New Releases:

Missing CatsMissing Cats - Larry Brown Amen CD - On Missing Cats' confident first album, 'Larry Brown Amen,' John 'Jojo' Hermann and Sherman Ewing flex their songwriting muscles and deliver a dramatic Alt/Blues/Rock collection of original songs. This is a rich CD, conceived by a pair of road warriors & friends who share a decades-long collaborative relationship.

Hermann describes the album as 'New York City meets Mississippi meets Athens, GA meets Nashville', and he's right. An array of artists dropped by the studio to lend their support to various tracks. Visitors included North Mississippi All Stars' Luther and Cody Dickenson, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, Sam Bush, Jon Randall Stewart, Anthony Krizan, Jesse Alexander and more. The renowned musicians joined in as Hermann and Ewing record their album live in Nashville over a four-day period with Grammy nominated producer Jon Randall Stewart (Emmy Lou Harris, Sam Bush, and Lyle Lovett,) capturing the energy and electricity that the songs deserved.

Coming Soon:

Avett BrothersThe Avett Brothers - The Carpenter CD - The Avetts are back, produced again by Rick Rubin, with the much-anticipated follow-up to I and Love and You. The twelve songs on The Carpenter continue the band's exploration of the human condition. They will pull at your heart and make you stop and think. One moment filled with sunshine and happiness, the next sorrow and regret, they are always beautiful, always honest. Poetry from the soul. Fresh off the road and speaking from their hometown of Concord, North Carolina, Scott and Seth Avett agreed The Carpenter feels different to them, deeper, more meaningful, more starkly reflective of their own hopes and fears, than past efforts. They are wiser now, and more clear-eyed about the fragility and finiteness of life. The writing for The Carpenter reflects the brothers' journey toward growing older and the unavoidable realities that await.

"For me, in the process between I and Love and You and this album, there have really been three years of me trying to refine a series of steps of letting go of certain things I've held on to," Scott says. "This album feels much more like a whole of refined parts that work together -- sort of like a well-oiled motor -- than records in the past did. I feel it is much more a cohesive work."

Marco Benevento - TigerfaceMarco Benevento - TigerFace CD - Over three previous studio albums, pianist/sound-sculptor/songwriter Marco Benevento has set forth a vision for instrumental music that connects the dots between Explosions In The Sky and Tortoise on one side, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau on the other.

On his fourth studio recording, 'Tigerface', the 34-year old artist takes the next step forward in this evolution. Benevento paints his songs in a myriad of sonic colors, shimmering in acoustic piano, synths and analog keyboards. The tunes themselves conceptualized from seemingly every wisp of melody, hook and cadence that's ever tickled his ear.

The album was recorded and mixed by Tom Biller (Silversun Pickups, Fiona Apple) and Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Akron/Family), while Benevento invited a stellar cast of musicians to help capture his ideas, including drummers Matt Chamberlain (Bill Frisell, Pearl Jam), John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea & The Cake) and Andrew Barr (The Barr Brothers), bassists Dave Dreiwitz (Ween), Reed Mathis (Tea Leaf Green) and Mike Gordon (Phish), violinist Ali Helnwein (Traction Avenue Chamber Orchestra) and saxophonist Stuart Bogie (Antibalas, Superhuman Happiness).

For the first time on record he uses vocals, inviting Kalmia Traver (Rubblebucket) to sing on the infectious dance rock rave-up 'Limbs Of A Pine' and the pastoral psych rock meditation 'This Is How It Goes'. Other standouts include the angelic Arcade Fire meets The Flaming Lips anthem 'Eagle Rock', the soaring garage psychedelia of 'Going West', the piano riff rock jaunt 'Escape Horse', and the happily lilting 'Fireworks', which bounces along like a long lost Italian folk song beamed down to him by ancestors from his father's homeland. As anybody who's seen Benevento perform live can attest, the pianist eyes closed, smile wide across his face, fingers free-flowing across the keys is a satellite to the muse. 'Tigerface', indeed, is the commitment to this idea; a record that rides the yes wave and in the process becomes a soundtrack for fellow travelers chasing the horizon ahead.

