living quarters of the Allman Brothers Band known as The Big House (now the ABB museum) in Macon, GA. Some later rehearsals took place at what used to be the legendary Capricorn Recording Studio in Macon while recording the song GONNA SEND YOU BACK TO GEORGIA for the HOUND DOG TAYLOR Tribute CD. A lot of our earliest shows were in Georgia as well so a lot of our growth as a band took place in front of Georgia audiences. Having recently been reminded of these 3 shows from '96, and of the fact that they had been recorded and mixed by Doug Oade back in the day, I found myself listening to these recordings for the first time in fifteen years. I was instantly taken with the visceral nature of the music along with the rawness of the way that it was captured. The Mule was barely two years old at this time and what we hear here, along with many songs from our first CD, are the works in progress of many songs that would later wind up on DOSE and in some cases LIFE BEFORE INSANITY. This was at a time in our career when our repertoire was small but constantly growing, not unlike our fan base."

Trey AnastasioTrey Anastasio - Traveler CD - Traveler, Trey's newest studio album, was co-produced with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jonsi) at Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. Musicians include Trey Anastasio Band, Mates of State s Kori Gardner, The National s Bryan Devendorf and Matt Berninger, Bon Iver's Rob Moose, and Icelandic percussionist Samuli Kosminen.

Infamous StringdustersInfamous Stringdusters - Silver Sky/We'll Do it Live (2 CDs) - Silver Sky - the recent studio recording in The Infamous Stringdusters' constant, relentless, revelatory musical evolution -- is released in Fall 2012 in a very special Silver Sky-Deluxe Edition. Delivered by SCI Fidelity and the band's own High Country label, Silver Sky-Deluxe Edition includes a previously unreleased bonus track, "He's Gone," and the bonus live album, We'll Do It Live.

Working with an unlikely studio partner - hip-hop producer Billy Hume (Ludacris, Nas) - Silver Sky finds The Infamous Stringdusters' powerful rhythms and vocal melodies at the forefront of the music. Paired with We'll Do It Live - a seamless live recording culled from four epic 2011 performances - Silver Sky-Deluxe Edition eloquently demonstrates a band whose artistic voice has fully emerged, and offers a riveting glimpse of just how, and where, The Infamous Stringdusters are leading the bluegrass revolution.

Widespread PanicWidespread Panic - Wood CD - In January and February 2012, Widespread Panic embarked their final performances of 2012 with the 11-date, four-city "Wood Tour". The acoustic tour ran through the Washington, DC area, Atlanta, GA, Denver, CO and ended with three special nights at the Belly-Up Tavern in Aspen, CO. Since then Panic has been on a long-overdue hiatus for the rest of 2012.

Widespread Panic fans are sure to be pleased with the announcement of WOOD. The set features acoustic versions, and some new arrangements of Panic originals, including "Tall Boy", "Ain't Life Grand" and "Climb To Safety". Covers of fan favorites, such as Jimmy Cliff's "Many Rivers To Cross" and Sonny Boy Williamson's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" are stand out highlights. Wood also features first time renditions of John Lennon's "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and former Animal Alan Price's "Sell Sell" from the legendary British film O' Lucky Man.

Hackensaw BoysHackensaw Boys - The Old Sound of Music Vol 2 CD - The group's latest efforts, The Old Sound of Music, Vol. 1 and The Old Sound of Music, Vol. 2, deliver original material that draws upon the songwriting talents of its members. These six-song collections are the result of recording sessions held at the decaying but comfortable Sound of Music studios on Broad Street in Richmond, VA before it moved to its new location. The recordings were mastered by Grammy award winner Charlie Pilzer at Airshow Mastering in Takoma Park, MD.

Coming Soon:

The Lee BoysThe Lee Boys - Testify CD - This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). "Sacred steel" is a type of music rooted in Gospel, but infused with rhythm and blues, jazz, rock, funk, hip-hop, country and African music driven by the pedal steel guitar. Testify features 11 tracks of new songs along with fan favorites from their live show. Stellar production, expanded instrumentation, and a slew of special guests result in a captivating mix of gospel, rock and R&B that will surely appeal to the most discerning music fan. Guest players include: Warren Haynes on vocals and lead guitar; Jimmy Herring on lead guitar; female vocalist Gia Wyre; Matt Slocum on organ, piano, and keyboards; Nate Worth on percussion; and producer/engineer/mixer Matt Grondin on electric and acoustic guitar, keyboards, backing vocals. Horns were arranged by Mark Mullins.

