New Releases

Hymn For HerHymn For Her - Lucy and Waynes Smokin' Flames CD -Lucy Tight and Wayne Waxing of Hymn for Her have been busy touring across the country and abroad over the past few years, injecting juiced-up backwoods country blues with a dose of desert rock psychedelia that has been described as “Hell’s Angels meets the Amish.”

They recorded their last album, Hymn for Her Presents . . . Lucy and Wayne and the Amairican Stream, in their vintage 1961 Bambi Airstream trailer at locations stretching from Philadelphia to Malibu on a three-month tour.

For their new release, Hymn for Her Presents . . . Lucy and Wayne’s Smokin Flames, the twosome wanted to kick it into high gear. They traveled to Detroit to work with Jim Diamond, who mixed The Amairican Stream.

Arriving at Diamond’s studio with road-tested tunes, Hymn for Her recorded live and mixed 12 original songs in just one week. “People wanted what they heard live at shows and we captured that moment and corked it,” explained Lucy.

Railroad EarthRailroad Earth - Last of the Outlaws CD -Railroad Earth’s seventh album is their most evocative and ambitious set to date. At once melancholic and joyous, often deep, yet always accessible, the album captures the band as they are now; twelve years in, wiser and worn and pondering how this life affects those around them. Every song has a story and every story has its meaning. Last Of The Outlaws is an album filled with stories of birth, death, heartache, joy, sadness, redemption, loss of our heroes, and even a lesson or two from old ghosts straight from the hangman’s noose.

Sharon Jones & the Dap KingsSharon Jones & the Dap Kings - Give the People What They Want CD or LP -Give The People What They Want is certainly an appropriate title for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' upcoming release. After more than a decade of nearly constant touring, recording, and as one of the most formidable and consequential live acts performing today, they know what their audience wants from them. They know, because its what they want, too. This, shall we say, je ne sais quoi - that makes everyone from Prince to Beck to John Legend to Michael Buble to countless fans return again and again to the Dap sound - is found both on stage and in the recording booth. After two years of touring behind 2010's lauded I Learned The Hard Way, the band reconvened in Bushwick's Daptone House of Soul Studios and Daptone West in Riverside, CA to begin work on their fifth album.

The ten tracks they've delivered are what you've come to expect, even need, from the 11-piece band: the classic songwriting of We Get Along, the impressive energy of Retreat, and, solidified in Stranger To My Happiness; that kind of studio expertise that defines the band and their sound. It's those sharp, danceable funk grooves that stick to your bones; the fervent, impassioned singing that goes straight to your heart; and those sweet soul hooks that stay in your head for days on end. Give the people what they want, indeed.

HGMN Staff's Favorites of 2013:

Favorite shows: BIG Something - StrangeCreek Music Festival – Greenfield, MA  I saw this band more than any other in 2013 and this performance was one of the many highlights. It was also the farthest I travelled for music in 2013. So the anticipation was probably a big factor as well. We survived a very cold and wet festival - rained most of the time and temps remained in the 30s & 40s most of the weekend. BIG Something was the final set of the weekend, in a tiny late night cabin that was overflowing with people. I eventually worked my way to the very front where I found a couple of my travel mates and we raged! It was also great knowing that many there were getting their mind blown by this band for the very first time. They started around 2:30am and played till sunrise. Hear it here: https://archive.org/details/bigsomething2013-05-26.akg463.flac16

Everyone Orchestra @ Southland Ballroom 3/7/2013.  Matt Butler conducted an all star cast through some great improvisation. Players included: Kyle Hollingsworth (String Cheese Incident), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green), Lebo (ALO), John Morgan Kimock (Steve Kimock Band), Keith Allen (The Mantras), Hank Smith (Barefoot Manner), Casey Cranford (BIG Something), Charly Lowry (Dark Water Rising). While both nights were awesome - this one stood out in my mind as my favorite. Hear it here: https://archive.org/details/eo2013-03-07.bryonsos

Albums: BIG Something - BIG Something
Tedeschi Trucks Band - Made Up Mind
The Hip Abduction - The Hip Abduction
Les Racquet - Whale Hail
Max Allen Band - Everyone Thinks You're Weird

Favorite shows: Les Racquet - 08/24/13 - The Pour House Music Hall - Raleigh, NC
After watching these guys develop over the past year it was great to see them at the top of their game in one of my favorite venues.