Jimmy HerringJimmy Herring - Subject to Change Without Notice CD - Subject To Change Without Notice is the second solo album from American guitar hero Jimmy Herring which features mostly all original tunes as well as highlights such as amazing covers of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's Hope, George Harrison's Within You Without You and Jimmy McGriff's Miss Poopie. Joining Jimmy on lead guitar are such top notch musicians as Neal Fountain and Etienne Mbappe on the bass, Jeff Sipe and Tyler Greenwell on drums, Matt Slocum on piano and keyboards. Making special guest appearances on the album are Bela Fleck on banjo, Bill Evans on saxophones, and Nicky Sanders on the violin and Carter Herring on the cello.

Les RacquetLes Racquet - Be Water My Friend CD - Inspired by an interview with Kung Fu legend Bruce Li, the release Be Water My Friend indulges the listener at every turn with anecdote and metaphor, about the philosophy behind `being water" and the gentle reminder that life is beautiful. The CD was recorded at Drift Design Studios in Boston, MA in the winter of 2011, as the band was coming through during the first leg of their tour. Booked for only a weekend the trio made the most of their time, recording their favorite songs and a subsequent promotional video which were both released in early 2012. This recording is the first time that all three voices are a prominent melody. Also, the recording is a representation of a time when the band was learning how to live together on the road, how to share responsibility and maximize the efficiency it takes to be both musicians and promoters. The trio shows ultimate trust in one another as they spin intricate harmonies and solos amidst beautiful melodies and deep groves.

The DelugeThe Deluge - Elephant Graveyard CD - Elephant Graveyard is a freewheeling yarn with wildly expressive musical accompaniment. The second release from the Deluge is a departure from their first in so much as ascetic, but the spirit of storytelling is very evident on Graveyard. The record begins with the Otis Redding inspired Honest Man and moves seamlessly into the murder ballad Rosy. Each track differs vastly from the last and the inclusion of the Tom Scott cover, So White, is cleverly translated by the band's new rhythm section in the dynamic duo of Jeremy Merritt (drums) and George Westberry (bass). New guitarist, Daniel Serrif, displays his mastery of motivic development in his work on Let's Make Medicine, which begins with cerebral legato bends before it transforms into a downright raunchy rock and roll guitar solo. Chris Lord offers his melodic voicing throughout the entire record and is on full display on the track, Her Pride. Brandon Knox's voice also displays fluidity from liltingly sweet to shouting and screaming. The addition of Kofi Burbridge (ARU, Tedeschi Trucks Band) adds another eccentric voice to an already elaborate tapestry. All told, Elephant Graveyard is a diverse record that will keep the listener's head on a swivel.

Also available: The Deluge - Cryin' on the Vine CD

Mac & JuiceMac & Juice - Step Into the Light CD - Mac & Juice's self-released album, Step into the Light, is not just a collection of songs but rather a personal stamp on their original music that has developed organically over the years. Because of the many genres of music coming to life on this album, it is challenging to put them into any one category. While crafting songs is serious business for Mac & Juice, what follows are bright, tight, beautifully rocking stories that come to life through moonlit vocals, thoughtful lyrics, and their two guitars which seem to channel the stories as well. Among the eleven songs, "Willie Nelson Song" and "One Hundred Dollars" plug songwriting influences such as Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, while "Johnny Gene" and "I'm Going Home" give a nod to authentic bluegrass. "Phoenix" and "She Don't Wanna Be" are straight driving rock songs with moving hooks. "Today," "Remembered as the Best" and "Countryside" will make you want to drive with the top down. "The Most Beautiful Thing" unveils jazz notes that are reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, but with their signature virtuoso brand. "Piece of Mind" ebbs and flows over a groove laden low end that spills into a lick-heavy guitar solo where Mac & Juice unleash their tandem jams.

Blackwater Music Festival 2011

The 2nd annual Blackwater Music Festival was again at the beautiful 'Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park'. The name "Blackwater" is said to have come from the deep dark color of the Suwannee River. The river is black because of the flow from the Okefenokee Swamp where it has become saturated with the tannins from billions of leaves, roots, and bark. The offset colors of the bleach white limestone walls that surround each side of the river make for an awe inspiring view which is a beautiful setting for a weekend of good music.