Cast of ClownsCast of Clowns - Have a Heart CD - Cast of Clowns, recognized nationally as a "supergroup" of performers, is part fun machine, part harbinger, and all in. Their original songs stand strong and unflinching while their creative live approach shoves the envelope into a bucket of confetti. Founded by singer, songwriter, guitarist and fiction writer, Craig Wright, in 2008, The Clowns have played from British Columbia to Hawaii, developing particularly strong followings in Oregon and the Bay Area. Featuring world-class players like Greg Anton, (Zero), Jeff Pevar, (Ray Charles, CS&N), Melvin Seals, (Jerry Garcia Band), Hutch Hutchinson, (Bonnie Raitt), Bill Kreutzmann, (Grateful Dead), Robin Sylvester, (Ratdog), Barry Sless, (Dave Nelson), Damien Erskine, (Peter Erskine, Gino Vanelli) the Clowns shows are always surprising and fun.

The Rock CollectionThe Rock Collection - Live at the Oregon Country Fair CD -The Rock Collection is a brand new all-star group that features Mark Karan, electric guitar (RatDog), Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz, acoustic guitar and pedal steel (ALO), Greg Anton on drums (Zero), and Paul Lamb on bass (Burnt Noodle). They headlined the fair on the main stage in 2011 and this high fidelity live recording captured the magic. These accomplished live performers have an outstanding musical chemistry on stage, interweaving vocal harmonies, double guitar work and extended improvisation; their original songs include new Robert Hunter lyrics. The band takes an audience on a musical journey from emotive blues to delicate ballads to blow-the-roof-off rock and roll.

Gary Clark JrGary Clark Jr. - Blak & Blu CD -Rarely does an artist explode onto the music scene with the force and impact of a comet. But when it does happen -- as it did when 27-year-old singer-guitarist Gary Clark Jr. delivered an incendiary debut performance of his song "Bright Lights" at Eric Clapton's 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival last June -- the result is magical.

Funky, hip, and badass, Gary Clark Jr. is a rocking soul man for a new generation. Weaned on John Lee Hooker, Lightnin Hopkins, and T-Bone Walker, Clark fuses his deep blues influence with a love of classic hip-hop and contemporary soul. His voice weaves between a melodic lilt and a seasoned blues howl with his guitar licks dancing and dodging between and behind the beat as if the essence of Snoop and Dre loom in his head by way of the Mississippi Delta.

Medeski Martin & Wood - Free Magic CDMedeski Martin & Wood - Free Magic CD - For its latest effort, MMW dip into their archives to present a collection of recordings documenting their first-ever acoustic tour in 2007. The set, stretching out over five expansive tracks, captures the three intrepid improvisers--keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin--exploring the telepathic hookup and deep groove sensibility that has defined MMW since its inception in 1991.

"There's a rhythmic and sonic connection that we have," says Martin of his MMW colleagues. "Listening is the most important thing for us. We're having a conversation when we're playing. The dynamic range is much greater in the acoustic setting. When we play electric, everything is turned up to 11 and it's screaming. But with John on piano and Chris on upright, we can play with a much more nuanced touch. It's a very different world, but I love it."

Last Week:

Grateful DeadGrateful Dead - Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It (2CD) - features 20 live performances hand-picked from five shows by David Lemieux, the band's archivist and the collection's producer.

Similar to 2011's Europe '72, Vol. 2, the two-disc set is a showcase for the best of the 1990 tour. The original artwork, which was created by New York artist Wes Lang (a lifelong Dead Head), showcases his elaborate drawings throughout the liner notes as well as on the cover, which features an ornate Indian skull headdress. Lemieux penned the compilation's liner notes, which provide background about the selected performances.

For those familiar with the Grateful Dead's glorious live performance history, the spring 1990 tour represents an important zenith, one fully equal to the golden ages of Europe '72 and spring '77. During this truly epic three-week spring fling, the band played as good as it ever had, with energy, sophistication and joy.

Recorded during the Grateful Dead's 25-year anniversary, the band - Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Brent Mydland, and Bob Weir - played as though it was on a mission to prove something. The pieces just fell into place that spring - impassioned vocals, the Brent/Jerry mind-meld, the MIDI expansion of the band's sonic vocabulary, and a bunch of new tunes and choice revivals.

Despite the space limitations inherent in a two-disc set, SPRING '90: SO GLAD YOU MADE IT vividly reflects the diversity of songs played during this tour. It spotlights newer material ("West L.A. Fadeaway" and "Blow Away"), classics ("Beat It On Down The Line" and "Morning Dew"), rarities ("Easy To Love You" and "Attics Of My Life"), epic jams ("Scarlet Begonias" > "Estimated Prophet"), and choice covers with Sam Cooke's "Let The Good Times Roll" and the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time."