Turkuaz - 5/25/13 - StrangeCreek Music Festival - Greenfield, MA - I had heard good things going into the show so I had pretty high expectations. They delivered, blowing me away with their high energy power funk.  Go see these guys play live!

Albums: Blood Orange – Cupid Deluxe
[Blood Orange is British singer-songwriter-producer Devonte "Dev" Hynes. The album kind of reminds me of some of Prince’s R&B stuff. It’s basically smooth R&B vocals with groovy synth pop instrumentation.]

Cut Copy – Free Your Mind
[Cut Copy is an Australian band that formed back in 2001. Long time fans will be very happy with this fifth release. The “dance” grooves are bouncy and fun. It’s my favorite Cut Copy album so far.)

Postiljonen– Skyer
[Postiljonen is a trio from Stockholm, Sweden. This is just an amazing album with gorgeous, ethereal female lead vocals and catchy dream pop beats. Fans of M83 and Beach House should really dig this. It’s definitely something I can listen to over and over again. Lyrics are in English]

White Denim– Corsica Lemonade
[White Denim is a four-piece band from Austin, Texas. Their music draws influence from psychedelic rock, blues, punk rock, progressive rock, soul, jazz, and experimental rock. Their music is composed of tight structures and intense jamming. Corsicana Lemonade is their fourth studio release.]

Signal Path– Habitats
[Signal Path is a band based out of Denver, Colorado that formed back in 2001. Habitats is a strong album from start to finish. It sort of reminds me of a cross between Lotus and STS9.]

Favorite shows: The Motet - Southland Ballroom -Raleigh, NC -April 28th 2013 WOW!! Love some Motet, not alot of people but they played an incredible show to a very enthusiastic crowd.  All such nice guys as well, enjoyed hanging out with them for a bit.  Hope they come back to the area soon!

Everyone Orchestra - Southland Ballroom March 7th & 8th 2013: AMAZING lineup with some of my favorite west coast musicians along with some of my NC favorites. Matt Butler, Kyle Hollingsworth (String Cheese Incident), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green), Dan Lebowitz (ALO), John Morgan Kimock (Steve Kimock Band), Casey Cranford (BIG Something), Keith Allen (The Mantras), Hank Smith (The Morning After), & Charly Lowry (Dark Water Rising). The chemistry between these musicians was incredible, felt so blessed to witness to such talent on one stage. Hear 3/8/13.

New Additions:

Michael Franti & Spearhead - The Sound of Sunshine CDMichael Franti & Spearhead - The Sound of Sunshine CD -The Sound Of Sunshine - the inspired and inspiring new album by Michael Franti And Spearhead - is a kind of musical sun shower, a bright, beautiful and often buoyant song cycle created to bring all kinds of listeners a sense of hope during rough and rainy times for so many in our world. In the mid-Nineties, Franti first formed Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he's found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Michael Franti & Spearhead - The Sound of Sunshine official music video

Trey Anastasio Band - TAB at the TAB CDTrey Anastasio Band - TAB at the TAB CD - The septet that comprises the latest fiery incarnation of Trey Anastasio Band mixes the new and the old in both band members and repertoire. Original TAB members Russ Lawton (drums), Tony Markellis (bass) and Ray Paczkowski (keys) are joined by horn section Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet and vocals), Russell Remington (tenor saxophone and flute), and newcomer Natalie Cressman (trombone and vocals). Recorded live at the legendary Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA, this set runs through such classics as a ripping 'Sand' and a sweetly sung 'Drifting' and pairs them with new TAB compositions including 'Show of Life' (co-written with Steve 'Dude of Life' Pollack) and a horn laden arrangement of Phish's 'Alaska'. TAB at the Tab ends on a high note with Jennifer Hartwick's killer trumpet chops on a raucous cover of Zeppelin's 'Black Dog.'