New Releases:

The Heavy Pets CDThe Heavy Pets CD - It's no wonder the Huffington Post named the Heavy Pets 2010 self-titled release one of the top 10 albums of the year. The collection plays out like a Pandora radio station with a little bit of something for everyone. The 12-track album packs a lot of surprises in each radio ready song including soaring multi-part harmonies, juicy solos and even a special guest appearance with John Popper of Blues Traveler. You will love it and your girlfriend will try to steal it --that is if she doesn't already own it first.

Also available: The Heavy Pets - Whale (2 CD)

Dark Water Rising CDDark Water Rising CD - Just as the deep, dark waters of the Lumber River ebb and flow along the banks of North Carolina, so does the music created by Dark Water Rising. As a 6 piece ensemble, each member of DWR brings a bit of character and deep-rooted soul to create a fresh, organic sound; one that fits indiscernibly into to a single genre alone.

Dark Water Rising takes the listener on an adventure through life with their debut album, "Dark Water Rising". With youth and wisdom on their side, DWR has witnessed the powerful effect of their music on people of all ages.

Andy Shaw Band - Own Resolve CDAndy Shaw Band - Own Resolve CD - Own Resolve exhibits some of the best of what the Andy Shaw Band has to offer. Tight vocal harmonies, reggae groove, and touching lyrics, the album represents a band that has fully grown into their unique sound. The album opens with the first track We All Belong, as tight 3 part harmonies quickly excel into a reggae feel and something different. It's this different blend of an almost alt country tinge that is in the veins of this new album. Grown from natural inspirations on jam, reggae, blues, and pop, the Andy Shaw Band has found a way to make their songs exhibit them seamlessly, without coming off as poor substitutes. The album is a great combination of songwriting and groove, and looks to push the boundaries of how those elements interact. Also available: Andy Shaw Band - Ways of the World CD

Strange Arrangement - Polygraph CDStrange Arrangement - Polygraph CD - This offering by the Chicago quartet has shades of funk, southern boogie, jazz, 70's pop, and reggae arranged around all original rock n roll, with plenty of jams to interest Phish and Widespread fans. "Polygraph", a ten minute Rhodes piano led pop anthem epitomizes the band's ability to change time signatures and even genres within a single song, in a seamless transition that keeps the groove going, with lyrics and harmonies that have you shower singing.

Hot Tuna - Steady As She Goes CDHot Tuna - Steady as She Goes CD - Hot Tuna is back with their first all-new studio album in 20 years! Founding members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady masterfully blend Americana rock with blues and acoustic folk on a record that hits their full spectrum of styles from electric and acoustic Hot Tuna to their days in Jefferson Airplane. Reaching a zenith of their historic career, Steady As She Goes is an absolute masterpiece.

During their more than four decade long career Jorma and Jack have created some of the most significant music of our time and Steady As She Goes proves that they remain one of the most innovative bands in American music. Recorded at Levon Helm's studio and produced by Grammy-winning producer Larry Campbell, the album captures the energy of their live performances with Barry Mitterhoff on mandolin, drummer Skoota Warner (Cyndi Lauper, Matisyahu, Santana) as well as Campbell joining them on guitar, fiddle, organ and vocals. Steady As She Goes is an iconic record that Hot Tuna fans have been waiting for!

Easy Star All Stars - First Light CdEasy Star All Stars - First Light CD - The first full-length album of original songs from EASY STAR ALL-STARS. The band that brought you Dub Side of the Moon, Radiodread and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Dub Band. The band have built a huge following around the world, and have played shows in over 30 countries on 6 continents. This new album is an important step in the band's story, demonstrating a wide range of approaches to reggae, from progressive to classic, roots to futurist, confirming the All-Stars place as one of the most influential acts on the US reggae scene.

FIRST LIGHT features 14 songs created by all of the members of the Easy Star All-Stars, along with guest appearances by Cas Haley, Junior Jazz, The Meditations, Tony Tuff, Lady Ann and Daddy Lion Chandell.