The powerful and revealing sound heard throughout the collection is the result of work done by the band's longtime audio engineer John Cutler, who originally recorded the shows, and Jeffrey Norman, who mastered each show to HDCD specs.

Old Crow Medicine ShowOld Crow Medicne Show - Carry Me Back CD - Carry Me Back is the band's fourth studio album and features 12 brand new tracks that sonically span the band's career while still pushing them forward in new directions as musicians and songwriters. The album was recorded at the legendary Sound Emporium studios in Nashville (O Brother, Where Art Thou?; REM's Document; Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's Raising Sand).

Carry Me Back was produced by Ted Hutt (Gaslight Anthem, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly). Hutt pushed the band in a whole new way that they hadn't been pushed before. "Ted Hutt asked us to really dig deep as artists, as songwriters, to get to the heart of the matter of these songs and, especially, not to settle for anything less than their greatness," recalls Ketch Secor of the band. Secor is also very proud of the result of the band's songwriting efforts on the album, saying "For me, Carry Me Back is all about the songs, how they line up, intertwine, switch partners, and promenade home. Each of these songs was an accident waiting to happen."

Keller Williams - Pick CDKeller Williams with the Travelin' McCourys - Pick CD - For the brand new recording Pick, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Keller Williams teams up with Nashville's beloved bluegrass family The Travelin' McCourys. As revered and successful as each act is in their own right, Pick is a classic case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. Recorded at Music City's famed Butcher Shoppe studios, the album's 12 songs - a mix of originals and covers - put a unique twist on Americana music's long storytelling tradition, and the impeccable musicianship displayed on Pick captures all the heart and heartache of the bluegrass genre. But the songs don't stop there. Williams' unconventional songwriting takes on unsuspecting weight when backed by The Travelin' McCourys' emotive tones. Inspired by Keller's fearless creativity, the McCourys' flawless playing gets depth. Keller Williams with The Travelin' McCourys: It's a perfect, albeit unexpected fit.

Suwannee Springfest!

New Releases:

Soulive - Bowlive DVDSoulive - Bowlive DVD - In March of 2010, the members of Soulive hauled their instruments through the doors of a newly-opened warehouse-turned-music venue in Brooklyn that they would call home for the next two weeks. Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans called on a multitude of their closest friends and musical conspirators to join them over the next fortnight - creating an incredibly broad guest lineup that included some of the pre-eminent guitar virtuosos of our generation (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes), some of the biggest names in hip-hop (Questlove, Rahzel), and some of the most inventive improvisational players in modern rock n' roll (Robert Randolph, Marco Benevento, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge). The Brooklyn Bowl quickly became the mecca for these very distinct yet like-minded musicians, where they returned night after night, donning the dress code for good times (bowling shoes) and sharing famous Blue Ribbon fried chicken. The common thread that tied together all these disparate ingredients quickly became palpable -- from the transcendental heartfelt improvisations onstage to the homey & playful atmosphere provided by the bowling alley, the Soulive residency was like nothing that had come before it because all of those diverse elements fused to ultimately bring the Soul to Brooklyn Bowl.

Assembly of Dust - Found Sound (live) CDAssembly of Dust - Found Sound (live) CD - Assembly of Dust's 2011 release Found Sound represents a "behind the curtain" look at a band that has gained notoriety as a studio/live performance hybrid. AOD's crew secretly recorded the band in order to capture totally inspired, unfiltered versions of their best material. While the album maintains the well crafted songs and lyrical depth that Genauer and Co. are known for, it separates itself from past efforts with an energetic delivery that showcases true musicianship. The energy captured on Found Sound represents what fans from coast to coast have known for years; music's best kept secret may have just been found.

The Brew - Electric Opera DVDThe Brew - Electric Opera DVD - The Brew release their first full length DVD "Electric Opera"! In April of 2010, High-Definition cameras captured their sold out show at the historic Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. With over 60 minutes of concert footage, plus band/fan interviews and bonus features, this new concert film is pure musical entertainment from minute one to minute done. Relix Magazine says "Electric Opera brings the concert experience of this young but well fermented band home and offers a grand introduction for those not yet familiar to this frothy, progressive rock quartet."

Dead Kenny G's - Operation Long Leash CDThe Dead Kenny G's - Operation Long Leash CD - If the moniker for the combustible punk jazz trio The Dead Kenny Gs doesn't say it all upon initial glance, a first listen to their new album Operation Long Leash quickly makes their intentions clear. Saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon are committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk and yet another finds the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; all the while sounding purely DKGs. To further that extent, it's not just music informing the trio's voice, but a keen understanding of political conspiracy in American history. The album's title, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA operation in the late '40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for Western culture to undermine the rigid, confined and conformist ideals of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War.