Grateful Dead - The Warner Bros. Studio Albums (5lp vinyl boxset)

Grateful Dead - The Warner Bros. Studio Albums (5lp vinyl boxset) - Deluxe Box Set Features Five Warner Bros. Records Studio Albums. On 180-Gram Vinyl With Lacquers Cut From The Original Analog Masters. Between 1967 and 1970, the Grateful Dead recorded five studio albums for Warner Bros. Records that formed the psychedelic canon on which the band's live legend was built. The albums spotlighted the early core lineup of Jerry Garcia, Ron 'Pigpen' McKernan, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart.

Grateful Dead and Rhino will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of 'Workingman's Dead' and 'American Beauty' with 'THE WARNER BROS. STUDIO ALBUMS,' a five-LP boxed set. The collection contains 'The Grateful Dead' (1967), 'Workingman's Dead,' and 'American Beauty' (1970), plus the original mixes for 'Anthem Of The Sun' (1968) and 'Aoxomoxoa' (1969), available on vinyl for the first time in nearly 40 years.

The set offers detailed replicas of the original albums housed in a hard-shell case that protects and stores the music with the accompanying 12in x 12in book including unpublished photos and new liner notes by Blair Jackson. To ensure the highest degree of quality, the albums were pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI using lacquers cut from the original analog masters by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering.

The original mixes for 'Anthem of the Sun' and 'Aoxomoxoa' featured here for the first time since they were released went out of circulation in 1972 and 1971 respectively. Garcia and Lesh revisited 'Aoxomoxoa' two years after its release in an effort to cut through the dense mix, which was a result of the band's extensive experimenting in the studio with one of the first 16-track recorders. The overhaul changed the album's sound significantly, including the end of 'Doin' That Rag,' which originally closed with an a cappella vocal coda that was later removed.

Zac Brown Band - You Get What You Give CDZac Brown Band - You Get What You Give CD or Deluxe CD - Deluxe edition contains 2 bonus tracks and special embossed packaging. 'You Get What You Give' features a genre-defying collection of songs that the band has been testing on the road over the past year.
Praised for the ability to blend 'down-home country with bits of reggae, bluegrass and rock to create a high-quality musical stew' (USA Today), front man Zac Brown notes that the new album 'is representative of where we are right now. It combines elements of our southern rock and country roots, but also stays true to our jam-band style musicianship from the live show.'

The Giving Tree Band - The Joke, The Threat, The Obvious CD The Giving Tree Band - The Joke, The Threat, The Obvious CD - If you ask Todd and Eric Fink of The Giving Tree Band how much time they spend making music, your voice will not be heard above the din of their banjo and guitar, respectively. For the Brothers Fink, there is no distinction between playing music and just plain living. No two days are ever the same, as every new moment is their most creative. Their bodies and instruments become a singularity that is just trying to get in tune, stay in tune, and add a little harmony to the grand symphony of life.

Johnny Winter - Beginnings 1960-67 (2 CDJohnny Winter - Beginnings 1960-67 (2 CD) - These are the earliest recordings of blues guitarist Johnny Winter recorded in the '60s before he was signed by Columbia in 1968. These sides were recorded between 1960 and 1967 for the Dart, KCRO, Frolic, Todd, Hall-Way, and Pacemaker labels -- in other words, virtually his entire recorded output prior to his Progressive Blues Experiment long-player in 1967. The music here is raw electric blues, R&B, and even a few early rock tunes thrown into the mix. The cover of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Broke and Lonely" is a highlight, as is the burning instrumental cover of Chuck Berry's "Reelin' and Rockin." "Ease My Pain" is a primitive but fantastic model for what was to come in the late '60s on Columbia. A few tunes, such as "Eternally" and "You'll Be the Death of Me," were originally issued by Frolic, but picked up by Atlantic for national distribution. "Gone for Bad" and "I Had to Cry" were issued on MGM. Neither single charted; Winter was dropped. These tunes are a fine document, a lost highway to the past. Given the role Winter played in the electric blues and its mass acceptance in America, these tunes serve not as some inferior or embarrassing document, but the thing itself, raw and undiluted. Most of the material is comprised of doo wop, R&B, and twist instrumentals, all gritty enough not to be relegated as generic after the first listen.