Flashback with the Grateful DeadFlashback with the Grateful Dead CD - Formed in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, jazz, psychedelia, and space rock. Soulive - Bowlive DVDSoulive - Bowlive DVD - In March of 2010, the members of Soulive hauled their instruments through the doors of a newly-opened warehouse-turned-music venue in Brooklyn that they would call home for the next two weeks. Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans called on a multitude of their closest friends and musical conspirators to join them over the next fortnight - creating an incredibly broad guest lineup that included some of the pre-eminent guitar virtuosos of our generation (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes), some of the biggest names in hip-hop (Questlove, Rahzel), and some of the most inventive improvisational players in modern rock n' roll (Robert Randolph, Marco Benevento, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge). The Brooklyn Bowl quickly became the mecca for these very distinct yet like-minded musicians, where they returned night after night, donning the dress code for good times (bowling shoes) and sharing famous Blue Ribbon fried chicken. The common thread that tied together all these disparate ingredients quickly became palpable -- from the transcendental heartfelt improvisations onstage to the homey & playful atmosphere provided by the bowling alley, the Soulive residency was like nothing that had come before it because all of those diverse elements fused to ultimately bring the Soul to Brooklyn Bowl.

Keller Williams - Kids CDKeller Williams - Kids CD - A true original, Keller Williams has won the hearts and imaginations of a seething tide of young adults who are musically 'in the know.' With his sixteenth album, Kids, Keller stakes out his next conquest- the absolute adoration of the under-10 crowd and their parents, caregivers, and relatives. With Kids, Keller creates a style of family music that's all his own, and reaches his young audience in a way that matters. While other performers play for kids, Keller plays with them. For the album, Keller takes influences of traditional bluegrass, 'Chester & Lester' innovative guitar technique, Robin Williams, and Bobby McFerrin and transports them to warp level. And though Keller's virtuosity extends through his phenomenal instrumental technique and range of vocal styles and effects, he never allows his supreme musicianship to get in the way of the pure joy of the music. Keller Williams' high standards are preserved in his first CD for children and families, Kids.

Roots of Creation - RoC Live Vol. 2 CD Roots of Creation - RoC Live Vol. 2 CD - Nationally touring Reggae-Rock-Dubtronica band, Roots of Creation, releases their widely anticipated fourth album, RoC Live Vol. #2 (Harmonized Records). Based out of New Hampshire RoC toured extensively 2008-10, playing 300+ shows around the country and the US Virgin Islands. Jesse McReynolds & Friends - Songs of the Grateful Dead CDJesse McReynolds & Friends - Songs of the Grateful Dead CD - Recorded by one of our greatest music legends, American treasure, mandolin innovator and stylist Jesse McReynolds. Known for his singing, arranging, songwriting, musical wizardry and recognized for his musical virtuosity, Jesse is a 45 yr veteran of the Grand Ole Opry, multiple Grammy nominee and winner and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee. Songs of the Grateful Dead, performed with his friends, David Nelson (New Riders Of The Purple Sage) and Stu Allen, is Jesse's take on 12 of the finest Grateful Dead Songs ever written by Robert Hunter & Jerry Garcia plus a new original song penned by Jesse & Grateful Dead Songwriter, Robert Hunter. "Jesse's singing voice is like a long-lost brother voice between Jerry Garcia and David Nelson. Everyone who knows their work and is fortunate enough to hear this record will know what I mean. What a trio you'd all have made! The singing is steady and strong. Jerry would approve, I'm certain." - Robert Hunter. Currently on sale, 20% off list price!
Easy Star All Stars - Dubber Side of the Moon CDEasy Star All Stars - Dubber Side of the Moon CD
-Dubber Side of the Moon features the complete sequence of Dub Side of the Moon remixed by a handpicked list of cutting edge and legendary producers. Since its release in 2003, Dub Side of the Moon has been a phenomenon, spending 7 years on the Billboard charts, selling over 200,000 copies worldwide and kicking off the still-growing-strong recording and touring career of the Easy All-Stars. The band has now put its music into the hands of Grove Corporation, 10 Ft. Ganja Plant, Mad Professor, Adrian Sherwood, Dubphonic, Liquid Agents, Dubmatix, Dreadzone, Victor Rice, Kalbata, Scientist, Michael G, Border Crossing and J.Viewz and the results are a futuristic foray deeper into the unchartered territory traveled by the original release. Mixing deep dub grooves, up to the minute dub step riddims, and more, Dubber Side is a journey fans old and new alike will want to take.

Brushfire Stankgrass - One for the Salamanders CDBrushfire Stankgrass - One for the Salamanders CD - The remarkable chemistry and live experimentation in the music of Brushfire Stankgrass begins with its founding members, Ben & Will Saylor. The brothers began playing music in the Suzuki method at the age of three and picked up the banjo and guitar at 10 & 12, respectively. They still maintain their bluegrass chops today, but have added some Moog analog effects and "trance-mountain dub" rhythms to create a style which has moved beyond the traditional into truly uncharted territory; they call it Stankgrass. Mixing Moog effects with bluegrass backbeats, the sound of Brushfire Stankgrass is instantly unique. The Asheville group was recently voted into The Mountain Xpress' "Best of WNC" for the second year running, tying with The Steep Canyon Rangers & Steve Martin in the bluegrass/oldtime category. While the music is certainly not straight bluegrass, the sound is undeniably derived from mountain musical traditions. Their eclectically entertaining live performances have earned the band a loyal following.

Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales - Hooteroll?+2 CDJerry Garcia & Howard Wales - Hooteroll?+2 CD - Keyboardist Howard Wales and guitarist Jerry Garcia teamed up often in the early 1970's, holding jam sessions at nearby clubs and recording this largely ignored studio album. The music on Hooteroll? is a natural extension of the sublime jazz-fusion that had begun to change jazz music. This is psychedelic, interstellar rock with healthy doses of funk, jazz, and 70's style soul. Features John Kahn on bass, Bill Vitt on drums, and Martin Fierro on sax/flute. A classic California lineup and an album that you won't believe you missed!

* A classic, this record is Jerry Garcia's first non-Grateful Dead work!
* Special digipak reissue never available before in America features stunning art by Mati Klarwein.
* Hooteroll? shows early-era Dead influence, yet incorporates the years of experience accrued by Garcia. Some very unique music is created in this session, and lets the listener see how Garcia could branch out to do something different--more experimental, more off-the-cuff, and more spontaneous.
* Using a seven-piece band and implementing organs, sax, trumpet, guitars, bass, and drums, kaleidoscopic musical waves and journeys combine to make a very diverse and jam-filled record.
Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks, SHE ONCE LIVED HERE and SWEET COCAINE, recorded live in 1972, and A TRIP TO WHAT NEXT, from the original LP, on CD for the first time!

Phish - Coral Sky DVDPhish - Coral Sky DVD - On November 2nd, 1996, Phish performed at Coral Sky Amphitheater in West Palm Beach, FL; the only outdoor shed show of the Fall Tour. A long-time fan favorite, the show features special guests including Karl Perazzo (from Santana) on percussion throughout and Butch Trucks (from The Allman Brothers Band), playing drums during the encore. Along with a few palm trees, the DVD showcases the birth of the band's more rhythmic, textured group improv style and conveys their and the crowd's excitement at the breakthrough. The audio for the DVD is fully mixed and mastered for 5.1 surround.

Mike Gordon - Moss CDMike Gordon - Moss CD - The fascinating thing is that he's able to evoke concepts as ethereal as this not just lyrically but musically. Songs like "Spiral" and "The Void" detour into evocatively abstract, meterless areas of sound with a mysterious, textural richness. On the other hand, such numbers as "Can't Stand Still" and "Fire From a Stick" - both joyfully devoted to muses, mentors and the ecstatic wellspring of inspiration - are infectious, danceable, upbeat and viscerally planted in the here and now.