Hymn For Her - Lucy & Wayne and the AmAIRican Stream CDHymn For Her - Lucy & Wayne and the AmAIRican Stream CD - Lucy Tight & Wayne Waxing are "Hymn For Her", a band that hails from anywhere they can park their trailer. H4H live, tour and record in their 16 foot, 1961 Bambi Airstream (comes with dog and baby). Their new summer release 2010, 'Lucy & Wayne and THE AMAIRICAN STREAM' was entirely recorded in their classic trailer on a coast to coast U.S tour. They stopped at various campgrounds and friends' driveways between shows, set up their gear in their Bambi/home recording studio, rolled tape and rocked out. Many photographs and videos were taken during this endeavour. (Music videos will be released throughout 2010.) The album was mixed by Jim Diamond (who did the first White Stripes record) and captures the live, raucous sounds of H4H. Armed with 2 bullet mics, a three-stringed broom handle/cigar box, banjo, dobro, bass drum, hi-hat, and harp, this 'lil duo causes massive earthquakes wherever they play. Check out the video of "Fiddlestix".

JazzChronic - Share the Wealth CDJazzChronic - Share the Wealth CD -JazzChronic came into their own through their March 2009 CD release "Share the Wealth." This genre-jumping production incorporates soul, funk, acid-jazz, and rock to literally share the riches of musical talent and collaboration. JazzChronic's grooves are well balanced with a professional sound. "Share the Wealth" is innovative, creative and truly creates a powerful musical experience. JazzChronic is all about fusing all genres of music into grooves that you can use. If you are "crusin' for some fusion," then JazzChronic is the band for you!

Cas Haley - Connection CDCas Haley - Connection CD - With his debut album selling over 30,000 copies without major distribution or marketing, Cas Haley retreated to his home in Paris, Texas, to create a timeless album of reggae-pop songs filled with chill grooves and irresistible melodies. His crystalline voice and funky, easygoing beats earned Cas a second-place finish on America's Got Talent, which in turn netted him a measure of fame and a following. But the contest also locked the Texan singer/songwriter into a major label deal that didn't feel right. So, not wanting to be turned into a manufactured product, he struck out on his own. The superb result: Connection, a collection of songs basking in the musical maturity that comes from staying true to his artistic vision.

h4hthHymn For Her - Year of the Golden Pig CD - A duo that takes you over the stars and sands, playing soul-scaping music with voices and hands. A variety of stringed instruments and chords of vocals intertwine in a way that captivates and mesmerizes. Hymn for Her is a story of two musicians who took a break from touring with their band (Maggi, Pierce and EJ) and traveled up to Maine to write a book. It wasn't long before cabin fever set in. Thus, a baby was conceived and a band was born (they're still working on the book). In the year of The Golden Pig, Spring 2007, their baby was born and the duo started recording an album. They stripped down to the bare necessities: two acoustic instruments and two voices, keeping it as true to their live performance as possible. Hymn for Her bring to you their debut CD, Year of the Golden Pig! $11.00

seunthSeun Kuti - Seun Kuti & Fela's Egypt 80 CD - Seun Kuti is the son of Fela Kuti, Africa's greatest musician and inventor of Afrobeat. From the opening bars of this album, ideas, words, and notes whiz about with abandon. The Afrobeat magic is set in motion while the delirious, unrelenting groove machine carries us away. For this debut album and full North American summer tour, Seun is leading the legendary Egypt 80 orchestra, his father's last band. Egypt 80 have been together for over 2 decades and it shows in every note, from the cohesion and absolutely mesmerizing precision of the rhythmic reflexes down to the thousandth of a second that makes their ultra-syncopated polyphony the perfect 'swing' model. $14.99

ttreethTree of Music T-Shirt - This white cotton t-shirt with colored neck and sleeve rings features gorgeous "Tree of Music in a Land of Enchantment" artwork by Brian Zickafoose. You can choose Kelly Green or Sky Blue rings, and the different choices make different parts of the artwork pop! Available in sizes Small up to XXL. $17.00

Upon receiving our order of the new G. Love and Special Sauce album, we were surprised to see that it shipped with some bonus discs. The 4-song acoustic EP is limited, and when they're gone they're gone, so call for availability!