Three years in the making, Moss is the later chapter in an ongoing collaboration between Gordon and his creative sounding board, Jared Slomoff. Gordon, of course, sings and plays bass, as well as a variety of other instruments, including guitar, piano and drum programming. Slomoff co-produced and contributed some singing, playing and programming as well.

Drummers Joe Russo and Doug Belote crop up throughout the album, and other guests include organist Marco Benevento and percussionist Ken Lovelett, who brought a few intriguing instruments of his own invention to Gordon's studio. Mike's bandmates in Phish - keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman also make appearances.

Soulive - Rubber SouliveSoulive - Rubber Soulive CD
-The trio take on the Fab Four with their 7th studio release RUBBER SOULIVE, on Royal Family Records. With this 11-track instrumental ode to the greatest, Soulive joins the likes of Booker T, George Benson and Chet Atkins by putting their own spin on their favorite Beatles classics.

Kraz recalls, "It finally came together when we ended up back at Alan's studio in Hatfield, MA after a weekend of gigs last year... We were in the middle of unloading the gear when we decided it was time: You know what? Rather than driving home and then driving back in a few days, let's stay right here and work on that Beatles idea. It really was that spontaneous. I actually went to a music store and got a bunch of the new re-mastered stuff. The first day in the studio, we just did a lot of listening - listening and talking about which tunes to do and how to do them. We wanted to do some stuff that already sounded like it was in our lane - the groovier, funkier stuff. But we also wanted to delve into other songs that were more open to our interpretation, you know?"

Railroad Earth - Railroad Earth CDRailroad Earth - Railroad Earth CD - Consummate roots rockers Railroad Earth release of their first album for One Haven Music. The self-titled album was produced by Angelo Montrone in association with Michael Caplan (The Allman Brothers Band, Los Lonely Boys, Keb' Mo'). 'Railroad Earth' is the band's most diverse collection to date, with nine new exquisitely-crafted songs that range from rousing ballads and string band funk to wistful waltzes and quirky time signature folk.

Always at the forefront, though, is singer and songwriter Todd Sheaffer, whose aching vocals and evocative lyrics anchor the band. On 'Potter's Field,' his plain-spoken lyrics and earthy arrangements recall the panoramic storytelling of The Band, while album opener 'Long Walk Home' brings to mind the heartfelt soul searching of Wilco. 'On The Banks' displays Schaffer's raw emotive power in the quiet humility of his lyrics.

Green Hit - Purpose CD Green Hit - Purpose CD - Green HIt is a trio from Northwest Florida. The efforts of this collaboration have produced something truly unique, challenging, and tasteful. "purpose." is presented to you in all honesty. It is a live album which has been polished. "Live" - meaning all the players played simultaneously in the same room to record all of the music. There were no over-dubs, no click-tracks, and no safety net. "Polished" - meaning the sound was mixed and mastered in a traditional manner.

The whole of the album was recorded in three sessions during February and March of 2010. These sessions were held at 3rd Floor Recording, located at the Old Sacred Heart Hospital building, in Pensacola, FL., by Sean Peterson. All songs were written, arranged, and produced by members of Green Hit, and all songs are copyrighted by Green Hit.

It has been rumored that the Old Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola is haunted. During the recording sessions several anomalous occurrences met with the band. Some of sounds on the album were donated by multiple Lo-Fi radio stations via Chase's amp. The content of these offerings brings into question whether the occurrences were by chance or due to intervention.

New Additions:

MMW - Radiolarians 2 CDMedeski Martin & Wood - Radiolarians 2 CD - A year ago, Medeski Martin & Wood set off on the innovative experiment known as The Radiolarians Series. The Radiolarians Series was designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write>record>tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, convened for brief writing retreats, performed only that new material on tour, and then recorded the music immediately after getting off the road.

Indirecto Records is now releasing this material as a trio of records entitled Radiolarians I, II, and III. To date, the band has completed 3 tours with dates stretching across the United States, South America, and Japan. The influences of these locations have found their way into MMW's writing and are being expressed through the music found on the Radiolarians Series. In September, Indirecto released Radiolarians I. This April 2009, Indirecto will releases the second installment of the series, Radiolarians II. The Radiolarians Series, designed to challenge the traditional format of touring after a record1s release, has found Medeski Martin & Wood thriving and making some of their most creative and innovative music in years. $15.98

Jake now has his own record label, and tours extensively in the U.S. and Japan. He has completely rewritten the book on the possibilities of the ukulele -- and is adding new chapters with every CD he records. $16.98

Miles Davis Bitches Brew LP

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (2 LPs) - Everybody wants to "change the face of music," but few have succeeded. Even fewer have changed the musical universe by simply doing what comes naturally. Miles Davis was a constant and natural innovator throughout his life, but perhaps none of his works have had the impact of Bitches Brew. This album could be credited with changing the very nature of improvisation, and certainly with changing the demographic of jazz audiences around the world. Recorded in August 1969, in the wake of Woodstock, this is a masterpiece of epic proportions. Miles certainly wasn't the first to fuse jazz, funk, and rock, but there's no better incarnation of fusion's beginnings than this album. With a myriad collection of instrumentation and atmospheres, Bitches Brew stretched music into previously unheard shapes. Truly a watermark in the evolution of sound!

Last Week's Additions:

Dead - Hartford CDsGrateful Dead - To Terrapin: Hartford '77 (3 CDs) - As they were prepping for the summer release of their first studio album in two years, Terrapin Station (a Top 40 Billboard(r) album), the Grateful Dead belw the roof off Connecticut's Hartford Civic Center on the closing night of their spring '77 tour. A show long sought after by Dead fans, the set features inspired versions of songs that would soon come out on Terrapin, including "Estimated Prophet," "Passenger," and the title track. Epic jams also include, of course, "One More Saturday Night," "Jack Straw," "Candyman," "U.S. Blues," and takes on "Tennessee Jed" and "Sugaree" that many fans claim are as good as any ever recorded. Released in celebration of the Dead's '09 tour--which plays Hartford--and presented in HDCD, the recordings from this previously unissued show were mastered from the original two track master analog tapes. $19.98

Dead - Winterland 1973 Box setGrateful Dead - Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings (9 CD box) - The Dead had...beat the delivery of arena acoustics with a monstrous, traveling PA that was worth the bills just for the ice-knife slice of Jerry Garcia's guitar solos. A running joy across this nine-CD box...Oiled and armed from a good year on tour (including the Watkins Glen festival in July), the entire band is in buoyant form." --from Rolling Stone's four-star review by David Fricke "The tone on every song played is perfect, they have that 70s sweetness...this could be the best set of shows in their history, and I'm a big fan who has seen my share of shows."--fan comment

When the Grateful Dead played San Francisco's Winterland Arena for three straight nights in November 1973, they triumphed with home court advantage during one of their most celebrated eras. Recorded November 9, 10, and 11, the trio of epic shows captured on WINTERLAND 1973 are among the finest and most legendary in the band's vast tape vaults, according to Dead archivist David Lemieux. Housed in a deluxe archival box and presented in HDCD, the set contains a portfolio of 72 tracks mastered from the original two-track Master Tapes using an innovative process that delivers unprecedented sound quality.

WINTERLAND 73 will be issued in a one time only limited edition run.  Get yours before they are gone. $99.98

Superfrog CDSuperfrog - Year of the Frog CD - Superfrog's chest jarring bass riffs, wailing guitar jams and incredible lyrics alone could stand the test of time as a modern sounding rock-jam band. Add in the flavor of superb vocal harmonies, a pinch of brass goodness and a whole helluva lot of solid rhythm and you have yourself a sound that is evolving into one of the Northeast's hottest acts. Comprised of 5 members with various backgrounds and influences, the talent that presents itself each time the band takes the stage is certainly as impressive as their mentors. Crafty lyrics coupled with original, creative musical arrangements sets Superfrog apart from many of the other rock bands hailing out of the New England region. With a strong inventory of original tunes and a host of covers, Superfrog's line-up of music will keep you rocking long into the night. Despite being busy in the studio banging out their second album, Superfrog still finds time to tour and put on intense shows. Keep an eye out for the band in the months to come. This is the band you don't want to miss when they arrive in your town. $12
